Hello everyone and welcome to this new video!
Today we want to talk about the Japan Rail Pass.
The Japan Rail Pass is a subscription that allows you to use the means that travel under JR company,
including the shinkansen trains.
Shinkansens are the famous Japanese high-speed trains,
which are very useful if you want to move around the country during your stay,
for example, from Tokyo to Osaka as we did.
Pay attention! The Japan Rail Pass is reserved only for temporary visitors,
which means for those who stay for up to 90 days in Japan
and must be purchased from Italy soon before your arrival in Japan.
This pass, which can be purchased with a validity of 7, 14 or 21 days.
It covers:
- all the means of Japan Railways,
shinkansen included with
the exception of the NOZOMI lines and MIZUHO lines
- urban railway lines, including JR Yamanote Line
and Chuo/Sobu Line in Tokyo
- JR shuttle buses to and from the airport
- the Narita Express for Narita, Tokyo's main airport to the Tokyo station
- JR ferry from Hiroshima to Miyajima and vice versa
- many local bus lines
For a complete list, please visit the site
from where we purchased the pass (you can find it down below)
and Hyperdia, the offical website of means of transport in Japan,
There is also an useful app that you can download on your smartphone
to check in real time all the timetables you may need
and even the right platform where your train is coming to.
Once you have chosen your pass duration
and completed your online purchase,
you will receive a voucher, like that, with all your personal info
a travel guide, which is always pretty useful
a map of Japan with a table that summarizes all the times of arrival and departure of the trains you can use
and a manual with all the instructions to use the Japan Rail Pass.
So you will receive all these things at home.
It will takes 1/2 weeks since your order.
Warning! Vouchers must be changed within 3 months
of their issue, so be sure to check the time of purchase.
Once you arrive in Japan,
just go to one of the many exchange offices
to convert the voucher and get the real pass, which looks like that and is wonderful.
These offices are also present at the airport,
so you can immediately convert your voucher.
But keep an eye on the queues, because they can be really long.
If you do not intend to activate the pass immediately,
for example staying in Tokyo for the first few days and then moving on,
go back and choose one of the offices in the city,
maybe out of peak times since queues can be really really long.
Their are pretty fast but the number of tourists coming is always huge.
To convert the voucher you will need to fill in a simple form with
your personal data, passport number
and the date of the first day of pass use
(between the same day and up to 30 days after completing the form). For example we did it after three days in Tokyo.
Using the Japan Rail Pass is really very simple.
To use traines without reserved seat,
such as those on the subway,
you just need to show the pass to the station attendant who will let you pass.
To use trains that need a seat reservation,
such as shinkansen from Tokyo to Osaka,
go to the JR Ticket Office,
indicate the train and timetable you have chosen for your trip
and you will be given a ticket with the carriage and number of your place indicated
and a ticket to obliterate to access the tracks. This reservation is totally free of charge.
To avoid queues,
we advise you to book your seat the night before your departure
so that you can then go to the station with no hurry or worries.
The cost of the Japan Rail Pass varies
from 220 euros to 450 depending on its validity,
but we assure you that those are money well spent
given the extreme punctuality
of the means of transport, cleanliness and reliability in Japan. You can plan your trip based on it!
Well, for today that's all.
Let us know if you have found this video useful
and do not miss the next one in which we will talk
about the Suica card so you will find out what it is.
