- Triathlon, wetsuit, versus non wetsuit swimming.
It's on camera, it's harassment.
Are you gonna go in the most ideal situation?
Morning trainiacs, I'll save you the whole
what swim I did this morning,
because I'll tell you right now
that it's going to be about 1000 meters,
it's going to be a little bit of drill,
little bit of swimming around
because yesterday and today,
we're taking as rest days,
so that the next three days we can giver
and then off to Kona.
Today, we are doing some testing of some new gear.
I want to try out the new Tear Swim Skin,
with torque, I believe it is.
Which then brings to mind,
triathlon wetsuit versus non wetsuit swimming.
(upbeat music)
It's a good sign when you can't
get it up over you calves, right?
- Right.
(upbeat music)
- Goodness, I got so much stuff.
Kay, so, if given the choice, bottom line,
if you can go with a wetsuit,
90, 95% of the triathletes out there
should go for a wetsuit.
The wetsuit provides buoyancy,
which serves two functions for most swimmers
who didn't grow up with an elite swimming background.
Number one, we need buoyancy,
we need to get on top of the water.
Number two, provides an aspect of safety.
If you start freaking out,
just hop on your back, chill out, relax,
or slow your stroke down, it's easy.
Now, there are two instances where people might say,
well, I just don't feel comfortable in a wetsuit,
it constricts my shoulders.
Number one, if you're formally an elite swimmer.
As a kid, you swam a lot, you have massive shoulder mobility
and that shoulder mobility is constricted
by a lot of wetsuits.
Well, that's been fixed by a lot of the more high-end,
six, seven, $800 wetsuit.
So, if you're formally an elite swimmer,
you can solve that.
Now, if you're not an elite swimmer
and still feel constricted in the shoulders,
I've had that problem myself.
It's often when I get a wetsuit that is too tight
or lower end wetsuits don't have
that mobility in the shoulders,
but go for 6 to 10 open water swims
and you'll develop that shoulder stability
and you'll be able to get through it
without burning out your shoulders
and you'll have the benefit of that wetsuit
with the buoyancy and the safety
and you'll be tougher because your shoulders
will be like boulders, yo.
Did you see Chris slap my ass?
That's on camera, that's harassment.
If the cost of buying a wetsuit is the deterring factor
to not getting one for you,
I would actually recommend a wetsuit called
the Xterra Volt, I believe.
It was like the first wetsuit that I got,
I'll link to it in the description below.
That will be an affiliate link,
if you buy anything through Amazon
in the 24 hours after clicking through that link,
it won't cost you anything extra,
but it helps support the channel
because we get a small commission from Amazon
and it all adds up, thank you very much.
I used that wetsuit for about four or five seasons,
held up really well
and even after four or five seasons,
I sold it for half of what I paid.
So, instead of, say, renting a wetsuit
for $60 to $100 and then having to give it back,
you can buy your own wetsuit for $200.
If you don't end up using it,
sell it for $100, $150,
and you get your own wetsuit
that nobody else has peed in, huge benefit.
Oh, fun story about that,
when I sold that Xterra wetsuit,
I put the ad up and said wetsuit has never been peed in
except for emergencies.
IE, an emergency is, oh my god,
I'm in a wetsuit and I need to pee.
It sold in a day, full price.
Okay, so for the wetsuit mandatory swims,
you're gonna use a wetsuit, hence mandatory.
For the wetsuit optional swims,
you should be using a wetsuit,
unless you are a former elite swimmer
where you actually have the ability to swim faster
without a wetsuit, then game time decision.
If you can go without a wetsuit,
go without a wetsuit, be faster.
But, what was that weird breath?
But, for the vast majority of us,
a wetsuit is gonna make us warmer,
it's gonna make us faster,
it's gonna make us safer.
Now, what if it is a wetsuit optional swim?
Then it comes down to,
are you going to go in your trunks
or are you going to go in your trisuit?
Or, are you going to go in the most ideal situation,
in a speedsuit?
Let's deal with the first two options.
Going in your trunks or your trisuit.
If you trisuit has basically little to no drag,
like it fits basically like body paint
and you don't have big pockets on the side.
Often, junior elite racers will just go in a trisuit,
but the trisuits that most of us wear
have basically windsails on the side
and they're not ideal for swimming in
and they're basically going to act as a dragsuit.
So, you could potential just go in your tri bottoms,
but the problem then becomes
when you're wet and you're going into transition two,
about to hop on to the bike,
you gotta put a top on
and it is just almost like nearly impossible.
You're basically pulling a tight top on,
over like glue and you're gonna lose some time in transition
So, that's why the most ideal option
is to have a speedsuit.
What it does is it actually sucks in your body,
so there's less frontal drag
and it's hard to see,
but typically, it's got a pattern on it
and a material that is faster than
any trisuit cloth that you're going to have
and typically, even faster and more hydrodynamic,
see aerodynamics in the water, than your skin will be.
You put it over top of your trisuit
and if you got a long sleeve trisuit,
as long as the sleeves here are nice and tight,
you can have them sticking past.
You whip it off after you get out of the water
and you're going to be faster.
Even though this isn't buoyant,
you'll definitely be faster.
Just this morning, when I was kicking off the wall
after a flip turn,
I was going about three feet further past the flags
than I normally do in just an average swim wearing a speedo.
So, there you go, trainiacs.
I hope that that helps clear some things up.
If you have the option to wear a wetsuit,
most of us should wear a wetsuit.
If you don't have the option to wear a wetsuit
because the water is too hot,
wear a speedsuit, ideally.
If you don't have the option to buy a speedsuit,
don't wear a top
and make sure your tri shorts are really tight
and don't cause a lot of drag.
Just know that when you get into transition one,
you're gonna have to put on a top
and you're gonna lose a few seconds.
Now, speaking of a few seconds,
I think I'm going to go for a little recovery run
for just several seconds.
Ah, rest day, love, love, love.
(upbeat music)
Alright guys, easy 5K.
What do you say?
I really like that, Dad.
Sometimes I don't like Coach Pat
very much either, guys, I agree.
Later, trainiacs.
