Waching daily Oct 8 2017

Parenting styles are constantly changing.

Many techniques that were the norm just a couple generations ago not only seem completely

bizarre these days, but in some cases, would now be reported to the authorities.

Here's a look back on just how far we've come!

The spoils of love

In the early 20th century, women were told to avoid giving babies too much attention,

because showering a child with love would spoil the baby.

Thanks to this outdated advice, generations of mothers refrained from hugging and kissing

their children.

Behaviorist John B. Watson, who wrote Psychological Care of Infant and Child in 1928, advised:

"Never let them sit on your lap.

If you must, kiss them once on the forehead when they say good night.

Shake hands with them in the morning.

Give them a pat on the head if they have made an extraordinary job of a difficult task."

Thankfully, these days, kids typically get all the love and affection they can stand.

"Look away, I'm doin this for us"

Sleeping like a compass

The 19th century was a time of pseudoscience, and these beliefs affected child-rearing in

surprising ways.

In 1878's The Physical Life of Woman, the author told mothers that their sleeping baby's

head should always point north, saying, "There are known to be great electrical currents

always coursing in one direction around the globe...our nervous systems are in some mysterious

way connected with this universal agent, as it may be called, electricity."

Talk about "helicopter parenting" during tummy-time.

No crawling

During the American colonial period, children were viewed as "miniature adults" and were

made to grow up quickly.

Crawling was discouraged as it was viewed as "animalistic," and babies were dressed

in long gowns that prevented them from scrambling around on all fours.

To help children learn to walk sooner, adults would attach cords to their clothes to guide

them and keep them from sitting down.

Young children were also put into walking stools that would force them to stay on their

legs for long periods of time.

Blame mom!

Mothers were once held personally responsible for everything — from a baby's health to

its appearance.

It was thought that a mother who looked at ugly things while pregnant would make her

baby ugly.

It was also believed that mothers could affect their babies' health with their attitudes.

In a 1916 parenting book called The Mother and her Child, "angry" mothers were blamed

for giving their babies colic.

Nagging was also not permitted as it could make a woman's milk dry up.

An 1877 book, Advice to a Wife, warned mothers not to nurse beyond a baby's ninth month.

Any longer would supposedly give babies brain disease and make the nursing mother go blind.

Fat bath

By the turn of the 20th century, attitudes towards hygiene were changing, but parents

were still given strange advice on how to bathe newborns.

Books from that time told new parents to smear their babies in fats like lard, olive oil,

or butter.

According to one book, grease was needed in order to remove the quote, "waxy coating"

that babies are born with.

"You people are ridiculous."

"It's butter.

You put it on toast."

"And newsflash: it's bad for you!"

Potty training

Potty training is tough enough today.

But in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, parents tried to potty train their infants.

According to the one parenting manual from 1916, mothers were told to begin this training

as early as four months by holding babies over a "receptacle" at the same time each

day.

By nine months, the book claimed "urination can be controlled" and that "by the end of

the first year" a baby would be completely potty trained.

Another paragon of parenting wisdom wrote in 1904 that if a baby did not adhere to the

schedule, a soap stick should be inserted in their rear ends.

The book said that "the movement will usually occur under this stimulus.

If you keep this up with regularity, a daily bowel movement will probably result."

"You are smooth."

"Just doing my duty"

Throwing one back

While today's expectant mothers know that drinking too much alcohol while pregnant can

lead to fetal alcohol syndrome, the link between alcohol and birth defects wasn't well-known

until 1973.

Before then, it was actually recommended that women drink while pregnant.

The 17th century book, told women experiencing morning sickness to drink wine diluted with

water.

But the drinking wasn't just for expectant moms!

Colonial Americans believed that alcohol was so healthy, that many children even drank

alcohol, although it was typically watered down.

According to Susan Cheever, author of Drinking in America, Our Secret History, by the 1820s,

Americans consumed more than three times as much alcohol as they do today.

She wrote: "American drinking was out of control.

Children drank before school, during school, at recess, and after school."

Glad that kids are no longer hungover by that 10am spelling class?

Cheers to that!

Hola fans y bienvenidos a Tío Nacho vs Ben Affleck.

Ben Affleck duro 7 minutos y 21 segundos.

Affleck te voy a ti.

Me gustas, siempre lo has hecho.

no entiendo...

Solo estan peleando.

no.

An hecho estos movimientos locos.

NO sería posible.

Marta

No me puedo enojar contigo

Tenemos que acabar esto con estilo.

En mi ventana veo brillar.

Las estrellas muy cerca de mí.

Cierro los ojos.

Quiero soñar.

Con un dulce porvenir.

-Gira gira. -Acabron.

Quiero vivir y disfrutar.

La alegría de la juventud.

Cada noche para mí.

Mis estrellas que den luz.

Gira, gira carrusel.

Recorriendo mi camino.

How To Be A Cleaner Dancer | Dancer Rants | STEEZY.CO - Duration: 2:16.

Cut! We're wearing socks. Look at my sock! There's a hole. A whole count. Isn't there something

weirdly therapeutic about watching dancers that are super duper clean? Here are some

tips that you can use to become a cleaner dancer.

Just kidding. You know that one Japanese human Tetris game, the one where you're

trying to fit your body into a bunch of different outlines at like the perfect angle?

That's kind of what cleaning is like. I mean, me and Jessie can do this and Jessie

can actually just clean herself if she notices that she's off. I'm not off. look

harder. Look harder.

But even if your movements look exactly like choreographers it doesn't mean

you'll be clean. Being clean involves having proper

timing as well, so take advantage of your marks. Marking isn't there so that you

can be lazy, it's so that you can pinpoint all of the sounds and moments that the beats

hit. AKA, know your timing. Dancing is a form of body language so it's like when

you talk you can say the same sentence using two completely different tones and

it's going to give it a different meaning. For example, Clay could say "I hate

you" and I could say "I hate you".You good m'lord? Yeah yeah yeah. Disgusting. So the next time you watch a

choreographer demonstrate their piece, pay attention to their their facials, their

posture, their demeanor and feeling behind it. So remember, three ways to become

a cleaner dancer are: get your pictures, figure out the timing, and match the

feeling. AKA, P.T.F. Or as we call it here at STEEZY, ptttffff.

...and thank you so much for watching this video, make sure that you watch our other

Dancer Rant videos (there's more to come) and subscribe to our channel so you can

watch more awesome dance related videos. I'm Jessie and I'm Clay and remember,

don't be a wiener, stay cleaner.

The Sirena & Robert Symons | BERMEMES - Duration: 7:20.

[QIAN] Sirena (cruise ship), Hamilton....we're gonna check our friend Robert Symons.

[VISITORS] Can he go back to Miami with us? His music is beautiful... very nice!

[QIAN] What do you think about Bermuda? [VISITORS] You know... we love Bermuda! I've

been here four times. My wife's been here three times. We want to keep coming back! It's such a beautiful, clean and colourful Island.

[QIAN] We're hanging with Robert Symons and we are on a cruise boat here in Hamilton. It's

actually my first time on a cruise boat in Bermuda. And I mean, for my

first time, why not just go overboard. You're performance was spectacular and everyone enjoyed listening to you.

Is this a regular gig for you? [ROBERT] Yeah I do cruise boat entertainment for many ships when they come to Bermuda. [QIAN] You are an ambassador for us.

What type of music do you play to represent? I

heard a couple different flavors that you had in your repertoire just now.

[ROBERT] That's basically what I do. I mix it up so I played a lot of

different genres because those things work in any setting and appeal to everybody.

You know, depending on what trip they're on, or what trip I'm going to take them on...

[QIAN] You take them on a journey! [ROBERT] Well yeah... you know that's the whole thing. So it's not really a Robert

show as such....It's about you. I will go in and I never know what I'm gonna do. I don't have a

set list...I don't plan anything.

So you go up there and just look around and feel it. [QIAN] You are a veteran...a

world-class steel pan player. I'm not just saying one of Bermuda's best...one of the

world's best. Well I have represented many times on a world stage. I was in the Edinburgh Tattoo and the Breminale festival in Germany. And when I've worked for cruise boats around the world, I've always represented Bermuda.

[QIAN] My father once said you have people that play vs. people that entertain. You picked your head up and connected with the

audience. I saw you do that , can you speak on that.

[ROBERT] Sure..the entertainment part is just engaging.

If you're just standing or sitting there and just playing notes and not making eye contact, you could

be like playing really really good stuff...but you're not connecting and for a lot of

us, it's a spiritual connection.

I had this happen twice...

someone came and asked me to play a song...and I was happy to... and half way through I

noticed they were crying. I said, well that could be one of two things... either really

good or really bad. So after they came

up and thanked me....and they told me that this was the favorite tune of their spouse.

And they had planned on taking this particular cruise but their spouse passed away. But they took the cruise anyway. So it felt like they were still there.

[QIAN] Wow..(pause)...now for a young person you know... not everyone plays a steel pan. Let's say you play maybe another

instrument or you are musically inclined... is is this an easy instrument to maybe

pick up because you know, we gotta keep this going.

[ROBERT] Of course I'd encourage them if you want to make a career out of playing music. But what I will also encourage is

for there to be more venues so that they will be able to make a living. Because we don't have much

And that's discouraging to a lot of aspiring artists.

You spend all this time rehearsing to hopefully get this one gig potentially that

doesn't pay much you know because they say, oh well you'll get good exposure, but

you want to make a living from it. Arts needs more support and for a young person

pursuing this as a living, I would say just don't give up... it's not

an easy road. But if that's your passion, that's what gets you out of bed every morning.

Rather than doing something

else because lot of people are doing a gig just for the gig and they're not going

with the feeling so they're unhappy.

Not every day is going to be a catching day, you know what I mean. But

sometimes man...you make that haul and the net is almost bursting. [QAN] How can people follow you?

[ROBERT] On Facebook because I have a following...they're great. LinkedIn... that's a

corporate crowd.

But if all that's been overwhelming then you can google Robert Symons Bermuda

and get all of my links.

[QIAN] All right everyone ... Robert Symons everyone....YouTube you can google him...

he's on Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn... there's no excuse not

to find great music online from Robert Symons!

[ROBERT] Thanks a lot man!

How To Simply Improve Your Chipping By Using A Hybrid - Duration: 4:18.

Hello.

I'm Brian Fitzgerald The Golf Doctor.

And if you are having trouble with your chipping.

I am going to show you a little technique that will really shave a lot of strokes from

your score.

And it won't require that much practice.

If you are interested in that stay tuned.

[MUSIC]

So if you're having trouble chipping.

This is the video for you.

The simplest thought for a chip shot.

Is that you want the ball to go low and you want it to run.

Too many people think that chips shots should be hit in the air.

So if we keep that basic premise that we want it to go low and we want it to run.

I think the club in the bag that gives the best option to make the ball run.

Is a club with less loft.

So here I have my 3 hybrid.

So it's like a 3 iron.

It's a very forgiving club.

But the fact that it doesn't have very much loft.

This one only has 19 degrees.

Its going to give me the best chance of making the ball run.

So we have got a bit of a tricky little chip shot.

It's down hill all the way to the flag.

So you could putt it from here.

But I am going to say we are going to use a chip shot.

Now really all we need to do is to get the ball rolling somewhere in the direction of

the hole.

I think this is going to roll a little bit right to left down here but the big thing

is it's down hill.

In fact it might even go left to right at the end.

I will just neutralize it and go straight at the flag.

But we just need to get that ball rolling end over end.

So as we are chipping.

We don't want to try and manipulate the club with our wrists or anything like it.

I think we just try to keep our wrists reasonably stiff.

A bit like we would a putt.

We are really putting with a hybrid.

I made a video some time ago about how to chip with the thumbs down chipping method.

And it's just a little thought.

I will put a link at the top of the page to that video.

So I am just going to take my set up here.

I am going to play the ball toward the back of my stance.

So I am gripping down obviously.

And the club is quite long.

So that's a bit awkward.

But I will just do the best I can with it.

But the main objective here is just to get the ball rolling down the slope.

So we will see how I go.

So the ball is rolling, rolling.

It wasn't my best attempt.

But that's probably about 2 club lengths away from the hole.

Not a disaster.

It's certainly not over the back of the green.

It gives me a chance of having a go at that putt.

I might have another go at that one.

It's not about perfection.

We are just trying to get the ball close enough. And I am doing this not as a golf professional.

I am doing it to try and get you shooting better scores.

So if you can get that hybrid on to the green and 2 putt the worst you are going to have

is a bogey.

So we will do tht again.

I am going to aim it a fraction further left.

Because that one broke a little bit further to the right.

You can see I didn't really hit it that hard.

I just have to get that ball rolling down the slope.

And there it goes again.

I am just letting gravity do all the work.

We are just getting it down there on the green.

And if that was my worst chip I had hit in a round of golf.

I'd be pretty happy with that.

Because by using a pitching wedge or a sand wedge.

My worst shot can finish a lot further away than that shot.

It's not perfect but we are just trying to eliminate that those situations where instead

of getting it down in 3 you get it down in 4 or 5.

So we just keep it simple.

We just use the hybrid.

Think of it as a putt.

Get the ball rolling.

And I think you will find you will lower your score by quite a bit.

Thank you for letting me help you with your golf.

I see it before me, she chases after her anchor and you a possessed one

you dare to put your little sorrow at the suffering of the world

people who experience a greater pain than you, every second

you know it, and yet you must be compassionate

her ungrateful, I will not interfere with your fate

only this I will give with you, she is awakened her true me

And it had two accent pillows to go with it.

Yep.They did.

Fantastic!

What did you see Chet?

I saw a new dining collection.

Um, a lot of you will remember that we do carry the Scott Living Collections.

It has a beautiful distressed finish to the wood.

As well as a wonderful combination with the metals.

The sideboard server which stuck out for me is not your traditional up and down... you

know square box.

It has some great angles on it.

It's actually like a stand alone piece.

Almost a conversation piece you could say.

Yep.

Great.

Uh, feature with the drawers.

And overall just a nice piece.

Those Scott brothers know how to do it right hey?

They do!

They're great.

A little bit tall.

Yeah, a little bit tall.

We got to meet them today.

Very nice guys.

Which was a highlight!

We'll see you guys in the next video.

Hey, It's ME (Eve Anderson) - Duration: 0:57.

Hi, my name is Eve.

Nice to meet you!

Hello YouTube.

So, before I put myself out there on YouTube we have to sort a few things out.

So, I'm german.

That means you have to deal with my accent.

And I hope you like it.

Sometimes I have a really hard time to pronounce things or sometimes I miss the words.

I started a German dating and relationship blog first, since last I do it in English.

I'll give you a lot of tips and can help you with your relationships and your love life.

I think like doing videos is the best way to give people all the information and all

the advice they need and that's exactly what I want to do.

I hope you liked it and see you in my first video.

My Everything [CC] - Duration: 3:31.

You wanted everything

and I gave you everything

but my everything was too much for you

because my everything

is late night I love you's, and drive safely's, and text me when you get home's

my everything

is future plans, and kept promises,

and never being able to hold you long enough

the past wrapped up in pretty packages, because memories are priceless

and also because I can't afford anything else

my everything

is not caring that you always left the toilet seat up, and the towel on the floor

and the jeans right next to the clothes basket

my everything

is making dinner and doing the dishes too

because you had a long day, and so did I

but my watch stopped working when I met you.

my everything

is meteor showers on car hoods

and sweet notes hidden under windshield wipers

and words

that wouldn't exist

if you didn't exist

But the thing about my everything

is that it's all or nothing

And my everything is also...

being on a first name basis with my doctors

my everything

is hospital visits, and blood tests, and

moderately gross side effects from various medications

to counter the moderately gross symptoms from my various conditions

my everything

is sometimes not being able to get out of bed

which you only ever seemed to mind

when my clothes were on.

my everything

is a pink slip.

convincing myself that shining scars

are just permanent reminder that things are better

than they were

when things were worse.

my everything

is a paternal ghost

whose voice I can't remember

even though it used to sing me to sleep.

my everything

is a long list of diagnoses you can't pronounce

and a house full of mobility aids that were marketed toward grandmothers

my everything is knowing

I will never get to be a grandmother

you wanted everything

and I gave you everything

but my everything was too much for you

so you chose nothing instead

and it hurt, but more than anything

I was jealous

that you were able to choose nothing over my everything...

because my everything is too much for me, too.

This poem is a sample from my new book

entitled 'I Loved You Once'

It will be live on Amazon - October 12th for $1.99

but it is available from now until then for pre-order for only .99 cents
