Hello! Today I'm going to be doing what I hope to be the first in a series of
videos all about audiobooks. I personally love audiobooks. I used to not like them,
I used to be one of those people that said "Listening to audiobooks isn't
really reading, I think that they're stupid and I don't like them and it
makes me uncomfortable." But then I listened to the Lunar
Chronicles by Marissa Meyer on audio and I fell in love with audiobooks and I
haven't stopped listening to audiobooks. I've been listening to audiobooks every
month for almost two years now, I've probably listened to more audiobooks in
the last two years than I have read physical books because they're just so
convenient. I can listen to them when I'm going to work and when I'm coming home,
even sometimes at work I can just sit at my desk when I have a project that's
gonna keep me chained to my desk for a while I can put on an audiobook and it
helps me get through the day. I love audiobooks. I'm a huge advocate for
audiobooks because they're convenient and they're a lot of fun. And if you
find the right audiobook for you, you find the right narrator, you listen to
that one audiobook that can change your whole mind about it and honestly that's
how I feel about audiobooks. So I am 100% on the audiobook train now. So I want to
start a series of videos about audiobooks. I want to do audiobooks for
beginners, audiobooks are for people who have been listening to audiobooks for a
while, I want to talk about some of my favorite audiobook narrators, I want to
talk about some of my personal favorite audiobooks, I want to do a video maybe
about tips about listening to audiobooks, and I'm just really excited to do all
the videos about audiobooks because I love them so much. They've made my life
so much easier when it comes to reading and today I'm actually going to be doing
my Audiobook TBR. I want to share all the books that I have on my immediate audio
book TBR. These are all the books that I personally own on Audible. I know that
Audible isn't the most accessible platform for listening to audiobooks
because it is kind of expensive. But I love Audible because they have deals all
the time. And that's why I have so many audiobooks to listen to is because
they do sales all the time, or they'll do a buy one, get one free or
buy one book with your credit, get one or two books free. it is an amazing service.
This is not a sponsored video by the way, I just really love Audible. But I do
understand that it isn't the most accessible platform for audiobooks for a
lot of people. That's why I also listen to a lot of audiobooks on Overdrive and
I am a huge advocate for the Overdrive platform or Libby I guess is what a lot
of people use now. My library personally just doesn't have a lot of books that
I'm interested in on audio. Every once in a while they'll get like a new release
or something that I'm super interested in or I can recommend books to them, but
they don't always buy the books that I recommend. So that's why I did go ahead
and subscribe to Audible because it just opened up a lot more opportunities for
me to listen to the books that I want to listen to. But if you are in a
library system that has a really decent Overdrive, I would definitely recommend
audiobooks on that platform because they're free first of all and it's just
a great way to discover new books that you might not have known about before.
So as I said I want to talk about all of the books that are on my personal
audiobook TBR. I actually have 19 books on my audiobook TBR, which does seem a
bit excessive. But actually a lot of the audiobooks that I have on Audible are
books that I own in a physical format as well. Just because I know what I'm
interested in reading and I know what kind of stories I like to listen to on
audiobook so I try to get audiobooks with my credits that I already own the
physical book just so that I don't add more to my TBR. But also that I think I'm
really gonna enjoy listening to and I always listen to the sample to see if
I'm gonna like the narrator or whatever. If I don't like the narrator I won't buy
the audiobook because that's a waste of money. But I do you have quite a few books
that I already own that I also have the audiobook of. Some of these books I don't
own because they were in the deals or sales section or just because I'm
interested in the book but I don't own the physical book yet and a couple of
these are books that I have actually already read before but I want to reread
them via audiobook because I've heard good things about the audiobook or I
just want to experience it in that platform. So that's kind of the three
categories I'm going to be doing today. First category to talk about is books
that I don't own but have the audiobook of and then I'm gonna talk about books
that I do own and have already read and also want to reread via audiobook and
then I'm gonna talk about all the rest of the books that I haven't read yet but
have the audiobook of. I'm gonna try not to go into too much detail about each
individual book because I do have a lot of books to talk about and it's going to
end up being a really long video anyway I'm afraid. But I'm gonna go into a
little bit of detail and hopefully this is something you enjoy. because I'm
gonna be doing a lot of videos about audiobooks in 2018. So as I said I'm
gonna start with the books that I don't own but have on my audiobook TBR. The
first is My Lady Jane by Cynthia Hand, Brodie Ashton and Jodi Meadows. This is
a YA kind of historical retelling of Lady
Jane Grey I believe. I have heard some really really fantastic things about
this book, I've heard it's really funny and I've heard it's really enjoyable and
it's also the first in I believe a trilogy of companion stories all
centering around different Jane's in history and literature which is really
exciting. And I really like co-authored books so I'm interested to see how this
one translates on audio. I also have Brooklyn by Colm Toibin. I have actually
seen most of the movie Brooklyn but I've never read the book and I have heard
really amazing things about the book so I'm really interested to see if I like it.
Another YA book I have on my audio book TBR is Walk on Earth a Stranger by
Rae Carson. This is the first in a trilogy I believe about a girl who can
sense gold and it takes place during the California Gold Rush and I believe there
are some like Oregon Trail type vibes in this first book. I've heard some
really great things about Rae Carson's writing style, so I'm hoping that I
really enjoy this. Marlena by Julie Buntin is actually a book that was a
Book of the Month selection a few months ago. I didn't pick it but I've heard a lot of
really positive things about this book, specifically from Mollie at molliereads. She
read it earlier this year and I think it might be her favorite book of the
year so far, I'm not really sure but she made me really intrigued to read the
story. I don't know anything about the book but just the way she talked about
it made me really want to read it and I actually think it was an Audible Daily
Deal one day so I bought it because why not. Another first book in a YA
fantasy series is The Star-Touched Queen by Roshani Chokshi. I don't know a whole lot
about this book either, I think it centers around the zodiac and it has a
lot of influences of Indian culture which is super interesting. I've heard
amazing things about this story so I'm hoping to really enjoy it. And then I
have two non-fiction books. I have the Year of
Magical Thinking by Joan Didion, which is a book that I've been wanting to read
forever. It is about Joan Didion's life after she
loses her husband and her daughter I believe. I'm not really 100% sure but
I've heard so many amazing things about this book, so many people love it, it's so
many people's favorite book, and it's only a five hour long audiobook so I
feel like this is a book I can get through relatively quickly and I'm
hoping to really really enjoy it. I kind of think I will. And lastly this
is actually the book that started my Audible subscription because Goodreads
was doing a thing where you could get this audiobook for free. And so I joined
Audible, got the audiobook, and have not looked back since.
And that is Born a Crime by Trevor Noah. I don't know a whole lot about Trevor
Noah which is why I haven't read this book yet. But because it was a free audio
book through Goodreads one day I got it and I'm hoping to listen to it. I love
listening to celebrity memoirs and I believe Trevor Noah narrates it himself
and so I'm really interested to see how I feel about it. So those are all the
audiobooks that I don't own, now I'm going to talk about the audiobooks that
I do own that I have read before but want to reread via audiobook. I got the
Cuckoo's Calling by Robert Galbraith aka JK Rowling. This is the first book in the
Cormoran Strike series. I really love the Cormoran Strike books, I haven't read the
third one yet but I'm hoping to reread the first two and then read the third
one and I'm thinking I might reread the first one via audiobook because I do
have the audiobook as I said. I just love this story so I'm interested to revisit
it, I haven't read it in like four years so hoping to get around to that and
really enjoy the audiobook. I also got the audiobook of my favorite classic of
all time and that is Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte. I got the version of
the audiobook that is narrated by Thandie Newton. I love the fact that Audible does
classics narrated by celebrities because it's a very familiar voice reading a
story that might be a little bit more challenging to get through. Jane Eyre is my
favorite classic of all time so I'm really interested to see how I feel
about the audiobook, I honestly think I'll love it. And along similar lines, I also
have at the audiobook of my favorite book of all time and that is The Time
Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger. I've read this book so many times and
I'm really excited to listen to it because I love this story so much and
every single time I read it I get something new out of it and I can't wait
to see what I get out of listening to the audiobook. Definitely think that 2018
is gonna be the year that I reread the Time Traveler's Wife for the probably
fifth time because it's my favorite book ever. And the last set of
books I want to talk about in this video
are all the books that I do own but haven't read yet but also got the
audiobook of. I got the audiobook of Bad Feminist by Roxane Gay because this is a
nonfiction book, it's a series of essays and I for some reason really like
listening to nonfiction on audio. It's not narrated by Roxane Gay, I don't
remember who the narrator of the audiobook is but it's a narrator I
recognized and so I got it. And this is another one of those books that I'm just
waiting for what I feel to be the right time to read it and once I get that
feeling I'm hoping to listen to the audiobook so we'll see how it goes. I'm
not always the biggest fan of listening to fantasy on audio because I have a
hard time with the world-building, it's a lot harder to kind of picture a fantasy
world in your mind in an audiobook format because you don't get to flip
back and forth and try to revisualize, there's no map. But I have found that I like listening
to YA fantasy on audio because it's not quite as complex, it's not quite as
involved as adult fantasy and so I did get the audiobook of Snow Like Ashes by
Sara Raasch. This is the first in a series that I've been meaning to read
for a while and just haven't gotten around to so when I saw that the
Audiobook was on sale or was a daily deal I just snagged it up because I have
a problem. The same can be said for The Bone Season by Samantha Shannon, the
first in what I think is going to be a 7 book series all about clairvoyance.
I'm a little bit intimidated by this book because I have heard that it's a
little bit more complex, the world-building is a little bit slower,
and there's just so much involved in the story so I don't know how well it will
translate to audiobook. But I thought because I haven't ever really felt
inclined to pick up the physical book as long as I've owned it, I thought maybe
the audiobook might urge me to do so, so we shall see. Another classic that I have
the audiobook of is My Antonia by Willa Cather. This is a book that I've
had on my shelf for a while and just haven't ever gotten around to reading
and the audiobook was like a daily deal or something so I got it. Maybe that'll
actually spark me to finally read this book, we shall see. A relatively new
addition to my physical book library is Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier. I am so
excited to read this book and then I heard a lot of really positive things
about the audiobook so I decided to get it because why not. I'm hoping to really
enjoy the audiobook. If I don't like the audiobook then I'll switch back to the
physical book, but I'm hoping that maybe this is a story that will translate
really well to audiobook. I also have the Audible exclusive production of The
Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood, it's narrated by Claire Danes. Like I said
earlier, I love the books that are narrated by celebrities so I'm hoping to
enjoy the audiobook. I have actually listened to the first like hour and a
half of the audiobook of The Handmaid's Tale and I really like the way she reads
the story so I'm hoping that this will be another one that I can get to
relatively soon and just fly through the audiobook because it's not too long and
I am just really intrigued by the story. Another Audible daily deal was Orphan
Train by Christina Baker Klein. This is a book that I bought for myself with
Christmas money last year and haven't ever read. It's a really short book,
it's a relatively short audiobook so I thought why not try to consume the story
that way and I just haven't done it yet because I have a lot of options here
clearly. Another daily deal that I got the audiobook of is My Brilliant Friend
by Elena Ferrante. This is a book that is pretty popular on Booktube, it's pretty
well loved on Booktube. And I really want to read it but I thought why not try to
read it via audiobook because that sounds fun and I really liked the sample
of the audiobook that I listened to so I got it. Plus it was a daily deal so it was
only like $2 which is why I have so many audiobooks on my TBR. And lastly the
last book on my audiobook TBR is Burial Rites by Hannah Kent. This is an audio
book that I was really wanting to listen to before the end of the year but I
didn't manage to do so. I guess I technically still could, but I just
haven't felt inclined to. I loved the sample of the audiobook that I listened
to so I'm hoping that this one will be one of my favorites in the audiobook genre.
So those are all the books that I have on my audiobook TBR. Yes it is an
incredibly excessive collection of audiobooks I acknowledge that but I just
love audiobooks. I like having them and I like having options, it's kind of like
having books on my shelf I like to have some options for what audiobook
I'm gonna listen to next. If you've read any of the books that I mentioned in this
video, please let me know down in the comments, let me know what you thought
about them. Specifically have you listened to any of these books on audio
as well? I'd really love to know your thoughts on the audiobook as a whole,
let me know that down in the comments. And lastly, do you like audio books is it
something that you try to listen to regularly or are you more of a physical
book reader? I'd love to know that as well. Thank you so much for watching, I
hope you enjoyed this video, and I will see you again very soon. Bye!
