Welcome back Guardians.
Today we are going to jump straight into a Detailed analysis of the Fall of Osiris web
comic by Bungie.
I am not going to read out the entire comic, but rather draw your attention to significant
lore details or details that can be expanded upon with the lore from destiny 1 or destiny
2.
So, if you have not read the web comic, I recommend that you read the comic first then
come back to this video.
This is myelin games and I hope you enjoy this latest Destiny 2 Lore episode.
[INTRO] Let's work our way from Cover to cover.
Starting with the first image, it is interesting to see Osiris holding Light, or what I assume
is Light, shaded in purple, this is more typically associated with Voidwalkers and a little bit
odd considering Osiris is depicted wielding Dawnblade in the Destiny 2 trailers, and in
the Destiny 1 grimoire cards he was also assumed to be a solar based Warlock, i.e. a Sunsinger.
He was often presumed to be a Sunsinger in Destiny 1 because of how he was described;
essentially when people looked at him they were blinded.
In addition, many of the preaching's of Osiris in the Destiny 1 grimoire card referenced
the Sun and melting your physical self to become something greater, this corresponding
better with Osiris being a solar based subclass.
Whilst it is odd for Osiris to wielding Void like light, it is not impossible, within the
lore the most elite guardians, typically the Vanguard, can wield multiple subclasses.
We will talk about this concept again when we get to Saint-14 in the comic.
Moving on to the Next page, what is most interesting about this page, is in my mind this is cementing
the foundational Lore of Destiny, specifically the creation of Guardians, the Traveler, the
collapse and the Darkness.
With Destiny 2, they said that some concepts would be shelved and potentially not return,
whilst others would continue, and that Destiny 1 was like comic book number 0 i.e. it only
introduced some things and gave a taste of the Destiny Universe.
They also admitted that there was a lot of confusion around what the Darkness was and
that it was essentially removed from Destiny 2 because Destiny 2 would focus on the light,
and have a greater understanding of what it means to be a Guardian.
I am going to speak about the Darkness in greater details later in the web comic.
But this first page is pretty interesting, that these paragraphs keeps the foundation
lore of destiny basically exactly the same, it is very close to the Destiny 1 cutscene
with the Speaker.
The Darkness pursued the Traveler, The Traveler sacrificed itself, created ghosts which lead
to the creation of Guardians.
For those who are new to the lore, there is a theory from Destiny 1 girmoire cards that
is relatively well supported, that says that Rasputin the warmind detected the Darkness
and that the Traveler was about to abandon Earth, so Rasputin actually fired upon the
Traveler crippling it, forcing it to make a defence mechanism, which turned out to be
the Ghosts.
Obviously, at this stage, whether it is the truth or not they are sticking with the story
that Traveler sacrificed itself, this is the foundation lore that is told to the people
of the City.
The significance of keeping this, is it allows Osiris to argue that the Traveler is not our
saviour and did not altruistically sacrifice itself but rather it is the cause of all of
our problems.
This theme that the Traveler is to blame for our problems is a theme that re-occurs throughout
the web comic.
In regards to Destiny 1 lore, there is a lot of truth to this theory, that the Traveler
caused all of our problems.
For example, in the Books of Sorrow, we know the Hive and Oryx pursed the Traveler to eat
its light and create the perfect universe, and you may argue that if the Traveler had
never arrived, we may have never faced the Hive.
Likewise, the Fallen had their own Golden Age with the Traveler, however we only fight
the Fallen because they want the Traveler back.
Turns out that we also fight Ghaul and the Cabal because Ghaul wants to be chosen by
the Traveler.
And lastly when it comes to the Vex, well the relationship between the Traveler and
the Vex is much more complicated, but it does seem that the Traveler is always around when
the Vex are there, i.e.
Venus and after the Traveler terraformed Mercury.
Also remember that the Vex cannot simulate the Light, so guardians pose a big threat,
in addition, I have had a theory that the Vex used Guardians to defeat Oryx, because
they were having a hard time dealing with Oryx's Taken Powers.
SO, Osiris is suggesting that if the Traveler never arrived, then we would have never encountered
any of these enemies, and there is definitely some truth to that.
The last thing to note on this page, is it confirms Osiris is the leader of the Vanguard,
or the Vanguard Commander, which is consistent with the Destiny 1 girmoire cards, and in
fact, it is Saint-14 who recommends Osiris for Vanguard Commander.
Interestingly, in the Saint-14 quest line in Destiny 2, Saint-14 is confirmed as the
First ever vanguard commander, so the implication might be that Saint-14 stood down from Vanguard
Commander to recommend Osiris.
The first page introduces Osiris and Ikora Rey and the first depiction of Ikora Rey being
the student of Osiris.
This is definitely new to the Lore, in the Destiny 1 grimoire cards Osiris was always
thought to be the apprentice of the Speaker, as the grimoire cards talk about how the Speaker
took him under his wing.
However, in Destiny 2 it is very clear that Ikora Rey is the apprentice to Osiris.
In this scene, Ikora Rey mentions that the Vex aren't the only ones that want us dead
since the Traveler arrived, which comes back to Osiris's original point, would we have
all this conflict if the Traveler never arrived in the first place.
The next scene is important for establishing the Followers of Osiris.
In destiny 1 they were called the Cult of Osiris but from what I can see, this has now
been replaced with the Followers of Osiris.
Ikora says that she was one student but there were many others.
Essentially, Osiris did not hold back from what he really thought about the Traveler,
openly speaking about his theories.
Consequently his preaching's spread through the City.
Bungie has really changed the Cult of Osiris since Destiny 1, not only changing the name
to Followers of Osiris, but also how they function, the Followers of Osiris was not
as fan boi-ish in Destiny 1, especially Brother Vance, Brother Vance had much more mystery
surrounding him and in-game he would even say that he was once a Guardian but now is
something more.
Destiny 2 has squashed this lore, in the Machina Dei 4 pulse rifle Brother Vance says,
To be a Guardian!
How I longed for it.
After a near-death experience in which I lost my eyesight, I even believed that I had become
a Guardian, that the great Osiris had granted me my dearest wish.
This is very contradictory to Destiny 1 lore, Brother Vance was a guardian in Destiny 1
but ascended after following Osiris's teachings, he became something more.
Destiny 2 is much more about the Followers of Osiris being fanatical and taking everything
that Osiris says as the truth.
The theme of the web comic, that Osiris blames the Traveler for all the Cities problems is
openly expressed in one of the next scenes, Osiris says,
"The Traveler is the first mover for the Vex and all the other threats we now face.
If you want to know who's responsible for the death of billions, there's your answer"
Osiris's judgement of the Traveler and thirst for the truth is very consistent with the
lore from Destiny 1 , the Speaker says this about Osiris in the Osiris grimoire card,
I watched as you grew tired of strike missions and the grueling, unproductive sessions with
the Cryptarchs.
That was when I took you under my wing.
I saw our future in you.
But your curiosity was voracious— How much of a Guardian's personality and memories were
true?
How much had been fabricated by their Ghost?
Did Guardians share particular personality traits— a willingness to yield to authority,
a tendency to do anything anyone asked for the promise of uncertain reward, a blind knight-errant
mentality?
Had the Traveler manufactured all of you as living weapons?
I admit, I found your questions divisive and disloyal, and I feared you might be capable
of breaking our unity when the City's position had grown so tenuous.
Why divert attention away from the Traveler, our only hope?
Whilst the D1 girmoire card talks about all of Osiris's other theories, the D2 comic
is pretty consistent with the same theme, Osiris does not trust the Traveler and blames
the Traveler.
Osiris was so open with these opinions that the Followers of Osiris were born and Osiris
was elevated to celebrity level.
Now the Next scene is what really surprised me, Osiris refers to the Vex as "Literal
forces of Darkness".
If you remember back to just prior to the launch of Destiny 2 Luke Smith and Noseworthy
did an interview with Game Informer and actually spoke quite extensively about the Darkness,
this is what was said.
"We're exploring the relationship between the player and the Ghost in terms of Light,
and Ghaul's coveting of the Light.
As such, we wanted to carve off other things that we didn't think were important to the
release, such as words like The Darkness."
Players of Destiny 1 will recall that The Darkness was a term we heard a lot throughout
the life cycle of that game, but there was rarely agreement about what (or who) the term
might apply to.
"We've never really said what [The Darkness] means," Smith continues.
"Ultimately, we do owe our players a story there – what is The Darkness? – but that's
not this game.
We wanted to remove as much of the extra terminology as possible and focus on telling the Destiny
2 story.
"The Cabal have nothing to do with the Darkness," Noseworthy says.
"They are not of the Darkness, or its representatives.
The Hive are the closest, because they worship the Darkness – but you can worship a thing
that you are not."
Those are important distinctions for lore followers, but it also points to a freedom
for the team to let the Cabal have their own complexities and nuance, freed from the mythology
surrounding The Darkness.
This made a lot of sense, it was great to have some acknowledgement that the Darkness
was confusing, and especially good to have greater clarity that the enemies are not the
Darkness, even though the Hive worship the Darkness.
This was definitely an issue that plagued the early story of Destiny 1 as you could
actually see some bounties that refer to minions of the darkness, even though later down the
track the enemies in destiny were not meant to represent the Darkness.
So, the reset button was hit pretty hard on defining the Darkness for Destiny 2 and this
comic book is the first real reference to the Darkness in Destiny 2, so does that mean
that the Vex are representatives of the Darkness or linked to the Darkness in some way, or
is this just meant to represent how Osiris does not really understand the Vex yet?
Maybe I am looking too much into it… but at the end of the day, this was part of the
problem with defining the darkness in Destiny 1, if you start referring to enemies as minions
of the darkness, forces of the darkness, it starts to muddy the water on what the Darkness
actually is, so I do find it a tad odd that after resetting the definition of the Darkness
that have basically reintroduced it in the same way.
Moving along, the Next scene Ikora is quite affectionately cuddling Osiris to his surprise.
Interestingly, from Destiny 1 lore, Ikora Rey did have a love interest at one stage
and it was not Osiris.
In destiny 1 during Rise of Iron they introduced a character called Shun who was part of Owl
Sector the group responsible for trying to resolve the SIVA outbreak and Shun's pet
name for Ikora Rey was Korrie.
Whilst we don't really know if Ikora Rey was in a romantic relationship with Osiris,
she at the very least had strong feelings for him as a mentor.
Have a listen to Margaret Stohl, Destiny 2 Narrative Director had to say about them,
Osiris is a study in extremes; he was Ikora's mentor, but he broke Ikora's heart.
He was the greatest leader of the Vanguard but then a Vanguard exile.
Like most of us, his strengths and his weaknesses are tied together, and that's what makes
him a great character.
But what makes him a great hero is how he never hesitates to make massive personal sacrifices
for the greater good.
That and the depth of his relationship with the other "woman" in his life, Sagira, his
ghost.
She's where you see his heart come out...
Saint-14 is next to be introduced into the webcomic.
He is upset with Osiris's lead as Vanguard Commander.
Saint-14 refers to the Speaker as Father and Osiris responds with, "Don't tell me you
still believe in the Speaker enough to call him Father", which confirms that Saint-14
is not the biological son of the Speaker, there is no backstory of Saint-14 being human
first and the son of the speaker and then converted to an Exo, or anything like that,
it is purely metaphoric, he refers to the Speaker as father to demonstrate his loyalty.
Interestingly, Saint-14 calling the Speaker Father was introduced in Destiny 1 during
the age of triumph, so obviously this storyline has been in the works for some time.
The next scene, to my surprise, we see Saint-14 using a titan smash, once again confirming
that Guardians can use multiple sub classes.
I have covered this topic in a lot of detail in previous lore videos about subclasses,
but essentially Guardians typically have an affinity for a certain subclass, but can learn
other subclasses, and the Vanguard are our primary mentors in teaching us how to use
the Light in different ways, so typically the Vanguard have control over multiple subclasses,
considering that Saint-14 was a Vanguard commander it would make sense that he could be both
a defender titan and striker titan.
I will likely make an update video on the Destiny 2 subclasses with more detail in the
future.
Osiris and Saint-14 progress from a physical battle to a screaming match, with Osiris calling
the Speaker a dictator.
So, Osiris's teachings thus far is the Vex are the major threat to the City, The Traveler
is the root of all our problems and the Speaker is a dictator.
The next scene depicts a young Saladin, Saint-14, Andral Brask and Ikora Rey.
Interestingly how Saladin does not have any grey hairs yet.
The reason why this is interesting is that Saladin himself says that whilst Guardians
are not invincible, they are immortal, so technically I wouldn't expect Guardians
to age.
I have had subscribers suggest that Saladin has grey hair because he was revived as a
Guardian when he was already aged.
SO I guess Guardians can age.
Andral Brask is also introduced and he is the Hunter Vanguard prior to Cayde-6, and
of course, he I speaking about his top scouts Cayde-6 and how Cayde has located the Kell
of Kings.
This scene appears to show them preparing to defend the City at the battle of twilight
gap, we know that Saladin Forge lead the City's defense during this time.
In addition, we know that the House of Devils attacked the City, however they were actually
controlled by the Fallen House of Kings, so the fact that Cayde-6 is reporting about the
House of Kings, seems also consistent with the Destiny 1 lore.
In preparation for the attack, the Speaker asks Ikora if she thinks the City can be defended
without the Vanguard Commander, Osiris.
This once again makes me think that they are preparing for the Battle of Twlight Gap, especially
since Ikora Rey refers to the Fallen.
Interesting, the Battle of Six Fronts which took place before Twilight Gap, Osiris did
help with the defence and the grimoire cards describe how he appeared to be everywhere
at once on that day, this was also likely to why Saint-14 recommending him as vanguard
commander.
Ikora turns to Sagira to try and convince Osiris, however Sagira mentions that he has
seen some things, I believe this likely Osiris's first visions of the future and the prophecies,
hence why Osiris is convinced that the Vex are the greatest threat, why would he be concerned
about the Fallen if he has seen the Vex ability to control the Future?
Ikora Rey mentions how the City is fractured by Osiris teachings, which is consistent with
Destiny 1 lore, whilst Sagira pokes fun of the speaker much more, saying that he only
speaks, which has a lot of truth, because in the Destiny 2 cutscene the speaker confirms
that the traveller never spoke to him.
As predicted the fanatic followers of Osiris start to divide the last city as they preach
in the street.
The fan-dom is cranked up to a level 10 as they mob Osiris on first sight.
At this point, Osiris wants nothing to do with his Followers, even though Ikora tries
to convince Osiris to encourage the followers to find their own truths.
Regardless, Ikora believes whatever Osiris writes will become holy text, rather than
treated like research.
Osiris reinforces that once his research is finished, his research will no longer be misinterpreted
and everyone will understand, he says that he will speak of the future, data driven predictions.
Obviously before Osiris has finished his research, people begin selling his teachings advertised
as Prophecies of Osiris.
Now, I actually think there are two different types of prophecies, these prophecies created
by the fanatic Followers of Osiris and the actual prophecies developed by Osiris from
traveling into the infinite forest and actually seeing the future.
I think the prophecies we collect with the infinite forge is actually the real Osiris
Prophecies, but the comic book is also suggesting that the Followers made up their own prophecies
based upon what Osiris said.
It is at this point that the Speaker decides to burn all of the Osiris texts.
Interestingly, Ikora Rey, Osiris student actually hid the prophecies and text in her personal
library.
The West of Sunfall 7 lore tab reads, Well, here's what you missed.
It started because of his Lost Prophecies.
A misnomer—the prophecies were always accessible to those who cared about them, but the Followers
proclaimed them "lost" to a City that had censored all Osirian material.
And even then the City didn't truly lose them, for when the Speaker ordered me to destroy
Osiris's writings, I placed the documents in my private library instead.
I don't believe in burning books, regardless of my opinion of the author.
So, some of those prophecies lived on, and I hope that Ikora had more accurate prophecies
than the ones created by the fanatic followers of Osiris.
And that is where the comic book concludes, with the Speaker claiming an Osiris text as
Heresy and that it should be burnt.
I am really looking forward to Part 2, because they have introduced the Fallen and potentially
the Battle of Twilight Gap, so they could explore that, BUT more importantly they can
now follow Osiris as he leaves the City.
We have almost no lore about what happened when he left the City, so it will be completely
new territory.
