Removing pollutants from water is the ultimate goal

of the purification process.

However, current methods of removal

have their share of complications.

And tend to be quite energy and chemical intensive,

especially when it involves removing contaminants

at extremely low levels.

But now a team of researchers at MIT

have developed a new system that could

provide an alternative for removing

specific, unwanted, compounds.

And their new system is controlled solely

by electrical means.

The novel approach relies on an electrochemical process

to selectively remove organic contaminants

such as pesticides, chemical waste products,

and pharmaceuticals from the water,

even when these contaminants are present in small, but still

dangerous, concentrations.

Their system of removal involves two main parts,

chemically treated surfaces, and electricity.

Here's how the system works.

First, surfaces are coated with water

known as Faradaic materials, which are materials that

can undergo reactions to become positively

or negatively charged.

Then an electrical source is added.

As water flows between these now chemically treated electrodes,

the surface materials can be tuned

to bind strongly with a specific type of pollutant molecule.

Here we see the system at work removing

a pollutant represented by the green fluorescence.

Over time, the surfaces are tuned, and thus become bound,

to specific molecules until the water

color goes from bright fluorescent green to clear.

The researchers say that systems such as this

might ultimately be useful for water purification

systems in remote areas in the developing world, where

access to resources and power are limited.

For example, the new, highly efficient,

electrically operated system could run on power,

from solar panels.

Trump reg cuts save immediate $3.7 billion, $86 billion overall

As a congressional deadline to repeal federal regulations nears, a new report revealed Tuesday

that just 13 rules scrapped by President Trump and Congress will have an immediate savings

of $3.7 billion and a potential windfall to taxpayers of $86 billion, potentially more

than $700 per taxpayer.

The report from American Action Forum also said that the Trump actions will eliminate

4.2 million hours of paperwork for businesses, state workers and individuals.

"Congress and the administration have made a lasting impact on regulation so far in 2017.

With more than a dozen Congressional Review Act resolutions, they have removed at least

$3.7 billion in total regulatory costs," said report author Sam Batkins, director of policy

for AAF.

In the report, provided to Secrets, he added that the cuts via the CRA "marked the first

step in an aggressive effort to reform the administrative state."

An earlier report indicated that the long range savings could top $86 billion.

What's more, Trump is just getting started on repealing regulations and is pushing his

departments, notably the Environmental Protection Agency, to look for ways to strike a balance

with businesses.

And there are two large repeals still being considered by the Senate, one on fracking

and another on state retirement regulations, that could boost savings to $5.5 billion.

"As of this writing, there are two other resolutions that the Senate could adopt before the expiration

of the expedited review period, a $1.8 billion fracking rule and a state retirement rule.

If so, that would bring the total amount saved to $5.5 billion, or $1.4 billion annually.

In addition, Congress is taking a more formal approach to repeal of a rule from the Department

of Transportation on 'Metropolitan Planning.'

This non-CRA bill would save another $86 million, and curiously, it enjoys overwhelming bipartisan

support.

Both the House and Senate bills are sponsored by Democrats from the Chicago area.

The Senate passed the legislation by unanimous consent and the House by a 417 to 3 margin,"

explained Batkins.

Huawei P10 comes in a very well presented package,

we love how this opens!

One more thing you love about this phone

and its presentation,

is that this comes with a nice little protective foil on it.

We really like the build quality of this phone.

It's an all metal unibody design

with a special cutout for the camera.

The top and the bottom bezel might be a bit to big

for smartphones nowadays,

but we don't mind that feature too much.

since it's super slim and it feels so good in the hand.

It is true that it resembles iPhone's design a lot,

minus the camera hump and some other details.

Some people love it, some people hate it,

We don't really mind it

since it's a rather attractive phone design.

This phone comes in variety of colors,

couple of those colors come

with a precision diamond cut texture in the back

like a gold version or a very attractive blue version.

SIM tray is on the upper left side of the phone

You can put 2 SIM cards in it,

or 1 SIM card and 1 micro SD card

On the bottom, you will find a headphone jack,

USB-C port and a speaker grill.

On the right we have volume rockers

and a textured power button with a touch of red color.

This device runs on Huawei's own Kirin 960 octa-core CPU

with four gigabyte of RAM

and offers generous 64 gigabytes of storage space

that can also be expanded with a microSD card if needed.

It's powered by 3200mAh battery,

and has a 5.1 inch full HD IPS display.

The LCD panel offers a breathtaking palette of vibrant colors

and produces stunningly sharp and clear images.

It's not a 4k display, we know, but we love it either way.

Unlike P9, the fingerprint reader is on the front this time.

It's super easy to set up and it's impressively fast.

The navigation key can be set up to your liking,

either by setting virtual navigation bar

or an off-screen navigation button

that is also a fingerprint reader.

Leica has a really nice dual and camera system for this phone

which is a great signature feature overall.

It combines the 12 megapixel RGB sensor

and 20 mega pixel monochrome sensor.

The front camera has 8 megapixels and a portrait mode

which makes P10 the first phone Huawei launched

that has front camera with Leica lenses.

We love this camera and all it's functions

but it's not a point and shoot type.

It's made for photography enthusiasts

and it really does take some time for you

to get used to it and to know all the features and how to use them.

Once you get in hang of all the possibilities this camera brings,

you can get some stunning portrait shots, night shots,

clear macro shots with great bokeh effect,

and many more others.

Play around a bit and see what works for you.

It has a lot of possibilities.

This phone is literally your photography playground.

P10 runs on the newest version of

famous Huawei's own EMUI 5.1 interface

on top of the Android Nougat 7.0

which makes it much faster with some new features

like possibility to bring back the app drawer if you want to

or change the temperature of your screen colors.

You can also change the size of the fonts and size of keyboard,

or enable the floating dock

that can be setup to have

all of your important shortcuts in one place.

Knock on the screen twice to take a screenshot,

The idea comes from cherry blossom tree planting,

I was teaching Japanese at "Sakura Foundation" and the foundation started tree planting,

We planted about 18 trees, 2 types, one of Kanzan and the other one, I don't remember but

At the beginning, we were just taking photos, planting and picnicking.

One and another, we've been getting presentations, workshops and booths. Became a Hanami Festival

3 WAYS AMERICANS ARE BEING DIVIDED TODAY

America is being divided, and it�s all part of the plan: the plan to program humans into

robots that fight, protest, and stir up verbal arguments. The media thrives on it � creating

fake news, decrying fake news, and reporting with few facts and plenty of bias.

Critical thinking has become void. We are being told to be all-in, whether that be all-in

for Trump or all-out for Trump. Anyone with the guts to go against the grain, that is,

to take pieces of good from all sides and create a more meaningful outlook, is pushed

away with the assumption that they aren�t educated enough, not interested enough to

make real change � to stand up for their country.

And it seems the American people agree that division exists and thrives in America. Over

the past 20-plus years, the public has perceived the nation as being more divided than united.

And it�s only gotten worse. In 2012, 69% of Americans believed the nation was divided.

As of 2016, that number has increased to 77%.

Blatant efforts to keep division exist in big ways.

Racism

To think that slavery was an accepted practice seems almost unfathomable given the way we

live today. To think that in the 1960s, blacks and whites were so severely divided is alarming

compared to now. But such comparisons only seem so far from each other when you think

about them in their specific contexts. On a greater level, this unrighteous division

lives on loud and clear, perhaps because it is being egged on.

For instance, in 2016, CNN clipped a statement from a black woman whose brother had been

murdered by the police. Despite the woman having actually stated that black people shouldn�t

burn down their own neighbourhoods, but should go to white neighbourhoods to protest, CNN

made it seem as if she were pleading for peace.

Boycotting

There�s a good reason to stand behind or refuse to support a company based on your

ethics, be them political, social, environmental, etc., but when people are boycotting Starbucks

for offering to hire 10,000 refugees, or are boycotting Budweiser because of an immigration-themed

Super Bowl ad they believed to send an anti-Trump message, there is only more room for division,

not unity.

It seems like everyone is boycotting someone these days. Businesses can�t stop taking

sides and making public statements, and the ones who lay low are getting targeted, too,

for not taking a stand. If you buy from a company or don�t buy from a company, you

are accused of being a racist-fascist-leftist-Trumpist-socialist-communist�the list of social pressures and name-calling

could go on forever.

Protesting

Let�s look at the recent Pepsi commercial. Though Pepsi claimed to have been trying to

�project a global message of unity, peace, and understanding,� the backlash was enough

to pull the ad. Featuring reality TV star Kendall Jenner, critics accused the soda giant

of appropriating a nationwide protest movement following police shootings of African Americans.

The reality of protests is nothing like what the Pepsi commercial envisioned. Though the

company was trying to relay peace, the reality is that Pepsi can�t fix things. But that�s

not even the point here. The point is actually that the backlash from the Pepsi commercial

is just as upsetting as the commercial itself. Why? Because it sends a message that unity

is just as wrong as division. It sends a message that no one can get it right.

Tolerance from the Left is called into question when violence is used to support a different

opinion. At the University of Florida, for instance, students started a Leftist Fight

Club that teaches people how to physically fight Trump supporters.

Just as disheartening as it is to think change can be made with a Pepsi, it is just as much

so to think that violence is the answer.

Being all-in or all-out is a social pressure that begets division. If only we could take

a deep breath and absorb more than we want to hear, how much more united could we actually

be?

just got more peaceful.

Last week,

China launched its first aircraft carrier

that can proudly carry the label,

"Made in China."

Why, they even broke a champagne bottle on it

and it didn't sink.

Xinhua reported the new aircraft carrier

comes complete with "propulsion and electricity installed."

That means no more paddling.

Now this is a big deal for China.

How big?

Well, I think the Register put it best—

it's 2.1 brontosaurus big.

That's about one brontosaurus shorter

than the Empire State Building.

The yet-unnamed aircraft carrier

is based on a Soviet design

and can carry 69 aircraft.

China's other aircraft carrier,

the Liaoning,

is a refurbished one bought off Ukraine

during the Soviet Union's going out of business sale.

Type 001A, as it's known now

will be fully operational by 2020.

And don't worry,

state-run Xinhua assures us,

it's all part of China's "peaceful development...

as well as to protect world peace."

Ah, world peace.

I guess Xinhua is getting ready for pageant season.

Definitely world peace!

It will be particularly good

for protecting the peace in China's territory in the South China Sea

from those no-good, invading Filipino fishermen.

The new aircraft carrier was launched

as part of a celebration marking the 68th anniversary

of the People's Liberation Army Navy.

It's a little confusing because

they have the word "army" in there,

whether it's the People's Liberation Army Air Force,

People's Liberation Army Rocket Force

or even the People's Liberation Army Army.

Maybe that's one of the things

that Xi Jinping will be streamlining.

Anyway, the People's Liberation Army Navy celebration

was not without SNAFU—

a Chinese term meaning

the Party planned it that way all along.

The Ministry of National Defense

released this image on its social media account of the Liaoning.

Apart from it looking terrible,

as Chinese netizens were quick to point out,

that's a Russian jet,

those are US destroyers,

and those J-10 jet fighters,

while indeed Chinese planes,

are not the J-15s that are actually found on the Liaoning.

To be fair,

it is much better than other government photoshop attempts.

Now they built this incredibly fast—

in only four years.

And according to a Defense Ministry Spokesman,

the lessons learned from building it

"will help China build more carriers faster in the future

and enable them to reach combat readiness quicker."

By comparison,

the United States latest aircraft carrier,

the USS Gerald Ford,

began construction eight years ago,

launched in 2013,

and is still being worked on.

Probably because it kept falling down stairs.

It is a more advanced aircraft carrier,

but the US has been building them since World War 2.

Which explains why the USS Gerald Ford

is 2.4 brontosaurus big.

But bigger isn't always better.

Is this the start of a new and formidable Chinese navy

capable of projecting its power throughout the region?

Well, not so fast.

The speed with which this new aircraft carrier was built

should be your first clue something isn't right.

There are huge technological gaps

between this new Chinese aircraft carrier and US ones,

The engines are steam powered,

rather than nuclear.

It's about half the size of the Ford.

It also relies on a ski jump ramp

to get aircraft into the air,

versus the catapult system the US has been using since World War II.

The problems go deeper.

Like China's lack of a joint operations command.

That's how the different branches of military talk to each other.

Even with a shiny new aircraft carrier,

without a functioning joint command,

the PLA's ability to project power will be stunted.

I spoke to Senior Researcher and Defense Analyst Andy Wolf,
