In this episode
I would like to
take you for a short
desktop safari
using macro photography
as our travelpod.
So if you're considering
the Nikkor 105mm f/2.8,
or if you're thinking about
trying out macro and getting some
extension rings for your already
existing lens collection,
or if the weather
is not exactly peachy
and you don't feel like
going out, then here are
some ideas and inspiration
for desktop-based photography.
With desktop safari
we're going to explore
organic matter which
can be very interesting
to build skills in macro photography.
Even if we don't have the option
to meet exotic species
somewhere in the wild.
To remedy this lack of access
to said wilderness,
when I'm on a walk,
I always keep my eyes open
for nice clean items such as:
feathers, shells, leaves, flowers,
dead butterflies or other insects.
These might not only be useful as props
for other photographs
but can become subjects
for macro study themselves.
Even a simple feather
can be approached
from many different perspectives.
To begin, let's make the feather float.
In my experience,
I find that the simplest
resolution to make things hover in the
air is to use
the power of my mind
but sewing thread
does the job just fine.
It is strong, thin and it takes only
a few minutes
to remove in post-production
using Lightroom or Photoshop.
Starting with a wide angle
and a decent sized object
a macro lens might not even be
necessary as wide angle lenses tend to
focus from quite a short distance.
So even by sticking to natural light
we can take drastically
different photographs.
Starting with a dreamy white on white
and negative like,
shot on a black background.
Notice how the change
of aperture between them
makes the feather
look almost extra light.
Play with some angles,
find one that appeals to you
and try adding a flash.
Tweaking the simplest of setups can
be a lot of fun.
Experiment with your ideas.
When we move from levitation to a more
steady tabletop,
the choice of surfaces
and backgrounds opens so many
possibilities that it's almost
mind-boggling.
Just to spark the imagination,
let me mention two variables
that play nicely
in the macro environment
these are:
any reflective surfaces
and interesting choice of props
for the background.
So today I'm playing with a new
polished black marble cutting board,
that we can make either
black or white depending on the angle.
For the background
I like using various
smartly placed objects.
Use a variety of shapes
and colors to get interesting bokeh.
Personally, I find that sequins deliver
on this tremendously well.
You can naturally combine
a number
of different surfaces,
backgrounds and objects
for more variety,
like this tiny feather
on a piece of skin shed by an iguana.
Again,
trying out different variations
and mixing things up is key,
as long as we
can find some pleasing harmony.
Most of all,
have some fun
and you might even
create a nice print
for your hall along the way.
