Top 5 Thomas Heatherwick Building Projects | The B1M - Duration: 5:07.

Described by Vanity Fair as the hottest designer in the world today the multi-faceted Thomas Heatherwick

has designed everything from furniture to buses along with numerous impressive works of architecture.

He is currently working on some of the world's most exciting projects,

including the spectacular pier 55 floating park in New York

and Google's new London headquarters, a collaboration with Bjarke Ingels.

Here we look at five projects that cemented Heatherwick's status as one of the world's top designers.

Before Heatherwick was a globe-trotting starchitect working on the world's most prestigious projects,

he was turning his hand to solving smaller scale problems.

Demonstrating an innovative approach to design that has become a hallmark of the Heatherwick Studio,

the Rolling Bridge is a pedestrian crossing like no other.

Situated in London's Paddington Basin the moveable bridge can retract allowing boats to pass.

While the majority of opening bridges have a single rigid element,

this extraordinary structure is constructed from eight triangular segments,

hinged at the walkway, that fold the bridge open under the control of hydraulic pistons.

This causes the bridge to curl into an octagon, which sits on the canal side.

In 2010 Heatherwick propelled himself onto the global stage with his spectacular pavilion at the Shanghai expo.

Created for the UK government, the pavilion was designed to standout

among the hundreds of competing pavilions at the largest expo ever held.

Rising to this challenge, Heatherwick created the Seed Cathedral.

The structure is a simple timber box through which 60,000 transparent acrylic rods protrude,

each with a seed embedded in its tip.

The 25 foot (or 7.5 meter) long strands move gently in the breeze giving the cube a shimmering effect.

In total over 70 million people visited the six month expo.

Heatherwick's construction won the gold award for best pavilion design,

along with the RIBA Lubetkin Prize for the most outstanding work of international architecture.

In Cape Town Heatherwick is reinventing an abandoned grain silo as a not-for-profit cultural institution,

housing the most significant collection of contemporary art from Africa.

The historic structure is made up of 42 vertical concrete tubes, each 110 feet (or 33 metres) tall.

As it has no large central space an ellipse is being carved out of the densely packed silos

to create a grand atrium.

Once completed in 2017 the structure will provide over 65,000 square feet (or 6,000 square metres)

of gallery space together with a rooftop sculpture garden,

art conservation facility, bookshops, cafe and restaurant.

In Singapore Heatherwick designed an academic building with no corridors.

Built for the Nanyang Technological University, the learning hub aims to

redefine the aspirations of a university building.

Aware of the changing nature of education in the internet age, where students can learn anywhere,

Heatherwick created a building that fosters sociability and togetherness.

Abandoning traditional classroom arrangements, at the Hive each teaching area opens onto

a shared circulation space around the central atrium. This arrangement creates a dynamic environment,

encouraging incidental interactions between students and teaching staff.

Topping our list is the Vessel, Heatherwick's 150-foot (or 45 metre) tall center piece

for the vast Hudson Yards development in New York.

While the Hive had no corridors, this structure is composed entirely of stairs.

Re-imagining an observation tower, the $150 million structure rises to the height of 15-stories

and consists of 154 flights of stairs connecting some 80 viewing platforms.

When complete, the project, which was inspired by the ancient step wells of India,

promises to be a viewing tower like no other.

Other projects that didn't make our list, but are of course worthy of mention include,

the Bombay Sapphire Distillery in the UK, the redevelopment of an historic distillery for the famous gin maker.

Google Charleston East – a 595,000 square foot (or 55,000 square metre)

canopied campus for the tech giant in California.

And of course, the Olympic Cauldron – the centrepiece of London's 2012 Olympic Games.

Trump Releases Long-Delayed Cyber Order

The order was delayed so security and modernization programs can work in tandem, an official said.

President Donald Trump signed a long-delayed cybersecurity executive order today that mandates

federal agencies follow cybersecurity best practices and that top agency leaders be held

accountable for breaches.

The order is broadly similar to a draft circulated to industry and cyber experts several weeks

ago.

It was delayed, in part, to ensure efforts to modernize government technology are done

in tandem with cybersecurity efforts, White House Homeland Security Adviser Tom Bossert

said during a White House daily press briefing.

Trump specifically wanted to announce the formation of the American Technology Council,

which he�ll head personally and that will focus on modernizing government information

technology, before the cybersecurity order was released, Bossert said.

The order was also postponed until the president could release his budget wish list for the

fiscal year, Bossert said.

That budget includes funding hikes for cybersecurity components at the Justice Department and FBI

and for the Homeland Security Department, which is the government�s lead civilian

cyber agency.

The White House budget is only advisory and will likely be changed significantly as it

works its way through Congress.

The White House announced Trump would sign a cybersecurity executive order during his

first weeks in office, but that signing was abruptly canceled.

�We�ve sometimes been criticized for doing things too quickly and now we may be criticized

for doing things too slowly,� Bossert said, adding �maybe I�m right in the middle

of the sweet spot.�

Industry�s initial reaction to the order was muted with several companies and associations

saying they looked forward to reviewing it.

One key consideration for the order�s effectiveness will be the extent to which Trump follows

through on his promise to hold agency heads accountable for security lapses, John Bambenek,

threat intelligence manager for the cybersecurity firm Fidelis, told Nextgov.

�If you�re not going to face any real consequences, why would I spend time and money

on this?� Bambenek said.

�If the answer is the president can fire me while I�m addressing my employees and

they see the news of me being fired on the TV behind me, that�s kind of a motivator.�

In large companies, �although the CEO is not a cybersecurity expert, he or she is ultimately

responsible for implementing a cybersecurity plan that mitigates risk to the business,�

McAfee Chief Technology Officer Steve Grobman said.

Another key will be whether the president fills top cybersecurity management posts at

the White House, DHS and other agencies that will be responsible for assuring implementation

of many elements of the order, said Betsy Cooper, executive director of the Center for

Long-Term Cybersecurity at the University of California, Berkeley.

The order urges government agencies to share more IT infrastructure, such as financial

and human resources systems, which can save money as well as make cyber protections easier

to implement.

Shared services will be a major component of government IT modernization, White House

Cybersecurity Coordinator Rob Joyce has said.

The order also requires a series of reports to the White House on topics including cyber

protections for critical infrastructure, such as dams and energy plants, gaps in cyber protections

for the electrical grid and marketplace transparency in the cybersecurity industry.

Another report will focus on the �scope and sufficiency of efforts to educate and

train the American cybersecurity workforce of the future, including cybersecurity-related

education curricula, training and apprenticeship programs, from primary through higher education.�

Former White House Cybersecurity Coordinator Michael Daniel described the order as largely

in line with Obama administration cyber policy and as �more of a plan for a plan,� though

the reports it requires are �good ones to have.�

�In general, I don�t see anything unusual or that really goes in a different policy

direction,� Daniel said.

Often, a clear focus and consistency in assuming the reality of the wish fulfilled yields the

expected results.

But not everyone who commits themselves to spiritual practice will experience unequivocal
