An American living in Germany singing German Schlager music?

Yes, that's right!

Hey everyone! Dana here, and today I'm really excited to be joined by Sarah Jane Scott, an American

living here in Germany, singing German Schlager music.

So, Sarah Jane, where are you from and when did you move to Germany?

So, thanks very much, Dana for the invitation - Yes. You're welcome. - I am from Pennsylvania.

A very small town called Honesdale, Pennsylvania, and I was born there, grew up there, and

then I studied in Boston.

And I live since seven years in Germany, in Berlin. - Nice. Very nice.

Me too. So we both have our seven years here. - Yeah!

What is actually Schlager music?

What makes Schlager, Schlager, and are there different kinds of Schlager?

So, Schlager is very interesting. It's really a German thing.

When I lived in America, I never heard the word Schlager, let alone the music.

Schlager music is like a type of party music in Germany. There's different styles.

It's not only party but it's, like, it comes from the traditional side of music.

And then it's evolved like lots of music in America, like country music, for instance.

Um, so there's more, like, party Schlager, like dance, like Helene Fischer or Vanessa Mai.

And then there's also more traditional Schlager, "Volksmusik" from Marianne und Michael, um,

yeah so Schlager can mean a lot of different things, but nowadays Schlager is going into

a very modern, dance direction.

Typically in Germany everyone listens to Schlager when they're at the Oktoberfest, when they

go skiing, parties, birthday parties, weddings, or just going out, having a nice time with friends. - Yeah.

And what about you? What kind of Schlager do you sing?

So my Schlager is a little bit different.

So I am an American and so, because I grew up with American music and that is essentially

my music, my Schlager has a little bit of an American touch to it, I think the style

in which I sing is very American.

I think also there's a bit of a country influence in my Schlager. - Okay.

There's a little bit of pedal steel, banjo. I play the ukulele. Mine is not so much dance Schlager.

It's a little bit more, a little laid back.

So, you're an American.

But you sing in German, which I am so impressed by.

When did you actually start learning German?

So I started learning German in, oooh, well I came in 2010, and I sort of came about the

idea, maybe in 2011 I'll start learning German.

But it was, as you know, it's not easy. At all. - Yeah. - This language is so...

Beautiful language. - I love it. I actually do really like it. - I do too, but it's tricky. - Isn't it a great...? It's really hard.

The grammar is completely backwards from English.

And there's so many words in German for things that we don't have in America. - Yeah.

I tried taking a class, a German course, an intensive 3-week course, and then I was really

frustrated after the end of the three weeks because I learned practically nothing.

I don't really learn in that sort of way. - Okay.

So I thought, okay, well, how can I learn this language? I want to stay here.

Um, so I thought: Hey! I'm a musician.

I'm going to listen to German music. And then we'll see what happens.

And before I knew it, there was like a spark lit in me.

I heard German music and I was like, this is my thing.

I heard this word Schlager, and I Googled it. Hm, what's Schlager?

And, um, yeah, the rest is history.

I was just completely in love with it, and I started learning some German songs with

my ukulele. I didn't understand a word of what I was singing. - You're like, this is lovely. - Yeah.

I'm playing it. - But then slowly I started learning the language.

And, um, and then now I do it for a living. - Wow! - And I understand what I sing now. So. - Exactly.

Did you have, then, like, an "ah-ha" moment when you realized, like, I want to do this professionally?

I want to sing Schlager. - I did.

It was pretty much right in the beginning when I heard the word Schlager.

I heard the music from Helene Fischer and Andreas Gabalier.

These are two very famous Schlager singers, and then I heard more old German songs from

the 50s and the 60s; Connie Francis and Peggy March, these were two American women who sang

in German in the 50s and 60s.

I heard them sing in this language with an accent, and I thought: hm, I think I could also try

to do that. - Yeah! - That looks like fun.

I fell in love with Schlager music, and ever since 2011, it's been my passion and - Yeah.

it's fun for me because I can continue to learn.

So you mentioned your accent.

But, I mean, I know that I do not have the best ears for hearing accents, but still,

when I listen to your songs, I don't right away hear a strong American accent. I do not.

How did you work on that?

In the beginning, I thought: oh, I'm going to have the best accent, no one's ever going to

think that I'm an American. - So much optimism.

But, um, yeah, as an American you probably don't hear,

I actually do have quite a strong accent when I sing. - Okay.

But I think even stronger when I speak. - Okay.

Um, and I think my accent when I sing is not too strong, but it's just with the Rs.

It's very obvious that I'm American when someone hears me say a word with an R in it.

Lehrer. - Karriere. Erinnerungen. - Yes! Ich errinere mich. Ich errinere mich. - Yeah. Ich errinere mich. - Yeah.

I think, generally, I studied music as well, and so we sang lots of songs always in lots

of languages without understanding them.

And, um, yeah, I think it's much easier to sing...for instance, like, when someone sings

in English, you don't always hear an accent. - That's true.

You mentioned before when we talked on the phone that Schlager audiences can be a little

bit different. Can you elaborate on that?

Yeah, so, I love the Schlager audiences. They're so much fun. - Okay.

It's so...I've never experienced something like the Schlager audience in America.

And I also, I had, I played music in America as well.

When you go to a Schlager concert, the people want to have a good time. - Okay.

It's all about, like, just letting it all out, and enjoying life, and having fun.

And it's such a positive experience to be a part of that and to witness that.

It's a really nice thing to be a part of, yeah. - And do they sing along with the songs? - Always. - Okay.

Always. - Okay. And also, like, clapping along with the music, or? - Yes.

Germans love to clap. - Okay. - They love, with the music. Much more than Americans. - Yeah.

Like anything that has a steady beat. - They will clap. - Germans, oh yeah. You can count on it all the time.

And it's, they're like, it's a...they're a part of it.

They want to experience it, and it's just a really fun, happy time. I love it. - Okay.

You've mentioned now a few Schlager singers.

But do you have personally any Schlager singers that you really love listening to?

Yes, I love listening to modern Schlager and also old Schlager.

There's so many good things, for instance you can't mention Schlager

without mentioning Helene Fischer. She's amazing.

I love Andreas Gabalier. Um, he's from Austria. He wears Lederhosen.

Do you find Lederhosen as charming as I do? - I love Lederhosen.

Mr. German Man has a very dashing pair. I love them. - I'm charmed by him.

He has this Elvis thing going on. Like he... - Elvis in Lederhosen. I like that.

Yeah, like this American, he has an American, also has an American touch to his music.

Um, I really like him.

I also really like classic Schlager from Udo Jürgens.

Um, I love Peggy March and Connie Francis. I love Klubbb3.

Yeah, but there's always, like all music genres, there's always cool stuff,

new...new cool stuff coming out. - Okay.

And what about you? What is your latest album?

What other projects are you working on now?

So, I just had a new album come out.

It's called "So Viel," which means "So Much." - Yeah.

And my first single as been out for a few weeks.

I have second single coming out in a couple of weeks from now.

And, um, I have some shows.

I'm always playing lots of shows all over Germany,

sometimes Austria and Switzerland as well.

Um, I also have some TV shows. Everything is on my website.

Which I will link to everything.

You can find everything down in the description box below for sure. - But I think next week

I have a show in Himmelstadt. Yeah. - Oh, okay! I don't know where that is,

but that sounds like a lovely place.

Yeah, Himmelstadt. - Like "Himmel," either heaven or sky. - Heaven...Heaven City. - Yeah.

Yeah. We'll think heaven. - Yeah, we'll go with heaven. - I don't know.

Sky City. Well, Sky City is also good. - Sky city is also not bad. - Yeah.

So our question for you is: what is your favorite genre of music?

And have you ever been to a Schlager party?

Please let us know in the comments below.

Thank you so much, Sarah Jane, for being here with me today and answering my questions.

Thank you, thank you, thank you.

And of course thank you so much for watching.

I really hope that you enjoyed this video.

You can find all of the links to Sarah Jane down in the description box below, Facebook

and YouTube, and her website.

All down there.

Thank you again so much for watching. And until next time, auf Wiedersehen!

Yes! We got it. Okay. - Two American girls saying auf Wiedersehen. - Yeah. It's perfect! - Love it.

And what album...no. Okay.

You've mentioned a few other...

That's what I meant to say.

Saying the U with the umlaut. Do you still struggle with the U with the umlaut?

That's not a problem for me. - No, okay.

It's the R. - It's the R. - It's just, I will never get this R.

I'll often just forget the verb.

I'll get to the end of the sentence and then Stefan, Mr. German Man, will be like:

Verb. A verb would be good. Like, any verb. Just pick one. Oh, right. Sein.

Essence of Murli 05-10-2017 - Duration: 6:32.

Om Shanti !

Today's Murli Date Is 5th October 2017

( In India today festival 'Khojagiri Poornima' is celebrated. Tonight milk and eatables are cooked under full moon night as its considered auspicious )

Essence: Sweet children, the Bharat that was very wealthy has now become poor.

Only the Father makes this poor Bharat wealthy once again.

Question: Who are the most fortunate of you gopes and gopis and how?

Answer: The most fortunate are those who perform the Godly dance of knowledge.

( Their stage is very high while listening to knowledge )

They are the ones who will go to the golden age and dance with the princes and princesses.

Such fortunate children surrender themselves to the Father completely at this time and say:

Baba, I belong to You. Nothing is mine.

You make me into a master of heaven and so why would I not surrender myself to You?

Essence for dharna: 1. Always maintain the intoxication that you are becoming the masters of Brahmand and of the world.

You Brahmins will then become deities.

2. Make your stage strong. Don't even be afraid of death.

Stay in remembrance of the Father. Imbibe this knowledge and serve others.

Blessing: May you be a charitable soul who transforms sorrow into happiness and defamation into praise.

A charitable soul is one who never causes sorrow for anyone nor accepts sorrow from anyone,

but accepts sorrow in the form of happiness instead.

When someone considers defamation to be praise, that one is called a charitable soul.

Always make this lesson firm:

See any soul who insults you or causes you sorrow with your merciful form and your look of mercy, not with a look of defamation.

That one may insult you, but if you shower that one with flowers, you would then be called a charitable soul.

Slogan: Those who merge BapDada in their eyes are the lights of the world; elevated souls who grant visions of BapDada.

To the sweetest, beloved, long-lost and now-found children, love, remembrance and good morning from the Mother, the Father, BapDada.

The spiritual Father says namaste to the spiritual children.

We spiritual children convey to spiritual Baapdada, our love our remembrance, our good morning & our namaste namaste

Om Shanti !

Breast Cancer Stop and Think Before You Pink! - Duration: 6:02.

Breast Cancer: Stop and Think Before You Pink!

Every October we get a nationwide wave of pink ribbon breast cancer awareness products.

Even after October it's pretty difficult to avoid getting the widespread pink ribbon marketing

culture 'in our faces...'

The marketing with all those trinkets and status symbol associations has overshadowed

the vitally important work needed to address putting an end to the deadly disease.

In spite of vast amounts of cash raised from kind well-meaning fundraisers/donators breast

cancer continues to be a major health crisis: Corporations make millions from the disease

while not anywhere near enough progress has been made in treatment, prevention and reversal.

The figures speak for themselves.

Taking the USA as an example, currently some 3 million women have breast cancer.

Up to 33% will metastasise (spread to other parts of the body)... and annually some 40,000

women will die in spite of over 20 years of pink ribbon awareness.

My message for everyone is to think before you pink: I encourage everyone to stop the

distraction and focus on the matter at hand, find solutions to put an end to breast cancer.

There are 6 ways in which the pink ribbon culture distracts, preventing real significant

progress.

1.

It promotes an 'empty awareness'

There are 2 types of awareness.

One is an awareness that leads to making a difference.

The other is an 'empty awareness' which makes no difference because it doesn't lead to taking

action and getting significant results.

This is what's happening in the case of pink ribbon marketing and its products.

Everyone has been made aware about breast cancer but ultimately nothing has significantly

changed in stopping women from getting the disease because mere awareness is not enough

to achieve the end goal.

2.

Pink ribbon spreads misinformation

Pink ribbon marketing may be promoting disinformation by spreading a major misunderstanding that

early detection saves lives.

The only real fact that can be said for certain about early detection is that it detects different

cancers.

Nobody knows at this early stage whether or not the cancer will turn out to be malignant

or benign.

Another case where pink ribbon campaigns don't tell the whole truth is the '5 year cure rate.'

If the cancer doesn't return 5 years after treatment the person is signed off as 'cured.'

However, the cancer may return... but this is not mentioned allowing the stats to be

fiddled.

Both the early detection myth and the stats fiddle allows pink ribbon to manipulate the

customer through fear and false undertakings so that more pink ribbon products can be sold.

3.

Corporations manipulate people's emotions; spread fear and give false hope, while exploiting

goodwill and concern

This is done by the corporations to make more money from products sales.

At the end of the day the corporations benefit from breast cancer far more than the women

they help who are at risk.

There is much opaqueness and a lack of accountability from corporations regarding fundraising and

marketing promotion.

4.

Sometimes corporations advertise the pink ribbon on a product that contributes to breast

cancer

For example, the pink ribbon has been known to be seen on plastic bottled water.

The plastic leeches out a chemical carcinogen know as bisphenol A (BPA).

This is a hypocritical and darkly deceptive piece of marketing.

They make the statement 'we care' about ending breast cancer only to sell a product that

can contribute to it while used to earn customer loyalty.

5.

Pink ribbon culture promotes products that can sexualize and degrade women

This can be done by depicting women as nothing more than sex-objects by focussing on the

breasts, ignoring the many other diverse aspects that deserve respect in a woman.

During the breast cancer campaigns this includes using degrading slogans such as "save the

boobies" and "save the ta-tas..." with the fitting accompanying images.

6.

Pink ribbon covers up what really goes on when fighting breast cancer

They may give out rare success stories where superficiality is used with carefully chosen

pictures showing how a woman 'fought hard' to beat breast cancer...

The idea behind this is to promote the image of fighting breast cancer in a palatable way,

which makes it more profitable.

Indeed, this covers up the truth; the harsh reality that fighting breast cancer involves

devastation and it is not pretty.

In conclusion

As I stated earlier my message for everyone is to think before you pink: To encourage

everyone to stop the distraction and be it through grassroots activism; making corporations

accountable... lobbying your MP... etc...

Or educating your family and friends... do this to focus on finding the solutions related

to putting an end to breast cancer.

This piece was inspired by Breast Cancer Actions Think Before you Pink campaign.

I highly recommend you get involved with Breast Cancer Action who are making a difference.

HE WOULDN'T WAKE UP - Story Time | LesleyyX1 - Duration: 11:46.

shout-out to my best friend and even though this is your story I'm gonna tell

it so I can make money off of your pain

hey guys welcome back to my channel and this story time video is going to be a

little bit dramatic but I'm gonna tell it and I might get a

little emotional so what's new let me start all the way back to my sophomore

year and that is when I met I think I'm gonna just call him Bobby

cuz Bobby is just one of those names so my sophomore year of college I met this

boy named Bobby and I didn't know him my freshman year because he was studying

abroad and because of that he missed out on rooming in a wet dorm that was for

upperclassmen so he ended up being pulled in by this guy who we met from

the school newspaper who was my friend and so we were actually neighbors on the

same floor sharing the same wall and I did not know anything about Bobby but at

one point in another I had to meet him and I remember him being really nice he

was pretty easy to talk to so you know I knew a part of me was always like friend

friend let's be friends but honestly he was so down because every interaction we

had was either really funny or just really easy or I feel like we just just

clicked you know we had we were just always on the same level so he and I

became best friends and by that I mean in separable everybody who you know in

the friend group when they would think about me I'd be associated with him and

vice versa anybody on the outside of the front group probably thought we were

dating or you know just like doing this with our hands together

so it was you know I don't know how to explain it because I've never been

genuinely friends with a boy before it's either you know there's an undertone to

it where you know what among us has a crush on me yet on one another or you

know someone's so friend-zoned but the other ones like no I went out in the

friend zone and I feel like that's usually more man who gets frightened and

you know sometimes it's like oh you know you're so nice to me because you want to

get in my pants no this guy was really really nice he's a nice guy

we were pretty alike in a lot of ways however there was one way that we were

not alike he was a little bit more experimental when it came to drugs and I

don't mean Mead we did not cut it for him

he liked the fun drugs and me I was such a goody two-shoes I didn't really dabble

too much in anything but I'll tell you I was always so nervous that hardcore

drugs were going to mix with my medication drugs and then I was going to

just die on the spot like come on my luck right so I was so scared of that

but he did hit up his own little thing and he liked also drinking which is fine

because I love drinking but he liked drinking and drugs so he decides to go

to an EDM concert and I think I have this story right but if I don't that's

okay because now that I'm telling it to YouTube it's fact so let me just tell

you how the story went he I think it was he drank a lot at the concert became

drunk and since he was already naturally open to drugs his drunken self was open

to take Molly so he took Molly and apparently had some

weird side effects to it why how about that I mean Molly is just one of those

drugs that the king action of other drugs apparently he was

you know the bouncers kept trying to pull him away but he was going up to the

stage and just banging on and just being a real nuisance being real cray-cray but

you know of course I had a cray-cray friend so he goes with his best guy

friend and I guess it's a crazy time but then he becomes a lifeless body and he

is a lot bigger than his friend his friend is exactly my height my build we

have the same type of arms whoa so he becomes a lifeless body and so

it's like role-playing here do you remember when Mufasa dies and baby Simba

is trying to move Mufasa as lifeless body I'm pretty sure that's how it

looked so he takes Bobbie tosses him in the uber cuz it's what you do with your

friends and then he drags them back out and he's just probably crawling around

campus and the security guard sees them and like this is a trashy party school

I've seen a lot of things but this don't look right you need to send him to the

ER so me I get a text I don't know who's from maybe his friend that Bobby's in

the ER and I don't hear much else but I'm assuming he over drank then became

dehydrated so he's getting fluids because your mind can never really you

know you can't really think of the worst possible thing so he's just like okay

that's it and I was feeling so low and they and

needy I wanted to hang out with Bobby and pause right here you're probably not

wondering did Bobby and I ever kiss yes numerous times different occasions

back to the story so I was like I need Bobby not sexually but I needed him so I

figured I was going to go to bed sleep the night away and I was gonna wake up

and then Bobby was gonna be there I woke up Bobby wasn't there so then I started

getting concerned and I'm thinking how do I distract myself now shy nap should

I come up with stupid activities I can't do homework I already can't do homework

because I'm a procrastinator but I couldn't do homework I don't know what

time what to think and I wasn't getting many details and I don't have his

family's number to text up his dad so I'm just waiting there and waiting

they're waiting there well let me tell you what happened

so the Molly he took was laced with meth what what how about that

how about that it was laced with meth and it caused both his lungs to collapse

thank God I didn't find this out while I was in my dorm room because I probably

would have just passed out and had to be watched over by the Wellness Center

because I didn't know any of this was happening and so they called his family

apparently and they said this is the time when you should have a priest in

half get your Reverend say here final good-byes because he's walking a fine

line tonight we don't know if he's gonna make it

what so this point x is his little both his lungs are collapsed he's like a to

breathing for him down there no idea well thankfully he started breathing on

his own and then he was fine I mean granted you almost died so his throat

was hoarse and sore I don't know if it was hoarse but his throat was sore

because he had a tube down it and and just your lungs and he felt tired

and kind of weird but I guess that's how it feels when you almost die I'm

probably a terrible human being that I'm making light of this conversation but we

cool now we're cool so I go in and I see him and I can't remember my reaction but

it did shake me up I remember because this was Bobby and I just I didn't want

Bobby doing this again I couldn't handle Bobby doing this again I couldn't what

if something happened to Bobby I don't even know what I would do because Bobby

was like the next best thing to my brother and I would not have been able

to handle that whatsoever and then I would say after that things kind of

changed and I felt like because he had a near-death experience that he learned

what was really important to him and Bobby didn't really hang out with me as

much he hung out with another friend group and I remember I really took it

personal and I was kind of wondering why do I have this attachment to Bobby and

now I know I talked about how my brother had passed away but Bobby didn't act

like my brother whatsoever he didn't have any mannerisms or his personality

it just wasn't like my brother at all so yes I think there was an attachment that

I needed to attach to because I was ripped away with my brother but then I

started wondering am I in love with my best friend all of my funny stories

always get serious and sad at the end but I figured you guys kind of want to
