Usually I buy kiln dried lumber, but sometimes I have to dry some local woods
I got an infrared dryer for wood Flexyheat
Here is it. Small dryer: only six infrared heating panel
There is one more box. I think it contains electrical cables, control panel, etc.
Yes, the cables and electrical shield
This is so called "thermoactive cassette" - infrared heating panel
The heating temperature is about 65-70 degrees
First of all I have to make the base of the dryer. It will be 1.5 meters long
The bottom of the base must be insulated. I will use Penoplex - extruded polystyrene
Next I have to make top cover
We find the place outdoor behind the workshop
This is top cover. The roof will be isolated, the walls will be covered with the sheet metal
The same Penoplex plus isolon with a reflective layer
The roof is ready
I bought birch burl and I am going to dry it
The dryer is heavy. So we made the door to put the lumber inside
Open the door door, put the lumber into the dryer and turn it on
The moisture content is very high. I think about 100%.
I can't measure it, because my moisture meter can measure only up to 45%
It tried to show 98% and then showed empty screen
Electric shield was hanged on the wall, cables were inserted through the bottom
The layer of insulation, then row of heaters
White control cassette on the left, red one on the right
Then the row of lumber, the bars and the second row of lumber
All cables are numbered - 1, 2, 3.
The amount of lumber is small. So we decided to put only one row of wood between the heaters
We do this for the first time and have no experience
It is time to turn on the dryer
Check the heat
We got a chance to use a thermal imager
We close the door and fix it with the screws
Today is the 6th of September. What time do we need to get 6-8% lumber?
Next morning. Water flows
The roof is cold, but the walls are warn. I think 30-35 degree
Steam condenses on cold walls and water drains down
September 9. Three days passed
I will open the door
The walls are wet
The ceiling is dry
The wood became lighter. I will try to measure the moisture content
Unfortunately the moisture content is still more than 45%
I am going to wait a week
I measured another piece of wood, not the burl
It is about 22%. I guess the burl is more dense and wet
Three more days passed. Wood becomes lighter and lighter
Unfortunately the wood cracked
I had a talk with the producer and was recommended to place the lumber in other order
The moisture content now is about 21-23%
I don't like these cracks
I got the following recommendations: to put the row of lumber under the first row of heaters,
insert additional bars in order to increase the distance between the lumber and the heaters
the last row should be the heaters, not the lumber
Today is September 17. Twelve day passed.
There is no water on the walls
The control sample should be taken from the middle of the wooden stack
I bought better moister meter. It is more accurate, measures from 4 to 100%, has temperature correction
The moisture content of this sample is 5.3%
The closer view
I think this is enough
I stop the drying process
I bought 1/2 cubic meter of pine and will dry it according the recommendations of the producer
I dried it in the open air during a week.
The upper board is 21%
In the middle of the stack - 43-44%
The producer recommends: a row of lumber, a row of heaters, then two rows of lumber, a row of heaters and so on
The stack of wood according recommendations
The bars above the heaters must be 30 mm thick, between the lumber rows - 20 mm thick
The dryer was made for 1/2 cubic meter of lumber
In the morning after 12 hours. You can see the water under the dryer.
Five days passed
The water still flows
I want to check the moisture content
The walls are wet, this means that the process is not finished
The initial moisture content was about 40%
One more test
I will wait 5-7 days
After three day I decided to finish
Another board
This is enough, because I need this lumber for outdoor projects
The deformations are small, no end grain cracks
I thick this method of drying is good for small workshops
I want dry birch burl additional time
I made smaller pieces - the blanks of knife handles
I am going to dry these blanks one more week
I want to stabilize these blanks, so I need almost 0% content
By the way there was a heavy rain some day ago and short circuit happened
So I made an additional roof above the electric shield
