What's Good..
It's Fevir.
It looks like I might be taking another look at Crowfall this weekend; Summoners War hints
at an MMORPG release; Tree of Saviour gets a massive update; and my thirst for turn based
strategy games is getting quenched; All that and more coming up...
So let's start strong.. with Crowfall.
Since it's successful crowd funding campaign it's been in and out of the news constantly
as new builds and information get pushed out.. and I have spent time playing the game although
I haven't spoken too much about it.. as most of you know my stance on games during crowdfunding..
and as you would expect it was rather rough around many of the edges and so I've opted
to both wait to talk about it and wait to spend more time in it.. until more updates
came out.. and it looks like that time is now with some huge changes being rolled out
that will be active in this next weekend's play test.
First.. a major graphical overhaul- the Crowfall guys worked with the Unity Spotlight Team
to really step up the appearance of the game.. and if you look at the before.. and the after
it really is a drastic difference.. now granted.. this is a trailer.. and even if it's in engine..
it is cherry picked footage.. but this alone; would have got me back in the game this weekend
to really see how representative the trailer is.
..but the changes kept coming with a change to the rigid archetype class system.. to a
more flexible, familiar system.
The easiest way to break that down if you weren't following the game.. is that the classes
and races were locked to each other previously.. but they have opened it up.. so you can choose
your class and have an assortment of lore appropriate races that can use that class..
this is really interesting for crowfall because they have some non-trivial racial abilities
that should make certain options pretty rad.. and the idea of a minotaur shooting a bow
or a half giant being a cleric adds some much needed diversity.
And then.. the smallest, but still pretty large update is the inclusion, of what they
call Disciplines- Which allow you to further specialize or differentiate yourself from
others who may share your same race-class combo... currently there are 100 different
disciplines spread out over 3 types.
And each character has a limit to how many of each type they can equip.
Starting with 1 weapon specialization.. which allows you to really hone in on a type of
weapon- granting both bonuses and abilities.
You can use 2 major disciplines.. these really feel like the sub-class options.. you could
opt to add the Field Surgeon Displine- which increases your healing and gives you access
to a number of healing abilities- or the Bard Discipline which grants you a number of group
wide song buffs... both of these are available to anyone but there are even disciplines restricted
to certain classes like the Shield Fighter Disciple that gives.. what you can imagine..
more offensive based shield abilities.
So with this.. you could play a support based assassin.. who sings and heals.. or a cleric
who can heal.. but really just wants to throw down and live the captain america fantasy
And finally the Minor disciplines, of which you can use 3, which feel a lot more like
traditional MMORPG talents.. which range from smaller.. flavor type bonuses.. like being
crit immune while at low HP.. or increased health regen when stealthed.. or even active
abilities like Stone Skin.. which when used cures poison.
The modular nature of
this type of system.. not only is rad as fuck from a customization standpoint.. but is incredible
easy to add on to.. and the combinations.. are endless really.. more than half of what
your character can do.. you've chosen - and - these disciplines exist as in game items..
runestones that you equip.. so you can change them, try them, experiement.. although they
won't allow free swapping.. you're overriding past disciplines.. which adds another gold
sink.. and another thing to craft... needless to say- I'm going to spend some time this
weekend.. for sure.. and this Thursday the Crowfall team takes to twitch to go over it
all live.
Next we have.. the mobile game that could.
Summoners War.. has some big news.
You may have heard me mention this game before.. this is a freemium mobile game.. you control
teams of monsters that you've raised and augmented and pulled through a gacha, loot box type
system.. and can fight different assortments of PvE challenges as well as other players..
and over the last 3 years this title.. has grown, and grown, and grown and grown.
With conservative expectations of passing the 1 BILLION US Dollars earned.. as of next
month, June.
This game.. is a power house.
Com2Us after taking people through their Q1 results.. have also teased future plans..
as they ride their momentum through the mobile space and are underway to not only push ahead
in eSports and merchandising.. but also Film and TV media while still providing updates-
if you're familiar with the game.. plushies or a cartoon of them would sell themselves..
and with the push into eSports we'll see them partner up come June 24th with Amazon and
Twitch for the Summoners War US tournament.. but for me.. what caught my eye.. is that
apparently in early 2018- there is a scheduled mobile MMORPG based on the Summoners War universe..
now typically a lot of mobile air quote' mmorpgs.. amount to games that play exactly like Summoners
War.. or other gacha style games..
I doubt they are going to release something in direct competition to themselves.. so we
might be seeing a much more fleshed out game... and they have the money.. and for the same
reasons I am excited about Albion Online.. offering a good mobile MMORPG.. consider my
interest peaked.. especially since I actively play Summoners War now.
Some might be bummed out about yet another mobile announcement.. but there is no denying
that mobile money.. and I don't want to dwell in this next piece of news... but according
to sources speaking to the Wall Street Journal..
Nintendo seems to be suggesting that both Zelda and also Animal Crossing are IPs heading
to the mobile.. which makes sense after both Super Mario Run and Fire Emblem Heroes have
been released and accepted.. this was inevitable.. still in the air is the type of game..
Nintendo has said they prefer the Super Mario Run model.. but also were dissapointed with
the revenue from it.. it's just hard to compete with freemium games.. but if I had to guess..
I can imagine us pulling Links iconic weapons from loot bags very soon.
On top of this..
NBC Universal is also looking at mobile games... and leveraging it's catalogue as they move
to create a new mobile and virtual reality publishing group.. so think IPs like Minions..
or Jurassic World or even Fast and the Furious being subjected to the mobilization treatment.
NBC Universal has stated an initial focus on mobile games.. but that VR tag is still
relevant and they'll have an interesting announcement soon.
Tree of Saviour.
I was really rooting for this game.
It scratched an itch I still have as an old school Ragnarok Online player.. and someone
who still appreciates a good old grind fest.. but it didn't do too well.
Exploits, connection issues, balance concerns... it's been a rocky road and with a massive
update live today, the 16th..
I think they are looking to rebrand themselves a bit.
Coupled with a newly designed website.. this patch brings a shit ton of changes- which
look to mainly be directed not even at balance.. but on the damage calculations.
There is a streamlining of attributes and what they do, equipment balancing.. changes
to item upgrading..
I think I read close to receiving almost double the experience on the way to level 100.. new
hunting grounds and larger potions... as well as running a bunch of different welcome back
events which is basically.. just free stuff for the players.
So it might be worth it to check it out.. or the massive patch notes to see if something
that turned you away has gotten fixed.. for me..
I couldn't play the game for like 3 weeks on release just due to horrible lag, de-sync,
disconnection errors.. and I'll wait a bit to see if that get cleaned up.. if you are
heading back in..
I'd appreciate a comment down below either way about if some of the connection issues
have been fixed.
There are different type of people.
Those who recognize Final Fantasy Tactics as the best grid based strategy RPG.. and
people who are wrong.
Although even if you don't agree with me..
I guess if your favourite was Front Mission.. your still good.
This leads me down the rabithole of playing games that say they were inspired by FFT..
almost on principal alone.
Enter- Deck and Dice's Tactical RPG- Children of Zodiarcs- This was a kickstarter game that
recieved 5 times it's ask in funding.. and with the Square Enix Collective name slapped
on it..
I'm cautiously optimistic.
Releasing on July 18th on both the PC and PS4 this seems to be a grid based game that
infuses the deck building and card trend into an all but familiar turn based combat setting.
The aesthetic of the game isn't too bad.. and there is excitement around the game..
although.. if you were the Front Mission type.. you're probably more interested in BATTLETECH..
another turn based strategy game.. but with mechs.. and as their release starts coming
closer and closer.. a huge amount of impressive looking game footage has been dropped and
the anticipation of their multipayer demo is on the horizon.. and if you need another
reason besides giant mech combat..
Paradox is going to be the publisher.
That's going to go ahead and do it for me.
Expect some Crowfall.. and take it easy.
