Eumm....My name is ...(in French)
Hiro Mashima
Hello (in French)
Thank you all
I think it's an exhibition that is a little different from the one I've done so far
Because it presents the world of FT to people who don't necessarily know FT's universe
And I'm very happy with what has been done
I had the right to a very warm welcome, so I'm very happy ...thank you
Honestly, I was pretty stressed yesterday morning...
You have a minister who is very elegant (charismatic) that's good...
And she showed a real interest for Japan, and I was very happy
(Here Mashima opening a box: it's actually the cat mascot of the Angouleme Festival )
This is the prize I received yesterday
Thank you, Than you very much (in French)
Animator : Hiro Mashima received an award yesterday, the "Wildcat of honor"
And here is his price, we can applaud him for that
I'm very very happy thanks!
The problem at the beginning of FT was that I had a group of friends
And we liked to party, and I wanted to reproduce that in my manga
There are lots of people obviously who are inspired by my best friends
And Gray it's me, I want to make it clear (lol)
No I'm kidding, I'm kidding
I'm rather close to Ichiya...
It's true ! it's quite me
Animator: But Mashima is very beautiful, that's right!
Ichiya is a very beautiful person too, I want to say it
I have been very like of the European's buildings design for a long time,
And I knew that in this manga, as much as possible,
I would put things that I could see and that inspired me in European design
In the manga, the city of Magnolia is in my mind, in any case, is associated with the city of Paris
Me: (Btw for those who don't know, Kardia Cathedral is inspired by "Notre Dame de Paris")
I was inspired by pictures that I had, so I drew while looking at the photos, while taking care, ofc, not to reproduce exactly the same thing of what I had on the photos,
to arrange a little to my way the buildings, but not only Paris, also buildings of other cities by if by there...
I don't remember exactly the name of the cities but, I have the memory that I had seen a lot of pictures of the south of France for example
The story started in a context where Natsu and characters were moving in a context quite close to reality
And so I wanted to get away from it and do something that was much further away from this reality
It looks.... really crazy...can be seen like that...
But I really thought about every part of the city with graphic concept,
That is to say rather a part with rounded, another rather on aspects triangular, or else another rectangular
there was actually a reflection and a wish to visually express something
I didn't see her as a character in its own right, but as I love drawing the scenes of nature, there I feasted yes..
The Middle Ages, in the real era in Europe, is a very hectic time that knew a lot of war, a lot of conflict,
I wanted to keep the image of that time but in a context a little more pacified and a little less agitated
That is... in a way... the Middle Ages as popularly perceived by the Japanese
So I think I'm a little removed from the basic meaning of the guild as we know it,
but for me I saw it as a kind of family, a team, for me that's what it means that I wanted to means in the word "guild"
Basically, it's the perception of a gamer
Until now in any case, before I start FT, in a lot of teenage manga (so shonnen)
We often saw a representation of a plan where the hero had some friends and he was fighting against very strong enemies
And the very strong enemies are became these friends and have integrated his band
And suddenly I said to myself I tried to propose something different,
Not to start only with 2 people with a group who grows, but to have an existing group from the start
Yes exactly
Animator: who are full of foolery, that breaks full of things...
(Me : Mashima's laugh is so cute XD)
No no, we break nothing...
Well... I recognize that sometimes we get undressed...
Animator: Do you imply that you are going to undress right now?
No, no! for now I'm keeping my clothes ^^
Initially , obviously I like magic, so it's a concept that interested me,
there was also other story in which there were magicians,
but a guild composed of mage, it seems to me that in manga world, it did not exist and it interested me precisely to proposed that
There are many who look alike
It's true that I took a real pleasure in imagining all these spells and all these different magies
But more the serie lasted more I had trouble finding a new idea and new fate, so good I improvised a little
Then it was an ax, but an ax a little different from the one I had put some while earlier I made small variants but it was not big news anymore
Indeed, it's close to what we can find in video games, that is to say,
More we use, more we consume magic that is not necessarily renewed when we uses it
There was no precise figure of the magic that the characters could use,
But if the character used his magic all the day, it's sure, that at the end of the day, he had no more magic ,
Basically is that...
I'm going to ask him,
I think he would have wings and he would start to fly
Originally I made a short story, a one shot, called "fairy TALE" (and not fairy TAIL)
In which appeared a character who used an ax, and I think it's from this character that Natsu is really born
Yes, yes the personality looks like him
I think, (it should not be misunderstood) Natsu is the one I was when I was a teenager
The one I was btw 5 and 10 years old, the child a little agitated, is probably the one who looks the most like Natsu
Animator: I can imagine you ...
This is probably the period when I thought it was the most true
Animator: and again now?
Now, by dint of answer to my friends "sorry I'm too busy, I cannot come" well...
there are more people who invite me so Idk too much...
(Me: Idk why but I found this answer a little sad ...)
Yes it's very important, for sure, if a character that lacks strength of character, personality,
The readers will not retain him, so it's obviously very important,
I was looking for a form of balance, of harmony, compared to the existing characters, so at the beginning,
I had Lucy, Natsu, Happy, and have added to them a friends group, so that it stays balanced and harmonious
You're far from that, there are at least 200 ...
I always walk with my sketchbook, so I always sketches here and there from as soon as I have a moment,
And among the sketches that I do, when I start to add a bubble or text to the character,
That's the sign that I hold a character
Yes that's it, it often happens after that it becomes a manga character
If we take my old sketchbook, we will see perhaps a 40-year-old man who is there to do: MEEENNNNN
I think we'll find that yes
Yes, yes... I think it's an idea that I fully validate, since there is different guild, and that each guild to its personality in some way
It's by looking in the real world of Japan, and in "environments", we will say, "Mafia",
Sometimes, which I inspired myself to create these guilds
"Mafia" or "Godfather", if you preferred
On the kind of manga in itself (shonen) it's not absolutely essential
But it's true that even if in history, the characters don't clash,
It's even more interesting if we create a character somehow the opposite of the oposed heroes
It's up to the character to evolve in a clear and specific way
And when we set objectives for these heroes, for these characters, from the point of view of the reader,
It's easier to imagine what are the goals that heros must reach
It will depend on mangas, stories, ofc ...
It happens that it's decided from the start, and it happens that we integrate it in short course
For FT, I had planned nothing from this point of view at first,
And it's progressively in the story that the rival characters, enemies appeared, and took of the importance
Not at all,
In volume 3, for the first time when Zeref appears , I had not imagined him as one of the future great rivals of characters
Animator : So, we can say that these characters became alive (once again, don't ask me what he wants to mean by this question lol )
As long as the series continues it naturally becomes like that
The dragon is a representation that we have in a lot of Japanese media, whether in video games , in mangas, it's not something new,
These are things we are used to, we Japanese
But in all that I could read or see, in all the works where there were dragons,
I didn't have the impression that the dragons were animals... very strong... very powerful, and very very important,
And therefore, I thought : "if I do it this way, if I represent the dragon in this form, it will be original, it will be new"
Well... I would like to think that yes, I would have thought that I have a dragon in me
Maybe it would be a dragon spitting ink,
And who in addition would use this ink, to draw in my place
And from his nose would come out of the white smoke, which would erase the places where I was wrong,
Would be nice if I had a dragon like that
The simplest to explain is : Lucy, it's the candid (ingenuous), she's the character who represents what the reader sees,
And as I told you at the beginning, in FT's story, there is already a good team of character,
And it was necessary to have a character who is the representative of the readers when the story moves in a world that nobody has seen,
it was necessary that there is a character who precisely puts himself in this position to have never seen what he discovered
And when we evolve in the shonen manga, it's a character that is very important,
Ofc, it's also the fact that the physical aspect is also important, to entertain the reader,
About Gray, he has the role of the rival against Natsu,
The only small miscalculation I made which was not planned in my plans, is that Gray is so successful with female readers XD
Especially, when I had imagined Gray, I didn't see him as the character "beautiful guy" on the serie liked to everyone,
But rather the character a little silly who gets undressed at any occasion
And so, when I realized that he had some success with girls and that the number of readers increased more and more I went in their direction
Animator : He should be put even more often naked then,
If there is an opportunity to do that again, yes, ofc
Erza is the character who served to advance the story because, initially, the characters had no purpose/goal to move forward,
And it's with erza that allowed to establish goal to new characters
And indeed, in the reality, it's true that the place of women in society, for more than 10 years, evolved
The women have taken a real importance in modern societies
I thought would be interesting, to have in the circle of the hero, a female character, sufficiently charismatic to just worried the hero himself
For Happy, it's simple, I like cats
This is a character that I had imagined working in « true duo » with Natsu,
The "alchemy" btw the two created something interesting, that's what I was looking for with the character of Happy
And from a personal point of view, the fact of drawing this triangular relationship btw Natsu, Lucy, Happy, their exchange,
the humor that they could bring was something that…, a mangaka like me, took a lot of pleasure to do.
Animator : Ok, you're fine everybody?
Mashima: Is everything ok for you?
Wendy's character, the idea came to me from wanting to see a little girl who seemed weak in appearance,
But who was fighting hard enough, and that, I was interested in staging her
Wendy is the little sister of the group in a way... that's what role I wanted to give her in the manga,
And the fact that readers who have the same age group can identify with her
Mirajane, would be the little ray of sunshine in a rogue guild, someway…
Animator: But on the other hand, Mirajane she scares them anyway
yeah yeah… I admit it, I had thought that of the start…
JUVIAAAAA <3 <3 (fangirl Nina mode actived XD it's not me who screaming)
Then, Juvia is a character who developed for me unexpectedly, I didn't think she would take such this importance
I originally thought of her as just a character (in the Phantom arc) like the others,
But the moment where we see her, the face to face with Gray, see her like this... I said to myself :" I didn't imagine we would go so far "
(he understood how much she had potential)
I had conceived her as a rather cold character, rather impassive, who didn't let herself be impressed,
And from the moment she met Gray, I said to myself:
"Oh, it would be funny to have a real change of personality, from that moment and show the weaknesses of this character"
Animator: And it's true that Juvia is a character we really see evolved from beginning to end,she has a real importance ...
Yes indeed, Juvia is one of the characters that really has a strong popularity rating, regardless of the country where I go
Animator : Besides there is Juvia in the room... I saw people in cosplay...
A : "can we turn on the light please?"
A : "the people in cosplay, you can stand up?"
M: it suits you very well, bravo!
Animator : What do you feel each time seeing your characters come to life through cosplay?
It makes me really happy
But, I also have a feeling of guilt when I sometimes see the "naked aspect" that some cosplays may have,
I have a feeling guilt to them to have created this type of character
I promise, in my next manga, I would be more careful
Animator: you will be careful, that is, you will strip them more?
No no I cannot do more otherwise I would be in trouble
I might be asked to return the price
No, ofc
I think we wouldn't know how to react(what to do) in my opinion if they were all like that
Yes ofc, the fact that a character is more or less popular, will influence my way of reflect to history... yeah
There are two types of popularity concept :
- The survey in magazines of publications, for which we organized a real survey of the readers by asking them
which is their favorite character and according to the answers which we obtained, we have precisely the ranking of popular characters
- The other type: we don't make an official vote but we have through the messages or letters sent to us,
a more or less precise idea, of the characters's popularity,
For FT, it's especially in relation to the drawing that we receive the editorial direction of the magazine... letters, drawings, messages that are sent,
we have a more or less precise vision of the popularity characters,
We can take Mavis for example, a character who was in my mind, to be only in Tenrou arc, and finally at the end of the arc, when I wanted to remove the character,
I realized that there were a lot of emails that were talking about her, right after that, I said to myself :
she must be a character that should not disappear, because the reader likes her a lot
Animator : he serves you water,
A: It's for you
Translator : Thank you
ICHIYA
I thought he would be the most popular, and I wish he was more popular than that,
A: Do you really like him Ichiya?
A : Those who say yes...
A : Those who say yes
A : Those who say no
A: Oh, it's 50/50
Actually it's a little more complicated than that, it's not because a character is very popular that I'm going to take this direction
And it's not because he does not meet the popularity I hope, that I will completely remove this character from the story,
It's a balance, a relationship, a special relationship…
Even if a character is not very popular with readers, there is a way to use, precisely, in the story, this type of character
The character can be used, either to bring a fall to a specific point of history, to develop the story in a particular direction,
It's precisely what makes the character of Ichiya for example,
- Friendship,
- the links strong,
- And can also add a touch of love (me: yes, so Mashima speaks well of love in FT 😉)
So for me that's the perfect cocktail of the shonen I would say,
A: And for you is it so important these values?
This is for me, yes, the perfect cocktail and that corresponds to what I wish to do in the shonen,
But today, there are all kinds of shonen manga, we can take very good shonen and that doesn't necessarily include these values there
No, no it was not early in my plans
I've no specific example to give the influence of romantic relationships that can contribute to the construction of history
But it's true that to put from time to time this, to make a small episode which deals with a love story, this gives a little spice to the history, globally
A fan : "Lissana !!! "
Animator: What did you say?
A fan : "Lissana !!! "
Animator : It's true, Mashima, you never really explain their relationship? (Natsux Lissana and Natsu x Lucy)
Do you really want to know?
Initially the relationship Natsu x Lissana interested me a lot, the fact that in the Edoras arc, she was not present at the beginning
And then the character interested me more and more so I told myself that it would be nice to bring her back to this world
I had imagined a triangular relationship between Natsu, Lissana and Lucy,
It was my intention but ...
At that time, what fans had considered about romantic relationships started to become very important,
And I thought, anyway whatever I do, they are going to hit me (lol)
And this fact, I thought to myself that the simplest thing would be that Natsu remains as it's and that there is nothing concrete happens
But inside me, I think Lissana is a nice girl, and it would be a shame to see her with a guy like Natsu
(Me : All fans of Nalu, keep calm...XD)
And I feel that the Natsu and Lucy ship is more suitable,
well ...it's more likely/it looks good
Me too, I had not expected at all that it goes in this direction
And I didn't think that Gajeel would be in FT's guild, from the moment I decided that he would be part of the guild,
I was interested to see what reaction it could cause inside the group.
And so the relationship between Gajeel and Levy has evolved throughout history,
But I cannot tell you more otherwise I will spoiler about the evolution of their relationship, but wait impatiently volume 63, you will have the answers
This is not an indispensable element, we can do without it, it's judged case by case according to the mangas
And for FT, it was not in my intention, I didn't really want to use the war development... but...
... more we got to the end of the manga , more I had ideas left to exploit and the concept of war was a tool that allowed me to put into practice all the ideas that remained to me
About the war, as you point out, there are times when there are obviously dead or disappearances,
In my case I didn't want to use that kind of thing there I didn't see it like that I saw it as a great conflict in which 2 characters fight,
, and not in case they lose something that allows them to "rebuild"
About shonen manga what is important is to have a character who opposes the generation that gave him life, and who overcomes that, it's really shonen part
I think teens in one moment or another, wonder about the behavior of adults, aand he says to himself :
"Why no one understands me, why adults don't understand me"
Mashima asks if he can draw in the same time answering questions (This was not planned by the staff)
Fan : Hello, Konichiwa, I'm Hugo Poete...
I have a project about FT, which is really great and that inspired me ...
and I decided to have a project to write a full recension of poems about FT,
so I have a model, is it possible to give it?
M: with great pleasure, please
Fan : Also I have a friend who wants to become mangaka, and who would like to have an opinion, would it be possible to give him first 5 pages she made?
Animator : oh yeah, you try...
Animator : Okay but do you have a real question? okay no... just that lol
It's the translator who will say: "your friend, if she has these pages with her, in the first row there is my editor, she can show him and he will give his opinion"
(idk if it's Mashima who say that or the translator :s)
Fan : Konichiwa, I have a question about the death of people...
I read Rave, it's one of my favorite mangas, in it there's a very important character who dies those who read Rave, Idk if you see who I'm talking about...
But anyway, I cried a lot, but it was a very important moment for one of the main characters
I was wondering how it's done, except for dragons, that no character dies in the story,
and... whether it's because to a phobia or something else from Mashima in FT
Because there is a lot of death in the flashbacks, but they are characters to which we did not really "bound" themselves, not as much as members of the guild FT for example
In fact, the chapters in which the characters dies, are chapters which meet a very big success with the readers,
At the time of Rave I was still a beginner author
So, It was a thing that I used to please the readers but it was less needed with FT
There was a form of challenge of my part, I was hoping to progress in my way of expressing things
And so, in fact, I wanted to use this thing to test me towards the readers
Konichiwa, I would like to know, if Natsu and Lucy's daughter had existed, whose name we know is Nashi ... we had a glimpse ...
I would like to know what kind of personality she would have and what magic she would use?Knowing, I guess, that would be a good mix
It's hard to say, at first I'd say, I'll let you imagine yourself
I let do your imagination, to know what kind of magic she would use and what type of personality she will have
I could say it here, but I don't want you to take it seriously, but take it in the form of humor ...
A sparkling magic that projects stars for example
A bit like this ...
( Fan speaking Japanese)
Translator: Miss, miss, you don't want to ask the question in French for everyone to understand; and that everyone benefits
Fan: I say it like that, it's just to be faster and I would say it again in French
Fan who translates his message into French: when he tweets about Juvia or Gruvia, there are always people to insult him, because people, apparently ...
... I have the impression that many people hate this couple, so he gets a lot of insult messages etc ...I wanted to know what he was thinking about this
and just knowing the name of the son of Juvia and Gray, because we don't know, there is some saying "Storm" (me: I didn't understand what she said)
and know if he was going to do some autograph session
(The animator is answering the question about the autograph session)
I'm not one to take into account or be hurt by the bad comments on twitter
And about the name of the child... I have not thought about it yet
And for the autographs, I think there are some (and the animator says he answered it)
Hello, in the work of Hiro Mashima, there is a lot of "metal" (music type ),
I wanted to know if Mirajane was a tribute to Megaless for "Marijane song"
And know what was his favorite metal album of 2017
I'm not a specialist, but yes, yes, I like Metal universe in a general way, that's right,
The character who composes the music of FT is Yasuharu Takanashi , and he is a big metal fan, so that explains the fact that we find a lot of metal music in FT
And unfortunately, for what is my band, my favorite 2017 album, I'm not very good at metal music right now,
Animator : And so what is his favorite band? (The translator looks for the fan in the room, but the question comes from the animator and he says It's me I'm behind you)
Animator : There are Green Day fans here?
Fan: Hello Mashima Sensei, my question is about the French mangakas, we are not unaware that for 15 years in France, there is a generation of mangaka that starts and to truly grow in importance,
I wanted to know, if you had the opportunity to see some work of these mangakas, and if so, what would be your favorites?
Yes, yes I know, and I can tell you already and that Reno Lemaire (a French mangaka)...author of Dreamland,
With Reno we met the first time at the Japan Expo (a big French festival ) 2 years ago, we had a drawing battle session together
we know each other very well and we exchanged our numbers, then he came to Japan, and we went to the restaurant, drink... he's a good friend
And it seems to me that we have a drawing battle session planned with Reno tomorrow (it's when Mashima drew Gruvia's family ^^)
Fan : I had a question, it's going to be in 2 parts, the first one :
how Mashima managed to do the movie" Dragon Cry" and at the same time his manga?
And the 2nd we know that the last arc is in production now, if the studio contacted you to make a new film...
Does he already have an idea of what he would realize as a film? would it be even after the end of FT, or would it be a story during the series?
You can imagine, do the storyboard of a film in the same time than draw a series, to a weekly rhythm, is a really complicated thing
And If today I was offered to remake this same type of work on a film, I would like to be on a totally new story
Hello, was Erza inspired by one of your friends? someone you know
And if yes, what is the connection between Erza and Ichiya? the fact that she hated him...
the inspiration of Erza comes from a character you all know called "Jeanne d'arc"
Me: (she's a very well known character in France, Mashima had already made reference to those who noticed her in The Chapter 80 ;))
The reason she hates Ichiya is because he is too insistent to seduce her
Mashima: Thank you very much (in French)
Animator : We will take a picture...with you...
