I Hate the Vocal Bridge - Duration: 7:59.
Recently I received a comment that began with , "Oh boy, do I hate the vocal bridge".
Then later he said, "... getting through the bridge is murder".
Inside this video, I'll talk about why singers hate the vocal bridge, why it can be murder,
and how to fix it!
Hi, I'm Chuck Gilmore with Power To Sing.
The vocal bridge, which is sometimes called the passaggio or my break, is located in the
same place for every singer.
Women feel the bridge at A4 (the A above middle C), Bb, B and C5.
Women who can sing low notes like the C or D below middle C probably bridge where the
tenors and baritones bridge, which is the E4 (the E above middle C), F, and F#4.
True basses and contraltos bridge one bridge lower than the tenors and sopranos.
Virtually every voice experiences the above bridges.
Some gifted singers never have struggled singing in or through the bridge.
The rest of us average mortals are very challenged by the bridge.
The bridge is the place in the voice where the resonance and vibrations made by the vocal
cords shift from the chest voice into the head voice.
The vocal cords are also making an adjustment.
It feels weird and uncomfortable.
We panic, the larynx goes up, the voice jams up, the extrinsic muscles of the neck tighten
and then our voice cracks.
Or we push harder until we're yelling and straining and the pitch goes flat.
Or we just break into falsetto.
This is why so many singers hate the vocal bridge!
We end up picking songs that don't require us singing in the bridge.
The trouble is, most of our favorite songs require us to sing in, through or above the
bridge.
If you don't know how to bridge, it's murder when the high note lands in or above
the bridge.
Just when you want to be impressive, you crack, or go flat, or flip into falsetto or strain
and splat the word.
Or you have to go breathy and light...so it sounds like two different people singing.
The good news is, there's nothing wrong with your voice.
You just don't know how to bridge.
Here are three vocal exercises that will help you begin to feel the bridging process.
First an exercise to help you keep the larynx down while the vibrations move into your head.
It's both simple and profound.
It's called Bubble Lips.
Using a 5 tone scale, men start on the G below middle C and and women begin on middle C.
Both voices travel up 6 half steps and back down again like this.

And then back down again. Ladies start here.
Notice the feeling of the vibrations shifting up into the head and back down.
Don't let your voice crack while doing the exercises.
Second, here's an exercise that will thin or lighten the chest voice but keep the tone
connected so you don't break into falsetto.
It's called the Bratty Ney.
Do this exercise using the same scale and notes as before.

I'll show you on the ladies scale.
Do this with medium to light volume at first.
Doing it lighter will discourage grabbing the tone like this.
[Demo] The larynx is slightly higher but not enough to hurt the voice.
Third, is an exercise that will lower the larynx.
It's called the Dopey Gee.
It will help keep the larynx down while the vibration shifts into your head.
It also keeps the tone connected as you sing through the bridge.
Do this exercise using the same scale and notes as before.

Be sure to keep that dopey sound as you sing higher.
If you do it will sound hollow or hooty like this.

Once you're able to sing through the bridge without strain, breaks or breathiness, you
can discontinue the bratty and dopey sounds.
These exercises will create a new sensation in your voice.
It'll be awkward at first.
It won't be a finished sound ready to use immediately.
But it will help you know it is possible to learn to bridge.
Knowing you can learn how to bridge and sing with your full voice into your head voice
easily and confidently is life changing.

John Cena is yet another World Wrestling Entertainment success story.
After his prowess in the ring earned him millions of fans, he went on to hit a winning streak
in Hollywood as well.
But it turns out the star has a bit of a shady past.
Here are some details about Cena's life that may raise a few eyebrows.
Rock feud
Cena and Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson had a bitter war of words in and out of the ring, in a
feud that lasted for years.
Cena vented about his mentor to Jimmy Kimmel in 2009, calling him a part-timer for leaving
the ring for Hollywood.
"He says he loves the business so much, and then one day he just up and leaves."
Cena later apologized for his remarks in 2016, telling WWE,
"He has transcended this business.
And I think any time a superstar can give what he's given to the WWE… that's good
for all of us."
The wrestler continued to sheepishly backtrack on his comments, telling Sports Illustrated
in early 2017 that he was thankful for the opportunities The Rock had created for him,
especially since Cena himself had branched out into doing films.
That interview
Back in 2006, Cena made a series of controversial claims on Howard Stern's radio show, telling
the shock jock about a night when he had been with six women at once.
Cena was seemingly desperate to shed his clean-cut wrestling image and talked about sleeping
with an overweight woman as a challenge from his wrestling buddies.
"Believe it or not, there was an instance not too long ago where I hit the 280 mark."
"She took me home.
I didn't take HER home…"
"Were you attracted to her?"
"Absolutely, and the experience was great!"
He also said he regularly slept with his fans.
"When it's there, it's hard to say no.
I'm a man."
Shocking split
The burly wrestler wed his high school girlfriend in 2009, and in 2012, declared his love for
her during a WWE Raw match.
But just two months later, Cena filed for divorce.
At the time, he blamed the split on a stressful home-remodeling that was causing, quote, "unbearable
strife" between him and his wife.
However, his wife was blindsided by the divorce filing, and accused the wrestler of cheating
on her with multiple women.
The pair ended up working things out amicably, and Cena later admitted responsibility for
the split, telling Rolling Stone his marriage had ended…
"...because of my inability to be a good husband."
Strict agreement
Cena and fellow wrestler Nikki Bella started dating in 2012, and their love affair has
not been without its own ups and downs.
Just a year into their relationship, the couple decided to move in together; but in order
to do so, Cena demanded Bella sign a 75-page co-habitation agreement, meaning she had to
adhere to all of his house rules.
The stunned beauty eventually conceded and signed the papers so she could live with her
man.
How romantic?
Stubborn and selfish
Cena wasn't always so keen on the idea of walking down the aisle again.
In fact, he's openly admitted to being, quote, "stubborn" and "selfish" when it comes to
both marriage and having kids, two topics near and dear to his fiance's heart.
He told Rolling Stone in 2016,
"Just because everyone else is happy with children doesn't mean that's how I have to
live."
"It's not negotiable.
We've been to therapy over it.
I don't think it will ever be over with."
While they still have no plans to expand their family, Bella later got him to change his
tune on marriage.
He told E! News,
"To be quite honest with you, Nicole has taught me a lot about what she believes the union
between two people is and she's made me a believer out of it."
Trainwreck lies
In 2015, Cena tried his hand at comedy in the movie Trainwreck.
The wrestler even ad-libbed his infamous love scene with Amy Schumer.
But while the scene went over very well with movie audiences, Cena's girlfriend wasn't
exactly thrilled about it — especially since he waited about a month after signing onto
the project to tell her it was happening.
"I want to be the only one that sees him naked.
And yes, to some people, it's just an ass.
But to me, that's my ass."
"She has such beautiful brown eyes and they glowed with red hell fire."
"Yeah!"
