Trump's new tariff announcement may trigger global 'trade war' - Duration: 2:26.

U.S. President Donald Trump looks like he's standing firm on his plan to slap hefty tariffs

on imports of steel and aluminum, including those from key U.S. allies like South Korea.

The tariffs have been met with criticism around the world... and warnings that he's about

to start a global trade war.

Many countries say they're considering similar, reciprocal tariffs on American goods.

Lee Jeong-yeon has more.

The off-the-cuff announcement by U.S. President Donald Trump that he would impose heavy tariffs

on all steel imports,... has already set off a ripple of responses from world leaders.

The EU, Canada, and China have said that if these tariffs are finalized, they will take

reciprocal measures to impose taxes on American products.

There is evident tension between the U.S. and China.

Beijing said it's ready to impose tariffs on American agricultural products, an apparent

move targeting American farmers,... who are an important support base for President Trump.

As the second biggest market in the world, China has been the main target of the Trump

administration's trade policies.

This is concerning for South Korea as trade with both the U.S. and China is vital for

the Korean economy.

The Seoul government expects further tariffs on cars and semi-conductors, as Trump sees

the car industry as the sector in which South Korea saw the greatest trade surplus with

the U.S..

To this, South Korean President Moon Jae-in said:

"We will deal with it with confidence... that we can overcome anything if the government

and businesses cooperate."

Meanwhile, the EU has said it would start looking to impose tariffs on American products

like Harley Davidson motorcycles, bourbon whiskey and Levi's jeans.

"Protectionism cannot be the answer to our common problem in the steel sector...We will

not sit idly while our industry is hit with unfair measures that put thousands of EU jobs

at risk."

Canada, the number one steel exporter to the U.S., has also said it's ready to take reciprocal

action were tariffs to be imposed on its steel and aluminum products.

Responding to the fallout, the Washington Post has urged the Trump administration to

make exceptions for certain U.S. allies.

Its editorial board said Friday that there is no national security risk posed by importing

steel and aluminum from treaty allies like Canada, Japan, South Korea and Germany, and

that alienating those countries diplomatically would hurt U.S. interests.

S. Korean president's special envoys fly to Pyongyang for two-day visit - Duration: 2:34.

South Korean President Moon Jae-in's senior delegation took a chartered flight to North

Korea this Monday afternoon... for the start of historic talks.

A chartered flight carrying South Korean President Moon Jae-in's special delegation led by his

top national security adviser and represented by his chief intelligence officer took off

for North Korea Monday afternoon... marking the first such visit under the Moon administration

and the first in 11 years.

Prior to leaving for Pyongyang on Monday, President Moon's national security director

leading the delegation said he will relay the South Korean leader's hopes for North

Korean nuclear disarmament and a permanent peace on the Korean Peninsula.

"I will certainly deliver President Moon's firm resolve to achieve a denuclearization

of the Korean Peninsula and genuine and permanent peace on the Korean Peninsula.

My team and I will also push for 'in-depth' talks to find ways to help arrange the restart

of dialogue between North Korea and the U.S."

North Korea has repeatedly said it will not put its nuclear program on a negotiating table,

while the United States has made it clear that it doesn't want talks for the sake of

talks and said all options, including military measures, are on the table.

Chung, a longtime diplomat, heads a 10-member delegation that includes intelligence chief

Suh Hoon... with a 30-year career at South Korea's intelligence agency who has been involved

in the coordination of the two previous inter-Korean summits in 2000 and 2007 and vice Unification

Minister Chun Hae-sung, another veteran official in North Korean affairs... for the next two

days in Pyongyang that will most likely include talks with leader Kim Jong-un.

"The high-profile delegation is to reciprocate the trip by North Korean leader Kim Jong-un's

sister and special envoy, Kim Yo-jong, on the occasion of the PyeongChang Winter Olympic

Games."

Kim Yo-jong delivered an invitation from her brother for the South Korean president to

visit Pyongyang at an early date for what would be a third inter-Korean summit.

South Korea's special envoys are also carrying a written message from President Moon which

they may be able to deliver to the North Korean leader as early as Monday evening if Kim shows

up to host dinner for the South Koreans.

If and when that meeting is realized, it would mark the first time for any South Korean to

meet Kim in person since he took power upon his father's death in late 2011.

After the two-day Pyongyang trip, President Moon's special envoys are to fly to the United

States to brief officials about the outcome of their talks with North Korean officials.

Second session of China's annual parliamentary gathering opens - Duration: 2:32.

China is holding its annual parliamentary gathering, known as the "two sessions."

It began with the much-anticipated announcement of China's official economic growth target

for this year,... set at 6-and-a-half percent,... the same as last year.

But the focus of the two sessions this time will be on scrapping China's two-term presidential

limit.

Once ratified, that'll allow Xi Jingping to stay in power indefinitely.

Kwon Jang-ho has this report.

The second of the 'two sessions', or 'Liang Hui' gathernig opened on Monday.

Premier Li Keqiang began by announcing the government's economic growth target for the

upcoming year.

Beijing has decided to maintain its growth target at around six-point-five percent for

a second year running.

That comes despite the country's economy exceeding expectations last year, hitting 6-point-NINE

percent growth.

The conservative target is seen as a signal that the government is trying to rein in the

nation's spending, reduce debt and improve overall financial stability.

"The past few years have witnessed an anemic world economic recovery, volatility in global

financial markets, and a sharp rise in protectionism.

In China, structural issues and underlying problems have become more acute, downward

pressure on the economy has continued to mount, and we have met with no small number of dilemmas."

However, economic issues at this year's gathering have been overshadowed by political ones.

Last month, Beijing announced that it would be scrapping its two-term presidential limit,

clearing the way for Xi Jinping to stay in office beyond the end of his second term in

2023.

That decision is expected to be ratified during the course of the 'two sessions' over the

next 10 days or so.

The president's political philosophy, known simply as 'Xi Jinping Thought', is also expected

to be integrated into China's constitution.

These moves essentially elevate Xi to the same level as China's first communist leader,

Mao Zedong, and although it has caused alarm in some circles, the 'two sessions' is largely

seen as a rubber-stamping ceremony, with little objection raised by the 5-thousand-or-so delegates

attending.

forever.

S. Korean delegation heads to N. Korea for talks - Duration: 1:05.

The South Korean delegation took off from Seongnam Air Base just south of Seoul at about

1:50pm.

They'll be landing this afternoon at Sunan Airport in Pyongyang.

The delegation has five main members led by national security adviser Chung Eui-yong.

It also includes the director of South Korea's National Intelligence Service, Suh Hoon,...

the vice minister of unification, Chun Hae-sung,... and five support staff.

They'll be in the North for two days, during which they'll likely meet with leader Kim

Jong-un and deliver a written message to him from President Moon Jae-in.

Nothing official about that the timing of that meeting has been announced, but South

Korean reports say it could happen as soon as tonight or possibly at a luncheon on Tuesday.

As head of the South Korean delegation, Chung Eui-yong said, above all, his goal is to convey

President Moon's determination to keep the recent inter-Korean detente going.

He also said the trip is meant to reciprocate the visit to South Korea by Kim Jong-un's

sister, Kim Yo-jong, who came to PyeongChang for the Winter Olympics last month.
