Hello again! And welcome back.
So! What vocabulary words should we talk about today?
Well...let's look at riffraff and to fall in lockstep.
riffraff refers to people or a group of people that are regarded as not being reputable or
who are worthless; the lowest classes of society, or people who lack proper behavior, speech
or dress.
Once the riffraff started to show up at the club, most of its professional customers went
elsewhere.
Your classmate makes too many offensive and racist jokes.
We prefer to not have that type of riffraff at the party.
To fall in lockstep means to condition oneself to conform to standards or methods of function;
to move in a rigid or inflexible pattern or behavior of perceived normality.
If he doesn't fall in lockstep with the group, we will ask the professor to remove him from
our project.
The NFL teams fell in lockstep when certain players took a knee during the national anthem.
This behavior created a lot of anger amongst the fans.
I hope you enjoyed these vocabulary words: riffraff and to fall in lockstep.

Reprogramming Skin to Grow New Organs Is Now Possible - Duration: 2:37.
A team of researchers have developed an incredible new technology that allows them to reprogram
skin cells into any cell an ailing body needs, with a single touch.
The technology is called Tissue Nanotransfection (TNT).
It involves using nanochip technology that could generate any kind of cell within a patient's
own body.
The new cells could repair injured tissue or restore function of aging tissue, organs,
blood vessels and even nerve cells.
Here's how it works a nanotechnology-based chip about the size of a postage stamp is
placed on the skin and stimulated by an electrical current.
In less than a second the chip creates nanometer-scale entry pathways into tissue cells.
Or, basically, provide a way to access skin cells -- like an opening.
These openings can be used to deliver a cocktail of reprogramming factors.
This "cocktail" is a combination of genes that reprogram the cell's DNA.
Reprogramming the cell basically turns a skin cell into an induced pluripotent stem cell.
As you probably know stems cells can then be reprogrammed into any cell the body needs. And
it does all this without hurting the patient, or having to take the cells out of the body.
Which is how we currently do stem cell therapy.
This technology allows any cell to turn into a stem cell provided, of course, it's a
dividing cell.
Skin cells naturally replenish so are a perfect "fertile land" where the elements of any
new organ can be grown.
In this study, the team was able to reprogram skin cells to become vascular cells in a mouse's
leg that was in need of better blood flow.
In two weeks, the leg was saved.
Skin cells reprogrammed into nerve cells were also able to repair the brains of mice recovering
from strokes!
This technology is still in the research phase.
So far it's only been tested on mice, but the team hopes to begin clinical trials soon.
The implications of cell reprogramming are huge.
Something as simple and easy as this method could change stem cell therapy forever.
Doctors could just, recruit your own cells to fix a problem… and it's not like you're
short on cells… why not put them to good use?

any kind of creative juices they may have.
even writing down in a journal what it is that they like how they felt when they did
it is all good stuff i think its good for your heart and for your mind and for soul.
My name is Pat Merlo and the name of my blog is beauty and the brawn
my blog is primarily about renovations, home renovations projects some crafts that we've done the reason that
I began blogging was to document everything that Gary and I and our family how we have
made everyone of out homes into what we believe was ours and by doing so i thought it was
important to be able to document it and as we documented it i found that I love to blog
not necessarily just the before and after but about a lot of things.
and um I think that mostly for me its the creativity outlet that I have my real job
doesn't quite give me that outlet.
Im a senior vice president of a large financial institution.
my name is Gary Merlo what I do is I work for a demolition company in Fresno i was kinda
asked to help out on this blog. one day my wife came in the garage she goes you wanna
do some blogging and I go whats a blog? she gets these great ideas and she uh puts them
together and uh they really worked out fine.
she did little things first she started building like little wreathes or little things for
the wall and it came out really nice and then she started getting to little bigger projects
and before you know it then shes asking me to build this and then she would finish it.
Pat came up to me and says hey you know can you build this and uh if you can I want to
take pictures of it.
so I can show people how you go about it so we have a start and a finish product so she
would give me a project and i would just put it together or build it the way she wants
it its kind of interesting cause like i said pat will she dreams up of just this project
and we kind of sit down and draw it up and then I put it together for her.
I build it the finished product is kinda neat cause as we work together well lets try this
or lets change this and add this we get to the end of the project its uh how she likes
it or comes out even different than what we planned but it came out better
so when I told Gary I was going to start a blog he said "ok what does that mean?"
"whats a blog?"
"what are we gonna do?" and he supports me no matter what I do I don't know that he realized
that I was gonna have him do extra projects and things so that I could blog about it so
hes been a real trooper about that.
with Pat behind me it makes it uh more interesting and more challenging and everything.
it takes it takes a family to make it work.
you know its something that you just if one person is involved it's gonna take you away
from the other person we are very lucky we have this its almost like a hobby for us.
its something that we do together and we kinda thrive on it she works on me and I work on
her and we work good together like that its kind of a family thing
probably the main reason I blog is because of my family doing something together as a family is what satisfies me
and so any time that we can be a part of our sons families and they want to include us
we jump at it we love it so at any point in time that anyone of them come to us and say
"hey mom and dad we have this idea what do you think?" we are on it.
I believe that the blog has evolved more about just Gary and I doing stuff um its evolved
more into Gary and I and our family.

Patrick Gasda, a postdoctoral researcher at Los Alamos National Laboratory said: "Because
borates may play an important role in making RNA - one of the building blocks of life - finding
boron on Mars further opens the possibility that life could have once arisen on the planet.
"Borates are one possible bridge from simple organic molecules to RNA.
Without RNA, you have no life.
"The presence of boron tells us that, if organics were present on Mars, these chemical reactions
could have occurred."
RNA is ribonucleic acid, a nucleic acid present in all modern life which is involved in the
decoding and expression of genes from DNA.
It is known to be unstable, so unless boron is present it decomposes quickly.

That means boron was present in Mars groundwater and indicates that the Gale crater, where

Trump's Next Move on Health Care? Choice for Secretary May Offer Clue - Duration: 11:23.
Trump's Next Move on Health Care? Choice for Secretary May Offer Clue
WASHINGTON — President Trump's selection of a secretary of health and human services could be a turning point in a health care debate that has polarized Washington, as he faces a choice of working with Democrats to fix the current system or continuing his so-far failed efforts to dismantle his predecessor's program.
The resignation of Tom Price as secretary late Friday over his use of costly chartered jets capped a week of setbacks on health care for a president who made the issue a centerpiece of his campaign and his first eight months in office.
Mr Trump's decision on a successor could be an opportunity to shift the debate, but he faces the prospect of an arduous confirmation battle.
The president has sent mixed signals since the latest effort to repeal and replace President Barack Obama's Affordable Care Act collapsed in the Senate.
He has asserted that he has the votes to pass the repeal legislation and will try again in early 2018, while also saying he wanted to negotiate with Democrats who are adamantly against it.
Many will look to his choice for a secretary to see whether he wants to continue the battle or find a compromise. Democrats urged him to use the moment to change course.
"Let's get a new H.H.S. secretary who's finally devoted to improving health care, move past these debates and come to bipartisan agreement on how to stabilize markets and make health care cheaper," said Senator Christopher S.
Senator Ron Wyden of Oregon, the senior Democrat on the Senate Finance Committee, said the departure of Mr Price could begin "a new chapter for the Trump administration's health care agenda." The White House had no comment on Saturday, but the two most frequently mentioned candidates to succeed Mr Price are two officials who already work in the department: Seema Verma, the administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, and Scott Gottlieb, the commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration.
Both have previously been vetted by the White House, nominated by the president and confirmed by the Senate to their current jobs within recent months, a significant selling point.
Other names have been floated as well, including David Shulkin, the secretary of veterans affairs and a favorite of the president's, but he has been criticized for a European trip with his wife that mixed business and sightseeing and was partially financed by taxpayers.
Some reports have floated former Gov. Bobby Jindal of Louisiana, an assistant secretary of health and human services under President George W. Bush.
But he was a caustic critic of Mr Trump during his own brief campaign for the White House that ended in late 2015 after he called the future president a "narcissist" and "egomaniacal madman." Mr Trump may not necessarily fill the post quickly.
He has left the Department of Homeland Security in the hands of an acting secretary since John F. Kelly left in July to become White House chief of staff.
The president appears to be in no rush despite a series of hurricanes and a roiling immigration debate, issues managed by the department. He said on Friday that he would make a decision "probably within a month." If Mr Trump picks Ms.
Verma to succeed Mr Price at the Department of Health and Human Services, it would be taken as a sign among many that he wants to continue vigorous opposition to the Affordable Care Act, with the government doing the minimum required by the law to implement its provisions.
Verma, an ally of Vice President Mike Pence, worked closely this year with Republicans in Congress on their proposals to undo the law and to cut Medicaid, the program for more than 70 million low-income people.
Still, some progressives have interpreted her work under the health care law in Indiana, where Mr Pence was governor, to mean that while she opposed the Affordable Care Act, she was committed to finding ways to enforce it if it remained on the books.
Mr Gottlieb has more experience in Washington and was seen at the time of his appointment as the more moderate of candidates being considered.
In his first months at the F.D.A., he has deftly balanced the concerns of patients and pharmaceutical companies, while taking steps to combat the opioid epidemic and speed access to lower-cost generic drugs.
His nomination would be seen as a signal that the president might want to take a different approach to the health care debate.
"We have the votes on the substance but not necessarily on the process, which is why we're still confident that we can move health care forward and get it done in the spring," Sarah Huckabee Sanders, the White House press secretary, said before Mr Price's resignation.
After the latest legislative failure, Mr Trump said he would sign an executive order in the coming week intended to enable Americans to buy health insurance across state lines, a sign that he did not intend to wait for Congress.
But it is not clear that he has the authority to do that on his own, and states often resist federal efforts to intrude on their regulation of insurers.
Senator Lamar Alexander of Tennessee, the Republican chairman of the Senate health committee, and Senator Patty Murray of Washington, the panel's ranking Democrat, have resumed negotiations on bipartisan legislation intended to shore up the current insurance exchanges and prevent prices from shooting up.
The uncertainty comes at a crucial moment, just as federal and state officials are preparing for the fifth annual open enrollment period under the Affordable Care Act. The open season, when people can sign up for coverage, runs from Nov.
Critics say that the Trump administration has destabilized insurance markets, driving up premiums for 2018 and making it harder for people to enroll.
Mr Price was confirmed in February by a party-line vote of 52 to 47 after giving vague, noncommittal answers about how he intended to carry out the Affordable Care Act. Confirmation of his successor could be an even sharper battle.
Democrats may not have the votes to block confirmation, but they could drag out the process and make it excruciatingly difficult for the nominee and the White House.
Democrats expect to press the new nominee for more specific answers to questions like these: Will the administration support bipartisan efforts to continue critically important payments to insurance companies, payments that Mr Trump has threatened to cut off? Why has the president slashed funds for advertising, outreach and education programs and assistance to consumers who want to sign up for health insurance this fall? Neither Ms.
Verma nor Mr Gottlieb had easy confirmations to their current post, but neither seems as strongly determined to undermine the Affordable Care Act as Mr Price was.
Verma, who earned a bachelor's degree in life sciences at the University of Maryland and a master's degree in public health at Johns Hopkins University, founded her own health policy consulting firm, SVC, and worked with state agencies to carry out the Affordable Care Act.
Working with Mr Pence when he was governor, she was the architect of the Healthy Indiana Plan, which expanded Medicaid under the Obama-era law. Rather than simply refusing to participate, as many Republican-led states did, Indiana under the program shaped by Ms.
Verma expanded eligibility while emphasizing "personal responsibility" by requiring beneficiaries to pay premiums and contribute to health savings accounts, and giving them incentives for healthy behavior.
Republicans saw that as a model for conservative enactment of the program, while Democrats criticized what they saw as roadblocks for low-income Americans. She was confirmed to her current post in March on a largely party-line 55-to-43 vote.
Mr Gottlieb, who received a bachelor's degree in economics from Wesleyan University and a medical degree from Mount Sinai School of Medicine, served in several posts during President George W. Bush's administration, including deputy commissioner of the F.D.A.
While in the private sector, he worked as a fellow at the American Enterprise Institute in Washington and served as a consultant for pharmaceutical companies.
Republicans said that experience would make him a formidable commissioner because he would understand the business better, while Democrats said it made him too cozy with the industry he would regulate.
While a physician, Mr Gottlieb has also experienced the industry as a patient, having been successfully treated for Hodgkin's lymphoma.
After promising to divest himself from several health care companies and recuse himself for one year from decisions involving those businesses, he was confirmed in May on a 57-to-42 vote.

The Virtue of Not Knowing - Duration: 1:35.
This is a new perspective on the fallibility of human beings as something that's actually good.
Our minds are capable of error, which is the greatest strength, and weakness, of the human condition.
Most organisms react automatically or instinctually to environmental cues.
The lion is hungry, it chases a gazelle.
The gazelle is frightened, it runs away.
The rabbit is horny...
it makes more rabbits.
This automatic input-output mechanism has little room for error - and thus, little room
for experimentation and improvement.
The human mind has the capacity to rise above - and often below - mere empirical sense data.
So, we can reject the evidence of our direct senses and put a blocker between input and
reaction.
We don't have those instincts that are just there, telling us what to do.
And even though we bemoan that fact and wish we had instinctive knowledge and knew what
to do automatically in a lot of scenarios, this would actually take away our ability
to experiment and create these amazing ideas which are the foundation of reason, science,
truth, art - practically everything that makes us human.
I think doubt gets a bad rap in most people's minds.
When I was growing up, a lot of authority figures used my doubt to control me, and made
me feel like the fact that I had doubts was some sort of strike against me.
That's an unfortunate tragedy of our time, that we treat our young people in such a way
as to ridicule them for having doubts, and to paralyze them from becoming moral actors.

have been a great experience. A great experience because of so many different
nationalities and so many young people coming from from Korea Ankara Germany, and... it
was my expectation and it has been it has been at the level of my expectations.
The groups were well makes the during during our work and I I met everyone I
talked to to everyone the first day. So these expectations were met and you were
satisfied? yeah yeah meeting students and comparing our our approach to - to what
we study - away we elaborated during like lectures and it was... it is very well. It
enreaches our experience. Did you like the group work ? was it that effective? yeah
yeah really effective. Really effective.
Also the... the presentation the presentation I think is a really a
really good work for improving our our language and improving our
our ability to...to talk and express concepts and also is really it can improve
our our ability to have teamwork work in team. Is there any topic that you especially
like though that was interesting for you from considering your specific
background? I saw the... the... the subject who are really broad so I was interested in
something in particular and founded and founded some some subjects and not so
interesting for me. So I was interested in information retrieval and and also
all the two subjects and and the other more humanistic more more more
humanistic didn't didn't the had had an impact on me but probably for for my for
my background of over I'm studying. Definitely!! Any suggestions for us for
next time? what should suggest? probably the main the main
