Waching daily Jun 22 2018

What would you do if you knew you were going to die?

If your heart was broken, beyond repair?

If you knew you would never grow old, and that any breath could be your last?

Alex Preston has faced this question throughout his entire life.

He has grown up knowing that, eventually, he will literally die of a broken heart.

Faced with the constant, pressing issue of his own mortality, he once kept his pain hidden

from the world – until one day, when he decided that if he was to die, he would leave

behind a legacy that couldn't be ignored.

This is the story of Hyper Light Drifter, a video game that was born of pain and suffering.

This is the story of Alex Preston, and the weak heart that inspired a digital masterpiece.

[intro] Alex Preston has always known that he is not

long for this world.

Alex was born with a congenital heart defect, as well as a rare genetic disease.

As a baby, he underwent open heart surgery in an attempt to lengthen his life expectancy.

This early surgery worked, but it isn't the only time Alex's heart has gone under

the knife.

Throughout his life, Alex has suffered the pains of his illness.

He takes a cocktail of drugs on a daily basis just to keep himself alive, and he must stick

to a strict routine in order to ensure that he can keep his health up.

Any bout of sickness could be his last, and even something as simple as eating the wrong

food could cause him significant pain.

So how does a person live with the knowledge that their life will likely be cut short?

In Alex's case, he uses art as an outlet for his struggles.

Alex studied an art degree at college, using his creative works to reflect his own personal

challenges and health issues.

While he later felt that his early art was pretty awful, Alex appreciates that these

early works were important for him to learn to express himself.

Creating terrible art is simply a rite of passage that every artist must pass through.

Upon his graduation, Alex moved on with his life as best he could.

He worked as a freelance artist, drawing when he was healthy enough, while also taking time

to rest when necessary as his illness periodically slowed him down.

When possible, Alex also made art for himself, which continued to draw inspiration from his

own trials.

He hoarded these, keeping them to himself, as he didn't feel like he wanted to share

them with the world.

They were simply his own method of coping with the constant threat of death.

Throughout this, Alex maintained a keen sense of humor.

His doctors were amazed at how he would come into appointments, making wry observations

filled with dark jokes, even as he discussed matters of his own life and death.

Then, Alex hit a particularly rocky patch.

He was hospitalized, and for a while, things looked bleak.

This might be the end.

But as he lay there in the hospital, Alex decided that he wasn't ready to go just

yet.

He realized that he needed the world to know who he was before he left.

If he was to go, he wanted to make sure he'd leave something behind that would make people

sit up and pay attention.

And so, Alex pulled through, and upon discharge, he began working on a plan to share his unique

perspective, and his own personal trials, with the world.

Alex decided that he wanted to make a video game; a piece of interactive fiction that

would put the player in Alex's shoes so that they could feel, even in an abstract,

metaphorical fashion, a little of what he feels every day.

He started by making sketches and storyboards, and then trying his hand at using game engines.

This game would be driven by pictures and images, with no spoken dialogue.

He wanted things to stay ambiguous, but not so ambiguous that the meta-story wasn't

apparent.

Things really ramped up when Alex began working with a programmer, Beau Blyth, at which point,

Hyper Light Drifter began to take shape.

The pair prepared for a Kickstarter, and Alex finally shared his story with the world.

In his campaign outline, he was completely honest about what was driving the project,

how he felt as a man with a serious heart condition, and why he wanted to turn this

experience into a fantasy video game.

Alex even named his fledgling game studio Heart Machine, succinctly explaining the focus

of his game, and the omnipresent issue within his own life.

To Alex's complete surprise, the resounding response that came from the internet was,

"We hear you, and we want to know more".

Alex had initially set a goal of earning 27,000 dollars in order to make Hyper Light Drifter

a reality.

By the time the funding window closed, backers had pledged over 645 thousand dollars.

This was incredible!

Alex hadn't expected a reaction that was anything like this!

Something in his game pitch genuinely seemed to speak to people, and he now had the chance

to make his game the way he wanted.

Very quickly, the project ran into delays.

Part of this came from the generous funding that Heart Machine had received.

With more money came the opportunity to expand the game's scope – and that meant that

things were going to take more time.

Hearth Machine grew, as many new team members joined the project, all under Alex's direction.

Delays were also cause by illness.

All the money in the world couldn't fix Alex's heart.

They couldn't erase his genetic condition either.

Alex worked when he could, and when he was sick, things slowed down.

There was no way around this.

At one point during development, Alex had to endure another round of surgery, as doctors

fitted a new artificial valve within his heart.

It helped to keep him alive, and that was the priority, so the game had to take a back

seat as he recovered.

Slowly, everything within the game fell into place.

Alex filled his creation with overt references to his disease.

The story follows a character with a similar, fatal illness.

While it is never clearly explained, the character is seen coughing up blood, and passing out

at different points in the narrative.

Alex and his team littered the game with beating heart imagery.

Meanwhile, he put his own story front and center as he talked to press and interested

gamers.

He wasn't able to do everything he wanted to do.

There were events and expose that Alex would have liked to attend, but he simply couldn't

handle the journey, and the time on the show floor.

The strain would have been too much for him.

Finally, Hyper Light Drifter launched, and gamers loved it.

This was clearly a game that was about something; a piece of art that was more than a simple

action simulator.

The game was nominated for many prestigious awards, both for its art, design, and its

music.

Alex enjoyed the praise that came his way, even if it was sometimes bittersweet.

He was offered the chance to travel to Japan to speak at a conference, but he had to decline

because the journey would be too much to bear.

Nevertheless, he was pleased with his creation.

Alex had set out to show the world his viewpoint; to make sure that people understood him and

the struggle he faced thanks to his illness.

He had achieved this, and had managed to share his story with the world.

To this day, Alex continues to be active in the gaming world.

He knows that his time is limited, but he intends to make the most of it.

The moral of the story is that heartbreak can lead to beauty.

Alex Preston took all of his pain and suffering, and channeled it into a piece of art.

He made something positive out of all the negative things in his life.

Alex's attitude in the face of adversity – his ability to keep smiling and joking

when facing death – is to be commended.

This isn't easy, and facing our struggles isn't always pleasant.

Don't give up hope.

No matter what you're faced with, if you keep pushing forward, you may surprise yourself

with just how much you can accomplish.

Don't learn Phrasal Verbs - Duration: 6:54.

Hi there, Vladimir here with another video about how to learn English

One of the most common pieces of advice

native English speaking teachers on YouTube give is

Learn and use phrasal verbs

Learn and use phrasal verbs in order to sound like native,

like a Brit,

like an American

Video after video with lists of phrasal verbs

countless videos with crazy number of views

Why people, why are you wasting your time watching useless YouTube videos

Listen to me carefully:

Don't learn phrasal verbs

Let me say that again in case you missed it

Don't learn phrasal verbs

phrasal verbs should not be your priority

Why you shouldn't learn phrasal verbs?

Because phrasal verbs are not that frequent, not that common

One of the most important things about learning a foreign language

is something called Defining vocabulary

And when we say dictionary we mean monolingual learner's dictionaries

In my book Virtually Native I talk a lot about monolingual learner's dictionaries

defining vocabulary and word frequency,

it is one of the pillars of my method

All major English learner's dictionaries use defining vocabulary

Longman dictionary of contemporary English uses approximately 2,000 words

Macmillan dictionary about 2500 words

And what follows is the list of those 2,500 words

My question to you is:

How many of those words are phrasal verbs?

Take a guess

Out of 2,500 words you need to learn first, the most frequent English words

How many are phrasal verbs?

25 phrasal verbs

25 out of 2,500

1%

That's according to Macmillan Dictionary, not me

in the description section down below I've provided a link to Macmillan

you can count them up yourself

Don't get me wrong,

phrasal verbs are important,

but not your priority.

You need phrasal verbs for language tests

I know that,

however

there are much more important words you need to learn first.

Make sure you know the

2475 most common words, 25 most common phrasal verbs

before you spend a second on any other phrasal verbs

there are much more useful and important words you need to learn first

and when I say important I mean frequent & common

In my book Virtually Native, in the chapter on Common vs difficult

I talk a lot about word frequency and defining vocabulary

as well as active and passive vocabulary

something native English speaking teachers know nothing about

Stop listening to native speakers about how to learn their native language

stop watching useless YouTube videos, stop clicking right and left

Nobody has ever learned a foreign language watching YouTube videos

of people giving them lists of words

Stop wasting your time and read my book Virtually Native

and learn about word frequency,

about active vs passive vocabulary,

learn about what's important and what's not

Stop wasting your time

The fight is for the 1%

My book is available on Amazon and virtuallynative.com

How To Make Getter Grime WITH A MOUSE - Duration: 4:14.

So first I hop into illustrator Brad just over

YouTube

Huo, no, wait, and after I posted a picture a

Lot of you guys and I mean a lot of you that's when how I make this

So here is the digital grime art tutorial, but first some of you asked what's happening. Well, I'm shape

Actually didn't make a cool investment. I copped an extra pen 15.6 and absolutely

I'm doing the drawing with the mouse because I assume that's what most of you guys have

So first, I hop into illustrator, right just go right now here

Use the pencil tool press the end key to use there and I kind of just sketch out

Where I want the grime to go when you're doing this

Make sure you draw the slime on the side of the shape and not the inside it makes it look more natural

Be sure when you have an open space

Like this that you draw the curved line and between it just to make it look better when drawing crime

It's these little details like this that really make it look good

Once you do that go to YouTube subscribe to my channel turn on post notifications

Go to Jason Seacrest his channel he has this brush set thing. That is an absolute necessity for mice users

Like the double-sided tape now we're gonna hop into Photoshop now

We're gonna choose how we're gonna color the grind if you want to do a solid color. You're Elaine. That's easy

But if you want to do the cool gradient effect

Open a new document and just scribble a lot of the colors that you want in the graham in the document

I use the scatter brush to do this

Then just slap a gauzy and blur on that and you're good to go now drag it into the document size

Resize it so it covers the whole join

No, if there's even a little bit of space in an opening the magic selection tool will not select all of it

So make sure all your shapes are closed then I push control shift

I then control X then BAM you now have 50 plus people asking me to draw them now

What I like to do is use black to shadow. Then turn the opacity down to 13. The rest I do is just extra

my skincare routine!! [cc] - Duration: 10:31.

hello everybody! welcome to my video today which is as promised a little

while ago is a skincare routine. I've already done

my morning skincare. I've recorded already and I'm gonna do my night time

skincare this evening when I take off my makeup and all that good stuff. little

disclaimer, I only buy cruelty-free products. if anything I use in this video

is not cruelty free, which I don't think anything should be, it's because it has

been like gifted to me for whatever reason like like someone who didn't want

it and I didn't want to go to waste. or yeah, I'm pretty sure everything in this

video is cruelty-free. so that shouldn't be a problem.

and as for like plastic, I try and use packaging that doesn't have a lot of

plastic or things that last for a really long time because that's something

that I'm really conscious of is the amount of waste I produce and I don't

like buying products that I have to like buy regularly so that it causes more

plastic waste. anyway, nobody's perfect but little disclaimer, I am very

conscious of it. yeah let me know if you have any more questions, let me know your

skincare routines in the comments. like what are your favorite skincare products?

I don't know a ton about skincare and I don't feel qualified to talk too much

about skincare in terms of what specific types of things do. my roommate Monica is

like really knowledgeable on those things so I often go to her for

recommendations or to tell me whether or not a product is something I should be

using, so all of these things have been Monica approved. I think all of them have

been, which, like, to be honest is a good enough indicator for me. next clip you

see I will be super fresh-faced, just out of the shower. I apologize in advance for

my lack of eyebrows. us blonde people weren't gifted with eyebrows at birth.

hello, hello this is me fresh-faced just out of the shower. hair is still wet, yeah.

I'm gonna do my skincare. so in the shower, whenever I shower, I use let the

good times roll by lush. this is an exfoliant. it looks like this. just smells

like popcorn and cinnamon mostly. it's a soft exfoliant it uses like corn maize to

exfoliate and I've used it years and it's pretty much the only

Lush product I actively love. the cleanser I use if I don't shower and

also the cleanser I use at night right now is this warped bottle I don't know

how it got like this. it's been in my drawer and I don't really look at it, I

just pump it. anyway it's by Earth Science it's for dry and sensitive skin.

it's a creamy fruit oil cleanser with apricot and avocado lots of vitamins A D.

it's vegan, it's cruelty free, paraben free, all those things. I bought it at

Whole Foods for like six dollars I think. I'm not really spending a ton of money

on cleansers because you just wash them put them on and wash them off.

they're not actively sitting on your skin for a long time, so I like this.

It removes makeup pretty well as well cause I use that in the evening. next thing I do I

actually am really bad at using toner because I'm impatient and waiting for it

to like seep in before I move on in my skincare but sometimes in the morning

I'll use the Mario Badescu facial spray with aloe cucumber and green tea so I

guess I'll do it now because I'm on camera. the next thing I use is from The

Ordinary. you'll see quite a few things from the ordinary in my makeup and

skincare routines. this is just the hyaluronic acid from the ordinary. this

is good for dry skin so I use it. She always like pat things in so I'm doing

it to look like her but in reality I usually just kind of like press it in.

I've been using the Ordinary products for a few months now and I really like

them. I think my skin has been just more like neutral because of it. like

I don't get-- I don't a huge variation in skin as I used to like some days I'd

be very very dry some days I'd like breakout and wouldn't really know

why. I usually breakout around like that kind of a month. next thing I'm using oh

I already put it on my skin. I'll show the bottle in a second. it's by the

brand Antipodes who I have used products from for years. it's a New Zealand

skincare brand, really natural, really nice. they have a really good grapeseed

cleanser that's quite expensive but like when I have

money and feel like splashing out, I love that stuff. it's so good for removing

makeup. this is the divine face oil with rosehip and avocado oil. I've used it

for years, I love it. I think it makes my skin really like plump. I just like use

these things and hope for the best and hope that my skin is not like a dry

barren wasteland. and the final thing in the morning is moisturizer with SPF. this

is actually just from superdrug in the UK. it's really inexpensive. I love superdrug

for skin care. I have used so many other products over the years. this is

from their naturally radiant line. I haven't been to Superdrug obviously in

like a year cause I left London last May. well that's really sad, I don't want to

think about that anymore. but I still have like quite a bit of this. I've had

it for ages, like since shortly before I left. it's

just a brightening day cream with SPF. I put it on last.

I always wear SPF because look at me. I'm fair as can be. um it's

only got SPF 15 but if I'm actually gonna be out in the sun a lot, I'll put

on more SPF and also I think my makeup has SPF so I get pretty well covered in

the end. gotta make sure with the products to take them unto your neck so

you don't have like a weird neck in old age. you see this right here?

that's a hickey. and we're done. that's my morning skincare routine. it's pretty

fast, usually takes under a minute um but I like it like locks in moisture a quick

dry skin, dehydrated skin. I need to drink more water. but that's my morning.

so let's go do my makeup but you'll see that in a different video. so here's the thing,

I kind of lied. Well, I didn't lie, I just had unforeseen circumstances. I was supposed

to like take you through my whole skincare routine throughout the day and

then this evening I'd wash my face and I'd go through the routine with you. I

actually have plans tonight now and so I won't get back till really late and like

the chances of me wanting to do the skincare routine and or doing it another day

seems slim. so I'm just gonna like show you the products and not show you

putting them on. it's not much to see anyway, so as I said earlier in the video

if I am wash off the makeup, I use this Earth Sciences creamy fruit oil cleanser.

yeah this takes off my makeup pretty well unless I'm using waterproof mascara

then sometimes I have to like use like an oil or something I have coconut oil

that takes that off, if need be. but that's for the most part I just use that

and then I come in here and it's by my bedside table. I have like this little

Harry Potter glass or cup mug thing with Hogwarts on it it says Hogwarts is my

home and I keep my like skincare next to my bed so that way I have no excuse if

I'm lying in bed and like I forgot to put on moisturizer, I can just reach over

and do it. so I start with another well, again, I'm kind of lazy with the toner

but I have a toner here it's the Mario Badescu facial spray with aloe herbs and

rosewater. this is nice for reducing redness and just like being a little

cooling for the end of the day. So I'll spray that on after that I have another

Ordinary product. this is Buffet is what it's called. I think

this is kind of their most popular products. it's multiple technology peptide

serum. Hello car. this has hyaluronic acid in it and

lots of other good stuff. I then use an eye cream this is the manuka honey skin

brightening eye cream from Antipodes. I've used this forever and like I've had

this same one for years I feel like and it's still like at the top I don't know

how people get through things like this. because like I watch empties videos and

I'll see things and I'm like that would take me literally years to go through

and I know you're not supposed to keep skincare forever but definitely not gonna throw

out things that aren't empty, that's all I'm saying and then moistur-izer. moistur-izer.

that's so strange. moisturizer I use this from the ordinary

as well this is just their like pretty generic natural moisturizing factors

hydration formula service hydration. yeah hydrating. it's nice, it's like

unscented, really simple. feels good. really inexpensive. if I

haven't said this enough all of the ordinary products are under like $12, I

think maybe under $15. everything is super inexpensive and

affordable and cruelty free. I'm pretty sure vegan. like really great company I

think they're from Canada originally and they've made it to the US fairly

recently, so super into them. this isn't sponsored by them. none of this is

sponsored. it's just what I use. um I also have by my bed a product that I was

given at an event that every now and then I'll put on. I don't actually know

much about this I'm not even 100% sure it's cruelty free. I feel like I looked it

up and it is, but just in case I'm saying that. this is glow recipe watermelon glow

sleeping mask and it's this cute little bottle or container. it's like kind of

jelly like and it like you just put it on it's really like damp at first but

sinks in oh my god it smells like a watermelon Jolly Rancher, exactly like

that. and yeah I use this every now and then if I feel like I need a little

little boost of glow and hydration I'll use that. and then also just put on a lip

balm usually the glossier rose balm dot com and call it good. just like put a

bunch of moisture on my face and go to bed and hope that in the morning I wake

up glowy and beautiful. and that's my skincare routine. it's pretty simple. it

looks kind of long but on it just because like there are multiple steps.

but it I could do the whole thing in five minutes like both on both ends, it's

very quick. Thank you so much for watching my skincare routine! have a good

day, bye!

Things Wives Say That They Don't Mean | Dave and Ashley Willis - Duration: 3:51.

- Hey there, we're Dave and Ashley with Marriage Today

and we're going to talk about something that

I have dealt with a lot and I think a lot of other wives do

as well and that is things that we can say as wives

that we may not really mean.

- And as husbands, like this can create an enormous amount

of frustration so we'll give a few examples.

This is going to help you, hopefully, in your communication

because we're working through this in our own marriage.

- We do, we work through it all the time.

That's for sure, yes.

- So, for instance, one thing that she says

that I've learned over almost 20 years together

that she doesn't mean is that when we're trying to pick

a place to eat, I'll say where do you want to eat,

and she'll say, I don't care.

I don't think there's a bigger lie that's ever been spoken

to me because she'll say I don't care and I'm thinking

okay, almost 20 years in, I think, I believe this myth

every time, that means I'm going to pick the place

and she's going to be cool with it.

And it's never the case.

Because I'll start going someplace and instantly

it's like, no, I don't like that.

And I'm like okay, how about this.

Mmm, you know, I had that for lunch yesterday

and I'm not feeling that today.

And I'm like just telling me where you want to go

because there's like a place in her head that I'm supposed

to guess and it's this--

- I know, and I don't, you know, wives, if you're anything

like me, you don't mean to do this.

I don't want to drive my husband crazy by telling him--

- I know she doesn't, she's amazing.

- Right, I don't want to be cryptic in what I'm saying.

But I think that sometimes, I'm trying to be, you know,

easy going, when really, in my mind, I do have a specific

place or maybe a couple places I want to go.

So what I have found that helps--

- Well this is my favorite.

When I'll say where do you want to go and she gives me

this criteria that is the most impossible thing to define.

She'll say, I just want to go someplace that's good

and kind of healthy.

I'm like, what does that mean?

I'm like, I can go to Wendy's and get a salad,

and she's like, no, no, not that.

And I'm like, I need more information here.

I don't know what that means.

And so, it's helping, you're trying to lead me to

consensus, like you want us to have the same place

but I'm just like, you know what, we're not gonna probably

both be wanting the same thing but guys, here's the thing,

for you men, I think one of the best ways you can serve

your wife is by deferring to her preferences, right,

on everything.

I think the happiest husband or the happiest marriages

are when the husband consistently defers to her preferences

on things like a restaurant or the color of the walls

in your house.

If you're a husband that argues with your wife about

paint colors, you are dumb, alright.

I'm just going to call you out.

The wives, tag your husband if he has argued with you

about paint colors.

That's just, it's dumb, alright.

It's ridiculous.

Let her pick the colors.

- In other words, it's not worth the fight.

- It's not worth the fight.

If you'll serve her in that way,

I'm telling you, it's a happy marriage for both of you

and then she'll reciprocate.

She really will.

But with restaurants, I'm just at a happy place

where I'm like, you know what, if my wife's happy,

I can find something to eat anywhere.

I'm not going to argue about it.

- What I have been doing now that we've been married

almost 20 years, is I usually try to give like a couple

of places that I actually do want to go

but then every now and then I try to just rock his socks off

and go to places like Five Guys and actually eat a burger

with him or a steak place.

I'll be like, let's go to the steak place.

So like, it's just serving one another, again.

It's just trying to serve one another

and not expect your spouse to be a mind reader

because that is ridiculous.

And I have done that so many times

and I've learned the hard way.

- Well, and I'll her pick the restaurant

but then she always lets me get frozen yogurt afterwards

which is one of my love languages, ice cream.

- It is.

- It's all good.

It's a happy marriage.

We've got more about these, an article on things wives

say they don't mean, different fun articles

about communication and marriage just to help spark

some conversations with you guys.

So share this, help spread the word,

and together we're going to build some strong marriages

and have fun along the way.

We Might Be Totally Wrong About Alzheimer's - Duration: 5:53.

[♪ INTRO ]

Scientists might be completely wrong about Alzheimer's.

It's among the leading causes of death in the U.S., but despite decades of study, doctors

still don't know how to slow the progression of neurodegeneration and dementia, let alone

stop it.

And that might be because, according to a massive study published yesterday in the journal

Neuron, the prevailing hypothesis of how the disease starts is wrong.

Maybe it's not all about protein buildup.

Maybe there are viruses, too.

And if the findings hold up against further scrutiny, that could change everything.

The most popular idea for how Alzheimer's starts is the amyloid cascade hypothesis.

It says the disease stems from the overproduction or accumulation of proteins called beta-amyloid,

which clump together into plaques in the brain.

These plaques lead to the formation of tangles of fibrous tau proteins, and ultimately cause

the death of neurons.

The trouble is, pharmaceutical companies have been cooking up drugs that reduce amyloid-beta

production or clear out plaques for years, and none of them have stopped or slowed the

disease in people.

So the researchers behind yesterday's study decided to come at the problem from a different

angle.

Instead of starting with amyloids or any other idea about how the disease starts or progresses,

they used mathematical models.

The upside of this approach is that it doesn't require assumptions about what's happening.

Instead, it relies on massive amounts of data about everything, from the genes and their

expression levels all the way to visible symptoms of the disease, to explain what's going

on.

This method takes a lot of data, and they were able to get it through brain banks — collections

of brain tissue samples from people who elected to donate their brains for research after

they died.

Because they wanted to spot things that initiate Alzheimer's, the scientists compared healthy

brain tissue to those from people who had plaques and tangles in their brains but didn't

have symptoms yet.

So they had the disease, but it was early on—that way, the team wouldn't be misled

by things that happen in the brain later as a result of the disease.

And they specifically looked for networks of genes that were behaving very differently

in these early Alzheimer's brains and healthy controls, and for the genes that were driving

those differences.

Turns out, many of these genes were also ones that get dialed up or down when you're infected

with a virus.

So, much to their surprise, their data-driven approach implicated viruses.

And while that might seem out of left field, the idea that microbes might be behind Alzheimer's

isn't new — in fact, it's been around for at least half a century.

Some scientists have noticed links between various infections and Alzheimer's disease,

like that some infections can cause plaques to form in animal models, or that certain

microbes show up more often in diseased brains.

These links were compelling enough for them to propose an alternate model for Alzheimer's:

the pathogen hypothesis, which says the plaques are just part of the disease — not the cause.

But the idea hasn't gotten much traction in the field.

So as soon as the team from this new study saw a connection to viruses, they knew they

had to dig a little deeper.

They checked for evidence of more than 500 viruses in four different brain regions in

over 600 brain samples.

The results showed that two viruses in particular, which were types of human herpes viruses,

were elevated in Alzheimer's brains.

Despite the name, these aren't the viruses behind genital herpes, and instead are most

closely related to the strain behind roseola, a rash and fever common in young children.

They screened brains from other brain banks, too—more than 900 brains all together—and

those Alzheimer brains also had lots of these viruses.

But they weren't done.

By itself, the data they'd gathered was just another correlation.

It might not mean anything.

So they did a bunch of tests to see if the evidence, as a whole, was consistent with

the idea that these viruses could play a role in Alzheimer's—and it was.

The more genetic material people had in their brains from these viruses, the more severe

the disease was.

The team also found that certain small differences in people's DNA might be allowing the viruses

to do more damage.

In other words, in their view, those at highest risk for Alzheimer's are likely to be people

who have certain genetic predispositions combined with a viral infection.

They even tried an experiment on mice where they removed one of the genes turned down

by one of these viruses, and that led to an increase in brain plaques.

So, the team did a lot of investigating, and the results strongly suggest that viruses

are at least partially to blame for the disease.

But it's important to note that this isn't proof of causation.

The researchers were very clear about that.

So it's way too early to declare war on herpes viruses to fight Alzheimer's.

For example, this might be a weird side effect that happens because Alzheimer's somehow

makes people more susceptible to brain infections really early on.

Or, it's possible that the viruses are involved somehow in making symptoms worse, but aren't

the actual trigger of the disease.

Basically, there are a lot of hints that viruses might be to blame in some capacity, but it's

not clear how this translates clinically.

No matter what, the full picture is going to be complicated.

It's entirely possible that what we call Alzheimer's is triggered or progresses in

multiple ways — so the viruses could be involved in some cases but not others.

And maybe the person's immune system matters, too.

Either way, this new study means scientists have a lot to think about.

And since the researchers stumbled upon the viral link using an unbiased method, it may

win over enough skeptics to get funding for more experiments, like a clinical trial.

And that just might lead to a whole new way of thinking about Alzheimer's—and eventually,

ways to prevent or treat it.

The Message on Melania's Jacket - Between the Scenes | The Daily Show - Duration: 1:34.

- You know, Melania Trump with her outfits

when she goes to visit people.

Like I don't know which way it is,

'cause I mean, like everyone has different theories.

Some people think, you know, 'cause she said

I'm going to the border to see what the real story is

with the migrant children, you know, the immigrants

that have come in and they're locked up.

And I was like oh, that's really sweet.

She's gonna go and like you know, shed a light on it,

and then she throws on a jacket that says

I don't really care do you.

And then part of me was going oh, maybe she can

pay attention, she just you know, it's tone deaf,

she didn't think about it.

And then her spokesperson was like, hey, no,

there's no hidden message, it was like

we just didn't think of it, sorry about that.

And then Trump came out and tweeted

and he's like that jacket was about the fake news,

Melania's showing that she doesn't care.

And it's like she just said there's no hidden message,

and he's like hidden message.

He's like what are you, like I'm not gonna lie,

when I see things like this, it genuinely makes me

believe that Donald Trump didn't collude with Russia.

Because I think he would have told us by now.

(audience laughing)

I'm gonna put it out there.

I do believe we're gonna find out people around him

tried to collude, but I think he would have,

he tells us everything.

He just cannot, he told us why he fired James Comey,

he tells every single secret.

I don't think he'd be able to keep it in.

He'd like, at some point he would have been like

and that's why I colluded, they came to me,

I said let's do it.

I said let's do it.

(upbeat music)

Celebs Who Were Wasted On Live - Duration: 8:00.

Most of us have had a few rough nights we'd rather forget.

But imagine if one of "those nights" played out in real time, for the whole world: the

slurring and stumbling, the fumbling flirtations, and the incoherent proclamations.

Though it sounds like a scenario straight out of hell, a few unlucky celebs have suffered

this scene in real life.

Here are some stars who appeared to be totally drunk on live TV.

Mark Wahlberg

There's "Good Vibrations," and then there's…whatever's going on with Mark Wahlberg here.

"Why would you allow people to drink alcohol and come on a show"

During an appearance on The Graham Norton Show in 2013, Wahlberg did his best to promote

his film Broken City and ended up fondling Norton in the process.

"That's wrong...don't touch the man there"

Wahlberg told Digital Spy the whole thing was a pre-planned prank, saying,

"Sarah Silverman and I talked about doing something funny...tried to do a bit, and some

people took it a little too seriously."

In 2017, Norton recounted the interview on This Morning with Phillip and Holly.

He revealed they literally "couldn't get any stories going" because Wahlberg kept interrupting

everybody.

At one point, Michael Fassbender finally got through a story from start to finish.

At the time, Norton assumed it must just be a great story, but then he realized Wahlberg

had simply fallen asleep.

Norton said,

"We didn't wake him.

We were delighted.

Good.

We can get on with some of the show"

Courtney Love

It begins, as such stories often do, with Courtney Love hurtling her makeup compact

in the air, and having it whiz past a visibly bristly Madonna.

The year is 1995.

The event is the MTV Video Awards.

Eternally droll TV personality Kurt Loder interviews Madonna, who robotically answers

questions about her life.

Perhaps mercifully, the back-and-forth banter is cut short by Courtney Love's makeup.

"You may say it's a reflection of that, but it's also"

Loder makes the perfect worst choice by inviting the wobbly singer into the interview.

"Come on up!

Should we let her come up?

No don't please.

Come on, Courtney!"

What follows is a fumbled handshake, and the beginning of the most awkward interview ever.

"Look am I?

I'm interrupting...I'm feisty.

I don't mean to like, bum, bum, bum you, I"

Love then spouted a whole lotta nonsense, before someone stepped in and finally rescued

Madonna.

Whew!

Paula Abdul

In January 2007, Paula Abdul made a very out-there appearance on a Seattle TV show that found

her swaying in her seat, and laughing about nothing.

"What do Idol fans have to look forward to this season, and what are you looking forward

to seeing...is that what it is?"

At times, it seemed like there might be some audio delay issues behind the scenes.

Other times, Abdul was apparently receiving transmissions from some distant solar system.

"It's a wild party where you are"

After the clip went viral, a spokesperson for Abdul said everybody was making "much

ado about nothing," according to People.

In a subsequent appearance on The Tonight Show, Abdul told Jay Leno the nutty interview

was part of a chaotic press junket:

"You're in that one little room and you're looking at one camera and there are 30 cities

talking into your ear."

Bill Murray

In May 2015, actor Bill Murray stopped by The Late Show with David Letterman to be their

"next-to-the-last show guest."

After he fell out of a goodbye cake for the host, he sat with Letterman and took shots

from a bottle of Slovenia vodka.

The cake-covered actor then recited cryptic remarks like this:

"you married a virgin who gave birth to an infant god child really"

"I appreciate the sentiment, but one wonders, is it the vodka talking here?"

Following the Letterman appearance, Murray reportedly went out to a celebratory dinner

where he was asked last-minute to appear on MSNBC's The Last Word to discuss Letterman's

reign on The Late Show.

But by that point, he was really in his cups:

"Do you mind if we finish talking about Elizabeth Warren?

Elizabeth Warren?

Get to that now"

Everything went next-level loopy, with Murray spectacularly falling out of a chair and slurring

up a storm.

"He's just so, he just floats above everything.

He's really in a different plane than the rest of us right now"

Tracy Morgan

In 2007, former 30 Rock actor Tracy Morgan pitted himself against a Texas morning show

and the morning show lost.

Morgan became transfixed on his own image in the monitor, at one point, saying,

"Ooh, I look good.

… I am handsome!

Now I can see why I've got so many kids."

He also repeatedly smacked his belly, insisting it was his "mating call."

"That's right.

I don't have what LL got.

I don't have biscuits, I got a loaf of bread.

Come get this, ladies, you gonna eat"

But Morgan pointed out to the What's So Funny podcast in 2011 that he's, you know, an actor:

"I wasn't drunk.

People are idiots.

[…] They like to just say things on the internet.

They weren't there."

Steve-O

During a 2005 appearance on The Adam Carolla Show, professional loon Steve-O of Jackass

and Wildboyz fame was admittedly drunk, and allegedly tried to make out with Carolla.

"Steve-O is in his dressing room getting drunk"

"That is no act.

He is loaded.

He tried to kiss me with his tongue 10 minutes ago."

Carolla does his best to spin the appearance in a humorous vein, but the segment remained

intensely uncomfortable from start to finish.

One minute Steve-O is praising the host...

"I love you so hard.

I love Adam Carolla so hard"

...and the next, he's threatening to strangle him.

"I'm about to strangle you out of your own consciousness.

I thought you loved me.

I will kill you"

After a commercial break, Steve-O is gone in the literal sense, and Carolla announces

that Steve-O:

"Got a little out of hand, cut his foot, and needed to be restrained and taken backstage."

The next morning, Steve-O told the New York Post,

"I just woke up with no recollection of taping Adam's show.

Wow.

I can't help being more proud of myself."

But after Steve-O threatened to take his own life, Johnny Knoxville staged an intervention

in 2008.

According to People, in March 2018, Steve-O celebrated ten years of sobriety.

Kanye West

Stop us if you've heard this one, but in 2009, Taylor Swift accepted the award for Best Female

Video at the MTV VMA's for "You Belong To Me," saying,

"I sing country music, so thank you so much for giving me a chance to win a VMA award!"

But her speech was then interrupted by a seemingly drunk Kanye West.

As boos rang out, West announced Beyoncé should've won the award for "Single Ladies".

"But Beyonce had one of the best videos of all time!"

West was subsequently escorted out of Radio City Music Hall.

In a now-deleted blog, he wrote, after the show,

"I'm sooooo sorry to Taylor Swift and her fans and her mom."

Commenting on the incident in 2013, West told Ryan Seacrest on his KIIS-FM morning show,

"I would not want some crazy drunk rock star cutting off my daughter.

But my daughter would 100 percent also be like, 'Yes, Beyoncé did have the best video.'"

Anna Nicole Smith

Finally, there's the sad case of late Playboy model and reality star Anna Nicole Smith,

who in 2004 graced the American Music Awards with her unique brand of theatricality.

She sashayed up to the podium and slurred through her introduction for Kanye West.

"I was honored to be in our next performer's new video"

Visibly out of sorts, she stumbled, mugged for the cameras, and even groped herself.

But the story behind the bizarre public appearance is heartbreaking rather than funny.

On the 10th anniversary of Smith's death, her ex-partner, Larry Birkhead, told Wendy

Williams that breast enhancement surgery caused Smith to suffer chronic back pain among other

serious ailments, adding,

"The night before she did that award show, she actually suffered like two seizures."

Birkhead said Smith was taking prescribed medication, but that he wouldn't be surprised

if she'd been abusing it.

In 2007, Smith passed away from an accidental overdose, at 39.
