and welcome to at your library I'm your host Kathleen Clifford joining
us today is Christine Schulzs she is the director of the Janet Carlson calvert
library in Franklin Connecticut but chris is here today as the coordinator
of the Connecticut author trail the Connecticut author trail is celebrating
its 10th year this summer congratulations thank you
so welcome to at your library my talk show for our viewers out there we're
gonna hear all about the Connecticut author trail today and when it starts
and what it is and how you can go so let's jump right in and tell us how did
the Connecticut Arthur trail starts it began when I was a new director Franklin
was a new library and I was trying to think of ways to bring people in and one
of the things was by having authors come in there we liked authors and libraries
are just a natural fit so I started by asking area libraries like the ones
around me 11 in spray Guilford Smith if they would like to do a series of
authors and we they agreed and this way I got to meet directors and being new
and we all picked out authors and we just put it in a trail so
it started out with 12 okay twelve twelve libraries and it's kind of neat
because here in Connecticut with your library card you can visit any library
in our state so this is a really good opportunity for people to visit other
libraries also and it brings in people all libraries have something special and
and either it's the building architect it's the just the programs that they
offer and and this was a way to bring people in and cool off during a hot
summer night so this year's kickoff is July 10th yes and it's at my library and
in Franklin and it's at the rink library yes which i think is unnatural yes yes
how many libraries do you have her participating this year this year we
have thirty thirty so from 12 to 30 and ten years so how has the trail grown
over those ten years how has it well first it started with support from my
friends of the library okay for the Calvert library I when I
told them what I wanted to do they they say go for it they're very supportive
very supportive of the trail um and then as I went around to different libraries
and started meeting more more librarians and and talked about it and
word-of-mouth between the libraries okay um it just kept growing and this year we
added three new libraries really yeah and we have it's not just public
libraries it's also College we have Quinta bug Valley
okay and we have Nora Academy joined us this year Oh at school and school yeah
so we're this is basically a young adult adult Trail okay um we're thinking of
doing a kitty cat trail and maybe the fall or next year it's children Juliana
yeah yeah because Meegan son has been with us from
the beginning they supported us when we asked for help and they they have always
helped us and now they always give us the cabaret theater so they they were
very big in helping us get authors for the trail and it's been nice and now we
talk with the authors who who join different clubs and things and they pass
them they come to us oh okay so so one of the big parts of the Connecticut
author trail for not the authors but the people attending is the passport program
so let's find out what it is how you can get involved and how it works okay our
passport similar to this okay this year we have
our our special logo that we're doing what this has in it is basically
everything that you would need to know to trip to travel along the trail okay
there's a map we have each library in order of appearance authors and it tells
a little bit about about them it has the the name the time in the and the place
and as you go through you you get your passport stamped in the back we have a
stamp area and so it each event and each other you will have ask you'll have a
stamp there I know you go there and you get it you get it stamped and at the end
in the finale we have some special treats that are going to be happening
but as you go along the passport is very important it also tells a little bit
about what about why we started and who who's there we have our supporters list
Oh excellent and I'm sure I need to have you need to have support to make an
event like this we do and and without these these people we wouldn't really
have have a trail because it everything is free everything that we do is free so
that was gonna be a next question for you is um what is the cost for this
nothing so anybody can attend any event at any library free of charge right
especially the finale I do like to try to get a lot of people at the finale
because when you can son does does so much for us that would be nice a nice
group that personality and that's our means
we're gonna take a quick break right now and then when we come back we're gonna
get into the details of some of the authors coming and when they're coming
and then we'll hear more about that finale stay tuned we'll be back after a
short break I've been delivering meals on wheels to Leon for 13 years it's
always a pleasure to see you Leon has definitely inspired me to put more into
my relationships he really cared for his wife who was ailing for quite a while in
such a touching way that inspired me to be a better person

welcome back to at your library today we've been talking about the Connecticut
author trail with Christine who is the coordinator for the event and we've
talked a little bit about what and when and now we're gonna talk about who so
the grinder public library is involved with the Connecticut author trail and on
August 1st we are gonna have author Tony Renzo knee Tony is the author of
Connecticut rock and roll which figures right in with our summer reading program
libraries Rock also we cannot forget to mention the mystic and no ink library
they're gonna be hosting Charles monoghan on July 16th and the bill
Memorial Library will be hosting M solder on September 7th now these are
just our three local libraries here in Groton and we know that there's 27 more
authors so Christine can you please tell us about a few of the other authors on
the trail this summer sure first I'll start with the one of my kick off
librarian the first one who is harmony Verna and she writes a fiction story
about its beneath the Apple leaf and it's it's very good I don't want to tell
you you have deer Haram in your her zoo week and then our finale is Amy bloom we
have who else say a little more later we have a few other authors that nan
Rossiter who has been on our trail before with an earlier book she's back
on we have I think you knew I do I you know that was a B Gonzalez I can
honestly tell you that this book of poetry is phenomenal so he is definitely
one not to miss and we are having our very first author on the trail in 2009
was Karen Olsen and she is actually going to be in Lebanon um in July she's
going to be speaking again I'm one of her newer books we try not to have too
many of repeat authors because we like to give as many people
chance as possible to be on the trail sometimes it just it just happens you
know the the libraries all choose their own author and from there we we create
the trail by its picking our times the authors I'm gonna just assume must
be from Connecticut yes okay so they must somehow connected to somehow kay
you said the libraries choose their own author yes how do they how would
libraries know if they if they don't let's say our library didn't know a
Connecticut author is there a place that they can go through you I create a list
okay um a lot of the authors contact me okay saying they would like to be on on
the trail so I create a list and I send it out to all the libraries who who may
need to look and see we libraries always have authors coming to us and asking if
they could do a talk right so a lot of a lot of times they network that way at
the finales I usually invite all the authors that were on the trail so
libraries can also talk to to them and try to get more programs that way for
other times of the year oh it's a complete system of network yet well
there's in libraries through absolutely and I know like me personally I'm a huge
author person I think books are amazing I think authors are wonderful and giving
me a plan for the summer of 30 different authors that I can pick and choose from
is very very exciting now you said you had 30 this year if you needed to grow
can you yes I already have another library who wants to be on it alright so
basically if you're a library if you have enough libraries you can match the
authors yes so yes so any libraries out there that would like to be part of the
Connecticut author Joe next year where can you find the information
specifically in the passport I know the authors are listed the dates and the
libraries now if you don't have a passport yet where do you go
wouldn't find out about it passports will probably become available the last
week of June beginning of July and where can you pick them up at participating
libraries that are on the trail and there's 30 so you there should be
hopefully one near you you can also go on to our website today get authors
Trail org okay so if you're not sure if your library's participating you can so
you can check the website and I was on the website earlier and I saw that
there's a lot of details and a lot of information yes you could see past
trails people on on past trails you can see our supporters list you can get a
copy of the poster a small you can make a download a small copy if you by chance
don't get a passport if the libraries are out and you still want to
participate you can take that poster along and just turn it over and have the
library stamp that that's excellent or you can hang the poster in your office
in your office and then you can know exactly when you have everywhere yes now
most importantly how much does it cost to go to the author events
it is absolutely free library programs are usually free and this is one that I
don't feel should ever be charged if I want to buy a book and meet the author
can I yes and they'll sign my book yes they will can I bring my book from home
yes you can bring influence so see this is a great opportunity if you've always
wanted to meet one of your favorite authors come out to the event it's
absolutely worth - trust me they last about an hour - well okay that was my
next query so you know and then the finale event is about that about that
long well I noticed that the book topics are very diverse yes we try we want to
make it for everybody okay we want everybody to come and enjoy a
nice evening out speaking with an author or topic that you might want to discuss
we encourage questions the authors are very personable and they and they like
to talk about their books of course and about themselves and why they did it and
it's it's a lot of fun and okay and I that you had mentioned in the past that
Connecticut humanities was involved Connecticut humanities is one of our
leading supporters we actually have one of the winners from last year's awards
that they are now doing so anybody who's any naked person who has written a book
is free to apply for an award that you know they they have an award that they
choose certain genres and then they then they pick an author off of that so
there's a lot of opportunities to get their books out there and and promoted
and that's it that's what we're trying to help authors do right you know is
it's seizing books and hopefully they they have more sales they have more
networking it's of you know different libraries to make sure that anybody can
have a book placed in their hands and they don't have to worry about any
limitations except having a library card right that's what's your library but I
think you know it's very important that all ages know that they can they can
have access to this and then it's a bonus when you can meet that all right
so all right toward ready for the most important information tell us about the
big finale okay Mohegan Sun cabaret on September 20th
Mohicans son has been our meheecan son and winning authors program has been a
major supporter from the very beginning they've encouraged us like I said
they've they've even offered authors for us this year we're having Amy bloom who
has just come out with her new her new book white house and it's a fun event we
opened the doors at 6:15 okay people can come in we have a little bit of
appetizers we're gonna have a birthday anniversary cake this year race and they
can mingle start talking with the authors because we invite all the
authors back okay and those who can attend that night come and they you can
either purchase books that you may not have had a chance to to purchased on the
trail or if you couldn't go to that author during the summer you can meet
them at the finale have my book signed yes absolutely all
right and then we we have the main author come up and she talks for a while
you can question you can it's a week try to keep it lively and and then that's it
for the evening you can have your book signed you can purchase a book and
square books is one of our be a big supporters of getting half for prizes
the pass so the more events that you go to through the summer okay and you have
your passport stamped when you come that evening of the finale you're given one
ticket and it's put in one of the level prizes so we have our top prizes Mohegan
Sun is given an overnight package we have the garde Arts is giving two
tickets to the to a performance we have cross sound ferry is giving us Long
Island Sound ferry tickets Wow and we have baskets of books there
should be about five baskets of all the author's donate a book so we make
baskets and then we pick five lucky people to do get a basket excellent
so you attend the author events you meet the authors you have your passport
stamped at a library you may or may not have ever visited and then you come to a
party with cake we're not Mohegan Sun for a chance to
win this excellent fun and it's all free and it's everything really and we like
to have as many people attend as possible excellent well if you have any
questions you can go to the website which is Connecticut authors trail org
which will be up on the program and or you can call the ground Public Library
here directly and we'll have information for
you thank you so much you thank you very much for table and I look forward to
seeing you in the Janus summer yes hopefully to you thank you again for
joining us this has been at your library thanks for checking
you
