Ask A Special Olympics Athlete - Duration: 2:55.

- Special Olympics USA Games and Microsoft

teamed up with KUOW to host Ask A Special Olympics Athlete,

a person-to-person conversation bringing together members

of the Puget Sound community with Special Olympics athletes.

(people murmuring)

- [Ben] You're Devon?

- Yes.

- I'm Ben.

- Nice to meet you.

- So what do you think people

should know about the Special Olympics?

- Put it this way, just 'cause we have a disability

doesn't mean we can't compete like everyone else.

- Come to a competition and watch.

See for yourself what people can do.

- And I get excited when they cheer me on.

- It's changed my life for the better,

and I am so thankful that I'm a part of it.

- [Woman] What was your life like before?

- It's always been a little uncertain,

trying to navigate the waters of life,

and so now with it I have much more confidence,

and I've been able to branch out

and just really be able to show what I offer,

not just from sports but from life.

- My coach gave my mom a phone call

that by the way, Rebekah was chosen for nationals.

- Yeah! - Like yeah!

Yes!

I like it when people actually

take time to listen to me, you know?

- What do you want people to learn

from having USA Games in Seattle?

- Acceptance and also that Special Olympics is

for all sorts of people with all sorts of disabilities,

and all sorts of abilities too.

It's not just one thing.

- I feel like I'm part of a team,

and that they see me for who I am and not my disability.

Growing up, I felt like an outsider,

and that no one wanted to sit by me

'cause I have Down syndrome.

But I kept all those negative vibes

and put it into this big motivation for myself,

so I can keep moving forward

and to change their view of what I was.

And then all of a sudden, Special Olympics came in,

and that gave me a real boost of confidence within myself,

and it became a family of friends, which I needed,

and that truly just changed my whole entire life.

- Look at us and what we can do, not by what we can't do.

Don't just jump to assumptions or conclusions just

because somebody has autism or Down syndrome or whatever.

- [Photographer] Awesome, thank you all.

(crew claps)

- [Rebekah] Look at what they can do

if you give 'em a chance.

- [Narrator] Come and cheer on the athletes

July first through the sixth

as they compete in the Special Olympics USA Games.

Canada set to impose $12B in tariffs on US - Duration: 0:45.

Canada has revealed retaliatory tariffs against U.S. duties on steel and aluminum.

They're set to go into place July 1.

The tariffs target things like ketchup, boats, toilet paper, dishwasher fluid, playing cards,

coffee and yogurt.

They'll total around $12.6 billion in U.S. goods.

Mexico, Turkey and the European Union have also announced tariffs in response to President

Donald Trump's import tax on steel and aluminum.

They mostly focus on goods produced in key Republican districts, such as bourbon in Senate

Majority Leader Mitch McConnell's Kentucky and Harley-Davidson motorcycles from House

Speaker Paul Ryan's Wisconsin.

Canadian officials said their tariffs were a "measured" response to President Trump's,

which they called "illegal."

Baby Zebrafish Eyes Work Kind of like Real-Time Photoshop - Duration: 5:22.

[ ♪ Intro ]

Zebrafish are basically aquatic lab rats.

They're a model organism that scientists use to study everything from development to disease,

in the carefully controlled environment of a fish tank.

Now, researchers are also looking into how these small, stripy minnows see, and they

published a paper about it last week in the journal Current Biology.

This study is the first detailed description of how vision works in a vertebrate that has

4 kinds of color photoreceptors, not a measly 3 like humans.

And they found that, as babies, these tiny fish have really precise vision that's more

than meets the eye.

In fact, it's tailored to the different parts of their environment.

See, zebrafish are naturally found in clear, slow-moving water in Asia.

They rely on their eyes to find their way around, hunt, and avoid getting eaten.

And baby zebrafish are like all eyes — their eyeballs make up a quarter of the total volume

of their bodies and contain half of the neurons in their central nervous system.

If our babies had similar proportions, their eyes would be like grapefruit sized.

This research focused on the retina, which is in the back of the eyeball where light-sensitive

photoreceptors are found.

There are two main types of photoreceptor cells: rods detect low levels of light but

don't really detect color, and cones work better at bright levels of light but can detect color.

In human retinas, rods and cones are pretty evenly distributed, except for a region called

the fovea where there are more cones and our vision is a little sharper.

But baby zebrafish retinas are more complicated.

While human retinas have 3 types of cones — one sensitive to red wavelengths of light,

one to green, and one to blue — zebrafish have a fourth that's sensitive to UV light.

And in their eyes, different photoreceptors are concentrated where they're needed most.

Baby zebrafish hang out in shallow water where death typically comes from above, whether

it's a heron or other predator silhouetted against the bright sky.

So the part of the retina that gets light from above has more rods, because they just

need to see if anything's coming — not what color it is.

Most colorful things, like rocks or plants, are in front of or below baby zebrafish.

So those areas of the retina have more cones, especially the ones sensitive to red, green,

and blue light.

But the single-celled microorganisms that baby zebrafish eat are translucent, which

makes them hard to see with those cones.

Except they do reflect a good amount of UV light.

So the parts of the retina getting light from the strike zone, which is just a cool term

researchers use for the horizon of the fish's vision, have more cones sensitive to UV light.

Basically, all these retinal regions chunk up the world, so different parts of the image

have boosted color or contrast like Photoshop manipulation of the world in real time.

And this probably plays a big role in helping them survive, otherwise they wouldn't have

evolved to be this way.

When baby zebrafish mature, though, they grow into their eyes, move into deeper water, and

kind of lose their vision superpowers.

Their retinas change to be more like ours, where different cones are redistributed in

a more even pattern.

But not all fish have good eyesight!

The baby whale fish sounds like a poorly named bathtub toy, and I guess it's kind of stubby

and cute and whale-like.

But unlike zebrafish, it lives in muddy rivers in Central Africa where visibility isn't so great.

So instead of relying on its eyes, it uses electricity to get around.

And according to new research published in the journal Current Biology last week, knowing

how these fish use electricity may give us insight into some serious human diseases.

Several species of fish use electricity to communicate and sense what's nearby, kind

of like echolocation.

And to do that, they have electric organs with specialized cells called electrocytes,

which can generate action potentials like muscle cells and nerve cells.

Action potentials occur when ions rapidly cross cell membranes and alter the electrical charge.

And when a whole bunch of electrocytes do this simultaneously, they can emit an electrical discharge.

But ions can't cross the cell membrane just anywhere.

They have to pass through special proteins called ion channels, which are like carefully

controlled doors.

Now, baby whale fish can generate extremely quick electric pulses that are only 2 ten

thousandths of a second long.

They have to keep it short so they can stay hidden from catfish, which can also sense

electricity and will totally eat them.

So these researchers wanted to know how baby whale fish make these extremely short action

potentials, so they took a closer look at the KCNA7 potassium ion channel.

Humans have this same protein in our heart and muscle tissues, but the baby whale fish

has a slightly different version.

The researchers discovered a negatively charged patch of amino acids in the fish's ion channel

that makes it more sensitive and able to open more quickly.

Understanding how slight differences in these ion channels affect how they work might someday

help scientists treat diseases like epilepsy, and certain heart rhythm and muscle disorders.

These conditions are linked with genetic mutations that also change how potassium ion channels work.

So maybe understanding this odd little fish will help scientists find a fix.

Bouncers Share Secrets About Getting Into Bars - Duration: 4:33.

- I would safely say, yeah,

my bull(beeping) detector is pretty good by now.

(laughing)

(upbeat music)

Telltale signs of an underage person,

typically you get the person who is very edgy

when they show up and they really don't know

exactly how things work,

and they're kind of just anxious for no reason,

and then, of course, they hesitantly hand your their ID,

and they kind of just sit there and smile.

- Oh, their body language.

Most people are pretty good at lying,

but their body isn't.

- When they're walking up,

they're, uh, here, and no eye contact.

Usually, I find that people will stand up straight

and they're like, yes, that's me,

and they'll look at the card,

whereas the other one will be like,

hey, yo, and kind of look away,

so I mean, those are just some of the signs.

(upbeat music)

- There's certain things on one ID that's real

that you won't find on a fake ID,

and vice versa.

- Some of the things we look for,

when we're looking for a fake ID

would definitely be laminated pieces of plastic

or pieces of paper that have absolutely zero traits

of an actual ID.

- Most IDs do have a special actual tag

that you can see in certain lighting.

- Here in California is if you have a light,

you have the California bear outlined in the back,

and if you hold it up,

you can see that outline,

whereas the fakes tend to not have it.

(upbeat music)

Well, actually, at my first job, in 2011, a couple,

either blatantly not recognizing their surroundings,

or deliberately not caring,

and starting to get it on while other people are around,

so I had to politely tell them,

"Hey, look, this is not the spot for that.

"I feel you, have a good time.

"Just move it on, take it elsewhere."

- I've seen a lot of people hook up.

Pretty much wherever they can it in,

seen that on, I would say, an everyday basis.

It's not really crazy anymore.

It's just the norm to me now.

(upbeat music)

- Starting a fight, and probably stripping,

just getting naked.

- Undermining the fact that we're here,

and we're doing a job, and we're here to do a job,

and making sure that you're allowing us to do so.

- Get out of line, and try to be aggressive with you

for no reason.

It does happen.

You get macho people,

whether it's women or men,

who just have a bad attitude,

and wanna take it out on you.

- Someone not having their forms of ID like they should,

and just trying to talk me up.

Oh, you're so handsome!

You're so cute!

It's like, um, appreciate the compliment,

but you know, I still need that form of ID,

if you don't mind.

- Honestly, pet names and things like that

are probably the easiest way to piss me off.

Oh, things like big boy, big John.

Accurate.

(laughing)

- First impressions, coming up to the door,

it'll always make a huge statement.

- Being polite.

You actually don't have to say much to a bouncer.

Just make sure you have your ID card.

- Probably just being prepared and not having

a bunch of assholes that you're with.

- Don't be getting out of line.

Just have a good time,

and don't be destructive or disruptive

and causing a scene.

(upbeat music)

- The best excuse I've ever gotten

for forgetting an ID was definitely

they said their dog ate it,

which we all know is a crock of shit.

- Literally the worst excuse you could say

is I forgot my ID.

There's no excuses for forgetting it.

Just bring it.

(jazz music)

Most likely not, but depending on the situation,

every situation is different,

and sometimes, it can be reevaluated

and possibly be let back in,

but in most instances, if you're escorted out,

you're not coming back in.

(upbeat music)

I would say the bull(beeping) detector that I have

is pretty on par, and you'd be lucky

if you get away with something.

- I would safely say, yeah, my bull(beeping) detector

is pretty good by now.

(laughing)

- I'm working on it!

I'm working on it,

but I'd like to think it's pretty good,

probably about a B+, A-,

but that's why we got my other security officer,

who's here for to help me,

when I may miss a certain thing,

they're here to pick me back up.

(jazz music)

- You could get to the front of the line,

as long as you had a pretty good standing relationship

with the person that was actually at the door.

- I plead the 5th on that.

(laughing)

- Any way to get to the front of the line

is if you know the owner.

That would pretty much be the only thing.

Everyone else is treated the exact same way here.

(upbeat music)

- For me, one of the best parts of the job

is the fact that I get to be around music,

people, I do like to dance and sing myself,

so being around the environment

is always good for me.

- Getting to meet new people in here,

and having them kind of trust in you

as a security guy, to say they that trust

that you're there to protect them,

you're gonna do the right things.

- Definitely the social interaction part of it,

making sure that you're meeting plenty of people

from all around the world,

but also being a part of keeping them safe, as well.

Celebs Who Confronted Their Interviewer On Live TV - Duration: 8:24.

One of the worst things about being in the spotlight is having to talk to the media.

Even if they're not all out to get you, interviews can break down privacy, asking questions that

can sometimes be invasive, off-base, or insulting.

It can be a lot for a person to handle, so it's no surprise that every once in a while,

a celebrity snaps on their interviewer.

Here are a few favorite examples of things getting awkward when guests turned the tables

on their interviewer.

Matt Damon

During a Save Our Schools rally in defense of public education, a reporter from libertarian

outlet ReasonTV asked Matt Damon — whose mother, a teacher, was standing right next

to him — a pointed question about teachers and tenure.

It was a setup to an argument that Damon didn't want to have.

"It's like saying a teacher will gonna get lazy when they have tenure.

A teacher wants to teach."

At that point, the cameraman jumped into the conversation, throwing out a bizarre claim

that "10 percent of teachers are bad."

At that point, Damon dropped all pretense of politeness.

"Where'd you get that number?"

"I dunno.

Ten percent of people in any profession maybe should think of something else."

"Yeah, OK.

Well, maybe you're a sh---y cameraman."

Solange Knowles

Solange was seven years into her music career when she was introduced with two references

to her "very famous" older sister on a Las Vegas Fox affiliate, and characterized as

someone who was just starting out instead of an experienced songwriter who'd been working

since her teens.

"I have to say, that was not a very professional introduction before."

"Please don't tie me into family and my brother-in-law's establishment."

Solange wasn't just annoyed by the way she was introduced to viewers.

She was also bothered by the way the pre-show talk had focused on her brother-in-law, Jay-Z,

and his 40/40 Club business.

But since that conversation hadn't been broadcast, her protest made things extra-confusing for

the viewers and anchors both.

"That wasn't live, Solange.

That wasn't on TV."

"OK."

"OK, well, whatever the case, we do apologize.

We're glad you're here with us this morning."

There's a lesson to be learned in how the singer stayed composed during the call-out:

Don't get mad — just make it awkward.

Tony Danza

Tony Danza didn't realize he was on the air via satellite when he began talking smack

about a local news show.

Sharing his misgivings about being sandwiched between "murder and mayhem", he thought he

was just talking to someone else in the room, not directly into the anchor's ear.

"Tony?"

"I'm telling ya, I just realized this, hearing the news show in the background.

You're always thinking you're doing one of those 'Good Morning' shows, but this is one

of those news shows."

The anchor tried to get his attention, but to no avail.

Hilariously, Danza just kept ranting and sipping his coffee as the anchor sat back, hearing

every word.

"You never know when people are listening to what you're saying, Tony."]

When Danza and the anchor finally connected, the actor stuck by his comments, characterizing

his own appearance as a puff piece between more depressing, serious news.

"You know, that's how I make my living, so you know."

"No, listen, I'm just saying you can't, just don't deny it, please."

Mel Gibson

Mel Gibson doesn't want to talk about his personal life.

Four years after a high-profile, profane arrest for drunk driving got him effectively blackballed

from show business, Gibson gave an interview about his work-in-progress professional comeback.

It didn't end well.

The anchor asked Gibson if he thought he was "a different person" after the events of the

years before, and something about the question set the actor off.

Instead of brushing it all off, Gibson made the interview into a drawn-out confrontation.

"That's almost four years ago, dude.

I mean, I've moved on, I guess you haven't."

Using exaggerated, clownish facial expressions, Gibson made it clear that his anti-Semitic

rant was the last thing he wanted to talk about.

And just in case his anger wasn't obvious, he ended the interview with an insult.

"Buh-bye.

Ass----."

Mariah Carey

In June 2017, Mariah Carey's former fiancée, billionaire James Packer, was being sought

by Israeli police for questioning.

Authorities were looking into gifts that may have been illegally provided by Carey's fiancée

to the Israeli Prime Minister.

That same month, Carey was in Israel to promote a skincare line when a reporter decided to

interrogate her about her ex's whereabouts.

Taking a chilled-out approach, Carey deflected every question.

The interviewer asked her to recall aspects of a dinner she'd had with her husband and

the prime minister, and all she could really think about in the moment was the food.

"They had some food there that was pretty good.

I mean, y'know."

Whether Carey was covering for her boyfriend or just didn't care, the interviewer was left

completely stonewalled.

The closest clue he got was that the man he was looking for was, quote, "somewhere, doing

something."

"I don't know where the motherf---er is.

How am I supposed to know?"

Emma Thompson

Media types are always trying to tie celebrities to the news of the day, and sometimes those

celebrities couldn't care less.

Emma Thompson let her royal wedding fatigue show during an interview with Sky TV, shutting

down an interviewer who would not stop asking about Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.

"Not a single thought in my head about it to share with you.

I'm so sorry.

I haven't even, it doesn't occur to me."

But her interviewer wouldn't drop the subject, asking Thompson if she had any well-wishes

for the prince and the Suits star on their big day.

The insistent line of questioning left the actress visibly irritated.

"Really, I have nothing to say about it."

"Really?"

"Do you wish them well?"

"Obviously, yes, but I don't know them".

It's a frustrating interaction to watch, because she couldn't have been more clear in her opinion.

It's a minute of life nobody involved will ever get back.

"Stop it, just stop it, okay?"

"Stop wasting my time."

Mayim Bialik

The Big Bang Theory star Mayim Bialik walked the red carpet at the Screen Actors Guild

Awards in 2014 and didn't hesitate to school an interviewer who questioned her intelligence.

Bialik's not just a smartypants on TV, she's also brilliant in real life, too, with another

gig as a neuroscientist.

Seriously — the woman is smart.

When a reporter asked Bialik if she could do calculus at the drop of a hat like her

onscreen counterpart, she was caught off guard, unexpectedly having to remind the viewers

that she studied calculus for years.

"Um, I actually was trained in calculus for several years.

I'm a neuroscientist, you may not have known that."

Trying to cover their tracks, the interviewers claimed they knew Bialik was "some kind of

scientist" — but come on.

Would you ask Bill Nye if he knew calculus?

Or would you just assume, as a scientist, that he could probably figure it out?

"She is actually is actually a neuroscientist.

She has been studying for this role her whole life."

"Exactly, yeah.

Well, actually, just for 12 years, but yeah."

Jennifer Lawrence

At the 2016 Golden Globes, Jennifer Lawrence brought down a world of criticism on herself

when she called out a reporter for looking at his phone while speaking to her.

"How did you see yourself…"

"You can't live your life behind your phone, bro.

You can't just do that.

You gotta live in the now."

The reporter apologized and tried to continue his question, asking the actress how she felt

about her chances for Oscar night.

Instead of answering the question, which she misunderstood, she chastised the interviewer,

thinking he was asking about the current awards show rather than a future one.

"We're at the Golden Globes.

If you put your phone down, you'd know that."

Lawrence was later criticized for being insensitive when the moment went viral.

Because the reporter spoke with a thick accent, many believed he may have been looking at

a translation on his phone.

For an actress who tries to come across as down-to-earth, it was a major diva move.

Helen Mirren

In 1975, decorated actor Helen Mirren was subjected to one of the most sexist interviews

ever with broadcaster Michael Parkinson, who referred to the Academy Award-winner as a

"sex queen".

It was offensive even at the time, but today?

It's jaw-dropping.

"Others have called her sensual, graceful, and the final accolade, and I quote, 'She

is especially telling in projecting sluttish eroticism.

She is Miss Helen Mirren!"

Instead of even attempting to put forth respectful questions, the interviewer asked the Royal

Shakespeare Company veteran if her "equipment" and "physical attributes" had a tendency to

hinder her acting.

In case the folks at home didn't get it, he also laser focused his eyes on her chest.

"Does that hinder you?

In your pursuit of the ambition of being a successful actress."

"A successful and serious actress, because serious actresses can't have big bosoms, is

that what you mean?"

The Dame Commander of the British Empire, who now has a Tony Award, three consecutive

BAFTA awards, and a 2,000-word Wikipedia article devoted solely to her acting accomplishments,

stayed classy, gentle, and above-the-fray during the outrageous interaction.

She even came back for another interview years later.

Now that's class, or great acting.

Or, you can access it through the Entity Relationship shape library.

Click on "shapes" in the top left corner of the editor, turn on the entity relationship

shape library, and then click save.

After closing the shape manager, you'll see the new shape library in the toolbox on

the left.

Below the standard import and export buttons, you'll see the "Salesforce Import" button.

When I click that button, I'm given the option to use some sample data Lucidchart

has provided or import from my own Salesforce instance.

I'm going to choose to import from Salesforce, and now I'm routed to a new tab where I'll

login to Salesforce.

After entering my username and password, the tab automatically closes and returns me to

the Lucidchart editor.

As you can see, a screen appears with all of my Salesforce objects present.

I can manually select which objects I'd like to display, select all at once, or even

search for specific objects.

Also, I can decide whether I want to only display the relationships or include object

details.

Choosing to "show only relationships" will only show me Primary Keys, Foreign Keys,

and other fields where key relationships are present.

Choosing to "show all object details" will show all fields related to that entity

(be aware that these can become quite large and even difficult to work with).

If you're only needing to work at a high level, we suggest using the relationships.

And that's what I'll select now.

Note that if you'd like to change this once you've already started building your Salesforce

ERD, simply click the Import Salesforce button from the toolbox, select "Import from Salesforce,"

select the objects you'd like to import, and select the new option you'd like.

Once you've done that, you'll be given the option to display your desired changes

on all the entities you've already placed on the canvas, or just have the changes display

as you drag and drop new entities onto the canvas.

Notice that as I drag and drop onto the canvas, any existing cardinality between entities

will automatically display.

Plus, I can make changes to any of these fields, tables, or cardinality as needed.

This is especially helpful when proposing hypothetical changes in the database and planning

for the future.

One more quick tip: Whenever you click on a table within your diagram, you'll be given

a series of options near the properties bar at the top.

You can choose to increase or decrease the number of fields displayed, insert or remove

a field anywhere in a table, and shade the header or alternate shading amongst rows for

increased clarity and readability.

in Confluence, Jira, Word docs or G-suite apps, and get helpful tips for working in

Lucidchart by checking out our other tutorial and integration videos.

And, as always, happy diagramming!

Free Bass VST Instrument Plugins and Synths - Duration: 4:22.

Hey guys, in this video we're going to take a look at some free bass VST instruments.

These are virtual instruments we can use to create a bass sound completely within a digital

audio workstation.

For this video, we'll be looking at all these plugins in Reaper, since it's a commonly

used home recording program, but we can also use these in different programs as well.

The first plugin we'll look at is Bassline by EVM.

First we have some presets we can choose from at the top.

This also has presets we can choose by going back and forth with the arrows on the plugin

itself.

I'll usually start with the D/Bass preset and make changes to that.

We have options for an acoustic bass, plucked bass, picked bass, electric bass, slap bass,

digital bass, and muted bass.

One of the main problems I have with this plugin is it's only creating a lot of really

low frequencies with most of the presets, to a point that it's barely even audible

on headphones, and the higher frequency information is completely absent.

To me, this plugin is good to create a really deep bass sound that you can even layer with

different bass recordings, but it shouldn't be used completely on its own.

Next is DSK BassZ.

This has a few different built in bass sounds that can be chosen at the top, and controls

for Envelope and Filter but you can get some usable sounds from the presets anyways.

Unfortunately, pressing the help button only links us to a broken page on DSK's website.

Some of the better bass sounds in this plugin come from the precision bass and Yamaha bass,

but some of the generic presets like the picked bass and acoustic bass don't actually sound

that great.

Next up we have VB-1, or virtual bass unit by Steinberg.

This plugin creates a very artificial bass sound, and there are a few different presets

we can start with, but they all sound a lot like a synth.

The first options we have are the position of the pickup and pick.

The pick creates a warmer sound as it moves up towards the neck and a brighter sound at

the bridge, and moving the pickup made no noticeable difference to me.

Setting the release really low lets the notes cut off immediately at the end, but increasing

it slightly allows them to blend together a little more.

Push it too far though and they start to overlap and interfere with each other.

The shape allows the sound to go from smooth to harsher with more attack and click to it.

With the damper at 100, we can get a really muted sound.

At 0 it's very bright and harsh, and I usually set it somewhere in between.

Finally, we have a volume control and a random button to randomly change all the settings

on the plugin.

The best free bass plugin I've found is the SI-Bass plugin included with Cakewalk

by BandLab.

After Cakewalk is installed with the SI-Instruments package, you can add this plugin to Reaper

by adding the scan path.

I'll put the scan path in the video description down below for anyone that wants to add it

to their program.

This plugin has a lot of features, starting with the different presets from the drop down

menu.

There's also built in basslines that we can drag and drop onto the instrument track,

and this does work properly in Reaper.

We have some options for tuning, slide time, poly or monophonic voice, and pickup selector

on the bass.

Down below, there are amp settings for volume, panning, bass, mid, and treble EQ, and finally

drive and compression.

I've found this plugin is really capable of making a convincing virtual bass sound.
