Hello, everybody. This is TylerPreston20. Tonight I'm with a special guest. Her name is Valentina Ortiz.
She's a feminist from Argentina and I'm going to interview her about feminism. How are you doing?
Hi, nice to be here!
Yeah, this is your first ever video in English right?
Right. First time.
I'll try to speak as slowly as possible so you can understand me, okay?
Great, thanks. I really appreciate it.
How long have you been on Youtube? Did you have any inspirations?
Ah, yes. I've been on Youtube like 3 years now. I think. Yes? I always come like for summers.
Yes. 3 years and I always watch a lot of Youtube videos. There's one in particular. Some like 5, 6, 7 years ago.
There's wasn't that many Youtube creators. And I was a follower of Dalas Review.
I'm dunno if you know him but that was like the first I've realized that I like to do that.
Like I was watching him and said: I really want to do that! But that was like my inspiration but not anything else.
All right. How long is preparation for each video? Do you have a script or do you do it off the fly?
Some videos came naturally. I put myself in front of a camera and just start talking.
And some other videos, yes, requires a lot of investigation and writing and stuff.
But I mean, it depends on the topic I was talking.
Okay and for your subject does it goes off the fly?
I always look at the things that make me feel something. Sadness or indignation.
It have to be a subject that really makes me feel some way.
How long have you been a feminist and lead you to become one?
Okay, I felt like I was a feminist my whole life because I grew up in a family that's the opposite of a traditional family.
My parents were divorced when I was like 2 years [old]. And my mom with another woman.
Like in a couple for like 6 years of my life. My mom always be a feminist.
And I think that like I grew up with feminism in me. But like when I start using internet and when I was a teenager
I was like more interested in those things. And some of my ways of thinking changed a lot.
What were the things you did not consider before?
I dunno. Things like that men can be oppressed too. I never thought about it.
I was like:
"okay, women in some point in history can't vote but men does.".
And that's why I thought like the only one who've being oppressed in some way were women.
But then I realized about. I dunno. I never thought about. I dunno what you call it.
A dad wants to be with his kids, with his children too when divorced.
They are forced in some countries to go to the war. I'm talking like a kid.
It makes sense. Don't worry about it. You sound good.
Okay.
All right. How do you define feminism? What's your definition?
I think a feminist is a person who realize about the ways of some discrimination against. It depends on the person you're talking to.
I think feminism is about women and that's why I consider myself as a MRA too.
But that it should be concerned about women's issues and do something about it.
Like not just like: "okay, I know this is happening but I'm not going to do anything about it."
But I think that feminism is for women but I don't think that feminism is enough.
I think like that's the tricky thing because I'm not just feminist, I consider myself an MRA too
because I get to realize that men have suffered a lot of oppression too and there have to be a movement who fight for them too.
Do you think both feminists and MRA's should team up together?
Parenthood problems, it have to be solved together. Because it cannot be that when a marriage gets a divorce.
Most of the cases, women, the mother, who take the children with her.
And I think that it's a man's issue. I think if it's a man's issue, I think that feminism and MRA's have to fight against that.
So what are your thoughts on women's issues in your country? Do you think women are treated the same as men or should be any improvements?
Yes. I think that legally, we are equal with men. We don't live in a "patriarchy" like a lot of people think.
I don't think so. I don't think we live in a patriarchy because the main difference between a patriarchy or a social community with some…
I dunno what you call it. Machista.
Yeah, yeah. Basically machismo is basically "male chauvinist".
There can be communities with that but it's not a patriarchy because the main difference between a patriarchy and that in a patriarchy
women have no…umm..What do you call it?
No rights?
Yes no rights but….no citizen rights, you know? Women are not considered citizens in a patriarchy.
We are not living in a patriarchy at all.
Do you think the Middle East, like Saudi Arabia, have a patriarchy?
Honestly I dunno that much about it. But I can consider it more patriarchy than Argentina, for example or United States.
I dunno. But if I'm completely honest, I dunno that much to make a…
A judgement.
Yeah.
To make a judgement. Okay, all right. What's your thoughts on the issue of abortion?
In my country, we've legalized it since the 1970's however there are some people in power like the Republicans
who want to restrict it. Is the situation the same in Argentina?
In Argentina right now, abortion is illegal. We were fight for that like these past months. Maybe you've seen it.
They are talking and…I dunno the name in English.
But the vote yes and now they have to be in another senado…Senado.
Wait. The senate to see if they approve it or not. I'm personally in favor of abortion.
Not in abortion. I'm in favor in legalization of abortion.
Yeah It kind of sounded bad at first, you know.
Okay. You understand me.
Yeah, I understand. What's your opinion on the wage gap? Many feminists claim they get less money because of their gender and what's your thoughts about it?
That's not true at all, at least not in Argentina and not in Spain, for example. I dunno how it works here (United States).
But in Argentina, it's not true. Just not true. Because the thing is that we women earn less than men but not for the same job.
The thing is women are maybe working less hours than men because they are with their children or whatever
or that women usually choose that doesn't make that much money.
I mean most women doesn't study [to be] engineers, that stuff. You go to engineer university in Argentina and you almost see no women.
Like, it's all man. Like, okay, yes, there's women of course. But not even a half. Women earn less than men but not for the same job.
What's your thoughts on PC in college campus culture. Do you think there's room for improvement?
Honestly I think it's going to worse every time. I can see and I can notice more censorship time to time.
Like maybe I was younger and I didn't realize but now I'm realizing that that yes, a lot of people try to silence people that thinks different than them
and even if you don't like what other people are saying, you have to let them talk.
I mean, it's free speech, right?
All right, thanks for coming on! This is Valentina Ortiz. If you wanna check out her Youtube channel, her Youtube channel is the same as your name, right?
Yes.
Okay and what's your social media accounts?
My social media accounts on Twitter is like @Hiiiipstah. And that's enough.
