Hello.
Hello.
This week we decided to show you guys
the behind the scenes of the challenge of building our own Tiny Shipping Container House.
And also to have a Youtube channel at the same time.
So?
Let's get started.
a young couple
building their own
Tiny Shipping Container House
Produced by
new episode every Monday
make sure to subscribe
No, we didn't finish the ceiling insulation on time.
So, we decided to ask you guys what you want to watch.
Yeah. Basically we asked on Instagram and on Youtube.
If you would prefer number 1, first option,
a behind the scenes of what we do.
And number 2 was a Live Q&A.
And the final result
is this one.
So, that means today we're gonna see a behind the scenes of
what's like to be on Odd Life Crafting for 2 weeks.
That's pretty cool.
So, the way this is gonna work we're gonna go day by day
on our week, I mean on 2 weeks to show you
how much we spend, how much afford we put in each one of the tasks.
This means building and this means planning, this means going to stores, this means editing videos,
creating a second channel... everything we have done in 2 weeks.
So, we're gonna start on the day we posted episode 31.
That means June 4th.
It was the first day that the companies actually were delivering material after the strike they had
the truckers strike. You guys know about it.
So, we got the beams
to cut... you know the woods for the beams for the ceiling.
So the plan was to come and to get the beams really to install it the next day, right?
Yeah.
But once we got here what was wrong?
Yeah. They were not on the same size.
Yeah. As usual we didn't go to the you know wood shop to... the store to choose wood by wood.
We've just ordered by phone.
And then the hight of each joist was not exactly the same.
It was like really really...
We have like almost 5 millimiters of difference.
Oh, we have like 5 millimeters, like half centimeter in hight and that would work, the plan wouldn't work.
So, we... after discussing for 1 hour we had 2 choices.
Choice 1.
1 was to buy a planner to plain it by hand.
The choice 1: buy a hand planner and do all by hand.
And that would be like 2 days of work I think, if we did it right.
If we could get it right. I'm not even sure we... if we could get it right.
And second choice.
To take the wood and then...
Seek for help.
Yeah.
Seek for help.
Yeah. We have a good friend, that's my dad's friend.
He builds furniture out of wood for I don't know 35 years and his workshop is just
amazing.
So basically we had the choice of going to his wood shop,
wood working shop and get like you know his big planers and all his big machines
and plane the wood and get it sanded to the right dimensions.
But the problem was how to take..
Transport.
Yeah.
So basically we needed to transport the wood all the way there and
we needed either to pay someone to take the wood because our car won't fit the wood we needed to take.
Or second choice we needed to buy a support for the roof of our car so we could take it ourselves.
And we did that.
We did that.
So we went to the store we wasted like 1 and a half hours just to buy
you know the support.
And then we came back to the site, got the joist put it on the car and went to his shop.
So basically in his shop the first thing we did
was to plane one of the sides of each joist.
And with one side planed we went to the table saw, his good table saw.
And with the help of someone that works with him, because I don't know his machines,
we cut the other side and then we had a squared joist, that's it.
Perfect.
But as we were there already and he had such good machines and his sanding machine is just amazing...
You know... he has a huge sanding machine
that at the same time sands with grain 60 and with grain 120.
So it's 60 plus 120 in one go.
Basically it goes through and in the end it's perfect already.
So as we were late for the next week's episode we decided to use his machine and to come back after that.
It was night, we could just go home and do it the next day.
But if we did that we believe the risk of warping
the joist would be bigger.
Because we've just cut and once you cut the wood
you know you change the structure of the material and then it warps really easy.
And if we seal the wood with stain we believe that it absorves less water and loose less water.
That means it's more stable and won't warp that much.
So we worked through the night.
We took a night shift until 10 o'clock at night.
We cut the wood on length and...
and then we applied stain.
And 10 at night we were tired so we decided to go home.
But first we had one more thing to do when we got home.
One important key
thing that we always do
is to get home and first thing when we get home is to put all the footages we shot during the day
into the computer and give names to each one of the files
and delete ones that we know we are not gonna use, that are not that many actually.
So that's the ritual, otherwise when I need to edit I cannot find any file.
Meanwhile I do like a diary about what we did on that day.
Yeah. And that's how we managed to do this, to shot this today.
Because she has all the you know the log.
She has a log where she writes everything that happen during the day.
While I named the files.
So that comes to the end of the first day.
Yeah.
That's a long first day.
So, June 5th.
Let me see.
We need to read it from somewhere because it's too much to remember you know. Too much things we did.
So we forgot actually to mention June 4th we also recorded a introduction video
for our secondary channel. Secondary channel...
It's Um PAR Incomum.
Yeah. You might know we have a secondary channel in Portuguese,
so we shot the day before the introduction.
And June 5th was raining a lot.
So we decided to take the day to stay at home and work all day long editing.
That was from 9 to 10 at night.
Yeah. So it was from 9 AM to 10PM.
That's a long editing day.
Yeah. But we stopped sometimes.
We went to a store to buy a plywood for the ceiling panels.
After lunch, yeah.
After lunch we took a break and went to the store to buy a plywood.
And we stopped to eat some snacks and to watch some Youtube channels.
Yeah. That's the perk of having a Youtube channel and you know being your own boss.
Is that you know... when you work at home you can have snacks
you can take a break for watching someone else's channel
because you need inspiration and when we watch you know...
we watch everyone's channel we get inspiration from it.
And we can drink some coffee.
Yeah. Coffee all the time, a lot of coffee.
So that's basically what we did on June 5th.
It was editing and we went to the store to buy a plywood.
That's it, right?
And we did like the logo for the other channel also.
Because that's a lot of work to try to create is just...
you know stressing because we are not designers but we do our best.
So, June 6th now.
Well, as usual this day we stayed at home editing until 10AM, 10:30.
Because before that the traffic early morning is really really bad.
Yeah. We decided that instead of you know taking one hour to get to the site every morning
we go always late and we stay until later working.
And we use this time in the morning, early morning to answer emails and to edit if we have something to edit.
So...
What did we do this day? When we got to site 10:30... yeah, 10:30 we got to site.
The plywood arrived.
Yeah. The plywood arrived.
So the plan was to do an episode about the joist
and the week after we would do an episode about the panel itself.
But we realized that if we do the joist first the panel wouldn't go... wouldn't fit on place.
So that means that we needed to do the episode about the panel first.
So... yeah, it was a little bit to late to change our minds.
So that means that we decided to you know...
switch one episode to the other.
And that we had now only 4 and a half days to build the panels
to shoot the episode and edit the episode on time.
And that's tricky.
But we kind of did it.
Yeah. But...
You know... someone said one day to me that when things are wrong
they are never wrong enough, I mean like... It can always get worse.
We started building the panels, right?
And we realized that actually
we didn't have the right screws for that. We cut the wood and after we cut the wood I was like...
dammit.
We don't have the screws.
So we need to leave the site, drive to the store again, buy screws,
come back and then we finally finished the first... right? No the 3... all 3.
No, the 3 panels. We did the 3 on the same time.
So, after we managed to finish the first panels we went home and of course
we needed to name the footages as usual.
So, June 7th we woke up, we edited for 2 hours, we had early lunch at home and then we arrived to site
we cut the first pieces of laminated
to you know... glue on the top of these ceiling panels.
We glued the first one and we thought we were gonna glued all 3 at the first day.
And then we realized of course we don't have enough space to glue all at the same time.
And we did a mistake.
We also
calculated wrong the amount of laminated and we forgot one piece of laminated.
So that means we finish gluing the first one and we drove to the store, that's like 20 minutes away,
and then we got the laminated we needed, we went to a second store bought some wiring tubes
for the lights that we are gonna have on the panels.
And then we went back home to edit a little bit.
So back home we edit for 4 hours as we had time and we had already footage for the next episode.
Back home we edited it until 10 at night.
And went to bed tired.
Of course we watched one episode of the favorite series we've been watching, but...
you know, just one episode won't kill anyone and we went to bed.
Next day... Friday the 8th.
Well, the day started with a raw script for 32, 32nd episode.
32nd episode. What we do... we don't you know... Everything we are talking is not script all the way
but we need to have a scrip to know what we are gonna go through.
So usually we take like 2 hours to you know write all the ideas down.
These notes.
And checking the images we have.
So, it's like a raw script.
Friday we start with the script and then we went to the site
to record... as we've changed the episode we had not to much time to you know...
get a fancy episode.
So we came to the site record what we needed to record and went back home.
Back home we edited for...
8 hours.
So that was a long editing day.
But it's necessary because it was Friday already and we had 2 days to finish the episode.
And the weekend was gonna be a busy weekend, so..
Well.
Saturday was a long long day.
We started by editing for straight 9 hours.
I mean with break for food of course... we always have coffee and snacks and eat lunch.
And then 6 o'clock we drove 1 hour away to another city
because there was the
party... like a... how do we say? Like...
A launch?
Launch? Yeah.
We have a friend that just launch his Youtube channel. He's building a sailboat.
And he had like a big party on the yard, just to you know...
tell everyone that he has a Youtube channel now. So we went to his party and we stayed there until 12 o'clock
at night, like midnight.
And then we drove 1 hour back.
And then...
But at this point we were really really late for the episode of... Monday episode.
So we decided that we're gonna take shifts.
That means I edited from 1 in the morning until 5 in the morning,
went to bed, she woke up at like 7:30...
So, Sunday the 10th.
I did the subtitles, because I do the subtitles in English, Portuguese and Spanish.
While I slept, because you know... I edited until 5 in the morning, I needed to rest.
And I did the descriptions and everything.
And we managed to finished everything Sunday by 12 o'clock, at lunch time.
And of course we came back to site to work a little bit more because if we have time we need to you know...
get things moving.
But the worst thing is we finished editing the episode lunch time Sunday.
But we didn't finish building everything we had on the episode.
Let's fix that.
The episode was about the you know the ceiling panel
we have 3 ceiling panels in this episode but we've just built one finishing... one all the way to the end.
So we still had 2 panels to glue the laminated and to trim.
So we came back to site and we glued a second laminated and we got good news. Really cool good news.
A really good friends of us they've just discovered that they are gonna have kids.
So Sunday... we haven't hang out with our friends that much in the past months
we've just been working working and working on the construction.
So with a good news like that we went to have some pizza with our friends of course.
It's supposed to be a secret, but ok.
Half of the world is knowing now.
They don't know who they are.
Yeah. No one knows that, just the close friends know yet.
Well, I'm sorry.
I'm the one with a big mouth as Brazilians say.
We didn't give names.
Yeah. We have friends that are gonna have kids but you don't know who they are.
So we went to have pizza with our friends.
So we got home after the pizza and we
got all the post ready, you know the blog post and everything.
And with an extra actually.
Now we decided that our Patreons we always try to post the video for them one day before.
So we post the video, instead of Monday we post Sunday for the Patreons.
So we got home back from the pizza and we needed to write the blog post explaining everything.
And we needed to post the episode for the Patreons.
And that brings us to next Monday.
That is June 11th.
Monday is always happy for us.
It's a happy day.
Monday is an exciting day.
Monday is the day that everything happens. Is the day that we got to you know...
try out our new video.
Because it's really cool that you work so hard in a video, so so many hours and Monday is the day that we
kind of get the response from people. We get the feedback of what people think.
If they like it, if it's too short, if it's too long.
Usually too long.
If I talk too much.
Usually I do talk too much.
If she talks too little.
She usually talks too little.
But...
We also get like you know like... good responses on if the technique we are using is right,
if we are using the right tools.
If we are using the right solution, if the solution is really bad, if the solution is terrible.
And this Monday was one of those days.
Let's be honest.
I mean... this Monday was when everything changed. Right?
Yeah.
We did an episode about the panel.
And a lot of people commented
and said that the panel was not a 100% the right solution and this and you know...
all this information.
We still could have condensation on the ceiling.
And we also received the video that we showed you last week about our friend's problem with condensation.
So after that we got scared.
So Monday was a long day for my mind, like... my head.
Because we got home, back home...
after trying to work during the day
and I couldn't sleep because I was just searching and searching and searching for a better solution
for condensation problems.
Until 3AM.
Yeah. So I stayed up until almost 3 in the morning trying to find a solution.
And I couldn't.
So the next day, instead of coming to work...
That is already June 12th.
So Tuesday the 12th
we didn't come to work.
Because sometimes you need to stop and think about what you are doing.
And we searched for a solution all day long.
Basically we searched on Youtube videos, on blogs...
We called stores.
We called factories.
We called friends, we called anyone you can imagine.
Until we decided to call Robert, the one that we mentioned already on the last episode.
Our friend from... new friend. Robert is pretty cool.
We called Robert in Canada and I spent with him 3 hours basically... until 10 at night, 10PM
trying to find a solution and after we hang out 10PM we thought:
That's good. We know the solution we're gonna use now.
The solution is done.
And that... I went to bed like happy this day. You know like...
"Now I can go to bed and tomorrow we start fresh working on the new solution".
So, June 13th.
Well. Frst sorry, we've changed location,
if the light was really bad on the past 10 minutes
we didn't see it. We just saw it too late.
But let's start with June 13th.
We went to a store.
Yeah. It was an exciting day because we finally were happy with the solution
and now we would just gonna buy the supplies we need and you know...
Start working.
That's pretty cool. What did you buy?
We bought the rubber painting.
The undercoating for the ceiling.
Yeah. So we bought undercoating and we also bought...
Mosquito net, bug nets... so we could put it on the ventilation of the shipping container.
And we came back, started applying these mosquitos nets on the ventilations.
And then we gave 2 coats of undercoating on the ceiling and 2 coats on the panels.
That was a lot of work but it was quick and paint was really easy to apply. It was really good.
And we liked the result.
So after that we went home to study.
But first dinner at Duca's mom's house.
Because we need to stop and study also.
We needed to find a solution to cut styrofoam.
Because we were gonna use styrofoam.
So we took a few hours to study about styrofoam.
That brings us to the next day.
Thursday was a long day.
I mean a pretty long day.
We...
The challenge was to cut styrofoam, right?
Yeah.
We decided to give a try first using a hot knife.
Big hot knife.
Yeah. It works.
It works, but it's tricky.
Takes a long time.
First...
Took a while until we could get a good enough fire to start doing it.
We are not pros.
And once we... yeah, once we got enough fire to you know get the knife hot
we cut the first one... and that took us over an hour just to do one piece of styrofoam.
And the cut is not beautiful.
The cut is not straight and we took like one hour to do a you know bad cut.
And we had 12 pieces to cut.
So we gave up.
We decided that we should go with the solution everyone talks about that's hot wire.
So we decided to go to the store and buy all the supplies.
So we drove downtown, went to the store, bought all the supplies to build a hot wire cutting device.
And then we came back.
Built the system.
And of course... I don't understand about electronics.
And I did the wiring wrong.
And in the beginning it was warming up, the wire was fine, but then start making smoke on the transformer.
And I was like: "wow, wow, smoke. Turn it off!!".
So we turned it off and we thought we burnt out the transformer.
So we went downtown again.
We drove downtown again.
We went to the store, the guys in the store ran some tests with the transformer.
Luckily.
We didn't burnt it.
So, that's good, right?
So we bought a new wire, because we burnt out the wire also.
We came back and you know built the whole system again.
And it did work for a while.
It was really good.
Until...
We actually burnt the transformer.
For real now.
And we were like almost finishing the job and we burnt the transformer. So we needed to...
you know, go... kind of old school.
We went to the circular saw.
Did some cuts with the circular saw.
And then other cuts the circular saw is too small, we needed to use some hand saws.
Like 2 kinds of hand saws.
And by the end of the day....
We were really dirty.
Dirty and we cut all we needed. Actually we did finished all the...
I mean, that was pretty good.
So after we finished cutting all the foam
it was time to go home.
And that's when we realized that once again we wouldn't finish an episode on time.
So we needed to come up with an idea.
And I think we got a good idea that was to divide this episode into 2 parts.
A theoretical part and a practical part.
So back home we spent another 2 hours writing down the script
to shoot an extra video about the theory behind condensation.
And that's what we did on next day.
So Friday 15th...
started with us shooting the video for the episode 33.
Plus 7 hours of editing.
Yeah, there is... when we shoot audio, like this...
we always have long editing hours right afterwards. So you know...
everything we shot is fresh in our minds so it's easier do edit it.
So we shot it in the morning, went back home straight, had lunch and 7 hours of editing.
Saturday, the 16th of June.
We started by editing for like 3 hours.
And then we had my dad's birthday celebration lunch for mostly of the afternoon.
And we went back home for another 5 hours...
of editing.
Yeah. So we edited for another 5 hours until we finished the episode 33.
And put it on Youtube.
Yeah. Because it takes a while until it upload.
So we need to finish it usually by Saturday night so we can upload during the night and in the morning
she can wake up to do subtitles while I rest a little bit.
Because Sunday is my day of sleeping a little bit more. Not that much but a little bit more.
So, Sunday 17th. What did we do?
You slept.
Yeah. Sunday is the day I sleep. It's just the way it is, I need one day to rest a little bit more.
And I was doing the subtitles during Sunday morning.
As usual.
That's a classical Sunday.
I sleep a little bit over, she does the subtitles, because that's just her job, not my job.
So after that we had?
Lunch with my parents because it was my dad's birthday party.
Yeah, that's right. Even tough her dad is much older than my dad they were born in the same week.
So we have both... you know...
Celebrations at the same time, usually.
And then it was the first game of Brazil in the World Cup.
Yeah. We didn't watch the World Cup.
We came to work. We didn't have many hours left so...
All we could do was just to cut the styrofoam so we could insert the tube for the wiring of the lights.
That's basically what we did, right?
Yeah, I think so.
And then we went back home and again we wrote the blog post for our Patreons
and we posted the episode in advance, exclusively for the Patreons.
And you know...
Monday.
We got some rest because next day would be Monday and Monday is always exciting.
It seems like we are joking but Monday is a really exciting day. It's just you know...
The day to know how well the video is gonna be. And it's pretty cool.
And sometimes... usually we know new people on Monday.
Yeah.
Monday is the day that we have all the interaction with you know the subscribers
and people that really watch our channel
and want to help...
Monday is when most things happen and then the...
amount of comments during the week starts to slow down until next Monday.
So it's like:
Monday
Monday
It;s pretty cool.
I like it.
Monday 18th.
Well.
We posted of course episode number 33.
And as we knew is gonna happen... it was a theoretical episode about condensation,
a lot of controversy.
A lot of people with different opinions.
And we had a lot of responses.
A lot of comments.
A lot of good and positive you know comments trying to help us.
And that's pretty cool.
And that's when you know...
everything started changing again.
We had one really cool comment, that's this one.
"a solution wil come, you are doing so great, I have enjoyed your journey"
And guess what? Someone sent us a private message.
And a good one.
He was just telling us about a new product that I've never heard of it.
And the best thing:
it's a substitute for spray foam and it's made in Brazil.
That means we can buy it.
"I knew a solution would show itself soon..."
And that's pretty cool! We decided to call up the company, the factory
and the conversation let's say was really good.
They are not gonna give us for free, that's not the point.
But they gave us a really good price so we can use on our house.
Even tough it's way cheaper than we thought.
Yeah. It was cheaper, I mean it's more expensive than PET wool that we wanted to use.
It's a little bit more expensive.
But it seems like a much much better product.
But there is one problem.
It's gonna take 5 days until they send us the product.
That means that everything we've planned...
changed again.
Changed again.
And that's the reason why we have this episode instead of what you were supposed to watch today.
It's because we just couldn't make it on time because we just don't even have the product here.
So we are still waiting for them.
And while that... we wait for that we're just you know talking to you guys.
What do you think?
I think we talked about... too much ab... today, right?
Yeah, as usual.
I'm already like changing words.
It's just like...
We're talking for too long.
So I guess that's it.
Yeah, I guess we see you guys next Monday.
Yeah, hopefully by next Monday we're gonna get the material we need
and we're gonna do the insulation to show you guys.
If not we're gonna find someone else, something else...
About... to talk about...
I'm just getting crazy.
Yeah. We need to stop.
Yeah. That's it. I'm gonna quit right now and see you guys
next Monday.
