One of the key subjects that still needs to be addressed when it comes to North Korea

is medical assistance.

According to a foundation that works closely with the North, tuberculosis is a more serious

issue in the country than malnutrition.

Park Hee-jun reports.

One thing North Korea needs desperately, but which has received too little attention,...

is medical assistance.

The Eugene Bell Foundation has been working with Pyongyang since the 1990s to fulfill

the humanitarian needs of the North Korean people.

The foundation aims to eradicate tuberculosis, which has become resistant to drugs,... a

dire issue that requires international attention.

"Tuberculosis is North Korea's number 1, 2, 3 biggest health challenge.

I think it far outstrips any other disease, and arguably even concerns for malnutrition,

because it's an air borne infection.

And it can go dormant and become active decades after someone actually contracts it."

An estimated 8-thousand North Koreans contract multi-drug resistant TB every year.

The foundation has been treating about 15 percent of them, and the Global Fund 5 percent

-- which leaves some 80 percent unaccounted for.

But at present, there's not much that can be done.

Global organizations have had to pull out of North Korea amid tensions on the Korean

Peninsula and the enforcement of international sanctions.

"The latest sanctions, for instance, prohibits metal, and a lot of states have interpreted

that as anything that contains metal.

So the latest sanctions have thrown the whole series of normal regular humanitarian related

items in to question.

And some organizations are just not willing to take that risk."

If tuberculosis isn't treated, it will only spread.

Regardless of the obstacles that now exist, Dr. Linton believes that humanitarian problems

like TB should not be sidelined by politics.

"If they have a serious, life-threatening humanitarian issue that you can deal with

in a transparent manner,... making your treatment of that particular problem, subject of their

political consideration on their part, I think, is out of line.

So there should be a dual track system, where basic needs are met regardless of political

or military tension."

And according to Dr. Linton,... North Koreans are very determined to go ahead.

He says humanitarian assistance is likely to bring great benefits to them,... much more

than the easing or lifting of economic sanctions.

Change Your Attitude Change Your Life | Your Attitude Matters | Motivational Video - Duration: 10:02.

So the world is perfect, now what becomes important is our inner world and the

first thing to consider in this inner world is the attitude. the attitude we

keep towards the outer world gives us the experience of happiness and distress

Our attitude you don't believe let me give you a

example!

Two patients were admitted in a hospital ward, they were in the same room both of

them were bedridden. One's bed was by the side of the window every day for one

hour he would be made to sit up so that the fluid in his lungs would drain out

he was critically ill the other patients bed was away from the window he had to

remain bedridden lying down. Since the two were together day and night they became

good friends they talked about their childhood their likes and dislikes their

youth teen years their jobs bosses spouses everything under the Sun a great

bond the friendship developed between the two of them for the one hour that

the first patient would sit he could see outside the window of that hospital ward

which was practically like a cell for these patients and seeing at the

beautiful world he would describe the wonderful scenery to his friend there

was a garden by the side a fountain existed in the center of the garden

it had a Ledge people would come and sit there and speak with mirth and frolic

little children would come and play old couples would sit there basking in the

Sun young lovers would walk hand-in-hand ducks and geese would also make their

way there to make it all a merry scene when the first patient described this

the second patient would be thrilled he would watch the world through the eyes

of his friend. He began looking forward to the one hour when his friend would

see outside and describe what he saw. He began relishing the beauty of the outer

world sharing the vision of his friend However one day an evil thought crept

into the second patient's mind. Why does this guy get to have all the fun?

why is God unfair and why can I not see what he can see? He allowed that thought

to remain in the mind and as happens with thoughts

it started festering until it created the wound inside until his whole

attitude got affected and he started burning with envy that grew into hatred

for his friend, this guy's so lucky I hate him!

One night the first patient started coughing it was a different kind of

cough as if he was getting suffocated finding it difficult to breathe the

obvious right thing would have been to reach out for the emergency Bell and

press it but he was so distraught with the pain that the thought did not come

to him. The proper thing for his friend would have been to press his emergency

Bell but the friend was so consumed with resentment he said he's suffering let

him suffer serves him right for being such a bad person

The first patient coughed a few times and then he was quiet. In the morning the

nurse came saw what had happened without a fuss the dead body was moved

away. Nobody was the wiser of what had transpired at night in the second

patient's mind. He allowed a few days to go by and then he made a request now I'm

a little healthier can my bed be moved to the side of the window they said

surely, he was moved there. He said can I sit up for a while they said why not

they made him set up and he had the opportunity to look out of the window as

his friend would look but all he saw was the wall of the neighboring building. He

was astonished he was disappointed he said what is this they said this is the

warehouse that is by the side of our Hospital it's pretty big that is why our

window oversees it he said what is it that the other patient used to see and

described to me

he said that was his attitude that was the beauty of his inner world that he

was sharing with you. As the saying goes two men looked out from the prison bars

one saw the mud and the other saw the stars. We all have our attitudes and in

those attitudes we experience happiness or distress. When there was the flooding

in Uttaranchal

the TV crew was covering now they are concerned with their here our TRP points

and GRP points etc so bad news is the only news. As they say that if a dog

bites man it is not news if man bites dog it is news so they were interviewing

somebody what happened what was your loss. Oh!! my house got destroyed and and then

they came to this lady. What is your problem? She said nothing at all and

thanking God nothing has gotten destroyed no my houses mean washed away

really and you're not miserable. No because my husband is alive my

children are alive I'm thanking God for his Grace's

I was seeing these interviews and I said look what a difference in the attitudes

These attitudes we keep is not created by God, don't blame others for it take

responsibility for your attitude. Your attitude is in your hands.

Choose the proper attitude!

Two Techniques To Improve Dialogue by Christine Conradt - Duration: 3:58.

Film Courage: Do you believe in screenplay structure?

Christine Conradt, screenwriter: I do.

I believe in the three-act structure.

I believe in learning the rules so you can then break the rules but there is an acceptable

structure to storytelling and there is a reason it works and I think if you can get really

good at that, so good that then you can manipulate it then that serves you.

Film Courage: What was one of the first books on screenwriting that you read?

Christine: I think the Syd Field book because it was required reading at USC film school

but it's still a fantastic book and I think I actually still have it in my library.

Film Courage: When you are writing dialogue are your rules for it the same or it really

depends because of the character or the producer (you know what they want)?

Christine: It depends.

Yeah, a lot of it is what the producer wants.

But a lot of it is just finding the character's voice.

One of the mistakes screenwriters make is that all the characters sound exactly alike.

You should be able to block out the character name and know who is talking.

And you can learn a lot about how people speak just by sort of listening, listening in coffee

shops by how people talk.

People are rarely very self-reflective.

People rarely say exactly what they mean.

People rarely talk in complete sentences.

And so the words we use choose and so when you think about when you go to say something

there are probably a hundred different ways you can think of to say it.

Why are you choosing the particular way to say it and when you start to think like that…and

why your character is choosing to say something that way and what they really don't want

to reveal like why will they go to this length but they won't go just a little bit more

vulnerable.

When you kind of understand that about your characters then I think writing the dialogue

becomes easier.

But you have to put that thought process in to it.

To know what they want to conceal and what they want to give, I think.

And then you can start working with the subtext, the kind of stuff that makes all of that flavor

kind of come out.

Film Courage: Would you say that the productions or the networks that you are writing for are

heavy on dialogue?

Just because I mean the nature of women, we tend to talk more (especially with other women)

that's more…we kind of get together and talk and it's heavy dialogue.

Christine: I think…well the genres tend to be heavier on dialogue.

I think also when you are doing a very contained, like low-budget that has a lot to do with

it too because a lot of times the people are sitting and talking, you're in a room, you're

in a house or whatever so you are sitting and talking.

But I think making sure that that pacing is good so it really doesn't feel like people

explaining things.

That's kind of the death of dialogue is when people over-explain and they don't

know how to weave in that exposition kind of nicely.

Then it really just kind of like hangs there that's not good writing.

So hopefully there's not too much of that you're watching on television when you're

watching that.

Film Courage: Well just when you said the tone of the culture has changed, has the tone

of conversation and how you word it change?

Christine: Yeah, I think it has.

I think that, I think that it's less than it used to be because I think people want

things to happen very quickly.

Like the 2-minute video versus the 7-minute video, so they want to get through this ad

the pacing has to be much more quick than it used to be so scenes are shorter so you

get to the point much more quickly.

I think that has changed over time.

"Permit Patty" Calls the Cops on an Eight-Year-Old Girl | The Daily Show - Duration: 5:07.

This weekend was the first weekend of summer,

and you know what that means.

Same thing as every weekend--

white women were calling 911 on black people.

WOMAN: This morning a California woman is facing outrage online

after a now viral video shows her allegedly calling police

on an eight-year-old black girl selling bottles of water

with her mother on a sidewalk.

WOMAN: She calling police on an eight-year-old little girl.

You can hide all you want.

Yeah, and, um, illegally selling water without a permit?

MAN: The woman, identified as Alison Ettel,

now being dubbed on social media as "Permit Patty."

This comes after several widely reported instances

of white people calling the police on African-Americans

who are living their everyday lives.

For more on this story, please welcome our very own

Dulcé Sloan, everybody.

(cheers and applause)

Dulcé, another story of a white person calling 911

on a black person doing nothing.

What are your thoughts?

(sighs) Trevor, I'm so sick of this bullshit.

(laughter)

White people call the cops so often,

they don't even have to dial 911 anymore.

They just hit 9, and the operator's like,

-"We're on our way." -(laughter)

You know what Apple needs?

To make a phone exclusively for white people.

Every time you call the cops, it just connects you to yourself.

Hello. There's white people here.

What? There's white people here, too! Aah!

(laughter)

Uh, Dulcé, you know, a lot of people felt

that this example was particularly egregious,

because this woman was calling the cops on a child.

Yeah, but what really made me mad

is the way she did it.

Play that video again.

-(laughter) -Okay...

okay, now, freeze.

Why is she trying to crouch behind a wall

like a white privilege ninja?

(laughter)

The hell are you doing? We just saw you!

(laughter)

You don't disappear just because you duck down.

(laughter)

Black people aren't the dinosaurs from Jurassic Park.

(laughter)

-(cheering, applause) -I mean...

I mean, look at her. Come on.

She looks like she's popping a squat in a back alley

at Mardi Gras.

Oh, oh, oh, oh. And wait until you hear

how Permit Patty makes her money.

Well, social media users

are calling the woman "Permit Patty."

Her real name is Alison Ettel, a San Francisco entrepreneur.

NEWSMAN: The woman is also the CEO

of a company that specializes in cannabis edibles for animals.

(laughter)

Trevor, the woman sells weed to dogs.

(laughter)

(applause)

(whooping, cheering)

Dogs. How are you gonna sell drugs to dogs?

Like, "Hey, hey. (whistles) Hey, hey.

"Come on. I got that kibble, I got that bacon.

"We out here. (whistles)

Kibble, bacon, come on, come on."

If you ask me, that's the real reason

that white lady called the cops--

this little girl was on her corner.

(laughter)

-(whooping, applause) -Okay?

This was a turf war. It's a turf war!

Now, now, actually, Dulcé, Permit Patty was interviewed

by the San Francisco Chronicle,

and she said that she didn't actually call the cops.

-Hmm. -Yeah. She said she was just pretending to call them.

Oh.

Trevor, that makes it worse.

Because that means she didn't actually care about the permit.

She wanted to scare an eight-year-old black girl

into thinking that the cops were coming.

She knows black people are afraid of the cops,

and she used it as a weapon against them.

That's (bleep) up.

Imagine how white people would feel

if black people ran around threatening them with gluten.

Eat this biscuit, Karen!

(whooping, applause)

Karen!

Get into the biscuit, girl!

Look, I understand why you're upset, Dulcé,

-Mm-hmm. -but I think you'll be glad to know

that this story has a happy ending, right?

This girl was selling water because she was trying

to raise money for a trip to Disneyland.

Well, guess what? After Black Twitter broke the story,

somebody bought that girl four tickets to Disneyland.

-Yeah. -(cheering, applause)

See? Oh.

Look at God. Look at God.

Oh. But whatever she does,

she better not try to sell water there.

Disney don't (bleep) around. Mickey protects his corner.

Dulcé Sloan, everybody.

Hirono: Immigrant detention 'very reminiscent' of Japanese-American internment during WWII - Duration: 5:45.

JUDY WOODRUFF: We turn now to Capitol Hill, where, as congressional correspondent Lisa

Desjardins reports, there's new fallout after today's Supreme Court decisions and the ongoing

immigration debate.

LISA DESJARDINS: While House Republicans struggle on a compromise immigration bill, members

of the Senate are showing more signs of bipartisanship, but it might not be enough for a solution

to the immigration battle brewing on the Hill.

Senator Mazie Hirono is a Democrat from Hawaii and the only immigrant currently serving in

the Senate, having come to the U.S. from Japan as a child with her mother and brother.

Senator Hirono, we're going to talk about immigration and child separation.

But, first, I want to start with the news of the day, the decision by the Supreme Court

on the president's travel ban.

You have had some very strong words, comparing this to the Korematsu decision allowing Japanese

internment.

Chief Justice John Roberts wrote in the decision that he said that was wholly inapt, to liken

that to morally repugnant order to this one today.

Is he right?

Why is that a fair comparison?

SEN.

MAZIE HIRONO (D), Hawaii: Well, I am not the only one who is making the comparison to the

Korematsu.

In fact, Sonia Sotomayor, Justice Sotomayor, in her dissent, also likened this decision

to the Korematsu case, which was also justified on the basis of it was for national security.

And that is what the president is saying regarding his Muslim ban, or at least that's the argument

being made, even though, during the campaign and even after, he made it very plain.

He was very overt about wanting to prevent Muslims from coming to this country.

And they cleaned it up in the third iteration, or fourth iteration, of his Muslim ban, but

it's still a Muslim ban.

And now the Supreme Court has handed him, basically, wide powers to do whatever else

he wants.

Just call it national security.

And they will not go behind the words of the executive order itself to raise the kind of

issues that -- where our president in this case, as noted by the dissents.

LISA DESJARDINS: Senator, of course, many Republicans say it's not a Muslim ban.

But I want to talk to you about the other issue going on right now, and that's on child

and family separation.

And you have a unique personal perspective on this.

Do you mind telling us the story of your younger brother?

SEN.

MAZIE HIRONO: Well, when I was brought to this country by my mother when I was about

7, my older brother, who was 9, came with us.

And my mother had to leave my younger brother, who was only 3 years old at the time, because

she was escaping an abusive marriage, and she would be our sole breadwinner.

She brought the two older kids, us, because we could go to school, and there was nobody

to take care of my younger brother, who was too young to go to school.

So my younger brother never overcame the trauma of that separation.

And he would ask my grandparents, who raised him during this period, every single day,

looking at our pictures, when are they coming home?

It broke my grandmother's heart, and I still get emotional talking about it now.

So I know the trauma that separation creates, and this is what the president did to 2,400

children, and then not, too long after, basically he's saying, never mind, as though it makes

it all go away.

And, by the way, there's still chaos as to how this administration is going to reunite

all of these children with their parents.

It's just unconscionable and cruel.

But he takes no responsibility for it, and he continues to blame everybody else, takes

no responsibility for it.

LISA DESJARDINS: This is a heartbreaking situation.

I'm very sorry for what your brother went through.

The question is, what does Congress do now?

And it seems that Republicans in Congress are moving toward bills that would detain

families together.

How do you feel about that?

SEN.

MAZIE HIRONO: Well, you know what?

Detention, what is that?

And for indefinite periods of time of time?

That's also unconscionable.

And the bottom line is, it is the erroneous policy to begin with.

It's the zero tolerance that means every single person who can be prosecuted -- it could be

hundreds of thousands of people who need to be prosecuted criminally.

There is no justification.

There is no national security justification for that.

It is that underlying policy that led to the children being separated from their parents

to begin with, and that is now leading to mass detentions to facilities that we don't

even have.

And so now the military is coming in to put up these detention facilities, again, very

reminiscent of what happened to the Japanese Americans during World War II.

I'm not the only one who raises that kind of comparison.

It was Laura Bush who said we cannot repeat that kind of unconscionable action that destroyed

the lives of all those Japanese American families.

LISA DESJARDINS: Are you concerned, if Democrats do not compromise in some way, do not go along

with the idea of family detention, the president has indicated that he will, perhaps, separate

families again?

Are you willing to take that risk by not agreeing to the Republicans' idea?

SEN.

MAZIE HIRONO: You know, the question should be, is he willing to take that risk?

He's already gotten a lot of angry people.

This is the reason that he backed off.

Is he willing to take that risk?

Why is that it always put on other people?

Why does he not take responsibility for the chaos that he himself created?

So I say to the president, undo what you did.

You know, border security can be done in many different ways, but you have chosen the cruelest

way to do it.

And this doesn't have to be.

Why put it on other people?

I ask you the same question, Lisa.

LISA DESJARDINS: Senator Mazie Hirono of Hawaii, thank you.

SEN.

MAZIE HIRONO: Thank you.
