The best way to connect professional microphones to your camera is by using a
preamp like a BeachTek or a Saramonic unit. Did you know that you can use zoom
handy recorder to get just as good a result but with some added features
stick around and you'll find out
G'day, my name is Gary and you're watching the channel that's dedicated to make sound gear easy to understand
we upload tips tutorials and reviews so if you'd like some help with your audio then please
consider subscribing most mic inputs on DSLR cameras are quite noisy now on the
other hand if we use an audio interface like the zoom h5 to present the camera
with a higher signal we can lower the input sensitivity on the camera this
drops down the noise floor and results in a much cleaner audio recording now if
my usual steady instruction is a bit slow for you I'll give you a quick
startup guide first and if you need more help then stick around and I'll step you
through in more detail now these are the items that you need your microphones
your XLR cables your recorder and the bridging lead the 3.5 millimeter stereo
phono lead or mini jack lead as some call it and of course you'll need your
camera with a microphone input first connect all your components together
switch on the recorder and then make sure you have the correct file format
setup in stereo file which is the simplest way once in stereo file select
the inputs that you want and then test your microphones test 1 2 3 and then
it's just adjust the volume until you get the level around -12 go into the
audio settings on the camera then adjust the input gain on your camera to match
that then go ahead and record a test video listen to it back to see that the
audio is not distorted in any way so let's have a closer look at those steps
in detail and if you're enjoying this video please consider giving us a thumbs up
the XLR microphones of course going to
those connections the connection lead to your camera it needs to plug into the
line output and then into the microphone input of your camera now we can set up
the zoom recorder and switch it on and a couple of adjustments need to be checked
before we continue just make sure that the record mode is set to stereo file
select that go into in out and see that our line output level is not too high I
have it set to minus 15 at the moment some cameras depending on their
sensitivity maybe have to be set to a higher level this is an attenuated level
so it doesn't over draw off the camera one last thing is the mono mix going to
there and select a mono mixes off now select the microphones and adjust the
gain test one two three four and you're looking at a comfortable level about -12
seems to be a good level test check one two three four one two three four test
one two three four so both of those microphones are now correctly set up so
let's go to our camera or switch the camera on go to the input settings on
the camera make sure it's set to manual go to record level and while we're
speaking into the microphone we can adjust the level to see where it needs
to be so at the moment it's I've just gone above -12 but we can go down right
so now that the microphone is set up correctly we can go in and make a test
record test one two three four test one two
just doing a test on the camera the H five is set correctly and now the input
gain on the camera is set correctly then the last step of course is to listen to
that recording test one two three four test one two just doing a test on the
camera the H five is set correctly and now the input gain on the camera is set
correctly and then if you're happy was the recording it's completely setup
ready to go you can see and especially here for yourself how versatile these
recorders are you've been able to correctly match the XLR mics provide
phantom power if it's needed and then send a pre amplified audio feed to your
camera now if you've been following our channel for some time you'll understand
our goal is to make sound gear easy to understand so if you've got any
questions at all about this gear then type them in the comment section below
