Ghost-type Pokemon are mysterious, there known for having darker Pokedex entries such as
Banette being a junked doll brought to life by the grudge it holds against its former owner.
Other entries claim that Chandelure's flame is said to burn up the spirit, leaving the
body behind.
But Ghost-types are also mysterious just by there typing.
The question is simple, are Ghost-type Pokemon dead?
To answer this we must first define what a ghost is and this can be solved by taking
a quick look at the definition of a ghost.
By doing so we find that ghost are defined as apparitions of a dead person, in our case
a Pokemon, believed to appear or manifest to the living.
There has only been one known case in the games where a dead Pokemon has manifested
itself to the living, this incident takes place in the Pokemon Tower in Kanto.
At first arrival, it may seem that Ghost are common occurrences in the Tower.
However after the player acquires the Silph Scope it's revealed that all of them
were actually a disguised Gastly, Haunter, or Cubone...except for one.
In battle, before acquiring the Silph Scope, all of these so-called ghosts would dodge
any thrown pokeballs and cause all active Pokemon to become too frightened to attack.
However, after there, identities are revealed these effects are removed...aside from the
single Marowak near the top floor.
This is because she is actually the ghost of a mother Marowak that lost her life trying
to protect her young Cubone from Team Rocket poachers that sought to steal its valuable
skull.
Alright, so how does this help determine the truth behind ghost-type Pokemon?
Well, since we know that the Silph Scope allows us to battle and capture all former ghost
except for Marowak.
It means that gastly, haunter, and cubone all had similar attributes that allowed moves
to do damage and more importantly Pokeballs to capture them.
However, this doesn\rquote t explain why Gastly, Haunter, and Cubone look exactly like the
deceased Marowak.
To answer this question, we\rquote ll need to take a closer look at Gastly and Haunter.
Both Gastly and Haunter are known as the Gas Pokemon, notably, in many Pokedex entries,
Gastly is said to be made 95% of gas.
By taking an even closer look at Gastly's s Pokemon yellow dex entry we find that gastly
is said to have no real shape due to its gaseous body.
It's possible that due to having no definite shape allows Gastly the ability to assume
the appearance of anything.
The ability to shapeshift is showcased largely in episode 20 of the anime titled The Ghost
of Maiden's Peak.
In the episode, a Gastly is seen shapeshifting into an elderly woman and the maiden herself.
Also in this episode is Gastlys ability to create illusions which are demonstrated when
it's shown creating a living mousetrap, a ball, and even a mongoose.
This ability to create powerful illusions is further showcases in episode 95 A Shipful
of Shivers.
Both a Gastly and Haunter are shown creating an illusion of their owner's story.
It\rquote s possible that a combination of these abilities and the known mischievous
spirit of these two Pokemon contributed to there assumption of the same ghostly appearance
as the deceased Marowak.
On the other hand, we have Cubone, possessing none of the abilities demonstrated by Gastly
and Haunter.
The explanation I've come up with is that the mother Marowak still desires to protect
the Cubone and others from Team Rocket like it did in life.
This protection comes in the form of frightening people attempting to reach the top-floor and
masking the Cubone with the help of Gastly and Haunters ability to perform illusions.
Another and often overlooked detail that I'd like to bring up could also
apply to other Pokemon as well and that's the definition of what a type is, one definition
defines a type as a category of people, in our case Pokemon, or things having common
characteristics.
Boiled down, this essentially means that Ghost-type Pokemon share characteristics in common with
ghosts such as passing through walls and levitation.
Because Humans are the ones who type Pokemon this can result in oversimplification due
to human error.
This can be backed up by looking at a Pokemon that's been misjudged just for being
at the right place at the wrong time and is known as the disaster Pokemon due to its appearance
being followed by natural disasters.
The Pokemon I'm referring to is Absol which is classified as a Dark-type or Evil
type in Japan.
Absol, despite being a Dark-type shows the exact opposite traits by attempting to warm
humans of impending disasters.
However, due to human error and misjudgment, Absol is typed as Dark for supposedly bringing
the disasters it tried to warn against.
As said before types are determined by humans and thusly boiled down to what seems logical.
As such, Ghost-types due to showing similarities with actual ghost are awarded the ghost-typing.
In truth, Ghost-type Pokemon may actually be something else entirely.
However, that's up for you to decide alongside the question presented in this video.
As of now, true ghost Pokemon are impossible to catch and extremely rare.
Though according to the Pokedex its possible for some Ghost-types to come from dead people
such as Phantump and Yamask.
