- Third annual Best Triathletes of 2017.
Now in second place, this is where you might be looking
for virtual pitchforks.
She just kinda smacked the girls around all year.
What's up, trainiacs.
The year is coming to an end, and that means
that we are getting into my, I wanna say that this
is my third annual Best Triathletes of 2017.
Now in previous years, this was actually really easy.
There was not a whole lotta debate about who
the best three triathletes were,
and even less debate about who the top
triathletes were of the year.
It was like Jan Fredeno kicked ass again.
Daniela Ryf kicked ass again.
However, this year, we had a lot more drama.
Now before I get into the list, I wanna thank
our sponsor, Health IQ.
If you've been listening to the podcast,
Health IQ's been supporting us for a couple of months now,
and they really appeal to me as a potential sponsor,
because being a former investment adviser,
when I used to sell life insurance,
one of the things that really bugged me is that
people like me even, I would get basically the same
insurance rate as unhealthy people that I was writing
insurance for, and what happens is traditional
life insurance agencies, basically they use the health
of people like us, triathletes, swimmers,
cyclists, runners, vegans, healthy people,
to offset the cost of those unhealthy people.
Not with Health IQ, however.
With Health IQ, it's a new type of life insurance agency
specifically designed for active, healthy people,
where you can save up to as much as 25%
on your life insurance, all right.
Now if you wanna find out more about Health IQ,
see if you qualify, how much you could potentially save,
go to healthiq.com forward slash triathlontaren,
and that's where they've bundled up
all the triathlete-specific information,
or if you just give them a shout,
please say the code word Triathlon Taren
because it lets them know that you came from me.
Doesn't save you anything, but it certainly helps us out
because they support the channel.
So thank you and thank Health IQ.
On to the list.
In third place, we've got Mario Mola, who is on top
of the standings in the ITU distance racing.
Mario Mola was successful, but I wouldn't call him dominant.
He had a first in Hamburg and Edmonton,
and then he had a third place in the grand final.
So while it's not extremely dominant,
it's not tons of races, the ITU circuit
is such a short-course race, and it's so so so competitive
because you're dealing with young, 20-something people
that have put their entire lives on hold
for a decade to be awesome at this.
So to be at the top of the ITU points rankings list,
you had a good year, okay, congrats, Mario.
In third place on the women's side, I definitely
have to give it to my pal Sarah Crowley,
and to get third spot, Sarah had to win the Ironman
Asia Pacific championship at Cairns,
she had to win Ironman Frankfurt, the European championship.
She had to win ITU long course.
She appeared third place on the podium in Kona,
and then to top it off, she appeared in the
Triathlon Taren podcast, like talk about ending
your season on a high note, right, Sarah?
She's probably still glowing about that,
so I don't blame you, it's illustrious.
In second place, this is where you might be looking
for virtual pitchforks to come out from up underneath me,
is Patrick Lange.
I know, I know, our Kona men's winner
who set a course record doesn't get the top spot, why?
Well, the reason is, as I was in Kona and we were going
to press conferences and we were talking to people
about who the favorites are, Patrick Lange wasn't really
even in the conversation because he had barely raced
throughout the course of the year.
The only somewhat significant race that he had been in,
which he won earlier in the year,
was Half Ironman Reuget, so could he potentially
have been in the top spot by being amazing
throughout the course of the year?
Maybe, we just don't know because he didn't give us
the chance to see it.
Now in second place, this is where things got really
difficult for me.
I give the second-best female performances of 2017 to
Daniela Ryf.
I know, even myself, I had a really hard time
not giving her the top spot.
I mean, after all, she wins Kona, she wins Challenge Roth,
she wins the Half Ironman world championships,
what more does it take?
Well, you're about to find out,
but the reason that I didn't give her the top spot
in this year's list is because she wasn't dominant
like she was in previous years.
And earlier in the year, there were articles coming out,
people tweeting about, is Daniela done?
Has she burned too many matches,
come to too many races, trained too hard, overtrained?
Has Brett Sutton put so many eggs in the full-distance
basket that she's lost all of her speed?
She was even sick earlier in the year.
People had a lotta doubts about Daniela.
Fortunately, she righted all those wrongs
and absolutely killed it in her last
three, four months of racing.
But because she wasn't the absolute death blow
that she was in previous seasons, I couldn't give her
the top spot, because the person that did get the top spot,
she was a brick wall.
Now before we get on to those top men's and women's spots,
I wanna give one final thank you
and shout-out to Health IQ, thank you.
And Health IQ is the kinda company that like I've said
to you all many times before, if it wasn't a product
that I really believed in, I wouldn't be sharing
it with you, but being a former investment adviser
and knowing how that inner system works
with other life insurance companies, it irked me.
And Health IQ is doing it right,
and it's gonna save you money.
Like I say, healthiq.com forward slash triathlontaren,
or use the code Triathlon Taren to let them know
where you came from, helps us out,
helps keep all of these poo pillows being paid for.
Because I'm an adult and I can use whatever pillow I want.
Now in first place on the men's side is a crowd favorite,
and when I say it, you're gonna go, oh, of course.
Good list, Taren, thank you very much.
Lionel Sanders, yes, our very own Canadian,
in my opinion, I may be a little bit biased,
I think he had the best all-around season
of triathlon racing of anyone out there.
He wins Ironman Arizona, he wins the ITU
long-course worlds, he wins in Oceanside,
he wins Mont Tremblant, and the only two races
that he doesn't win are first, St. George Half Ironman,
where he was just minutes behind Alistair Brownlee,
and you only get passed in Kona for the top spot
in the last couple of miles.
So he ends up with his disappointing races
with a silver medal in Kona and a silver medal
behind a two-time Olympic gold medalist, Alistair Brownlee.
And because he had that well-rounded season,
that start to finish, he was putting in absolutely
punishing times, crushing fields,
putting in the fastest bike splits, the fastest run split,
making huge leaps and bounds by anywhere from one
to two minutes in the swim.
This is the kind of year that says, you know what,
Lionel Sanders might be the best triathlete
in the world right now and going forward.
You better watch him.
Now in the top spot on the women's side, to wrap it up,
is somebody who set records that not even Gwen Jorgensen
set during her prime, Flora Duffy.
This year, she broke the number of WTS wins
by a single athlete in a single year.
She beat Gwen Jorgensen.
Now I've gotta pull this out, look at this.
Flora Duffy was first in the WTS rankings.
She raced five times in the ITU
and placed first in four events.
Yokohama, Leeds, Hamburg, Edmonton,
Stockholm and the grand final.
That's six events, Canadian math, sorry.
And the only race that she didn't win was Montreal,
where I wanna say she was second, second.
And this kinDa dominance, like I say, in the ITU
is unheard of because races are won
by a matter of seconds and feet.
And for her to consistently come out time after time
on the top shows a huge amount of strength.
And, and, I forgot, she also won
the Xterra World Championships, off road, she's versatile.
And this dominance across all different races,
across the entire race calendar, I think is what sets
her apart from Daniela Ryf, who had some low months.
And Laura Duffy really did, she just kinda
smacked the girls around all year.
So there you go, trainiacs.
Let me know in the comments below what you think
of the placings, who you think maybe
really deserves to be on the list,
or who you think actually didn't deserve to be
on the list, or if you think that the order
should be a little bit different.
