What are magnetars? - Duration: 5:43.

Salvador López is asking what are magnetars.

We're first explaining how they are formed, then some of their properties,

and last some interesting facts about them.

Magnetars can form in the last stages in the life of a star.

When a star is massive enough to start fusion of helium

once it has exhausted its hydrogen, then it develops a helium nucleus.

This helium nucleus continues fusion to produce carbon, then oxygen, nitrogen, etc.

Until it reaches a point where there cannot be further fusion.

This arrives when the star develops an iron nucleus,

where fusion no longer occurs because it is not energetically favourable.

At this point, there is no more pressure

to hold up the external shells of material against the enormous gravitational pull.

Then, the external shells collapse, they just fall onto the nucleus.

This produces a shockwave, then an explosion, which is a supernova.

All the external shells are expelled out, and there are two possible kinds of remnants:

if the mass is very very high, nothing can balance the enormous gravitation from the nucleus

and a black hole, a singularity, develops.

On the other hand, if the mass is not that high,

there may remain what is called a neutron star, which can be a magnetar.

A neutron star is about 10 kilometers in size,

but accumulates maybe 3 to 5 solar masses.

This means it has a density close to that of an atomic nucleus.

The star, due to conservation of angular momentum, is spinning very fast.

This is just because, if we start with a large start which is rotating slowly,

when it collapses down to a very compact object, it behaves just like an ice skater

when crouching in to spin faster, it's just the same.

Spinning very fast means it may rotate several times per second.

There are jets of particles which are also expelled in two very collimated directions,

which may not coincide with the rotation axis,

it may be rotating like that, and the jet may be pointing like that.

This produces an astrophysical lighthouse,

so if Earth is in this point, somewhere in the way of this jet,

we get a pulse, like that: pulse, pulse, pulse,

because it is passing by from time to time.

The question is what prevents this nucleus

from collapsing like in the black hole case.

This is due to Pauli's exclusion principle for fermions and boson.

We have fermions, which are particles with semi-integer spin, for instance 1/2 or 3/2,

and we have bosons, which are particles with integer spin, for instance 0 or 1.

Examples of fermions are the electrons or neutrons,

and examples of bosons are photons.

Depending on what kind of particle we have, the energy levels are very different.

For a fermion, if we put two particles in the same state,

they must necessarily have different spin,

one may have spin +1/2 and the other -1/2.

But if we put in a third particle, it cannot fit in this energy level,

and it has to be located in the next one,

where we can also introduce one spin up and one spin down,

and so on for the next: up and down.

For a boson, it's not like that. We can put as many photons as we like

with any energy that we wish, there is no problem.

This implies that for fermions, as we increase the number of particles,

an enormous energy is building up, which eventually creates an enormous pressure

which holds up the neutron star against its gravitational force.

So we end up with these pulsars, pulsating stars,

because we observe it as giving us pulses.

Its energy can be sourced in three ways, depending on the kind of pulsar.

The simplest is rotation,

as we said, it is just spinning very fast,

and the particle jet hits us in every turn.

A second kind of source, which is very interesting, is accretion.

It occurs in binary systems, with for instance a normal star

whose material is being ripped off

by the enormous gravitational field of the neutron star.

This material forms an accretion disk, which sources the emission of jets.

The third kind is today's topic, magnetars.

A magnetar has a magnetic field much more intense than in the previous cases,

and the source of energy is the slow decay of this magnetic field.

In general, this magnetic field has a well defined shape, with smooth force lines,

but there are violen events, known as starquarkes.

A starquake is the analogue of an earthquake, but for a star.

Since these are such dense objects, any movement

or any energy dissipation on the surface

can trigger a realignment of the magnetic field, inducing fluctuations of the field.

When the starquarke is finally over, and the force lines are back to normal,

there may occur some so-called magnetic reconnections,

we have a force line like that, which bends and, plop! explodes

This releases a gigantic amount of energy, usually in the form of gamma rays.

There have been thee such blasts observed from Earth,

in the years '79, '98 and 2004.

To get an idea of their magnitude,

if they would have happened closer than 10 light-years from Earth, which is pretty far,

the energy released would have been enough to blast off any form of life from Earth.

Finally, and interesting bit is that the magnetic field in a magnetar is so intense,

that if one would be around the Earth-Moon distance from us,

its energy would erase the information from all credit cards in the world,

despite their tiny magnetic field.

But it were that close, this would be least of our problems!

Stossel: China's Freedom-Crushing 'Social Credit Score' - Duration: 4:52.

Is your privacy under threat?

Has the age of privacy come to an end?

Are you sick of Facebook's

lack of respect

for your privacy?

If you think

your privacy's threatened,

be glad you don't live in China.

Chinese government wants to give

every citizen a score

based on behavior.

Purchase history,

political leanings,

and social interactions would be used

to calculate a person's trust score.

Facebook and Twitter

are banned in China,

so people use

So the government spies on that

round-the-clock.

The state also monitors

the Chinese version of Amazon,

called Alibaba.

Alibaba is by your side

24 hours a day,

seven days a week.

Why should we care what the Communists do?

We're not in China.

Li Schoolland came to America

Here's Li when she was

16.

She survived the

Great Leap Forward,

the Great Famine,

the Cultural Revolution.

Her parents were doctors so

they

and she were

re-educated.

And this was to teach you

not to be fancy?

The repression is over.

It's all better now.

Today in China,

if you tell friends about certain books,

your message will be blocked.

Even innocent sounding phrases

are censored.

So I understand

the titles

of novels like Animal Farm,

Brave New World,

but Long Live the Emperor?

Well he's President forever.

They can't even talk about this teddy bear.

Winnie the Pooh?

And now, another step

more subtle than just

banning things.

The state will monitor what you say

in social media

and assign you

a social credit score.

That will tell them how trustworthy you are.

The government says

this will allow the trustworthy to roam

everywhere under heaven,

while making it hard for the discredited

to take a single step.

There's gonna be this new

social credit score.

Some American governments

already do something

similar.

The LAPD can scan tens of thousands of

license plates.

Los Angeles police now practice

predictive policing.

They pay a company called Palantir

to analyze social media,

trace people's ties to gang members,

and predict the likelihood that

someone may commit a crime.

After searching over a hundred million data points,

Palantir displayed an impressive

web of information

on one burglary suspect.

People like that.

They think it makes them safer.

I would like to know

that there's a trust score so

I can know who's trustworthy

and who's not.

Sounds sort of appealing.

When government does gets involved,

bad things can happen.

What happens if you have a low score?

If they really don't like what you say,

they lock you up

and torture you.

They didn't allow me to sleep.

I was kept in a small room

and saw no daylight for half a year.

But that's China.

Why should

we be afraid?

Get out of my life!

In America, every week

on YouTube,

Twitter,

Facebook,

I challenge people in power.

Trump does make things up.

I say these things and

no one punishes me.

So far.

Great Movies Ruined With Special Effects - Duration: 5:36.

Over the years, computer generated effects have become an increasingly crucial tool in

Hollywood's arsenal — but there's a right way and a wrong way to handle them.

While some movies use CGI as a gentle paintbrush, others have clobbered audiences over the head

with it, resulting in big-budget disappointment.

Not all the movies in this list are clunkers, but if the digital effects were a little bit

better, they might have been better received.

Here are some movies that were all-but-ruined by their special effects.

I Am Legend

This 2007 movie put Will Smith as the lone survivor of a zombie-ruled world.

Aside from his trusty canine, Smith spends the first 40 minutes of the movie totally

alone — then the Darkseekers show up and ruin everything.

Director Francis Lawrence didn't intend to use CGI for the Darkseekers.

He wanted to rely on actors and practical effects, but when it came time to shoot the

movie, the effects weren't convincing.

With no time to make corrections, he had to resort to CGI.

He would later describe the CGI compromise as a major disappointment in a conversation

with Den of Geek.

"When I saw the dailies, I broke out into a cold sweat.

They were very pale, and covered in this chalky powder to protect their skin, which was a

really interesting concept, but it looked like a bunch of mime artists running across

Washington Square Park.

It didn't work at all."

The Thing

John Carpenter's The Thing is a masterpiece of practical effects, with body horror sequences

that still look frighteningly good to this day.

The same cannot be said for The Thing's 2011 prequel.

While the filmmakers worked to make the story fit with Carpenter's chronology, the movie's

special effects don't hold a candle to what the 1982 version accomplished.

That's not to say they didn't try — the production hired special effects house studioADI

to bring the gooey, gross monsters to life.

Unfortunately, due to problems with scheduling and budget, many of the company's practical

effects didn't show up in the movie.

According to Bloody Disgusting,

"[The film] was such a disaster that studioADI later fan-funded a film called Harbinger Down,

which was made as an apology for what happened in 2011."

Tron: Legacy

The majority of the special effects in the 2010 Tron sequel are pretty great — except

for the CGI face of a young Jeff Bridges as the movie's villain, Clu.

Despite best efforts, the de-aged Bridges looked off.

A Time magazine review summed up the issues, saying,

"He looks just like young Bridges if young Bridges had had way too much plastic surgery,

so it's hard to take him seriously.

Clu seems more like an unfortunate Botox victim than a dastardly despot."

Green Lantern

Before Deadpool, Ryan Reynolds suited up for DC as Hal Jordan, aka Green Lantern — the

first film in a planned franchise for the glowing green hero.

Those plans didn't pan out.

People came to see the Green Lantern, but what they got was mostly green screen.

While Reynolds told Yahoo!

Movies that the script was to blame for the film's failure, the mediocre, wall-to-wall

CGI didn't help.

A review from ScreenCrush went in on the movie's fatal flaws, saying,

"Almost nothing on-screen is real, up to and including the sense of adventure.

It's just a bunch of digital stuff shooting other digital stuff.

And some of that digital stuff looks really bad."

"WOAH"

The Matrix Reloaded

In 1999, The Matrix was a special effects marvel.

But when The Matrix Reloaded hit theaters just a few years later, CGI took the driver's

seat.

The high-tech wire work and practical effects that made the original so jaw-dropping were

washed out in a sea of CGI that looked iffy, and aged poorly.

This issue is most apparent during the movie's infamous "Burly Brawl" scene — a sequence

that found Keanu Reeves' Neo battling hundreds of Agent Smiths.

The concept probably jumped off the page, but the finished product of the Burly Brawl

is really more of a mushy mess.

The Mummy Returns

When the sequel to The Mummy hit theaters in 2001, digital effects were still very much

in their infancy, but that didn't stop this movie from leaning into the spectacle.

Like a cake that isn't quite done cooking yet, the effects look rubbery and half-baked,

and they've aged even more poorly than the mummy itself.

This was Dwayne Johnson's first foray into the big-budget world of blockbuster movies,

being introduced as the villainous Scorpion King — unfortunately, the People's Champ

ended up looking more like a video game villain when he showed up for his climactic fight

scene.

It would've been impressive on the Playstation 2, but on the big screen?

Not even close.

Hulk

Ang Lee's character-driven take on the Hulk has its supporters, but the movie's special

effects are far from incredible.

The Dissolve, discussing the Marvel movie, noted that:

"The effects used to create the Hulk keep hitting the limits of what 2003 CGI could

accomplish, making the monster look more like a work of animation than green flesh and blood."

When Lee's Hulk hit theaters, the MCU was just a twinkle in Marvel's eye.

Lee did the best with what he had, but at the end of the day, Hulk's green giant left

us pining for the good ol' days of Lou Ferrigno in all his body painted glory.

At least that getup felt real.

Well — sort of.

SIGMUND FREUD/ ANNA FREUD What DEFENCE MECHANISMS are…? - Duration: 6:39.

Hey guys It`s Nikki and in this video i`ll talk about defensive mechanisms, interested

stay to find out more. In the previous video we talked about the

different types of fear and where they come from* in this video we continue the topic/theme

with defensive mechanisms but this segment is a bonus to the series because it`s actually

Sigmund Freud`s daughter Anna Freud who talks about them in her book: Ego and the mechanisms

of defence. The defensive mechanisms are used as a protection

when the Ego sees a threat from Superego, Id and so on.

Let`s start with something familiar, the first mechanism is sublimation, remember That is,

when you have a crush on your best friend's mother and as a result you become a professional

tennis player out of guilt. That`s a defence mechanism which tries to protect you from

the guilt itself. The ego redirects the libidos energy into socially accepted goal.

Next one is Denial: there is a reason why the first of the twelve steps in alcoholism

treatment (and not only) is acceptance. Just think about it, you deny you have a problem

therefor you don`t have to deal with with, life is good, you don`t have to worry. The

trouble with that is that you get kick out of your apartment because you`ve spent the

money for the rent on drinking. And then when you are kicked out but still

don`t want to deal with your own alcoholism, you use rationalization- this apartment was

horrible I needed to move out anyway, it`s better it happened like this. It`s all for

good and so on. You`ve used it so successfully that now again you are free from worry just

homeless but hey you can always go back to your parents' house, right.

So now you live with your parents and still continue to drink heavily but your father

starts making a problem out of it and once again you feel threatened so you start going

to your mother as a refuge, crying on her shoulder just like when you were a little

boy. That`s regression going back to a past stage of development or in short acting like

a child. Your father keeps bugging you nonstop. You`re

soo pissed off but the house is on his name so it`s really not a good idea to enrage him

to deal with your own anger you use displacement which means that you fight with everyone but

your father( who is the cause for your outbursts) and just to make things more fun you use projection

and say that everyone around you is mad and trying to pick a fight with you when in reality

you are the the one picking the fights. Your mother had it and sits you down to tell

you, you`re acting like a complete jerk and it`s time to get your shit together. You lash

out at her but she`s never done something like that. Telling you those kind of words.

So that gets you thinking and suddenly you see her point. Now you`re overwhelmed with

guilt, fear, anxiety. All these emotions are too much to take so it`s time for intellectualization.

You start reading about addictive behavior, at this point you`re aware that you`re alcoholic

but the thought of it is so unbearable that you turn it into something academic by making

it a research and writing a scientific book about it.

You`re finally gone successfully through the twelve step program and you are at that moment

when you can`t even remember most of the horrible things you`ve done, for real. You`ve buried

them so deep in your mind that you`re surprised and don`t believe when people are telling

what you`ve done- that`s called repression. But when you`re reminded about it you start

feeling guilty, trying to get rid of it you use compensation- buying your mother a diamond

necklace, a new tv for your father and taking excessive care to make your partner feel good.

A very obvious compensation mechanism is also a parent who buys toys for his/ her children

when they work too much and they feel guilty that they`re are unable to spent time with

their kids. Those were the defence mechanisms or the reaction

formation we`ve talked about in the previous part. What they actually do is to prevent

us from expressing dangerous instincts by making us act in some kind of opposite way.

Much like how little boys pull girls braids when they like them. That`s a reaction formation

in action. Later on we might not even understand what is so scary about this particular instinct

but at this moment when we`ve had it, the ego felt threatened from it and used defense

mechanisms as a protection. In the next video i`ll talk about Ulrich Beck`s

theory so if you`re interested click on to the nerdy bird to subscribe and if you

liked this video thumbs up and leave me a comment to tell me what you think. You can

also get the audio of this video and listen to it next time you`re heading to your lectures

here or check some of my other videos you might like them, all links will be also in

the description, bye.

Virtual Tour: the HOENN Region - Duration: 32:10.

Good on ya mates, welcome to new video in

ITALIAN

Before to start, Nickyimbo has made me this new picture. Thank you very much

Actually

The idea for this video, is the project of

create a sort of guide for all the pokè-players

especially if we are talking about our real guide on this brand....the regions.

But let me tell you something....

If you don't like Pokèmon, close the video right now

because we're gonna dig it up a lot

But if you don't like pokèmon.....Why are you here?

You've requested me this video for at least 2 years

We've been trough the Kanto region

the Johto region, a sort of continous of Kanto for some of you.

Alola, the newest one, just to be catchy....

I did it right! Did I?

And at last, I can't run away anymore from the inevitable HOENN region

The third generation of pokèmon, and actually one of the most important and innovative generation.

And not just because I've discovered out that Brendan (the main character)

isn't old, but he has got a sort of sock upon his head

and i will try to do the same as him.

As I told you before, this is a very important generation

because

there was the introduction of the natures and the abilities of every pokèmon

there was an implementation of the competitive concept for the very first time

HOENN is a very tropical region

a bit like ALOLA, but actually i preferred this region for some reasons.

Masuda, the concept designer, claims that the word Hoenn, means, fluorishing relationships.

Infact, the Hoenn's weather, allows you to be in strict contact with the nature

vegetations, deserts, mountains, oceanic enviroments, wonderful coasts

and what about the volcanoes????

HOENN rely totally to Japan, especially in the south, the island of Kyushu

the 3th biggest japanese island.

Demographically it comprehends 694 people

actually the 4th according to demography

there's even more distribuition between the cities than the other regions.

Not like Luminose City in KALOS , the bed of half of his population.

HOENN is the richest region for sea paths

and underground paths as well

Maybe because it refers to the story of this region. The war between Groudon and Kyogre.

Oh Gosh, I forgot to tell you the story of this region.

The creation of Hoenn, dates to the creation of 2 primordial creatures:

GROUDON, the one who created the earth

and KYOGRE, the one who created the ocean.

According to the legend, these 2 creatures started a war for the supremacy.

A disastrous war who required the intervention of RAYQUAZA

Rayquaza ended the war sending Groudon in the Terra Cave, and Kyogre in the Sea Cave.

But the one who defined HOENN, was REGIGIGAS

who bounded the continents betwenn them.

with the help of 3 elements: Clay, Ice and Iron

creating the 3 Golems as well

Find the 3 Golems for the key

Obviously HOENN does not have a train system.

That's a pity, because it would have been quite interesting have a sort of

floating rails like Water Seven in One Piece

or the "Ponte della Libertà" of Venice,

a bridge who connect Venice to the rest of Italy

Another legend claims that Hoenn was originally populated by the BRAILLE

An ancient diarchic tribe who used to lived there

splited in 2 kings.

One in Mt. Chimney and the other one in Sootopolis City

the worshipper of Groudon and the worshipper of Kyogre

There was a time when a part of the population started to claim the adoration of just 1 divinity

Rayquaza!?!

Like the predomination of the Monotheistic religions in the Middle- East

But hey, the Pokèmon are stupids

The Braille's duty was the protection of these 2 divinity

The future Team Magma and Team Acqua will be the heirs of this population.

The Braille have had a battle even with the 3 Golems

Because they were considered other 3 divinity

because of that they were confinated in other 3 caves.

Now that we know a lot of things about Hoenn let's start to explore the Region.

Even because there'a lot to know about it.

Let's start

The first city of our travel is LITTLE ROOT TOWN

Basking amid vibrant nature, this simple town is not shaded with any one hue.

the city where Brendan is moving to, at the beginning of the adventure

He's from Johto originally

Little Root, is inspired to the existing city of SASEBO

and actually even in italy there's a citty called Little Root (=Albanova)

in the countryside of Naples

created from Benito Mussolini during the fascist age

the creation of this city was a contrast for the mafia.

The city has been erase in the 1946

The Pokèmon are stupids, are they?

BIRCH, the professor Pokèmon

studied the Pokèmon in the open nature.

For the first time we have to choose the pokèmon in the open air for an issue.

During the inondation of Hoenn, Birch lose a Treecko

Actually Little Root is the origin city of Harrison, a good trainer

If you're planning a good team, let's check him out

Little Root claims to have a shore, but, where??!??!!

Maybe over the trees, but it would be quite uncomfortable

Near the city there's the so called forbidden forest

the human being cannot enter there, even because he is ruled from a Venosaur

So it's better to don't mess it up with him

It's the same garden where Vera has obtained hhe Bulbasaur

In the north there's OLDALE TOWN

A town where the contrast between colorful flowers and deep, verdant forests is most beautiful.

Do you remember the same city in Johto?

well, this city is useless, there's nothing

I'm not overeacting so much

the only one market, without pokè-balls

It can bright maybe for the presence of the prof. Alden

the one who discovered out ancient ruins, very importants.

a bit similar to the Pokè-mopolis tribe

who knows

PETALBURG CITY
