Diana Chang asks, "when does "liking/loving something" become an "obsession" or an "addiction"?"

Let's start by debunking a myth.

Most of us believe a thing causes addiction, like alcohol, smartphones, or video games.

This is wrong.

Most people who drink, use smartphones, or play video games don't getter addicted to

them.

Addictions aren't about something being added to your life.

Addictions are about things that are missing from your life.

We all want to experience joy, connect with friends and family, and find meaning in our

lives.

When we don't have enough of these things, that's when we're vulnerable to getting

it from something else.

This is how an addiction can form.

Now we have to define what an addiction is.

My favorite definition is "engagement in self-destructive behavior despite adverse

consequences".

You keep doing something that initially feels good but causes you a lot of long-term problems.

I know it's a broad definition but addictions are a broad thing.

Your brain doesn't care if something's a chemical like caffeine, marijuana, an opioid

or a behavior like gambling, social media, or shopping - if it can make you feel good,

it can lead to an addiction.

Here's an example.

Maybe I'm lonely, I start binging my favorite shows on Netflix, I feel better because it

distracts me from my loneliness, but it's hard for me to stop watching, I go to sleep

late, wake up late, get to work late, and spend a lot of my day thinking about what

I'm going to binge next.

These are the types of problems that are common to addictions.

You can also see how addictions keep someone from addressing their underlying problems.

The more Netflix I watch, the more lonely I become.

Technology is also making it easier to become addicted.

Autoplay on Netflix and YouTube makes it hard for you to stop watching videos.

The endless scroll of Facebook and Twitter fools you into thinking you're making progress

when the feed will go on forever.

Notifications make you think there could be an important message waiting for you when

it's probably just a cheesy gif or bitmoji.

Diana also asked about obsessions.

When you're obsessed with something you might think about it a lot, look up a lot

of information about it, have strict routines setup around the obsession, and get anxious

if something doesn't go according to plan.

Obsessions become problems if you have a hard time controlling these thoughts, if your routines

start to get in the way of your life, you experience a lot of anxiety, or if you lose

a lot of time or money.

If I spend all of my free time thinking about Star Trek, avoid going to something really

important because there's a new episode of Star Trek: Discovery, get anxious because

someone used my Netflix account and I lost track of where I was in my rewatch of Star

Trek: Voyager, and I blew a ton of money buying starships, then I might have an obsession.

If you are worried you might have an obsession or addiction, ask yourself and the people

you are close to if the thing you're into is getting in the way of your life.

If it is, understand how it might be fulfilling a need that missing - is it your only way

you have to deal with your emotions, is it making you feel less alone, is it distracting

you from the direction your life has gone?

That's how we treat these problems, not by eliminating a thing but helping people

develop new ways to live more fulfilling lives.

Why Japanese walk on the LEFT side of the sidewalk? - Duration: 2:42.

A land that never leaves the tradition, but it lives the past in a modern way of the present: Samurai, cars, scalping, and …

ok, just read this article and you will remain impressed.

You surely have heard about the Samurai. This group of warriors was very outstanding, and above other things, thanks to the Katana:

the Japanese sword, was accompanied by wakizashi, his little sister,

she built the daisho, that was stuck in the obi, the belt on the left hip.

The Katana is not only a status quo symbol, but it was also a very important tool,

and not only as a weapon,

but it kept the family together and thanks to that, the clan:

it contains and channel the spirit of the sacred ancestors.

If you put it in this way, it wasn't that uncommon to see that the Samurai didn't enjoy to see not the Katana was threatened:

also if you touched it, it was a disrespectful thig to do

and sometimes they needed to clean it with blood.

So, to avoid these unpleasant situations, the Samurai started to walk, keeping the left side,

so that the sword was protected…

and so, up until now it's natural for the Japanese people to keep the left side,

they even started to drive on the left side

it's reverted than our Italian way of driving.

Only one city in Japan, doesn't keep this "tradition of using the left side"

(except for pedestrians, obviously the cars move the same way as the other cities of Japan…)

It's Osaka!

Osakan people confirm that it's because they want to keep an international touch and an open mind…

very often other citizens mock this diversity,

saying that in Osaka there weren't Samurai (and in fact this wasn't the most famous cast…

In reality there is another city with this "rule", sometimes they keep it and sometimes not:

in Tokyo, in subways o at train stations and in other public areas,

sometimes it's asked to keep the left and sometimes the right…

but Tokyo is not Japan, so in reality there isn't nothing to be amazed at.

It happens often that I listen or hear a daily self-righteously moralistic person,

the one that recieved the knowledge from above,

and of Japan he/she knows everything^^

nd with all this "knowledge he/she is free to criticize, offend in his/her way a country.

for me, I'm happy to continue to live with Japanese people, in Japan, and to see, live and to share this society, without any judgment

and mostly, not to feel any profound arrogance in criticizing something, only because it's different from my culture.

SOLO WOMAN TRAVEL CHALLENGE 2017 - Ep. 08 - Akshyata Bajracharya - Langtang & Gosaikunda - Duration: 5:21.

Gosaikunda...

I don't know what kunda (lake)

small kunda (lake)

there are so many lakes here!

Hi, my name is Akshyata Bajracharya. I'm 23 years old.

I travelled to Langtang- Gosaikunda area for 12 days.

Basically, this challenge was very new to me.

So I wanted to choose a new route for me.

I had been to treks beginning and ending in Pokhara before.

So I wanted something new for me.

So...after deciding that,

the first place that came to my mind was Gosaikunda.

And I was looking through the criteria

and it had to be minimum 10 days travel.

So I added Langtang to that.

Talking about my overall experience

I had a lot more fun than I thought I would

Before I had thought that I might get bored or even homesick

But that didn't happen, thanks to the people I met on the way.

I was travelling alone so I had noone to share a room with

So the people there were hesitant to give me a room.

They didn't give me room to stay in.

Around Lama Hotel, there were...like, 6 hotels,

among which I had already been rejected from 5 hotels.

Nobody gave me room.

I did get a room at the last one.

But still, as time passed...because I had reached there early,

I reached there around 2PM and people would usually get there at around 5-5:30PM

so as time passed...

more people started coming in

Then they asked me to move out.

They asked to live in the dining area instead.

but...

when I was having lunch, earlier that day,

there was a guide dai with whom I was interacting

but I was getting negative vibes from him, and I got a creepy feeling

so...

I didn't want to stay at the dining area but I had to

It was already late in the evening and I didn't have anywhere else to go

So I thought I'd stay in the dining anyway

So as I started moving out with my backpack,

a group of girls arrived.

I had interacted with them earlier already.

And they asked me what was going on and I told them.

They...I was waiting for someone to just ask me

and they did. They offered me to stay with them.

They were a group of girls.

Actually they had come with some guys as well.

But they offered to stay with them

And I didn't think of anything else.

Right away, I just...like..

I agreed and I stayed with them that night.

Most of the people that I met

I had a conversation starter...

that I came from Patan

And after saying that

when I would share that I was travelling solo, I got mixed reactions

The local people would be surprised and say that

even the locals, even men don't usually travel solo around there.

That was the locals' reaction.

But the reaction from tourists...

they were really...they were happy

They were happy to see that something like this is happening in Nepal.

but

They hadn't heard about the challenge.

So when I shared about it, they liked the idea and appreciated it.

I got good reactions from tourists,

but mixed reactions from the local people.

They were telling me what to do and not to do - lots of restrictions.

To people, I want to say...

just...don't hold yourself back to do what you love.

These kind of small steps lead you to bigger changes.

Through this challenge, if people's perception about Solo Woman Travel changes even a little bit,

I'm so glad that I am a part of it.

If you want to see these changes in people

or in the world

you have to take that one little step.

I did it...and

If I can do it, so can you.
