Waching daily Mar 22 2018

oh my goodness are we on time am I am I actually early

I'm not quite sure hi everybody how are you today are you okay I hope so

are you happy I really really hope so yes here we go again it is a Wednesday

night it is late and live and here we go again with another live stream I hope

you are okay how has your week mean has it been okay I really hope so as well my

week hasn't been too bad but you know what it's like there is always something

that needs doing I've been busy today doing my housework

I'm seriously considering getting a maid to come and help me around the house

honestly I'm not joking I'm really considering it so if you would like to

come round a couple of times a week maybe on a Tuesday and a Thursday to

just a dust around just to get rid of the dust and maybe wash mister Steve's

stinky old socks then you are more than welcome to it's up to you really so here

we go I hope you are okay lots of people already on the live chat

so it is nice to see lots of people let's have a look first of all at the

live chat and come on there it is oh my goodness lots of people here how is the

weather Thank You Alice or Alex the weather is okay it's been quite nice

today it's starting to feel like spring at the moment because the spring weather

has arrived we had snow last weekend and the snow has gone and now we have lots

and lots of beautiful sunshine and of course this weekend spring officially

ends and summer begins because we alter the clocks this weekend

so on Sunday very early in the morning on Sunday the clocks will go forward one

hour for the start of British summer time

oh look lots of people on live chat so nice to see you there hello everyone

from Wales oh hello Wales I'm not very far away

from you do you know that I'm just up the road around about 40 minutes away

from Wales in fact I can see the Welsh Hills from my house hello lapel hello

lapel and also shadi as well Jamelia is here hello everyone nice to see you

Jamelia and also carlos is here hello everyone I wish you all a nice warm

flowery spring well that's nice thank you very much carlos luciano is here as

well also juliana hello Juliana Juliana Jonas nice to see

you as well Zainab says hey people and hey Zainab

live from England yes it's true we are now as live as live can be just in case

you don't believe me it is now just coming up to six minutes

past 10 o'clock here in the UK it's very late all of my neighbors have now gone

to bed so they are sleeping soundly oh I like that expression

if you sleep soundly it means you have a very good sleep so someone might ask you

how did you sleep last night and you might reply I slept soundly hmm

you had a sound sleep that means that you slept very very well so lots of

people talking on the live chat it's so nice to see many of you here of course

on Wednesdays I am here at 10 p.m. and you

can catch me on Sundays every Sunday from 2 p.m. and the reason why I do this

on a Wednesday so late is to give other people the chance to join in with the

live chat because that's what we are here to do we are here to share our love

of the English language so this weekend the clocks will change yes Sam the

clocks will go forward which of course means that the time for my livestream

will also change so don't forget that on Sunday the clocks here in the UK will

change Agnieszka is here hello Agnieszka a

saying saying hello to my him in the live chat also anna is here anna what a

beautiful name it's almost the same name is my mother Magda is here as well hi

i'm glad to be with you well you are very welcome Magda no problem Natalie

yeah Natalie oh I am a newcomer on your live chat but I have watched many of

your lessons well Natalia you are more than welcome welcome to my live stream

right at this very moment I am standing in my little studio on Wenlock edge

broadcasting live to the whole of YouTube or at least to anyone who is

interested Zeinab says if you didn't sleep well would you say that you didn't

sleep a wink yes that's very good and as we mentioned last week William

Shakespeare came up with that particular phrase so not to sleep a wink if you

didn't sleep a wink that means you had a very bad night's sleep

you didn't sleep a wink math Emmaline says it's pretty easy to understand your

English Duncan compared to other English

speakers well some people speak clearly some people speak very quickly some

people have very strong accents some people don't pronounce their words

clearly some people are very lazy when it comes to speaking English even native

English speakers sometimes get it wrong it's true so just because you speak

English as your first language doesn't necessarily mean that you are good at

speaking the language you will be amazed how many native speakers are really

awful at speaking English I'm not joking they are absolutely terrible at speaking

English juliana says I love your classes thank you very much that's very kind of

you sadly there is no mr. Steve tonight I'm very sorry about that but for all

those who are missing mr. Steve at this very moment this is just for you

DPD be deep deep dude yes we are live to the Internet hello to you and I hope you

are feeling very very happy today I really really hope so it's mr. Duncan

that's me for those who aren't familiar with my work I teach English here on

YouTube and I have done so for the past 11 years I believe it or not I'm the

first-ever native English speaker from England to start actually teaching

English on YouTube it's true the live chat is very busy so I don't want to

ignore you I will try to include as many people on the live chat as possible I

love your accent so much Thank You Ahmed for that that's

very kind of you Daru she says good evening mr. Duncan I

missed a lot of sessions I am happy to be with you again you are welcome

everyone is welcome here if you are learning English as a second language or

of course maybe you are lying in your bed at the moment with your mobile phone

or another mobile device in your hand perhaps you can't sleep and you are

watching my livestream to keep you company

Zainab says this is the first time for me to join you live and I am over the

moon well that's good I'm very pleased to hear that also Marco says can you

please say a big hello to me okay Marco here comes your big hello hello Marco a

big SuperDuper hello to you as well thanks for joining me live of course

don't forget you can catch all of the live streams again later on my youtube

channel and of course don't forget you can also follow the live chat as it

happened on the recorded version it's amazing

I have had a big problem this week do you want to hear about my problem here

is my big problem that I'm suffering at the moment now springtime is arriving

and many of the creatures who were sleeping during the winter are now

waking up and that includes this particular insect can you see it

it is a ladybird and at the moment my house is actually overrun with lady

birds they are everywhere inside the house in fact I have spent all of this

week clearing the lady birds out of the house sadly unfortunately I have

actually stepped on a few of them so one or two of them are now squashed they are

unfortunately dead but this one this one I managed to save so this week there

have been many many lady Birds invading my house and there you can see one of

them they are actually beautiful little creatures they are so lovely don't you

think so there it is one of my unwelcome visitors that has decided to invade my

house this week if you want to see more of the lady bird later please feel free

to ask if he is a Wednesday night it is now 15 minutes past 10 o'clock as

I mentioned earlier sadly there is no mr. Steve tonight I'm very sorry about

that but he is very busy he has a big important conference to attend yes he

does he certainly does Ginny asks I have a

question are you speaking slowly to let us listen to more clearly no I'm not

this is how I normally talk a lot of people think that I'm talking really

slowly but this is how I normally speak in my everyday life

I thought that was called a ladybug thank you Alex

yes in Britain we call that particular insect a ladybird and in the United

States they call it a ladybug so ladybird or ladybug so you have a choice

really okay Emma asks what does avoid mean if you avoid something it means you

stay out of the way of it you stay clear of something you stay away from it you

make sure that you don't come into contact with it you avoid something you

might avoid your your family you might avoid the person who lives next door so

maybe in the morning you go outside into your garden and you see your neighbor

but you don't want to speak to them so you try to avoid them you make sure that

they don't see you you avoid them I hope that helps Fernando is here

hello Fernando hi mr. Duncan how's it hanging it is hanging quite well at the

moment I have my extra loose underwear on tonight are adass says yes ladybirds

don't they make the maids work well I wish the lady Birds certainly the

insects I wish they would help me clean my house because they have been a real

pain this week I'm the first one in the channel and I'm Egyptian I'm sorry

you're not you're not the first one who Sam I have been on here for nearly 20

minutes already Wow it's going so fast hello mr. Duncan

from Spain how are you thank you very much Francisco I'm okay a

busy week always something to do and this week I have been doing some spring

cleaning because spring is on the way today the weather was absolutely

beautiful it was a gorgeous day here in the UK right where I lived we had

sunshine almost urn unbroken sunshine so that means that the Sun was out all day

so yes it really does feel as if spring is coming and as I mentioned earlier the

clocks will go forward they will go forward one hour forward one hour this

weekend because it is the start of British summer time oh I can't begin to

tell you how happy I feel because summer is just around the corner I love I love

springtime and I certainly love summertime as well live chat very busy

on this Wednesday night here in the UK our Ahmed asks how are you are you okay

yes I'm okay I hope you are as well millet says hello

from Darby oh hello Darby it's nice to see you tonight

whereabouts in Darby are you I know Darby quite well and I love Derbyshire

Derbyshire is a beautiful part of the country ah some beautiful places to

visit one particular place is called Dovedale very very nice in fact I

actually made an English lesson very close to Dhamma B did you know that yes

and it is available on my You Tube channel

Ahmed says Hossam really early that man is very good you will enjoy it oh thank

you Ahmed I think our med is actually recommending my lessons thank you very

much Shahrukh Chao qui Chuck we says what is the program mr. doe

tonight we are talking about many things many topics and of course you are more

than welcome to join in as well first of all we have an excerpt from one of my

full English lessons to give you an idea of the sort of things that I do here on

YouTube later on a good question for you can you keep a secret are you good at

keeping secrets now sometimes when a person asks you to keep a secret some

people are not very good at keeping something to themselves they are not

good at doing it so one of the questions tonight can you keep a secret can you

let me know later on let's have a look at one of my full English lessons here

is an excerpt from one of my early full English lessons and don't forget there

are over 500 video English lessons on my youtube channel have you ever been

caught doing something red handed have you ever been caught in the act

the idiom red handed means that you have been caught in the act of committing a

crime or doing something wrong you might have been seen carrying out

the bad act as it was being done or perhaps some evidence was found that

showed you doing it such as a photograph or video clip you have been caught

red-handed you were caught red-handed the phrase originated in Scotland and

refers to the bloodstains found on the hands of a murderer

as a child I used to play many games but one game in particular still sticks out

in my mind hide-and-seek I bet at some point you have played this game too

the game is almost always played by a group of people one person hides and the

other people must try to find that person we can use hide-and-seek as a

phrase to mean the task of trying to hunt for someone if a person keeps

escaping from your view as you pursue them then we can describe this as a game

of hide-and-seek we can also say that the people involved are playing cat and

mouse the pursuer and the pursued the runner and the chaser to search for a

person who is missing or in hiding can be described as a hunt

grammar is probably the hardest part of English to grasp so I have decided to

take some parts of English grammar and look closely at each one for each full

English episode there will be one grammatical element to look at today we

will look at sentences English sentences fall into four types the statement the

question the order or request the exclamation the statement is a sentence

that gives information to state is to say and quite often saying means giving

information the car is travelling very fast the boy looks very unhappy these

are statements if information is being given or an observation is being made

then we are making a statement the question something means we make an

inquiry we need information so to get it we must first put forward a question if

you want to find out something you will almost always ask a question to

investigate something always involves asking questions is that car going too

fast did you see where that man went can you hear the plane flying over mr.

Duncan's head

to give an order or make a request is to ask for something to be done or not to

be done or to demand something don't be so rude don't drive so fast a request

can be in the form of a question but in this case information is not required to

ask someone to do something or tell them is an order it is a request an

exclamation is a sentence that shows surprise or shock it is often used to

show anger or rage you cheated on me how fast that car is going oh what a mess an

exclamation can also be put forward in the form of a question

the most common form of sentence is the statement this is because most sentences

pass on information conversation normally involves parting with

information or making comments which themselves are statements

Liam explores Cambridge, UK – On the go with EF #69 - Duration: 5:39.

Hi guys! I just got off the phone with my mom, there.

So, I made my way here to this beautiful town, Cambridge.

And what's Cambridge known for?

The university and its old buildings and beautiful architecture.

Cambridge University is made up of 31 colleges

and has an estimated student population of up to 20,000.

I heard the best way to explore Cambridge is to put on some great walking shoes. So, let's go.

I'm really excited to be in Cambridge because

one fun fact about me is that I really love old buildings and old architecture,

so I think this is going to be absolutely great.

The different colleges are scattered all over the town.

If you're like me and you don't have a great sense of direction,

you can stick to this street, King's Parade, where many of the colleges are lined up.

Now, what do we have here around the corner? This is Gonville and Caius College.

Look at the detail on those statues. I wonder what it was like to be one of those men.

Maybe one day I'll be on one of those buildings. That's my life goal.

This is the oldest and most influential college within Cambridge University.

It's crazy to think that this was built several hundreds of years ago

and it feels so high-tech, in a way.

We don't really make these kinds of buildings anymore and I think it's kind of a shame.

You can tell I like old buildings.

Alright, that's great. Let's move on and see what else Cambridge has to offer.

That is amazing. This makes me all warm and fuzzy inside.

I love these old buildings so much! Let's just cross the road now.

This looks like it must be King's College,

one of the most famous colleges in all of Cambridge.

When it was completed, it was only accessible to students of Eton,

a private school for the upper class English.

Nowadays, things are different. It actually has one of the highest intake rates

from state schools of any other Cambridge college.

Times can change!

Wow, so now we're on the inside. Let's go check out this building here, the Chapel.

This is absolutely fantastic.

You can see how much thought has been put into everything,

from the massive buildings over here to …. Even the grass here.

It looks like whoever mowed the lawn had a Ph.D., you know? Great stuff.

I wonder if I could buy this place. I should start saving up.

I could live here. I could.

Just a few minor adjustments and I could be comfortable here. It's up to my standards.

This building is absolutely stunning on the outside.

I need to go check it out on the inside.

This is amazing.

The patterns that we saw on the outside make a lot more sense

now when you see them here with colour.

It's just a big work of art. The colours are so vivid.

This is cool! This is crazy.

You know how I was saying it was big on the outside.

From the inside, it's even bigger.

This chapel was built in 1446 and has the world's biggest fan vault.

I can't imagine anything bigger than this, to be honest.

This is a prime example of English Gothic architecture and I love it.

It's got dragons and a dog … This is insane!

Is this where you sit and …

What happens here? This looks really … bougie.

This was the norm for some people back a couple of centuries ago.

Woops. That was close. I almost walked into some medieval building and ruined it.

That would have been tragic. You could have warned me!

Wow! That chapel was absolutely amazing. We need to build more churches like that.

Here's another college.

Imagine studying at this place.

This one is amazing as well.

They're all so big! One amazing building after another amazing building.

Wow! That chapel was really amazing, especially considering how long ago they built it.

What's your favourite building?

Leave a comment below and the best comment can win this: some English breakfast tea.

Make sure to watch the next vlog, guys. Bye!

Next week: Liam punts away

Learn English Words - 🔴 Late and Live - Wed 21st March 2018 - part 2 - Uses of 'set' - Duration: 28:05.

is there anyone there is there anyone there

I really hope there is can I just say sorry ever so sorry I don't know what

happened there but something went terribly wrong with the software so now

I am sitting in a slightly a more familiar place let just say a more

familiar setting oh hello there how nice to see you again

oh it I've missed you did you miss me I'm not sure what happened then it

wasn't my fault I can safely say it wasn't my fault it was sadly there is

one piece of software in my computer that keeps breaking and when that breaks

of course everything else stops working as well so it is the software that

allows me to do my streams and this is something that's been a problem for the

past few days because they have done an update this always happens when whenever

a software company updates their software there there is always a problem

of some sort so that's that's what's happening I'm very sorry about that

it is now what time is it it's ten minutes away from 11 o'clock and this is

I suppose you could call this part 2 of the live stream I'm very sorry about

that I really am very very sorry I hope that it didn't interrupt too much with

your enjoyment I'm just going to try something now if this doesn't work

please bear with me oh it does work now this is something I was hoping to do

tonight I was hoping to talk about a word at the English language that has

more definitions than virtually any other word and that word

sent cept can you see it on the screen the word set can be used as a verb and

also as a noun as well so let's have a quick look shall we

so if we use the word set as a verb it can often be used with objects and

usually with adverbial so for example you can use it instead of lai or stand

so you can set something Delanie set the mug of tea down Catharine set a chair by

the bed so you position something you put something in place you set it to be

set can also be situated or fixed in a specific place or position you can

represent a story play or film or scene as happening at a specified time or in a

specific place or specified place a private I novel set in Berlin so that is

the place in which the story occurs so you can see that the word set has

actually many many meanings many meanings indeed

it is a Wednesday night and it's mr. Duncan trying to sort out his computer I

did have a problem with the software I hope you can see me and hear me okay I

had to make a few changes at the very last moment but there you can see the

word that we are talking about tonight the word is sect I also had some

questions for you as well do you remember the question can you keep a

secret are you good at keeping secrets

let's see if the live chat is working shall we oh good

at least the live chat is working yes your computer is being very naughty

today that is true Carlos it is being very naughty indeed may him hello may

him what is going on I am late well don't worry you haven't missed much

because we had a slight problem with the computer or should I say the software so

the software that I used to stream this particular English lesson sadly it

decided to crash so because of that my whole live stream also crashed as well

how long are you going to stream today well we will see what happens we will

see how long I actually managed to stay on before the software crashes again

thanks for the live show you are welcome Abu now there were some questions that I

wanted to answer but sadly they have now disappeared from the live chat because I

have had to restart this particular life's livestream so I'm very sorry

about that you should have seen the chaos that was taking place a few

moments ago you won't believe what was happening

really I was running around I was pulling out wires I was plugging things

in I was connecting cameras I was turning lights on and I was trying to

work out what had happened so that was slightly annoying but I do

apologize for that Mohamad check our roll says please can you explain to me

the word latter well latter just means the last thing the letter the lest or

final thing that is it so the final thing or the last thing mentioned or the

thing that was mentioned last is the letter it is the last thing the letter

or of course if you name many things it is the last thing on the list that you

mentioned I hope I am good at keeping secrets

Natalija I hope you are good at keeping secrets as well can you keep a secret

right now can you keep a secret and that is that mr. Duncan that's me by the way

had a little bit of trouble with his computer tonight so please don't mention

that to anyone could you please keep that as a secret thank you very much

Rosa says today some parts of Brazil have had a blackout I believe some

students can't watch you tonight oh that's a shame but at least it's it's

quite pleasing to know that other people are having problems as well not just me

but I hope the electricity is connected very soon alex says my lips are sealed

my lips are sealed yes I like that expression if you say

that your lips are sealed it means that you will keep something to yourself so

if you keep your lips sealed it means you are keeping something to yourself it

is going to stay as a secret

Thank You Ana reto are you going to film another walk in the countryside well yes

maybe maybe who knows the weather is changing now as I mentioned before we

were rudely interrupted I am pretty excited at the moment because the

weather is turning lovely we had snow last week but the snow has gone

completely and today it was very very spring-like it was beautiful and on

Sunday we will take a look at some lovely views of springtime around the

area where I live so I hope you will enjoy that what is the difference

between in fur and in pot in part in fur and in part well in fur I've actually

made a lesson about this if you in first something you hint and impart means to

give you give information so that can be any information hello greetings from the

West Midlands oh hello there we have someone watching not very far away from

me grey zoo Oh Grizz Lu hello Grizz Lu whereabouts in

the West Midlands are you watching at the moment I am very interested to find

out where you are very interested indeed so could you tell me are you going I

think I've answered that question already

hello mr. Duncan I'm a newcomer Alvaro Alvaro 82 says I am a newcomer shall

will you say hello to me my name is Mohammed a about the meaning of the word

would patronize ah well if you patronize someone you talk to someone as if they

are inferior to you or maybe you talk to them in a very sarcastic way or

as if they are a child so if you patronize someone it means you talk down

to them you talk down to them you treat them as if they are not very clever

so you patronize someone you patronize someone so I hope that answers your

question the live chat is very busy at the moment

doo doo doo hello mr. Duncan I am listening to a live stream whilst I'm

working hello from Colombia we have a lay Judge system I don't know what that

means I don't want to be one of them because it would be hard for me to keep

a secret oh I see I'm not sure what you mean by lay judge I'm not quite sure

what that means but are you good at keeping secrets now I must admit I am

quite good at keeping secrets but I will tell you someone I will tell you a

person I will name a person right now someone who is not very good at keeping

secrets can you guess who it is

Oh mr. Steve that does not look very comfortable at all

Oh Deary me mr. Steve doing his exercises there did you see that

sadly no mr. Steve today I know a lot of people have been asking where is mr.

Steve sadly he isn't here he's very busy at the moment he is very busy he's off

doing something very important let's have a look at the live chat I need to

reconnect the live chat because for some reason after one hour

it always disconnects isn't that annoying I don't know what's happening

tonight everything seems to be going wrong here it is the live chat is up in

running but I am coping with everything like a professional mr. Steve yes mr.

Steve is not here but I'd hope you enjoyed watching him and doing his

exercises Carlos is here hello Carlos I'm not sure if I said hello to you

earlier but I will say hello to you now mr. Duncan I am late Aurora is here

hello Aurora don't worry you are not late in fact I have just had to restart

my whole live stream because there was a slight technical problem resolu or

grasso e says I am learning English from like a child but sometimes I have

problems with thinking in English how to fix it

generally I am polished and I have tried to stop thinking in my mother language

but it is my trouble so o are you saying that you are polish because sometimes

polish can be mistaken for polish so yes polish Thank You grits oui well of

course think of English or thinking in English comes

with practice and time it is very easy to keep thinking in your own language

and that is a problem it can be a big problem but of course over time the more

words and the more phrases that you learn connected to the English language

the easier it should over time become not always the case sometimes it takes a

little longer and sometimes it doesn't it really just depends on how you teach

or how you learn so if you teach slowly or learn slowly it will take longer it

will take much longer

what a strange night it started so well it really did start so well I hate

people who reveal secrets says Mohammed checker ooh yes me too and as I said

earlier mr. steve is not very good at keeping secrets

if I was honest mr. Steve is not at all good at keeping secrets in fact you can

ask him on Sunday you can ask him on Sunday whether or not he is good at

keeping secrets mr. Duncan could I ask you a question what is the difference

between monument and memorial well a monument is normally put in place as a

way of remembering something or marking something so memorial and monument are

often used in the same way so a monument is erected or built or put up as a way

of remembering a monumental moment or a memorable moment

so you could say monumental or memorable so to be honest those two words are very

similar in meaning so I hope that helps Ginny what is what is work

in class English I'm not quite sure what you mean by that is there such a thing

as working-class English do you mean working-class English language or do you

mean working-class people in England I'm not quite sure so I hope that I hope

that helps you some people are working-class in fact I

would say that most people in this country are working-class if they have

to work they will probably be classed as working-class I think so

greetings from my workplace in Colombia as always every Wednesday Suzie oh hello

Sergio thank you for joining us I've had a few problems with the actual

software so not the computer the computer was working okay

no problem with the computer the computer is fine but unfortunately the

software was having a slight problem which is a little bit annoying but it

looks as if it's settled down now so it looks as if everything is all

right with that would you like to see the visitors to my house this week I

have had such a problem this week with these creatures lady Birds everywhere in

my house at the moment they are everywhere hundreds and hundreds of lady

Birds are waking up at the moment because the weather is now getting warm

it is becoming warmer here in the UK and there you can see a lovely little Lady

Bird our maid is here hello our maid what happened I am back again what's

going on well armed' I had a slight problem with my software the software

that allows the livestream to take place unfortunately I'm not a professional but

I am learning English and I'm going to college so maybe it'll

be a good experience oh yes I think certainly mixing with other

people who are also interested in learning English is a very good thing

indeed definitely I would definitely recommend that your movies are more

useful and I can learn many new words or new vocabulary yes I think so

do I like animals do I like animals I love animals so much I love animals very

very much so we are looking at the word set let's have a look at some more words

some more ways of using set

something to be set to be situated or fixed in a specified place or a position

as we mentioned earlier so to be set somewhere it means to be in a specified

location or place you can also mount a precious stone someplace

something typically such as a piece of jewelry a bracelet set with emeralds so

a piece of jewelry something that is set into a piece of jewelry in printing you

can arrange something as required so you can say the compositors refused to set

the type for an editorial so you set something for printed as required as

required

Rek ab aller says I want to ask something if you can help me I need a

good way to link words well linking words often means using

sentences and we often say stringing sentences so you can string sentences

together that means you put words next to each other and you form sentences

grammar often involves stringing words together you string words to form

sentences why do you use the letter G sometimes well because you can because

you can so you don't just say singing singing you can say singing if you want

there's no law against it don't worry the police won't come around and arrest

you it's very interesting when people ask me these questions about pronouncing

words but in fact there are many ways to pronounce certain words and sometimes

people are very lazy with the way they pronounce words but often I will

pronounce the G at the end of certain words yes I do do it as to why I do it

it's because that's the way I speak English there are many ways to speak

English some accents leave certain sounds out whilst others other accents

include certain sounds so it's always worth remembering that

the live chat is gone requires and I'm very tired because it's incredibly late

and of course I've had some problems with my computer which I'm going to sort

out right now I am going to write a very angry letter a very angry letter indeed

to a certain company so I am going in a moment because I've had a few problems

here I mean Mika ode says I mean the citizen

judge system I still don't know what you mean by citizen judge system I'm not

quite sure what you mean by that do you mean society is that what you mean

so ordinary people who participate in the Justice I don't want to join it

because we must keep secrets oh I see okay okay yes maybe people who have to

attend a court case or something like that is that what you mean

so yes quite often you have to keep secrets if you are involved in something

to do with a trial in a court of law I think that's what you mean

good evening mr. Duncan this is the first one that I can catch you Muhammad

Saeed or Sayed thank you very much for that I've had one or two problems

tonight with the computer because the software that controls the live stream

broke unfortunately so I had a slight problem

very annoying in fact very annoying indeed it is coming up to what time is

it oh my god I think it's quite late isn't it look it's quarter past 11:00 at

night can you believe it I am going in a

moment because I have to sort out this computer I have

to sort out the software to make sure that it will work on Sunday because I

will be back on Sunday as you can see behind me you can see the times there I

am live every Sunday 2 p.m. UK time and every Wednesday you can catch me right

here on YouTube from 10 p.m. UK time hopefully next Wednesday everything will

be ok and of course on Sunday I will be here from 2 p.m. mr. Steve will be back

as well you will be pleased to hear we will talk a little bit more about the

word set on Sunday hopefully we won't have any problems then I'm going now

this is mr. Duncan in the birthplace of English saying thanks for watching I'm

sorry about the problems but I will be back on Sunday hopefully everything will

be all right then until then you know what's coming next of course that's

what's coming next ta ta for now 8-)

South Korean advance team heads to Pyongyang to inspect concert venues - Duration: 0:36.

South Korea sent a group of inspectors to the North to check out the facilities for

the concerts by its artists.

The team boarded a flight from Beijing and headed off to Pyongyang earlier today on the

North Korean carrier Air Koryo.

During the three-day stay, the six-person team, comprised of professional stage managers

and government officials, will inspect the two venues -- with a focus on technical aspects

such as lighting, stage and sound.

Seoul's 160-member troupe will fly to Pyongyang at the end of the Month to put on the first

concert by South Koreans on North Korean soil in 13 years.

S. Korean military authorities exclude key exercises from Seoul-Washington joint military drills - Duration: 2:28.

Seoul's military authorities released the schedules of the annual joint military drills

with Washington on Tuesday,... stressing that this year's drills won't be smaller... despite

their shorter duration.

But, it appears the authorities separated a couple of key exercises from the annual

drills... to shorten the total period.

Oh Jung-hee reports.

On Tuesday, South Korea's military authorities released the schedules of the upcoming Seoul-Washington

joint military drills.

( 1)Key Resolve, a computerized simulation exercise, will be held for two weeks starting

mid-April...

( 2)and Foal Eagle,... for four weeks starting April 1st.

In the case of Foal Eagle, the duration this year is half that of last year's.

But despite that, Seoul's defense ministry had stressed... the drills will be at a similar

level to those of previous years.

"The exercises will begin on April 1st and be at a similar level to previous years."

But on Wednesday,... it was reported... that this year's Foal Eagle **excluded a couple

of key drills... that were previously included.

One of them is Freedom Banner, a Navy and Marine Corps logistical deployment exercise.

The exercise is to be held as normal in May.

But for this year, the drill has been separated from Foal Eagle -- unlike the past few years

where it was conducted as part of the Foal Eagle drills.

"The training is to be conducted solely by the U.S. side, so it is not appropriate for

us to answer that question.

But South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff says this year's Foal Eagle does not include Freedom

Banner."

A similar case is Max Thunder,... an annual air exercise conducted by Seoul and Washington,...

that's held for two weeks in mid-May.

It's been regarded as part of the annual joint drills for the past two years,... but for

this year, it has also been separated.

The South Korean military answered...

"It'd be problematic if we didn't hold the drills.

But we are conducting the drills, and we believe we could be flexible on a few things."

If the exercises -- Freedom Banner and Max Thunder -- were included in this year's annual

drills,... then the Foal Eagle would've lasted for almost two months.

But Seoul's military authorities chose not to name them as part of Seoul-Washington joint

military drills... which, many say, is not to cause friction in the run-up to inter-Korean

talks and Washington-Pyongyang talks in the next two months.

Oh Jung-hee, Arirang News.

Clean water: continuing a family legacy - Duration: 2:03.

In this lake, my father made more than 2,000 dives with submarines to explore

ways to protect the environment because water was always a big concern for him

can you imagine that there was a time in the 60s where the governments

wanted to dump radioactive waste in the water, in the deepest trenches

and when my father discovered traces of life in the bottom of the Mariana Trench

eleven kilometres down when he was diving with his bathyscaphe, that was the beginning

of the moment where it started to be prohibited to drop the waste

into the deepest trenches.

So that was a milestone for the protection of the environment

and technology was part of this milestone

Clean water is linked to clean energy

Why is that?

because when you produce fossil energy, you waste a lot of water

which is not the case for renewable energy

and also when you have clean energy that is affordable

you can desalinate water

transport water

purify water

and recycle water

so in the end if you go for renewable energy

you can guarantee the future of water

there are thousands of solutions that are

profitable to protect the environment, to protect water

and these solutions very often are not well known

they are not implemented

The goal of the Solar Impulse Foundation

is to bring all these solutions to the awareness of the people

and include them to have much more modern energy policies

and environmental targets

On water day, I invite you to submit all the

solutions you have if they are efficient and if they are profitable

Netflix is one of the biggest online streaming platforms in the world with over 117 Million

Users as of December 2017.

The success of the company is something which can be clearly seen and many of it's original

shows and movies have been well received by audiences, and at the same time this does

not mean that there are not flops among the good eggs.

As the service continues to grow more and more and people continue to join the Netflix

bandwagon, it is indeed interesting to consider how far the company has come since it was

initially established all the way back in 1997.

Yes, 1997.

Netflix is over 30 Years old being established in August of 1997.

The streaming service which we know of today actually started out as a DVD rental service

and has transitioned over time to become what it is today.

Things change, and change for Netflix has lead to many good things for the company.

The website itself has gone through many transitions throughout its lifetime and what the Terms

"NET" and "FLIX" meant were a bit different.

They were not thought of as once complete thing but more as two apart entities.

On one of the oldest website versions there was a feature known as FlixFinder which was

considered to be the site's take on the search bar.

Indeed pretty interesting.

The company was founded by none other than Reed Hastings and a software executive named

Marc Randolph.

As stated the purpose of the service was to offer online movie rentals.

The web service itself was launched one year later in 1998, and titled netflix.com.

Back then you could subscribe and have access to unlimited DVDs which would be sent to your

house.

Netflix was the biggest rival to Blockbuster which was a major chain that rented films,

games and TV box sets.

And yes, this was the time when people actually used physical copies of movies on DVD disks

instead of just streaming it online.

Barbaric, I know.

The service also had a feature where it would use Netflix members' ratings to accurately

predict choices for all Netflix members.

So think of it kinda like rotten tomatoes, but just a little bit better.

Maybe.

Later on this system was attempted to be changed but I will get to that in a short while.

In 2002 netflix hit a huge at the time number of over 700,000 subscribers and that was good

for the website.

In the next three years the company would grow to over 4.2 million users.

Netflix had a monthly subscription system through which customers could get whatever

DVDs they wanted for a low monthly fee and By 2004, Netflix began to settle into its

signature look, but it was still firmly in the pre-streaming era.

One of the biggest things which drew consumers to the company was the fact that they would

charge no late fees — "EVER!"

Which was pretty good for business.

In 2006 netflix held a contest to come up with new ideas for their recommendation system

and it was called the "$1 Million Netflix Prize".

It's main goal was to allow members of the public to come up with a new idea for their

recommendation algorithm.

Shortly after, a seven man team won this competition but interestingly enough their idea was not

used.

In 2007 Netflix introduced streaming, which allowed members to instantly watch television

shows and movies on their PCs.

This was the birth of the new age of Netflix which we now know.

Netflix used to have a production department called Red Envelope Entertainment that played

a prominent role in the broadcast of independent films, but it closed in 2008.

By 2008, Netflix begin partnering with consumer electronics companies to stream on the Xbox

360, Blu-ray disc players and TV set-top boxes and by 2009 Netflix partnered with consumer

electronics companies to stream on the PS3, Internet connected TVs and other Internet

connected devices.

In 2010 Netflix became available in Canada, with Latin America and the Caribbean being

added the following year.

That was the same year that Netflix began creating its own original content - starting

with House of Cards, which debuted in 2013.

Stranger Things, Glow, Orange Is The New Black and The Crown are just some of the other successful

Netflix Originals since.

Interestingly enough, the service grew to over 20 Million Subscribers by 2010.

A huge number even by today's standards.

By 2011, it was clear that streaming had become the main focus of the company.

In an attempt to split its streaming department and DVD sales department apart, the company

created what was known as the Qwuickster for DVD distribution, but unsurprisingly, within

a month of it being established it was shut down due to consumer protests.

By 2012 Netflix became available in Europe including the United Kingdom, Ireland and

in the Nordic Countries.

The company would soon go on to win many awards such as its first Primetime Emmy Engineering

Award, three more Primetime Emmy Awards for house of cards and numerous other nominations

for other awards.

Netflix was actually the first internet TV network nominated for the primetime Emmy.

By 2014 Netflix would have over 50 Million Members Globally and the company would continue

to expand more and more.

By 2016 Netflix was available worldwide and the company would continue to expand to this

day.

A long journey but the effort placed into the company was worth it and eventually lead

to the success which we know of today.

Top office's Constitution amendment bill proposes four-year, two-term presidency - Duration: 3:13.

The top office has been unveiling the contents of its proposed revision of the Constitution

all week.

Today's focal point: changes to the government structure... namely a four-year, two-term

presidency,... instead of the current one-term, five-year system.

Hwang Hojun zooms in on the third and final part of that summary.

If the government's proposed revision to the Constitution is ultimately approved, South

Korea will see a major change in role of the President, the length of his or her term in

office, and a shift in the balance of power between the branches of government.

"Now is the time to implement a four year, two-term presidential system to bring about

responsibility in politics and the stable management of state affairs.

This is the will of the people."

Thirty years ago, when the South Korean Constitution was last amended in 1987, the President's

term of office was limited to five years with no possibility of reelection.

That stipulation was put in as South Korea came out of a long period of military dictatorship.

But today, the Blue House stressed that times are different now, as exemplified by the so-called

"candlelight revolution" and its culmination last year.

The Moon administration said that the Korean people are way ahead of the nation's politicians

when it comes to the ability to practice democracy, and so it's proposing a four-year, two-term

presidency.

However, the Blue House emphasized that the new system will be applied starting with President

Moon Jae-in's successor; the government's proposal stipulates that Moon's term will

end, as currently scheduled, on May 9th, 2022.

If the new system is adopted, the number of national elections taking place during a single

Presidency will change as well.

Currently, the national leader's five years in office start with the Presidential election,

which is then followed by a local election and a general election.

The government's proposal will have the Presidential and local elections take place concurrently,

starting four years from now,... the general election serving as a mid-term evaluation.

However, the ability of the president to serve a second term if reelected doesn't necessarily

mean more power to the executive.

In fact, the government's amendment would significantly curtail presidential power.

For example, as of now, the Constitution gives both the executive and the legislature the

authority to introduce bills.

That would change -- the government's poposal gives more authority over legislation to the

National Assembly.

The President will still be able to submit a bill... but only with the consent of ten

or more lawmakers.

Also, the government's bill seeks to change the president's formal, international role.

The president will no longer be called the Head of State, but rather a representative

of the state to foreign nations.

The government included those changes to respond to a public outcry over the high concentration

of power in the presidency... and the corruption seen to result from that.

The government's bill will also lower the voting age to 18.

Until now it was 19, contingent on laws passed by the Assembly.

The Blue House ended by urging the National Assembly to comply with the people's demands

and fully review and discuss the government's proposal,... and if necessary,...

Parliament should propose its own amendment.

The government will submit its proposal on Monday.

Hwang Hojun, Arirang News.
