The miserable generation Smartphones make children unhappy, screen time should be limited

to 2 hours per day, study finds

According to a recent study, teenagers who spend too much time on their smartphones are

unhappier.

Scientists from San Diego State University (SDSU) advised teenagers to spend less than

two hours daily on digital media so they can �boost their happiness and self-esteem.�

This means minimizing time spent playing computer games, on social media, texting, or video

chatting.

The researchers believe that adolescents could be happier if they started exercising more

and met their friends face-to-face.

In the study, the researchers determined that teenagers who are on digital media most of

the time were unhappier compared to adolescents who were more active and spent more time on

�non-screen activities like sports, reading newspapers and magazines, and in-the-flesh

interactions.� They added that screen time was influencing unhappiness rather than making

teenagers happier.

Professor Jean Twenge, the study�s lead author, shares that while the study �can�t

show causation,� earlier studies have confirmed that being more active on social media can

cause unhappiness.

However, unhappiness doesn�t always cause increased social media use.

A reasonable balance between digital media use and happiness can be maintained with limited

screen time.

Professor Twenge adds that spending less than two hours daily on social media will benefit

teenagers in the long run.

Spending more time exercising and meeting up with friends � two activities reliably

linked to greater happiness � will do wonders for their overall mood.

Professor Twenge, along with colleagues from the University of Georgia, studied data from

the Monitoring the Future (MtF) longitudinal study.

The MtF study was a nationally representative survey of over �a million U.S. school children

aged 13 to 14, 15 to 16, and 17 to 18.�

The pupils surveyed reported the amount of time they spent on gadgets like phones and

computers.

The teenagers also answered questions about �in-the-flesh social interactions and their

overall happiness.�

The findings of the study determined that the happiest teenagers often limited their

daily digital media time to less than one hour daily.

Spending more than an hour on digital media was linked to increased unhappiness.

(Related: �Smartphone detox� shown to relieve stress and anxiety � similar to

detoxing from other addictions.)

Compared to historical trends from the same age groups since the 1990s, the researchers

discovered that the popularity of gadgets like smartphones over time were also connected

to the decrease in �reported happiness� among teenagers.

Study participants born after 2000 were reportedly less satisfied with life, had lower self-esteem,

and were unhappier, unlike the teenagers who grew up in the 1990s.

Starting in 2012, the average teenager�s life satisfaction, self-esteem, and happiness

have dipped drastically.

Interestingly, 2012 marked the point when the proportion of Americans who had smartphones

went up more than 50 percent for the first time.

Professor Twenge cautions that the biggest change in the lives of adolescents occurred

from 2012 and 2016 when they spent more time on social media and spent less time sleeping

and participating in social activities.

She concluded, �The advent of the smartphone is the most plausible explanation for the

sudden decrease in teens� psychological well-being.�

Tips for a �digital detox� Worried that your kids are spending too much

time on their smartphones?

Try some of the digital detoxing tips below:

Trade screen time with fun activities � Exercise might seem boring to adolescents, but doing

�fun� activities will get them off of their phones faster.

Join them for bike rides, dog walks, or shoot some hoops instead.

Ban screens in bedrooms � Keep all screens and handheld devices away from the bedroom.

Beeps, vibrations, or bursts of light from a phone (even if you�re just checking the

time) could interrupt a sleep cycle.

Give them regular alarm clocks instead.

Keep mealtimes phone-free � Make sure you spend quality time as a family during meals

by putting away your smartphones.

Gradually reduce screen time � Determine your family�s average screen time, then

cut it by 30 minutes weekly until you reach your target.

When you set firm �screen time limits,� it will be easier to get the kids to sleep

on time.

Lead by example � If your kids see you spending less time on your phones, chances are they�ll

do the same thing.

The new tariff on steel and aluminum caused quite an uproar, with EU, China and Canada

basically saying two can play that game.

This could mark the start of a global 'trade war."

Some experts predict a long-term negative impact on Korea's economy.

For details we turn to our Lee Jeong-yeon.

The off-the-cuff announcement by U.S. President Donald Trump that he would impose heavy tariffs

on all steel imports,... has already set off a ripple of responses from world leaders.

The EU, Canada, and China have said that if these tariffs are finalized, they will take

reciprocal measures to impose taxes on American products.

There is evident tension between the U.S. and China.

Beijing says it's ready to impose tariffs on American agricultural products, an apparent

move targeting U.S. farmers,... who are an important support base for President Trump.

The threat of a trade war is particularly concerning for South Korea as more than 80%

of its GDP comes from trade.

"The U.S. and China make up around 35% of South Korea's total exports.

So if both countries start adopting protectionist measures, it would be a blow to Korean industries

that rely on exports to those countries, such as cars, electronics, and steel."

Meanwhile, the EU has said it would start looking to impose tariffs on American products

like Harley Davidson motorcycles, bourbon whiskey and Levi's jeans.

Canada, the number one steel exporter to the U.S., has also said it's ready to take reciprocal

action if tariffs are imposed on its steel and aluminum products.

The Seoul government expects further tariffs on cars and semi-conductors, as Trump sees

the car industry as the sector in which South Korea saw the greatest trade surplus with

the U.S..

To this, South Korean President Moon Jae-in said:

"We will deal with it with confidence that we can overcome anything if the government

and businesses cooperate."

Experts say that aiming for multi-lateral negotiations would be the best way for South

Korea to minimize trade blows in the long-run.

"South Korea should proactively participate in trade deals such as the Trans-Pacific Partnership,

or mega-regional FTAs, for the long-term growth of its economy."

N. Korea announces list of its Paralympics delegation - Duration: 1:49.

The two Koreas will again march as one when the curtains are raised for the 2018 Winter

Paralympics Games.

Compared to the Winter Olympics that ended last month, North Korea will be sending a

smaller delegation.

Ji Myung-kil has the full story.

Kim Mun-chol, the chair of the North Korean Federation for the Protection of the Disabled

will lead a four member delegation of officials from its Paralympics Committee.

Besides the officials, 20 other people, including six athletes, will comprise Pyongyang's Paralympic

delegation.

They will enter into South Korea on Wednesday using the western land route.

"North Korean athletes will participate in the cross-country skiing events on March 11th

and 14th and return home around March 15th."

The International Paralympic Committee invited North Korea to the PyeongChang Winter Paralympics,

and offered two bipartite slots to athletes to compete in Para Nordic skiing events.

Sit-skiers Kim Jong-hyon and Ma Yu-chol were given the spots.

At the Paralympics opening ceremony... the two Koreas will once again march under the

Korean Unification Flag -- which bears the image of a sky-blue Korean Peninsula against

a white background.

They will be the last group among the 49 countries to enter the stadium.

The two Koreas reached an agreement regarding North Korea's participation in the PyeongChang

Paralympics during working-level talks on February 27th.

Pyongyang will not be sending an art troupe and a cheering squad for the Paralympics.

PyeongChang will host the largest Paralympics so far... with 5-hundred-70 athletes from

49 countries having confirmed their participation.

And she works really hard with the Justice League to help protect planet Earth where the woman is awesome time for

Cool, it's a movie at this box looks like a little milk carton. It's so cute and look

How to have prospects know you (not just know about you) - Duration: 2:33.

- What's the difference between a prospect knowing

about your business and actually knowing your business?

Well, it's all the difference in the world.

Hi, I'm John Durso, president of Crosshatch Creative,

and this is Be Bold, Be Smart,

all about inbound marketing for consulting firms.

Knowing about your business is just knowing

a list of facts about your business.

They know that you exist, your prospect may know

what services you offer, who you offer them for,

how long you've been in business, even,

maybe they know some of the past results

that you've gotten for other clients.

But all this still amounts to

just some facts about your business.

It's distinct from knowing your business

in the way that you might know a place or a good friend.

And that's really what's gonna make the difference

and have a prospect actually reach out

and want to work with you, versus knowing facts

and being still lumped in the same pool as everybody else.

So how do you get a prospect to know your business

and not just know about your business?

Well, first, you want to choose the right media.

Different types of media allow different amounts of you

to come across to the consumer.

So on one end, you have the telegraph,

where only the information comes across,

and nothing of the personality or anything like that

gets translated through.

And then, on the other end of the spectrum,

you might have virtual reality,

where there's a whole world created that they live inside,

and can experience everything that you have to offer there.

But in between, we have all these other,

more realistic options, like blog posts,

podcasts, videos, things like that.

So you want to choose the media that has you come across.

So we recommend podcasts and video,

because that's where someone's getting a sense

of your mannerisms, your cadence,

what you actually look like, in the case of video,

and that's what's gonna have them actually know you,

much more so than reading a blog post

or looking at infographics, for example.

Now, number two, and this is actually even more important

than number one, be real and open.

If you're not real and open

when you're trying to have someone get to know you,

it's not gonna work, you're defeating the purpose.

So really, if you're not willing to do that,

don't even try, because it'll be a waste of time.

If you do do that, you will see results from people

who actually feel like they know you

before they even talk to you.

So my challenge to you right now is to sit down

in front of a camera, in front of a microphone,

even in front of a blank page, and be real,

be open and genuine, and get yourself down on

whatever media you've chosen, and put that out there.
