For the first time ever, Facebook revealed the rulebook it uses to determine what content

stays on the site and what gets taken down.

On Tuesday, the social media giant published the lengthy guidelines its moderators use

to decide what content is unacceptable — including hate speech, nudity and graphic violence.

A shorter explanation of these rules was previously available online.

But Facebook says it unveiled the full version to help users understand where the company

draws the line on "nuanced issues."

Facebook has been accused of not being transparent enough when it comes to determining what content

should be banned from the site.

Most recently, the company faced backlash for censoring videos from two sisters known

as Diamond and Silk.

The two make videos praising President Donald Trump.

In addition to publishing these guidelines, Facebook is also adding a way for users to

appeal its decisions on individual posts that have been removed.

Making Lavender Castille Soap - Duration: 11:05.

Hello everybody this is Ariane Arsenault from La Fille de la Mer in the Magdalen Islands,

Quebec, Canada! Today I am going to present to you the making of one of the

soaps that I make in my shop that is very very simple. it's called Pure Olive

and there are only two ingredients in this soap besides the lye water.

My stock pot is right now filled with extra virgin olive oil and here will go some

lavender essential oil. And that's it! It is a castile soap meaning that the base

oil is 100% olive oil and it will need to dry for a long time

before it's ready to be sold because olive oil will make a soap that will

kind of go mushy really quickly once you use it if it's not dried properly.

Usually you would dry these soaps from six to twelve months. Mine goes on the

six month drying period because I cut back in some of the water from my

lye water so that I can have it ready on time for summer. Let's take a look at

the making of this soap. Here's my stockpot I'm putting it on the stove top

and I'm gonna slightly warm the base oil just so that my lye water and my base

oil are nearly the same temperature when they meet each other. This will be

only warmed slightly. Oh then check this out! This is a KitchenAid commercial

series immersion blender that was sent to me by KitchenAid it was given to me

as a gift! These are just like the small ones except they're bigger and

commercial. This this is my small KitchenAid that I have. We can

compare the size. The shaft here is also removable let me try and remove it

There we go it's removable so I can wash the bottom part of it and I'm gonna

have to put it back on. I need something to protect my hands to do this!

it's very metallic! it is really sharp here. Yeah this is gonna be the first

time that I'm trying out this new stick blender so if I put it right beside my

stockpot no longer will I have the edge of my stick blender kind of dipping in

the raw soap and whenever I make my big big batches in my new pot tipper it's

also gonna be much easier to work with so I'm gonna plug this baby in and we're

gonna make some soap okay I'm all ready to make this soap first thing I'm gonna

do is I'm gonna add my essential oil into the mix and I'm gonna make sure

that this is well dispersed within the oil and there's a safety switch on top

so if I try to press it it won't work so I need to unlock choose my speed setting

and I want it to be on low right now is it on low it wasn't low so even low is

pretty high I'm gonna show you worth it and so this is the slow setting

and here fast-setting okay so you know go get my lye water and add it to this

oil and lavender mixture make sure this is unload because the high sitting is

pretty high I think I'm gonna keep the high setting for when I use my big pot

tipper but no I'm going to add my lye water which has cooled down I'm gonna

try to pour this down the shaft of my stick blender just like I usually do

this immersion blender is so powerful that whenever I press the button to make

it go on it kind of pulls to the bottom like when I make a castile soap I like

to tour at a medium to fit trace otherwise like the next day when I

unmold and cut myself it's kind of crumbly so here you can see that the

texture is really nice and thickly this is what I'm looking for I'm gonna turn

it off blenders wait can't go on anymore

and I'm gonna remove the excess from the stick blender and make sure it goes all

into my part

tap tap cuz you never want to go into a stick blender with a spatula when it is

plugged in even though you know that you turned it off

because this soap is a little thick I'm gonna kind of smooth out the top you

guys are late hi Joyce hmm I'm gonna take a little spatula and try and smooth

out the top of my soup

I have cut the soaps once and the final bar soap that I want to be and creating

is this sighs this is actually one of my pure olive soaps from last year and it's

really hard and rock solid and still smells awesome all right let's put these

back in the cutter

I would like to thank KitchenAid Canada for giving me this amazing and huge

immersion blender and I did like using it it was the first time the only

difference with my regular tiny KitchenAid stick blenders is that it

really is strong so it does cause the soap to accelerate and trace faster so

next time rather than just like blending all the way in I think it will pulse but

this will be an amazing tool like any new tool I need to learn how to work

with it but soon it'll be my new best friend thank you so much for watching

the making of this lavender castile soap in our shop we call it pure olive it is

such a nice and lovely soap it doesn't lather much but it's really

moisturizing olive oil will create soaps that have really tight and little

bubbles but it's so nice and a different feeling on the skin you should totally

try a castile soap if you've never done so if you liked the video please give it

a thumbs up you can ask me questions in the comment section below and within the

first 24 hours of releasing a video I always try to answer as many questions

as I can and then once in a while I'll go back to the video and see if I have

any more questions if you're not already subscribed to my channel please click

the subscribe button right there and I will see you soon in my next video bye

Meet the Camelot Technology Team - Duration: 4:23.

Hi I'm Greg and I'm the Head of Business Relations in the Camelot Technology team

we power the games of the National Lottery, the games that change lives

Technology is the engine that powers Camelot and The National Lottery for

millions of players, thousands of retailers and hundreds of employees and

this is the team that makes it all work

it's a great team and we really enjoy a challenge and we've got a really big and

important job on our hands. To start with we look after some really cool tech...

there are the gaming systems and these games make millionaires and it's not

just about the winners in operating the National Lottery Camelot delivers on

average 30 million pounds a week to good causes and there are the systems used by

our 47,000 retailers across the UK, there are a lot of people counting on us to

get this right. This here is the kit behind The National Lottery website it

has to work really hard on draw nights

and this is one of the machines we use to do the Lotto draw! It's not all about

hardware, some of us work in the Cloud taking advantage of the scalability and

the capacity that cloud brings to our big data platform, then there's the

systems we look after the National Lottery website, the Camelot group

website, SAP, big data, G-Suite and lots of other system that keep Camelot

ticking. So that's what we do now let's meet some of the team. We have two main

areas of focus in the Technology team, business as usual activities - keeping

Camelot running, fixing problems as they arise and keeping the systems patched,

optimised and secure, and the second is working on projects whether it's new

technologies or commercial projects like game launches. The National Lottery

website is one of the top ecommerce sites in the UK so it can be really

exciting to work on. We're a 24 / 7 business, our busiest times of the week are

Friday and Saturday evenings when most people buy their tickets and the main

Lottery draws take place. During draw periods or when we have rollovers we

get huge traffic spikes as customers rush to buy

their tickets so it's important that we're available to support it should

anything go wrong and to make sure things run smoothly so flexibility around

working is essential. My favorite thing about working at Camelot is its size

being a medium-sized company there's plenty of opportunity to work alongside

your colleagues, you feel valued and what you say really counts. I love working at

Camelot because of the people and the amazing things we do. Camelot values quality it isn't about

the amount of hours you sit at your desk, it's about what you achieve that really

counts, Camelot gives me time to be with my family when they need me and in

the same way I'm with Camelot when it needs me, it'll be hard to match the

flexibility that Camelot can give me. So I tend to get in early on the morning

leave early in the evening and then I get to spend a nice long evening with the

kids it's great. Camelot's a unique organisation one of the great things

about working here is you're in a position to change people's lives in a

very direct way, we're a small team but we're working on something really big. We

keep The National Lottery website running smoothly so our players can enjoy

their favourite Lottery Games. We build the games and keep them running, without

us you couldn't buy a ticket or claim a prize and for our players and in

particular our winners that is HUGE, we also ensure our employees have everything they

need to keep things running smoothly so that we can offer our players and the

Good Causes we support the very best experience. Like I said it's a great team

Camelot really is the place to do your best work. So if you like what you see

and you want to help us power the games please get in touch!

you

Sweet Sesame Chicken Easy Slow Cooker Recipe - Mind Over Munch - Duration: 1:48.

(bright music)

- Hey Munchies,

more slow cooker meals, you say?

This sweet sesame chicken will not let you down

and the rice is in the actual meal.

For prep, I add to a freezer bag

onion, broccoli, cauliflower, carrots,

honey, soy sauce, ketchup, sesame oil and salt and pep.

I refrigerate or freeze until ready to use.

(bright music)

- [Joe] Hey wait.

- What? - What do you call

a broccoli ghost?

- What?

- [Joe] Cauliflower.

(spring popping)

(Joe yelling)

- Then I can all of that to a slow cooker

along with my chicken thighs and some broth.

Now, I could add the broth to the freezer bag too

but sometimes if it's a larger amount,

I'll wait until cooking

so that I don't have to deal with

all of the liquid in the bag or worry about it leaking.

I cover and let that go all day.

Before serving I come back,

remove the chicken from the cooker

and stir in some instant brown rice.

Then I return the chicken and cover.

Let it stand for five to 10 minutes

until the rice is tender,

stir and serve.

This dish is sweet and savory

with an Asian-inspired flair that tastes delicious

but I especially love that the rice

can easily be added at the end

and doesn't need to be cooked separately.

So cool.

What an easy way to get my balanced meal.

This recipe and all of the recipes from this series

can be found in my newest meal prep e-book,

you can check it out at mindovermunch.com/ebooks

and if you do get it, you'll also get the coupon

to discount the price of the e-book

off of my Meal Prep Ignite course

the next time enrollment opens.

I'll see you tomorrow for a new episode.

And remember, it's all a matter of mind over munch.

Your Security in South Africa | Craig Roseveare - Duration: 22:48.

It is very clear what kind of security measures that are needed in South Africa.

You see houses with barbed wire and electric fences all over, there are also

surveillance cameras and private armed guards that patrols the areas.

But there are also security measures that are not so visible - which have more to do with behavior,

that can be very difficult for us Swedes and Europeans to understand.

A book that serves as an eye opener in this regard is "Your Security in South Africa".

We will meet the author of the book, the former police officer Craig Roseveare.

I'm sitting here with Craig Roseveare where it's not how we pronounce it Roseveare Roseveare

is a former police officer and

You recently wrote a book about

your personal safety of security here in South Africa

can tell me why you decided to write this book and

Absolutely journals, and the book. I started writing in

2016 and it was due to the prolific

former texts and four murders in and around the district that I live and

the country South Africa in general and

And it was it was due to the the increase in the level of violence associated with the attacks

And then a personal friend of man was also involved

he was also attacked and

Shot through the jaw it's an you know

it's all tool in the book that I wrote which is titled your security in South Africa and

And I just felt that it wasn't it wasn't enough just to try and and talk to people head

I wanted I felt compelled to get the message through

to as many South Africans as possible because

One of the things that we are going through in South Africa is a form of violence

that is so so intense that you've got you've got you've got rape torture murder and

The South African people, I think a lot of southern people are not aware

Well though if they are where they are not prepared so the message in my book goes to awareness and preparedness

in a country that

Is where the crime rates and the murder rates are so high that you can compare them to a country at war yeah?

and you of course bring in some experience as a police officer and

Can you tell me your experience working in the police

Dealing with this kind of crime where why aren't the police corps here in South Africa?

Effective enough to deal with this crime wave that is facing the white Afrikaners

Well um

Yes, and I do come from a police background

I was a member of the of right unit 8 reaction unit in the early nineteen nineties

We've seen considerable change over the years

I think a lot of it

Could be to do with the resources

the training of the South African Police Force members the support that they getting as well from high up and

Yeah the that that results in a situation where

They're innocent citizens of South Africa and in particular

the farmers are left and

are basically left unprotected and

for them to rely on the authorities being the police force and

You know other?

military authorities that we have in South Africa

They'd be living under sort of false sense of security yeah

Because that was one thing that struck me when I read your book is that your advice

in the routine if you're

feeling danger at your form that you should first call your neighbor and then second you should call your security company and

Only further lost you should call the police

Unfortunately the that has become a reality

South Africa, South Africa has

more private security companies than

any other country in the world and

that in itself is an indication of

the effectiveness unfortunately

of our authorities and

You know one looks at the commitment of the authorities, but I believe that

So much more needs to be done

to to get the authorities back to the level that they should be and

and especially when it comes to the the level of crime the level of of

serious and violent crime that that is plaguing South Africa and

They they have been above hood. I don't want to go into it, but the political situation

But they have been outclassed many aircrafts towards

You know as support to the farmers especially on the stamping because they are that the farmers are living in secluded

areas and

It's very difficult for them so the reaction term of the authorities as well

Is is not where it should be there is no doubt about this sir, so what can they be done? What is the practical?

Examples that they lift up in your book the practical examples

Is that a user quote that people need to repeat? Which is if it is to be it's up to me and

Basically that means that the farmers themselves

Have then have now got to look at very very seriously

They've got to look at from the level of awareness

to the level of preparedness

they've gotten a look at looking after themselves and

because by the term

the

Authorities bring the police and even all those good things which are very very necessary

being the security companies and a lot of they're there and the the

The things that will help them in a situation like that being alarm systems etc

You know by the time the reaction comes it's too late

Those those situations be at the police and even security companies cannot cannot

Permanently look after the farmer or the innocent person in South Africa these the

the brazenness of the criminal is

now such that they are coming in and

They are not they are not scared so the former has to prepare himself that he is going to take action

So the former will be its own bodyguard

Exactly yes

the farmers must in the farmer or innocent person or and you know it now has to has to use systems where and

if you look at

if you look at the different

mental phases and it starts from a chatter a change of

The the the meant the mental the mental change towards the whole aspect is that?

You've got different different

mental phases that you need to look at for example in the book gets quoted and the farmer texts actually and

That you've got a green a green zone where you're not laughing

They'll be attacked for example will be sitting now in at latitude your text will be probably in the green zone

you've got a yellow zone where you couldn't possibly be attacked and

Then the farmer needs to be in what we call a orange zone when you're expecting protect in a technique so expect

unexpected then obviously a red zone is when you are under attack so the farmer needs to live in a constant and a constant and

a situation of of them of

Orange sound where he's expecting an attack at any time and in the book that thing it goes further to explain

To guard person as to what to do

But how do we manage this dressed level of being in this jello zone on a permanent basis?

It's it's it's it has to be a change of mindset

Which the book God's a person through?

It has to be a change of mindset because if one does not have that change of mindset yes

It is a stress level and it can be seen by some people as being paranoid

But there's another phrase that I have a little paranoia leads to a longer laugh

And we we the innocent people of South Africa let ourselves down

by

Burying our heads on the sand and pretending that this is not going to happen and yet it's happening all over the place

So that fear that you are living in yes

it's very real, and it's not understood by a lot of people a lot of people choose to ignore it and

It's not natural. It's not normal. It's civilized people should be living in a situation like this

But I'll go back to it to something that are quite all the time. It's reality yeah, and if one doesn't rise to that occasion

Change one's Manset

Then then then people are highly lucky to become victims of serious and violent crime in South Africa at the moment

Because it's two aspects that you

basically brings up one of the

hard structure of having offence and having the alarm system and point and other is the way you move and think and

regardless

daily routine of

Can you just talk us through how?

Like a Monday morning you as a family father

What are you thinking when you go up and what you need to do?

Well, we talk about routine we talk about the different structures the different

security

Plans that you have to put in place because as I set as I call the book your

Security in South Africa, and that's referring to each and every person

for example now and the typical South African and

Thus being urban or rural?

would wake up in the morning and

You would wake up to

What I call a cell gates which is a gate that cordons off your sleeping quarters?

From the rest of your house, and I call it a soul gate because you're almost imprisoning yourself

But protecting yourself behind the soul gate

so that if criminals do breach from any other part of your house, and this has got to be well planned and

That's why I referred to a weird awareness and preparedness

If you're aware it means your mindset has changed Wood has to be

The preparedness is now putting these things in place and as you see it the routine after that okay

And we can talk about routine, but let's good lord. Let's rather talk about habit

Yeah needs to come into them to action. There is that you've got now but a

Soul gate which

segregates caps off your your sleeping quarters

You've now got to go through

That's all good

but it's a process every time you go through because you you you don't know whether your your your house has been breached and

If you are if you let yourself down

and you don't lock that gate you are then allowing the criminal opportunity to come through and

A lot of people let let themselves down

But not practicing these things and in a country like South Africa you have to do this otherwise

as I said you're going to become a victim and

The other thing is from there

You need to do you need to check that you live be no breaches and house in this process I advise othering and people

Anderson South Africans advise them to be armed advance them to buy a

licensed firearm should go for combat training and

to carry certain other weapons and which are all mentioned in my book and

to have inside dogs for example after -

Pitbull inside dogs that sleep and map in my bedroom and a lot of people are going to think this is paranoid

But in a country like South Africa. This is not paranoia

This is very very real, and then before you actually exit your house for example. You've now got a

another security gate before you open the door and

the procedures that I explained in detail is step by step as to what to do and

Making sure that your lighting systems are correct your alarm systems are correct that you don't have too much

Cover in other words foliage in your garden the criminals can hide behind

The other one is that that

Hive you parked your car

Than that before for when you're going to leave in the morning

because a lot of the situations in South Africa a lot of their tax or hijackings which lead to horrific outcomes and

happened when you are reversing out of your driveway if you change your

Routine or habit routine is a dangerous word because criminals pick up on routine a.m.

They pick up on routines if your car is facing outwards. You don't have that stop the other one too

Is that you need to expect the criminal to breach as you are going through your gate?

So there are so many so many different

Steps to follow them which is all explained in the book

Yeah

Because then you have some certain weak points in your daily habits

For instance opening the gates and someone is waiting for you

Absolutely correct Janice absolutely correct and in that situation you need we now we now go back to that orange

Mental states that orange mental state orange zone are referred to as that

expect the unexpected

Then a country like South Africa you have to expect unexpected

Otherwise you letting yourself down the statistics. They speak for themselves

I don't have to mention figures. They speak for themselves

You're saying that it's dangerous that go from habit to routine because you can be shuttled by they're

Criminals how do you actually avoid that in practical life?

Especially when it comes to this daily things that turn into a routine after a week or two that

that you so true we

We are all brought up to to follow routines, but it's part of laughs

It's part of love

but unfortunately the the criminal will target certain areas and those that is one of the weaknesses that a

Criminal can sit there and what your routine can note the word routine for days on end

That you're leaving at a certain time that you tend to leave that gate open or that door open with that window open?

so what I'm saying is that with the change of mindset is that we need to it's a serious case of introspection and

looking at your

your security

referring to each and every single individual South African innocent South African look at your security

Use this book that I've written as a guard because this book will help guard people

to be able to see whether they are following and

certain

Steps that can help them to bring up the roles of the entire family within this book

Yes, or do I do, it's it's um. I do the family needs to be very involved in in the book

It's now used for example. Just the husband being involved

He does all the security checks

And I refer as well especially in the the chapter 11 to do with Pharma tech security

that the roles of woman have actually had to change in South Africa or need to change and

They need to be more involved in the hot in the entire security

Element you know family element as well and

or and act as

an NF and a form of teamwork

husband and wife and children

You know to a certain level

You know depending on on the age of your children the maturity of the children and I refer to that is that you know?

It's it's it's your security plan each and every person has

there are different dynamics involved than they're in their security plan some of them are very similar and

But if you take the information if a person takes information out of the book, and they use that to prepare

Their security plan that is a huge

Hop and are go as far as saying that if they follow the steps in this book it will reduce their chances by 80 percent

or more

a falling victim to serious or violent trauma, so it's a

preventive measure based on the behavior of the subject

Which will be the formula?

Exactly it is it's a preventative measure

and

In Sweden when we talk about crime, and they're talking about

victims

Preventive message usually are framed as victim blaming that you blame the victim for not

necessarily needs to

think about it security because it's something that should be served them for instance a girl doesn't get raped because the way she's dressed she

Gets raped because of the rapist and it's the rapists are doing wrong

What the comment we have to tell liberals that we'll watch this interview that have that kind of mindset

the criminal the criminal needs to fear Authority yeah, because

My experience from South Africa is that?

If a black man enters your house. You're not allowed to

Maybe take those measurements of security as you wish because

the urge or the URI would say that maybe he just was hungry wanted to see what was into the fridge or

Maybe he just wanted your cell phone or maybe wanted some some money. It wasn't necessary to you to shoot him down

Well you

know

My book is my book is written for all South Africans all innocent South Africans

But you we we use an example of black man, white man Indian men colored men whatever ma'am enters your house

what are they do they're breaching they breaching the the perimeter of your house firstly and

with the precedence that have been set in South Africa and with the statistics of

Not only murders. I mean murder and it's awful

Let's look at it in the context that I said of serious and violent crime

Is that your your your your your rapes your your?

torture the murder

Anybody breaching the perimeter of your house and and a person is still going to

Try and give themselves time to figure out why the person is in the house

And I'll quote from Chapter five in my book which was an article

that I had copyright consent from a very well-known advocate and South Africa and

Where he quotes that they have been situations where people have hesitated in

self-defense and they are now dead

So I think that there just describes that in a country like South Africa if you going to hesitate

In a situation where person has already gone beyond that certain barrier

Then you you are most likely going to be killed so in South Africa especially

we need to we need to live with the situation of

Kill or be killed

There's another quote that I use that rather be judged by a jury of 12, then be carried by a group of six

Which

there are so many precedents that have been set according to the law as well where people have acted in self-defense and

The procedure is that yes you a criminal case will be brought against you of either

manslaughter or murder

But the transfers have you've been convicted in a soft defense situation and South Africa in many countries in the world

and we've seen it just recently with a very elderly gentleman in the UK and

Where he was charged

But he was not convicted because he was acting in self-defense so

For any legal system to take away a person's right for self-defence and they cannot themselves

protect that person they

They are then taking away your right to live your right just for survival

So what I'm saying is that if you feel that your life is threatened?

REPLAY SYSTEM | TIPS & TRICKS - Duration: 3:17.

Hey everyone! I'm Scott a video producer here at Epic.

I'm here with Alex who's a member of our capture team.

Hey guys, how are you doing?

We are going to show you the upcoming replay tool and...

give you some tips and tricks on how to shoot awesome Fornite videos.

Alex go ahead and get us into the replay.

Yes absolutely, we are going to dive right into here and we are going to the career tabs..

Under here you will have your replay tab and here is a full list of all your recent matches played.

So let's dive right into the capture.

In the middle of the toolbar are all your play back controls.

"Y" or "Triangle" will pauses and unpauses.

And the buttons around it will rewind or fast forward through your replay.

And to the right of that you can increase or decrease your reply.

You can slow all the way to 0.1 to do some super slow-motion shots...

or you can go up to 4x speed to do a cool fort construction time lapses.

As well as increasing or decreasing your speed replay playback...

you can also increase and decrease the speed of your camera...

Using the "X" or "B" button.

"X" will slowdown the speed of your camera and "B" will speed it up.

To the right of that is the player select.

This will allow you to cycle through all the nearby players.

You can also select another player by opening up your map.

The replay system has a number of different camera modes.

When you open up your replay you will start in third person camera.

This camera will just orbits around your player.

You can go up and down, zoom left and right.

But you will always be orbiting around your selected player.

To cycle through the different camera modes push in the right stick.

Next up are the drone follow and drone attached cameras.

The drone follow camera will rotate to keep your character in the center of the frame at all times...

where you can move it independently of your character.

The drone attached camera is the opposite, it will lock to your characters position...

so if your character moves forward the camera will also move forward...

but you can rotate it freely to frame your shots however you want.

There's also the drone free camera.

This camera can be moved independently from any of the players in the reply.

You can frame up shots exactly how you want...

You can do big wide shots, sweeping shots and flybys.

It gives you complete freedom over how you frame your shots.

Finally there's the gameplay camera.

This camera emulates the in-game experience.

So let's say you have an awesome triple kill with a rocket launcher but you forgot to record it.

You can load up the reply and you can capture it exactly how you would have seen it in game.

To the left of the reply controls we have two very important buttons.

The clock icon will let you skip to any point in the reply.

Press "A" and use the right stick to skip backwards or forwards in time.

Finally we have the camera controls.

On the left bumper are all of your lens settings...

where you can change the exposure, aperture and all of the focus settings here.

The right bumper are your camera settings...

where you can turn on things like player name plates...

player out lines and damage numbers.

Thanks for joining us for replay tips and tricks.

We have been using the play system for a very long time and can't wait to see what you all create.

You guys have a good one.

The rise and fall of the Assyrian Empire - Marian H Feldman - Duration: 5:17.

Before the sun never set on the British Empire,

before Genghis Khan swept the steppe,

before Rome extended its influence to encircle the Mediterranean Sea,

there was ancient Assyria.

Considered by historians to be the first true empire,

Assyria's innovations laid the groundwork for every superpower that's followed.

At its height, in the 7th century BCE,

the Assyrian Empire stretched across modern Iraq,

Syria,

Lebanon,

Israel,

and parts of Turkey,

Iran,

and Egypt.

Its wonders included a vast library and large botanical and zoological park.

But the story of Assyria's rise to dominance began many centuries earlier,

in the Late Bronze Age, in a city called Ashur.

Ashur was a tin and textiles trading center

located along the Tigris River in northern Iraq.

It shared its name with a god thought to be an embodiment of the city

and later of the entire empire.

For the administration-minded Assyrians, politics and religion were closely linked.

Around 1300 BCE, a high priest named Ashur-uballit I took the title of king

and initiated a tradition of military campaigns,

effectively transforming Assyria from a city-state to a territorial state.

This meant that a single administrative entity

oversaw many places, cultures, and peoples.

For the next 150 years, Assyria extended its reach and thrived.

In the 12th century BCE,

a mysterious catastrophe that still bewilders archaeologists

caused the Assyrians to lose much of their territory.

A few hundred years later, however,

Assyrian kings began a new round of conquests.

This time, they honed their administrative system

into an empire that would last generations.

Assyrians were military innovators and merciless conquerors.

During their conquests,

they used siege tactics and cruel punishments for those who opposed them,

including impalement and flaying.

The growth of their empire was due, in part,

to their strategy of deporting local populations,

then shifting them around the empire to fulfill different needs.

This broke peoples' bonds with their homelands

and severed loyalties among local groups.

Once the Assyrians conquered an area,

they built cities connected by well-maintained royal roads.

Often, when a new king came to power, he would build a new capital.

With each move, new palaces and temples were erected and lavishly decorated.

Although kings claimed absolute power,

we know that an extensive system of courtiers,

provincial officials,

and scholars influenced affairs.

At least one woman, Sammuramat, ruled the kingdom.

Assyrian rulers celebrated their military excursions

by having representations of their exploits

carved into the walls of their newly built palaces.

But despite the picture of a ruthless war state projected by these records,

the Assyrian kings were also interested in the cultural traditions of the region,

especially those of Babylonia, a separate state to the south.

Babylonia had been a cultural leader for millennia,

stretching back to the beginning of writing

at the end of the 4th millennium BCE.

Assyria saw itself as the inheritor and protector of this tradition.

Assyrian rulers supported scholars

in specialties ranging from medicine to magic,

and the capital cities, like Ninevah,

were home to elaborate parks and gardens

that housed plants and animals from around the empire.

One of Assyria's final rulers, Ashurbanipal,

sent scholars throughout Babylonia to gather up and copy ancient literary works.

Ashurbanipal's library took the form of clay tablets

inscribed with cuneiform in the languages of Akkadian and Sumerian.

The library was lost during the final sack of Ninevah in 612 BCE.

But thanks to a 19th century archaeological excavation,

many masterpieces of ancient literature,

including the Epic of Gilgamesh and the Babylonian Creation Epic,

survive today.

After centuries of rule,

the Assyrian Empire fell to the Babylonians and Medes

between 612 and 609 BCE.

Yet the innovations that the Assyrians  pioneered live on.

Their emphasis on constant innovation,

efficient administration,

and excellent infrastructure

set the standard for every empire that's followed them in the region

and across the globe.
