- Hey guys.
So today I really wanted to have a very open
and honest conversation about entrepreneurship,
especially for someone that is looking to start a business
or who maybe already has started something
and they're more so in a side hustle,
meaning that they're still working full time
and they're trying to get the business off the ground
on the side.
'Cause here's the thing: we hear a lot of the positive sides
of it and the inspirational sides of it,
and honestly, I'm guilty of that, too,
'cause I do talk about a lot of that,
especially on my blog and on my YouTube channel,
Dream with Intent, but there is the other,
I guess you could say the slightly darker side to it,
meaning that with a business,
it's not always all rainbows and butterflies,
with things just going perfectly all the time.
There is a really hard side to this, too,
and that's what I want to discuss today.
So no fancy video editing, no music,
none of this stuff.
I want to have a real and honest and real conversation
about entrepreneurship.
'Cause here's the thing: this is the one thing
that absolutely drives me crazy, especially when you see
these Facebook ads about how people can start a business
in their first month and start making like $5,000
or $10,000 and whatnot,
and honestly, I find that a little mind blowing
'cause I don't understand how that's possible.
Especially for somebody that is completely brand new
to business.
I am talking about at a point where you are a baby at this.
No, you know what, forget baby.
You're literally an embryo, meaning that you have
no information, or knowledge I should say,
on how to actually get a business going,
where to start, what it is you need to do and whatnot.
So how is it that you're expected to make that kind of money
the moment you start off?
I mean you're starting off with not having any clue
about landing pages or a payment system
or website creation or any of that stuff.
I mean forget that, I mean that's even a little bit
higher level.
I'm talking about even something like domain name
and you pretty much get that deer in headlights look
of what the hell did you say?
(chuckles)
So yeah, I just kind of find it a little mind blowing
on how is it that people are expected to accomplish that
and why is it that we don't talk about the real truth,
the honest and real truth about what it really means
to be an entrepreneur or what it really means
when you start a business.
'Cause here's the reality of it.
And let's see, how do I compare this?
I think you guys might like this example.
Okay, so just bear with me here.
So imagine that you decided that hey,
you love the idea of baking, and you want to learn
how to bake a cake.
But you have no idea where to start,
'cause you've never done this before,
this is something that is completely fresh and new
and it is something that you're totally clueless about.
So when it comes to baking a cake or just creating cake
in general, you know that there are so many different
varieties of cake, there's so many different ingredients
that you can use, I mean you can customize it,
whatever way that you want.
But end of it, there are two main things
they need to have, which is your main ingredient,
whether it's something you're using with flour
or going flourless and something to actually bake it in,
meaning your baking pan.
So those two are basically your main things
that you have to have in order for you to be able
to create this cake and the rest of it,
just like a business, where you have your basic items
that you need to have and the rest where you can
fully, fully customize and make it your way.
With the cake it works the same way.
So now that you realize that okay, I wanna get started,
but what do I do next?
'Cause there's so many different ways that you
can go about this.
You can maybe call up your mom or your aunt
or find a family member and get a recipe
to figure out what to do.
Or maybe you could go on Google and get a recipe
or go on an app.
I mean there's so many different ways
you could possibly do this, or completely create one
off the top of your head and just go nuts
and customizing it, whatever way that you want.
But end of the day, there's different options,
there's different ways that you can do this
and no way is exactly right, meaning that if you
only do it this way, that will the cake turn out
absolutely perfect.
That's not true, right?
Like I said, there's so many different ingredients,
there's so many different ways you could possibly do this.
It's the same thing with the business,
because there's no exact plan.
Like down to the t of this is what you need to do
in order to have a perfectly successful business
within a timeframe of one year.
There's no crazy plan out there like that,
I mean every business is different and it also depends.
What kind of business are you gonna have?
Are you doing something product related
or service related or who knows what?
I mean it's really up to you on which way,
again, you want to customize your business.
But we don't really talk about that part,
now do we, about how hard it really can be,
'cause same thing with the cake, when you first start off,
now again mind you, you've never done this before
so this is your very first attempt at it.
It's not like when you start baking that cake,
suddenly you're gonna create this seven-tier cake
all fancy and nicely decorated and next think you know
you have a line out the door with everyone that's like
giving you money 'cause they wanna purchase it.
Of course it's not gonna happen, it's your very first
attempt at a cake.
You probably will burn it or god knows what
or maybe you might luck out and it turns out
absolutely amazing.
But again, it's probably not going to be
that insane, seven-tier cake or again if we compare this
to a business, it's not like the first year
it's totally possible to have that multi-multi-million
dollar business.
It's gonna take time, and granted, yes,
there's some people out there that could end up
just making that seven-tier cake 'cause of some
amazing talent or luck or whatnot
so there's always an exception, but for a majority of us
I think we kinda fall in that other bucket
of where you need to practice and try
and keep improving on and the reason that you're doing that
is because this is something that you really wanna try,
it's something that you're passionate about.
You know that eventually you will get that cake right.
Just like your business.
It will be hard, but eventually, eventually you will
get it right.
It will start giving you results.
It will start becoming successful,
but it's not gonna happen the moment you immediately start.
We need to stop with that crazy expectation.
I mean I'm not saying don't have expectation
of being successful, I'm just saying don't have
the expectation that the moment you go live
and again, with not having business experience or whatsoever
that suddenly day one, boom, it just takes off.
Unless you have some crazy luck, like I said,
probably luckier than a lottery winner for something
like that to work out.
So if you're wondering why is it that we're having
this conversation today, it's because I want us
to be real about this.
If you're going to pursue a business, realize that
it is going to be a bit of a tough journey,
maybe for some much tougher than compared to others
and for others maybe it's a little bit easier.
But end of the day, there are going to be failures,
there are going to be struggles, there are gonna be
these amazing, amazing moments too where things
will just work out perfectly.
But it's not the easiest road to travel on.
So if you're going to go the route of the entrepreneurship
path, then realize there will be some pain along the way
and that is perfectly fine.
But does that mean that just because you're gonna
experience some pain and there will be struggles
along the way that you don't do it?
Of course not.
If this is what you're feeling deep in your heart,
then yes, go for it, a hundred percent.
I don't ever want you to look back and feel
that regret of why didn't I do this.
Here I am thinking oh my god, I have all this regret
built up in me because I should've done this
five years ago, 10 years ago, 20 years ago,
I mean who knows, right?
'Cause there's always the potential of what if.
But until you try, until you really give it
that hundred percent, it's hard to say
will this work out or will it not work out?
But is it worth that try?
Abso-fricken-loutely.
So I hope that you will join me on this journey
and really take your business
and get it started and look, I said even if you start it off
as a side hustle, totally fine,
but give it that hundred percent.
Don't give up just because it doesn't instantly take off.
It will take time, and you will get there,
just have some faith, have some trust
in yourself that you can do this.
And I know you can do it.
