Hi I'm Nick Schade at Guillemot Kayaks, welcome the 14th episode in my series on building

the strip built Petrel Play kayak.

In the last episode I glassed the coaming and the deck interior.

In this episode I'll cut and install the hatch, install the deck fittings and cheek plates

and make end-pours.

I usually cut the hatches freehand by tracing a pattern on to the deck and cutting it out

with a jigsaw, but the back deck of the Petrel Play is nearly perfectly flat.

This allowed me to make a template on my CNC machine then cut the hatch with a router.

I'm using a tiny 1/16-inch router bit in my small plunge router and cut the hatch in a

couple passes.

The hatch sill is made from two parts.

A spacer, that has the same inner diameter as the hatch, and the lip, with a 3/4-inch

smaller inner diameter.

They both have the same outer dimension about 1/2-inch larger than the hole.

I dry fit the parts to make sure everything is the right size and fits well.

This also allows me to practice getting everything aligned before they are sticky with epoxy.

I want to glue the spacer and the lip together before gluing the assembled sill into the

boat.

This way I can clean up any glue squeeze out and sand the edges before final assembly.

Some tape on the deck interior lets me remove the sill after the glue cures.

The masking tape contains the mess and nothing sticks to this clear blue flash tape.

Assembling the sill in place on the deck assures that the finished piece matches the slight

curve of the deck.

With the spacer in place I apply some epoxy to the surface.

I've added some colloidal silica to the epoxy to make thicker glue.

I also apply glue on the mating surface of the lip.

Gluing both sides assures there are no pin holes to allow water into the finished hatch.

There is no such thing as too many clamps.

I want a tight seam all the way around.

This kayak is getting some of my recessed deck line fittings.

These are mounted through egg shaped holes in the deck.

I cut the holes using a template and

a router.

The slot for the retractable skeg control is installed in a similar manner.

The recessed fittings need a little shaping to fit to the curved deck surface.

I scuff up the fiberglass for a stronger glue bond.

The fittings will get a layer of fiberglass over the inside for strength and protection.

Masking tape around each fitting contains the mess.

Each hole and fitting is coated with un-thickened epoxy that will soak into the wood before

applying epoxy thickened with wood flour as the final glue.

The skeg control slot is installed in the same manner.

Off camera I rounded over the edges of the hatch sill then glued it in place.

Now I want a layer of fiberglass to reinforce it and encapsulate the wood.

I use bias cut strips to conform to the shape and contours.

It is my goal to have a layer of fiberglass cloth over every bit of wood in the whole

kayak.

While varnish provides good protection.

The thickness and reinforcement provided by the fiberglass and epoxy followed by varnish

creates a layer of armor that cannot be matched by a couple coats of varnish.

This often means a lot of extra work.

Getting the glass to wrap over these deck fitting bumps is a hassle.

But it's a lot easier to do this now than to replace a rotten piece later because someone

failed to maintain the kayak properly.

Cheek plates help keep your butt centered in the kayak.

They also provide a convenient place to mount the backrest.

I weld the plate in place with CA glue.

CA glue by itself isn't strong enough so the plates are reinforced with fillets and fiberglass.

I also added some carbon fiber for additional strength.

Fillets and glass on both sides of the plates.

A traditional endpour involves standing the kayak on end and pouring some resin in to

make a solid tip.

Instead I'm going to make a little dam at each end out of an old squeegee to create

a reinforced place to mount a grab loop.

The dammed volume doesn't need to be large, just big enough to drill a hole through.

I added some quartz micro-spheres to the epoxy to make a thick lightweight mix and then a

little graphite powder to darken the color.

After lightly scoring the fresh fiberglass and epoxy with a sharp utility knife I peel

off the excess fiberglass.

On the outside of the deck, the deckline fittings and skeg control slot are planed, rasped and

sanded flush and smooth.

The outside of the

fittings are protected under a layer of fiberglass.

The excess glass is trimmed then a fill coat is added.

After the epoxy has set up, the remaining glass is trimmed, and the ragged edges are

sanded smooth.

Over on the hull, the end-pours are cured and the dam can be popped out.

I rasp off the excess material to allow for a snug fit with the deck.

This little jig measures a consistent distance down from the sheer while providing a horizontal

reference as I drill through the end-pour.

I start with a quarter inch pilot hole going all the way through.

Then I make a large countersink on either side.

I finish with a 3/8-inch hole, going half way through from one side then completing

it from the other side.

This prevents blowout while keeping the hole in the right place.

The deck and hull now almost complete and ready to join together.

So, in the next episode I'll apply some varnish to the interior and then merge the deck and

hull back into one unit.

I can't believe it went so fast

so many things happened to me

the only thing I regret is not opening this channel earlier

because sometimes I watch my videos

I met Rachel at the soccer team I joined in my school at Ohio

Why over-the-counter painkillers are costing Australia millions - Duration: 1:01.

We have found in Australia over the last few years

there has been a growing misuse of over-the-counter products that contain codeine.

They are combination products that contain two different painkillers

- the codeine painkiller as well as something else like ibuprofen or paracetamol.

The issue is that patients often find over time they can actually become quite dependent

on the codeine component and they find they actually need to take more and more of the medication

to get the effects that they need.

The risk in doing that is that you are taking quite a lot of other painkillers as well.

We have seen a lot of complications coming into the hospital due to those really high intakes

of really simple painkillers like ibuprofen that is found in Nurofen, or Advil.

HOW TO MAKE VEGAN VINDALOO // KIDNEY BEAN VINDALOO | Mary's Test Kitchen - Duration: 4:44.

Hello friends, and not-yet-friends!

I've teased you with this Vegan Vindaloo for far too long.

Giving you glimpses of this spicy dish of creamy beans infused with flavour from sweet

onions, warming ginger, spices, crushed tomato and splashes of vinegar and lemon...without

givng you a full recipe video.

I'm terrible.

Keeping you from this healthy but indulgent tasting, low fat, high protein, quick to make

vegan vindaloo...too cruel.

I'm sorry.

Hopefully, you can accept my apology after making it and tasting it yourself.

I find it easiest and quickest to assemble all my ingredients before starting to cook.

Especially when dealing with the list of Indian spices.

But don't be intimidated!

I found them easily at my local supermarket and you just dump them into this recipe.

Not at all how true Indian chefs would do it but we're doing things the easy way.

If you prefer to use a vindaloo spice mix, go ahead.

Start by sautéing sliced onions in a deep heavy pot over medium high heat.

I prefer to use red onions both for flavour and for the extra phytonutrients that come

with purple vegetables but you can use any onions you like.

Cook the onions until they are quite soft, lose much of their color (if yours were purple

to begin with) and start to turn golden.

Then add your spices: cumin seeds and mustard first.

On filming day, I couldn't find my mustard seeds so I used ground but if you have the

seeds that would be great.

Of course, I found them afterwards.

C'est la vie, eh?

They'll become fragrant in seconds.

Add crushed garlic and ginger.

My garlic is blue because it sat in the fridge for a day before I made this.

Looks weird but it's totally fine to eat.

Add ground coriander, cloves, black pepper, turmeric, paprika, cinnamon, and crushed red

chilli peppers.

Use your discretion with the chillies.

I love spice and this made a comfortable medium heat for me!

But if in doubt, use half as much.

You can always make food spicier; it's much more difficult to make it milder.

Then add cooked and drained kidney beans, crushed tomato, balsamic vinegar, sugar, and

salt.

Usually, vindaloo uses white vinegar and/or tamarind paste for the tangy flavour.

I didn't have those things and I really really like balsamic vinegar so that's why

I used balsamic.

You use what you like.

This is your vegan bean vindaloo and there are no rules!

I chose kidney beans in particular for this recipe just because I really like them.

I like their size and colour for this type of dish.

The creaminess.

How they absorb flavour.

But you can use any bean you like for this recipe.

Or even use tofu or beefy beefless seitan!

Turn the heat up, cover, and let this simmer for 10 – 15 minutes so everything gets hot

and the flavours mingle together.

Afterwards, taste.

Then add some lemon juice.

Taste again and adjust.

This recipe 'as is' is perfect for me but taste is so personal.

Especially when it comes to spicy food and salt levels.

And that's it.

This is the kind of comfort meal I love during sweater season.

Or any season for that matter.

It's just that good.

It's also the kind of dish that stores well in the freezer so you can make ahead and have

it any time.

really really small thing they already had the little cross sign thingy that

the Germans used to have back in the war but for some reason people were still

mad that I wasn't historically accurate or whatever and they finally added it in

now the reason why I want to talk about this is because this adds a sense of

realism to the story and I know that's why a lot of people wanted it in there

but this just shows like how much work they're putting in and the game

especially the campaign if you guys have watched a trailer you'll know like the

voice acting is on point the graphics are on point it looks like

a damn movie to be honest if you guys have a look at it does look like a movie

the action looks good the gameplay looks good it's just all it looks really

really nice sorry guys that's mainly what I wanted

Your relationship may be perfectly normal and natural, but is it truly living up to

its potential?

In this video, I'm going to show you 4 toxic relationship habits that seem normal, but

turn out to be damaging your relationship.

1) Dropping Hints

What is obvious to you is often a mystery to your clueless and beloved significant other.

If we want something, it is unfair to expect our partner to read our mind.

No matter how connected they may seem, we are bound to come up disappointed when using

this strategy.

We often do this to avoid appearing overly demanding or unfairly critical.

Ironically, however, the effect usually ends up being the opposite.

Stating a desire kindly but clearly may feel uncomfortable, but it is far more healthy

in the long run.

2) Getting Jealous

Although a little bit of jealousy is normal, it should not be romanticized as we all too

often tend to do.

Instead, it should be seen for what it is, a sign of a weak relationship.

We may feel flattered when a partner is jealous.

We see it as a sign that we are valued.

However, it is also an indicator that there is a lack of trust, an unhealthy need for

control, and a worrying amount of insecurity.

Jealousy, though natural, is not a healthy part of a relationship.

It is a problem that needs to be addressed.

3) Not Taking Emotional Responsibility

Bad feelings are truly difficult to deal with, even for the most stable and functional of

adults.

It always seems easier to shift the responsibility for them to someone else.

A loving partner is usually the perfect target for this.

All too often, we will blame our partner for emotions that are not their fault.

For example, we may be stressed from blowing an assignment at work, come home to find the

house a mess, and become furious with their lack of responsibility.

Before blaming our partner for a negative emotion, we need to trace it to its true source,

which is often ourselves.

4) Keeping Score

When we feel insecure in our own behavior, we often hold on to past mistakes our partner

has made as a way of validating ourselves.

For example, we may decide it's okay to flirt with a co-worker because our partner

forgot to buy us a birthday gift.

This behavior is normal, but damaging.

It shifts our focus away from working through issues in a healthy way, and instead encourages

us to look for flaws in our partner and promote our own sense of self-righteousness.

"Normal is an ideal.

But it's not reality.

Reality is brutal, it's beautiful, it's every shade between black and white, and it's

magical.

Yes, magical.

Because every now and then, it turns nothing into something," wrote Tara Kelly.

Just because a behavior is normal does not mean you have to resign yourself to it.

Don't be scared to break the mold for something better.

Risks of Sudden Death in Triathlon Higher than Expected - Duration: 2:20.

Combining swimming, biking, and running, triathlons are a grueling test of stamina and physical

fitness.

Participation in triathlons is high, according to data from USA Triathlon, though participation

rates have trailed off a bit in recent years.

But increasing evidence suggests that these endurance competitions can have a negative

health impact, despite the fact that the individuals who compete in them are generally in excellent

shape.

Appearing in the Annals of Internal Medicine, this report documents a total of 122 deaths

and 13 cardiac arrests occurring in US triathlons between 1985 and 2016.

The data comes from a variety of sources – the US National Registry of Sudden Death in Athletes,

as well as news sources and other records.

That said, there may be some risk of undercounting here.

By and large, we're not talking about ironman competitions here.

Nearly 50% of the deaths occurred in short-distance triathlons.

And the majority of deaths, 67%, occurred in the swimming portion of the race – which

is usually the first part of the triathlon.

Most of those who survived cardiac arrest had a cardiac arrest during the land-based

segments of the races.

The implication is clear – the ability to get rapid medical treatment to stricken individuals

may be critical, making swimming, and particularly open water swimming, a unique danger in triathlon

not seen in other endurance sports.

Overall, the authors calculate a death rate of 1.74 per 100,000 triathlon competitors.

That may seem like a vanishingly small number, but realize that the rate of sudden death

in otherwise healthy athletes is 0.5 per 100,000 individuals per year.

Put another way, running a triathlon elevates the risk of sudden death by a factor of more

than 1000.

I don't mean to be alarmist – overall the risks here are really small.

Triathlon is a relatively safe activity.

But the risks cluster in certain individuals, as you can see from this graph.

Older men seem to be at particular risk.

Based on autopsy reports, many of these men had undocumented cardiovascular disease.

The authors stop short of providing clinical recommendations here, but the data seem to

argue that men over the age of 40 thinking of participating in a triathlon should speak

to their physician before diving into the sport.
