The ANCHOR surely is an award but essentially it is an accolade and above all - a competition!
The 2016 winner is: Albin Lee Meldau!
The large number of international new musical talents present at Reeperbahn Festival
got us thinking how we can put a special focus on the most promising emerging acts
already playing Reeperbahn Festival.
We book more than 400 acts each year and are pretty well connected by now,
what makes work a lot easier than 12 years ago, when we first started out
There are many examples of artists we've seen playing live somewhere and thought:
Nobody may care about them now, but we like it so much, we want to make people care
by giving them a platform here at Reeperbahn Festival.
The acts don't need to create a crazy buzz already or be featured all over the hip music blogs.
That's how ANCHOR was created
And that's something totally new in the world of music festivals
And we decided to create a competition like ANCHOR
because for 12 years now we've been showing tons of international artists.
I have to think of acts like Bon Iver
Ed Sheeran
but also BOY
Cro
or Kraftklub
German and international artists that played their first international shows at Reeperbahn Festival
and hit the charts shortly afterwards.
And I was surprised how well received their shows at Reeperbahn Festival already were.
And if we had had the ANCHOR back then already, I'm sure those acts would have won.
The eight ANCHOR nominees perform their shows as part of the public festival program.
Just ordinary club shows that are examined and judged by a human, competent and charming jury
The reason for having a prominent jury was that we know that there are people out there
who are well established in the international music business who are prominent as well as competent
And it only works with accelerators like these.
People trust their judgement because they are well established already
while the newcomers, the nominees in the competition, they are not...
And they need this support that they receive from the prominent judges.
The ANCHOR is a whole-year project.
It starts in June with the revelation of the jury in New York.
Before the jury gets to work in Hamburg in September, a board of 12 to 13 music business professionals from all over the world
reviews all submissions and selects the eight final acts for ANCHOR.
Those eight are our nominees that then play their shows at Reeperbahn Festival.
Employing this kind of personal evaluation for outstanding music
we hope to create a new guide as well for the music business,
because Reeperbahn Festival is an important industry event
as well as for the fans
We are lucky to have the opportunity to choose from all music genres
thus we can and do offer all varieties of music.
Because it's the nature of the project, to have rather unknown artists at ANCHOR,
we decided to accompany the artists, especially the winner, even after the competition is over
so both the accolade and the winner have a chance to grow
For the winning act the "ANCHOR year" ends in New York
one year later, when the jury for the next ANCHOR will be revealed
and last year's ANCHOR winner performs
