Hi everyone! Today, I'm going to be doing the behind the booktube tag which I was tagged in by Hélène at booksbyleynes
and before I get into the questions I just thought I would generally talk about my setup that I have for my videos.
I have two different set ups. So I recently got a new camera, so I will be showing you this setup,
and then I will also be showing you the setup that I used until very recently.
Because I might still use that every now and then. So what I used to film with was my phone
which is an iPhone SE.
And I would basically always just put it on a selfie stick and put the selfie stick into
a little box in which you could put like and magazines and papers,
I don't really know what that's called, but I would put it in there
I would take two paintbrushes to kind of stabilize it a bit,
and because the selfie camera is not the better quality
I would always use the other camera with the better quality and in order to be able to see myself
I always use a mirror
which I place in a way that it reflects my screen and that I can see it,
so I know if I'm in focus, I know if I'm in the frame at all. So that's basically the way I did it and
I always film by my window at my desk basically.
Sometimes I put a lamp in the background because I don't have a lot of light in my room but sometimes
I don't so it always depends on the weather basically.
But that's how I used to set up my videos.
And then the way that I do it now as I recently got myself a proper camera basically,
and I did have a tripod before and I just put my camera on my tripod.
And I just put it on my desk. And this camera has a viewfinder
I can see myself which is much better than with my phone and
that is basically the way I set up my videos, and then I always just try to have a bit of a
tidy room. So I would just take the rubbish that's in the background put it somewhere else,
so usually it does look a bit tidy in my room
but it's just the pile of rubbish is somewhere else. So that is basically my general setup
And now we'll get into the questions of the tag. So the first question is what camera
do you use? And they just said I used to use my phone which is an iPhone SE.
This is perfectly fine. I started out using this, then I used the different camera for a while,
which was like a cheap digital camera from Aldi,
but it stopped working so I went back to using my phone.
The only reason why I actually stopped using this was because I don't have a lot of space,
I have only like 16 GB on there so you can use like 12,
and I also want to do other things with my phone than just filming booktube videos.
So I've always had a limited amount of time to film my videos, and it was never enough.
And so it just decided to purchase a proper camera and now I use the Canon EOS 600D
which is a pretty expensive camera if you buy it new, but I got it done on ebay of quite a reasonable price.
So I just thought I'd just do that.
Because I just wanted a proper camera and I was looking a bit into cameras that
you can film videos with and then I thought okay,
actually, I do want a proper camera to take photos with as well.
And I wanted to DSLR for a really really long time.
So just thought I would just do it because as I said it was- it was a good deal on eBay.
So that's why I'm using now. The second question is: do you use any additional equipment? For example lighting,
tripod, microphone, remote, etc. I do use a tripod, and I used to use a selfie stick kind of as a tripod,
but apart from that I don't use anything.
So as I said sometimes I put a lamp into the back to have a bit more light in my room,
I can already see it's a bit darker now, but like I don't mind, but I don't-
I'm not gonna buy expensive film lights, and I'm- I don't need a microphone my camera's microphone is enough for me,
and I can literally reach my camera with my hand, I can just like reach out like that and I can reach the-
the button to start and end the video, so I don't need a remote either, and yeah.
I have a tripod because that's just a bit more practical than putting it on a stack of books.
That's what I used to do, so if you don't have a tripod
you don't need one. You can also just take a lot of books or boxes or anything
and just put your phone on top of that.
That's what as I said I used to do
But I'm a really messy person so the problem with me doing that is that I would leave that stack of books there for days.
And I don't have a big desk anyways, so
it was just all a bit annoying and I decided to stop using a lot of books as my tripod.
But that's something you can do you don't need a tripod,
I just also found one for quite a reasonable price on eBay,
so I just thought they might as well do that.
Scripted or spontaneous? How do you know what you want to say in your videos?
I do my videos spontaneously so I have tried to do a scripted video once, but it didn't work at all.
I just had my laptop next to my camera and I was
trying to follow the script but I was still going on tangents,
so I thought it's just not worth it like putting the effort in to make a script where don't stick to it anyways.
And like most of the time my videos are very spontaneous,
and I go on tangents and have to like repeat myself 500 times and cut out a lot, but I try to
at least plan what I'm going to say. Just going through all the book reviews for example in my head before I do them
I also have a notebook
that I just write stuff in. So I haven't used this in a while but basically
I just write the book titles and then I write what I thought about them.
But I haven't done that in a while,
I should do that to get maybe then my book reviews are a bit more structured. But apart from that
I really just- I turn on the camera and just go for it, and hope for the best that I can edit it out later.
How many takes do you take while filming?
A lot. Really a lot. So most of the time either as I said I go on tangents,
or I start a sentence and then I completely loose what I wanted to say, or
I don't know, I would realize that I'm pronouncing things wrong so start the sentence again or just a lot of things.
I don't know, I take a lot of takes.
I can't tell you how many but a lot.
If you use music in your videos where do you find it? I've never actually used
music before. I've only ever really used music in one video that I did which was my uni reading last video
where I did very tacky and silly kind of Mad World piano thing,
but that was just I did that on Bandcamp on my computer.
Apart from that I've never really used music,
I don't even like it when people have those chatty type of videos where you're sitting in front of a camera
I don't like it when there's music in the background.
So I don't know if I were to use music for like time lapses or anything I would probably just
like look for websites other people use on booktube.
But I can't really- I don't know I've never done that before so-
How do you make your thumbnails?
Basically the way that everyone else does as well
So just take my stack of books that I want to show and then I just make a lot of faces.
So basically most of the time I do this before I start the video,
so it will have like half an hour- not half an hour half a minute or something of me being like that with a books
like making faces hoping there's something that I could use and then I just save that as an image.
What do you use to edit your videos? I have a MacBook because I'm a victim of capitalism.
I also got this second hand though, I wouldn't buy a new MacBook.
I use iMovie, which is the- the movie editor thing that you have on your MacBook,
but I don't- I wouldn't say that if you want to start a booktube channel you need to buy a MacBook,
because if you have a Windows you have, although it is a pain in the arse program, you can use Movie Maker.
And then I think there are also a lot of other
programs that you can use that are
free software that don't cost a lot of money if you have a windows, so you don't need to use iMovie,
that's just what I use, and I think it's pretty alright.
Any tips, tricks or hacks when it comes to filming/editing?
I would say the main thing is watch the entire thing before you save it because very often I see videos where people-
actually especially when they have like very high quality camera and good lighting and it all looks very professional,
but then I see that they forgot to edit something out,
so they started a sentence for example and didn't work and then they start the sentence again.
And they leave that little take in and it's like I mean it's not bad
I mean it doesn't destroy the video, but that's something if you just watch the entire thing
before saving it
that's how you can avoid things like that. And so it would just suggest doing that.
Also think if you watch the entire video before you save it you can also make sure that you don't repeat yourself
too often. Because I still repeat myself a lot, but you wouldn't know how much I repeat myself
I didn't edit out everything where I repeat myself a million times.
So I think that's the main suggestion that I that would make, but apart from that just try to relax.
I think I'm finally getting in a place where I'm not super uncomfortable
talking to a camera. But right now I'm also home alone. Like I live in a shared flat and the walls are very very thin.
So if I know that I'm not alone and that like you can hear me talk to myself
when you're in the room next to me I feel a bit uncomfortable. But yeah, so just try to relax.
Try to speak up. Because you obviously can edit the audio of your video, which I
basically almost always do. I think since I got my new camera I don't have to do that anymore,
maybe the microphone is a bit better,
I don't know. But I used to always have to like turn my volume up in the audio editing thing in my video
software because I just don't talk large enough. So try to talk loud enough,
try to evade any background noises,
just try to make sure we can hear and see you. Like for me personally very often when I watch booktube videos
I don't even need to be able to see the person very well because very often I don't even actually watch the videos
I just put them on and like my laptop on my phone, and then just do other things like
knitting or making food or cleaning or stuff like that so-
But yeah still, if you want to show your book or whatever do try to make sure that we can see them,
that we can hear what you're saying. I also always like when people put the titles of the books they're talking about in the description.
Because sometimes because of their accent or because they're talking very fast or something for some reason sometimes
I don't understand what the book is called or what the author's called or something.
And if the title is in the description it just makes it really easy for me to find it on my Goodreads,
or if I want to order it like I can just type it in. But when the title isn't there
it's sometimes a bit difficult, so I would suggest doing that
just because it makes it easier for your viewers to- to know what you're talking about.
Also and I'm still trying to get into the swing of that when you're filming yourself try to
talk in a way that makes it easier for you to edit yourself. Because if you mess up a sentence
I think it's easier to start the sentence again entirely and to not just say the word again.
Because that just sounds more natural if you edit it in the end.
But that- I think that's just the thing that takes practice to
just film yourself very often and to mess up very often it edit yourself very often and then
to kind of learn from that how to
better speak in front of the camera.
And the last question is in your opinion what makes a good video from a production standpoint?
I would have to agree with Hélène on that, that I think our books your videos
don't really have a high production level like even if we use good cameras.
It's still just someone sitting in front of camera and just speaking.
But I think as I just said it was a question before, I think if you have a
video quality that makes it possible to see you,
and an audio quality that makes it possible to hear you that I think that's enough on booktube.
And I can't really say anything else
I really like kind of more creative videos, and I think we're not that creative on here
And I would like to- my videos to be a bit more creative,
but that's just not something that I think is a strength of mine.
So I'm just sitting here and talking.
And I think that's what most of us do so I feel like I can't really answer that, I don't know.
I think the most important things is decent audio quality.
Just try to- to talk clearly, to talk loudly enough, and then it should be fine.
So these were my answers for the behind the booktube tag.
I'm not really gonna tag anyone because I don't know who to tag,
but if you want to do this video do consider yourself tagged by me, do tell me in the
Comments down below that different to do this video, and I'm gonna watch it. But yeah, so just do that if you want.
And thank you very much for watching, and I will see you in my next video. Bye!
