Rocket Science E06: Solid Propulsion - Duration: 7:38.
So far, we've seen liquid chemical propulsion, where a liquid fuel and a liquid oxidizer
are combined and combusted.
There's also solid chemical propulsion, where the fuel and oxidizer are mixed and
stored in a solid state.
When we talk about solid propulsion, we use the word 'motor' instead of 'engine'.
In a motor, the combustion chamber is elongated.
The propellant, or fuel/oxidizer mix, is stored in the combustion chamber.
For larger motors, it's usually molded or cast in pieces and afterwards assembled.
Between the combustion chamber and the propellant lies an insulation layer to protect the combustion
chamber from the extreme heat.
The simplest shape of the solid propellant is a cylinder with a hole through the middle.
The hole is named the perforation.
The burning starts on the surface area of the perforation and expands outwards.
There are many shapes, also known as grains, that the solid propellant can be stored as.
The surface area of the grain at any instant is proportional to the thrust.
This is why different grains have different thrust to time curves.
A thrust that increases over time is called progressive.
A thrust that decreases over time is called regressive.
A constant thrust is called neutral.
The area under the curve represents the momentum gained by burning the propellant.
The thrust is also proportional to how fast the propellant is burning, also known as the
burn rate, expressed in millimeters per second.
The burn rate varies depending on the pressure inside the combustion chamber.
The higher the pressure, the higher the burn rate.
The pressure inside the combustion chamber is determined by the nozzle's dimensions.
An electrically activated pyrotechnic device is used to commence the burning of the motor.
Solid propulsion has a number of advantages and disadvantages.
A major advantage is that it generates a larger thrust than similarly sized liquid propulsion
does, albeit for a shorter period of time.
It's also simpler than liquid propulsion.
This makes it cheap.
The thrust per cost ratio is high.
The thrust can't be actively changed during flight.
Once ignited, it will burn the way it was designed to burn.
You can't push some button and decrease the thrust by 10%, as is the case with most
liquid chemical propulsion systems.
Solid propellants are usually not as efficient as liquid propellants.
Physically, this means that the velocity of the exhaust gas is not as high as with liquid
chemical propulsion.
There are no cold liquids to cool the nozzle.
In liquid propulsion, the fuel is often used to cool the nozzle to prevent decomposition
and for saving weight.
Not having this ability is problematic for solid motors.
Active thrust vectoring, actively controlling the direction of the thrust, is also difficult.
The nozzle of a solid motor has a really tough job.
It has to withstand extremely high temperatures without any cooling.
How does it do this?
It relies on the energy required to heat up the nozzle being as large as possible.
In other words, materials with a high specific heat are favored.
Since the motor only needs to operate for a few minutes at most, this helps.
It also uses materials that require a lot of energy to decompose.
Insulation is used, so that the rate at which things heat up decreases.
A throat insert can be used in extreme circumstances.
A throat insert is usually made of a high-grade graphite.
It has great properties at the extremely high temperatures it will be heated up to.
The gas at the throat might not be the hottest, as we've seen in the second episode, but
it is the point where heating is the largest, due to the small circumference.
Here we have a graph showing the heating per unit surface area throughout the nozzle.
Some throat inserts are made of tungsten.
Tungsten has an incredibly high melting point, and is very resistant to decomposition.
On the downside, it cracks easily and is heavy.
After a two-minute burn or so, the nozzle will have lost a significant amount of material
due to decomposition.
A few inches of thickness is definitely possible for a large solid motor.
How much was lost largely depends on the material and its location in the nozzle.
Solid rockets have been around since at least the 13th century.
However, they still have their place in our society today, even in the commercial space
sector.
Let's look at some examples.
The Atlas V is a rocket currently operated by United Launch Alliance, or ULA for short.
This rocket uses what are called strap-on boosters to increase the Delta v without adding
too much cost.
These are smaller solid rockets that provide some extra thrust early on during the mission.
They are jettisoned after they run out of propellant, which only takes 94 seconds in
case of the Atlas V.
For comparison, the first stage's engine operates for 253 seconds.
The Atlas V can utilize up to 5 boosters.
The Atlas V boosters have a diameter of 1.6 meters, which is large, but there's much
larger.
Here we have the Ariane 5 rocket, a rocket operated by Ariane Space.
Now we're no longer talking about strap-on boosters, because the Ariane 5 has to use
these.
These boosters have a diameter of 3.06 meters.
One of these provides almost twice as much thrust as the Atlas V's first stage liquid
engine does.
Remember that motors provide more thrust than similarly sized engines do, so this shouldn't
come as a surprise.
We'll also take a look at the Vega rocket, another rocket operated by Ariane Space.
This one's pretty unique.
It has 4 stages, the first 3 of which are completely powered by solid motors.
The 4th stage burns a hypergolic fuel and oxidizer.
Hypergolics don't need to be ignited.
They ignite as soon as they come in contact with one another.
The Vega rocket is quite small compared to the others mentioned in this video.
It is intended for small payloads only.
Nonetheless, it hasn't failed a single time.
And lastly, we have the space shuttle of course.
The space shuttle's solid boosters have a very difficult task.
They have to carry a giant tank and a giant space-plane off the launchpad.
The space shuttle itself doesn't generate all that much thrust, so it really relies
on those boosters.
Each booster produces as much thrust as almost 15 Merlin 1D engines and has a diameter of
3.71 meters.
In the next episode, we'll be looking at hybrid propulsion.
This is where one propellant is solid and another is gaseous or liquid.

These 2 brothers were also alarmed by the shape of a strange girl,
standing in the middle of the road at night .. all by her own.

While these girls were having a lively conversation, the one operating the camera, caught something
really spooky.
When these two people were arriving at home, another room mate,
that wa suposed to be home, was suddenly gone.

President Moon says it's time to enhance pressure and sanctions on North Korea - Duration: 1:57.
President Moon Jae-in arrived back in Seoul late last night following his trip to the
UN General Assembly.
As he was leaving New York, President Moon, once again highlighted, more pressure must
be placed on North Korea... and he urged Pyongyang to halt its aggressive behavior.
All the while... he emphasized... dialogue -- in whatever forum or format -- is the best
way to resolve the standoff.
Hwang Hojun starts us off.
Just before taking off from New York's JFK airport to return to Seoul, President Moon
Jae-in held a brief press conference onboard Korea's Air Force One, once again urging North
Korea to put an end to its continuing provocations.
Referring to Pyongyang's nuclear tests and missile launches, a total of eleven since
President Moon took office in May,... he said the regime's actions left the world no choice
but to strengthen pressure and sanctions.
President Moon also reiterated the need for his administration to come up with new and
creative ways to deal with the ever-escalating tension on the Peninsula.
Some of those changes were already mentioned during his keynote address to the U.N. General
Assembly on Thursday local time, calling for a multilateral dialogue to fundamentally and
peacefully resolve the North Korean nuclear issue.
However, he said any new approach will also have to wait until North Korea halts its provocations.
When asked about the revival of the six-party denuclearization talks,.... which included
the two Koreas, the U.S., China, Japan, and Russia,...
President Moon stressed that as long as it solves the issue in a fundamental way, the
format of the dialogue doesn't matter.
As he closed the press conference, President Moon remarked on how tough the itinerary had
been because of the jetlag, but he assured reporters that all of his engagements during
his four days in New York had been made public.
The South Korean President returned to Seoul late Friday night, completing his five-day-trip
to New York.

Review - Lego Friends: Heartlake Riding Club (41126) - Duration: 12:25.
Hey everyone!
JAYSTEPHER with Heartlake Riding Club
by Lego Friends.
Set number 41126.
Contains 575 pieces.
Recommended building ages are 6 through 12.
Wow look at this Hearlake Riding Club.
Looks like one of those exclusive riding clubs
where you have to have a membership.
It appears that Stephanie and Ma are included.
Nice colorful box art.
It appears we get a lot of accessories.
Let's open this up.
Now I have a feeling there's going to be stickers
for this set.
I'm hoping there's not.
Honestly that was packed a bit sloppy.
A bag full of plates
and ponies too.
Wow this is going to be an exciting set.
We have several numbered bags for easy build.
Honestly these manuals were packed sloppy.
Look at this.
They're all wrinkled.
We also get a set of stickers.
Not a bad set of print work.
I was hoping those were printed directly on the bricks.
Well it is a nice selection of parts.
Well let's take a closer look at the
Heartlake Riding Club.
Here we have Stephanie and Mia.
Both their torsos are printed.
Nice hair pieces.
They are equipped with slots
on the top and the side
for hair accessories.
Here we have black pony.
She is wearing a saddle of some sort.
Here we have a rope on the top.
I call this "hold on, and don't fall off" rope.
I don't know the official name of the saddle or rope.
I'm not a horseman.
You can re move the saddle to sit the insert inside the horse.
She is one nice pony.
Very nice.
Next we have an adorable white pony
with a light purple saddle.
On the left, we have another insert
to replace the saddle.
Now I don't know what this contraption is.
It's meant to spin the horse around.
Let's have some fun with this.
Let's put Mia on the pony.
She doesn't have her safety gear.
So we'll take care of that.
This set does come with an extra riding helmet.
This one is got the red hair in the back.
Sot the first thing we're going to have to do Mia
is to take your hair off
and to pop on the hat.
We got to be safe when riding the pony. Right?
No!
Get that on correctly.
Being a bit stubborn I see.
Alrighty.
She's ready to go riding.
Here we go!

You're going to fly off the little pony.
If this plate were bigger,
this wouldn't be flying around.
It is nice.
Nice indeed.
On the left,
we have a water and feeding trough.
The Riding Club does come with a green apple and a carrot.
There are studs inside the water trough for water.
On the right,
we have a bucket
and some horse products
to take care of the ponies.
So we have a scrub brush,
a bar of soap,
a hair pick,
and another brush.
Looks like we have containers
full of some sort of product
for the ponies.
Let's look at the hurdle.
We have a 1 by 6 plate with a few tiles
This is adjustable.
The pony can jump over the hurdle.
Pretty cool.
On the right, we have two cups
and a ribbon for awards.
Finally we have the stables.
It is a nice build.
However, it's suppose to have a lot of stickers
that I choose not to put on.
I am talking about tons of stickers.
Right above the entry, we have a 2 by 2 flat tile.
That's the only piece that's printed.
I like the arch.
Really nice
along with the profile bricks.
On the right, we have what appears to be a store.
I like the antenna on top.
This is possibly used for wind direction.
On the left, we have two stables.
The gates do open up.
We have an extra saddle.
We have another spot as well for the other saddle.
These gates appear to be a bit sloppy.
They go in a little bit,
and they stop.
There should have been a stop added to the bottom
to prevent them from going inward.
Let's put the pony inside the stall.
Let's backup in there.
You did such a good job jumping over the hurdle.
You need a break.
We have a flag on the top-left.
That required a sticker too.
Here's the interior.
There's no roof
except for above the little bedroom.
These two tiles were suppose to have prints of sleeping bags
that I choose not to put on.
I'm not a big fan of this gap on the roof.
Now on the bottom-left,
this is suppose to be a store I believe,
or maybe to wash and take care of the horses.
I don't really know.
These sets don't come with labels.
We do have an extra riding helmet.
An entry into the stables.
We got a nice bench.
These were suppose to have stickers.
Here are the two stables.
Plenty of room inside for the horse.
We got some extra hay
and an extra rope or harness.
There's even a saddle on the bottom-right.
On the top, it looks like we have a restaurant.
Let's hope I don't break this while tipping it over.
So we have a pie.
A container with something green inside. [Laughs]
Looks like berries
and a container.
We have a nice eating booth.
It's a nice build.
Honestly it looks a bit unfinished.
The front of it looks good.
It's just the interior is left to be desired of.
If this were to have some sort of roof on top,
this would look really nice.
I guess it's left up to the imagination,
but it is a nice stable.
On the left, we have a Brick Separator.
This does come in handy.
On the right we have various hair ribbons,
a few flat tiles,
studs,
an extra flower stem,
and other various bricks
which may come in handy for other Lego creations.
This concludes the review for
Heartlake Riding Club by Lego Friends.

It is a nice set.
There's a lot of stickers that need to be put on.
Other than that,
it does come with plenty of accessories
as well as Stephanie and Mia.
This will be a perfect addition for any Lego Friends theme,
Lego city,
or as a source for spare parts.

Caramelized sugar cockerel on a stick - DIY How to make Lollipops ♡ English subtitles - Duration: 5:07.
Hello! My name is Elena Bazhenova.
I am glad to welcome you at my kitchen!
Remembering my childhood, I want to make a favorite delicacy of all the children of the USSR.
These are lollipops. They were also called "Petushok" (Cockerel).
Then we didn`t have chupa-chups there, and our grandmothers and mothers were preparing such sweets. It was fantastic!
The recipe is very simple and I will share it with you.
We will need: 6-9 tbsps water, 9 tbsps sugar,
1 tbsp wine or apple cider vinegar or lemon juice or 1 pinch citric acid,
a little vegetable oil
and wooden sticks.
Sharp tips are better breaking off.
And a mold for sugar candies.
I inherited it.
Price was 3 rubles.
It consists of two halves.
I will make solid caramelized sugar fish, squirrel and bear.
Unfortunately, there are no cockerels.
Apply thick coat of a vegetable oil to the candy mold.
It is better to do it with a finger.
Make this to avoid these candies sticking to the mold.
Coat two halves.
Connect the two halves together.
Fix it with staples.
Set aside.
Let`s cook!
Pour the sugar into the pan.
Water.
Add the lemon juice.
Turn on the medium heat.
Bring to a boil, stirring occasionally.
The syrup is boiled.
Reduce the heating to a minimum.
Keep nudging gently until all the sugar is liquid and has acquired a nice caramel color.
Check the readiness of caramel.
Take the caramel with a spoon.
A droplet stretches.
Drip into a cold water.
Check.
If it is not soft, then caramel is ready.
It rings like a bead.
We can make the lollipops.
I cooked golden brown caramel.
To get a darker color, you can boil more.
Caramel is ready.
Take the mold.
Pour the caramel into the molds.
At once, while caramel is hot, stick in the lollipop sticks.
Let them cool completely before you pop them out and enjoy.
Check the lollipops.
The stick does not move.
Open the mold.
The mold is still warm.
Take out.
I already made a few lollipops.
If you do not have a special candy mold, then you can use a small silicone mold for hot temperature.
You will get a small and nice candies.
I cooked marine lollipops.
Instead of water, you can use juices, milk.
You can add cocoa powder, cinnamon, nutmeg.
This is your play caramel and you can try out different things with it.
Such candies are wrapped in food film and stored at room temperature.
Cook with pleasure and enjoy!
