Korea-Japan Hanmadang Festival 2017 held in Seoul, Tokyo for civil interactions - Duration: 2:53.

A cultural exchange event between Korea and Japan was held in Seoul and Tokyo over the

weekend.

The Hanmadang Festival is the largest and oldest civil interaction event between the

two neighboring countries.

Our Oh Jung-hee with more from Tokyo.

(Stand-up) "The oldest and largest cultural exchange

event between Korea and Japan is taking place this weekend.

The Korea-Japan Hanmadang Festival 2017 is now held both here in Tokyo and in Seoul."

The festival was established in 2005 when Korea and Japan celebrated the 40th anniversary

of normalizing diplomatic relations.

First held in 2009, the festival's been held every year both in Seoul and Tokyo at the

same time... to deepen bilateral ties and share each others' culture.

(Korean ) "In recent years, Korea's relationship with

Japan has been fairly uncomfortable... but I think Tokyo wants to start a new and fresh

relationship with the new administration in Seoul.

The basic foundation for that should be cultural interactions on a civil level."

(Korean ) "We hope Korea and Japan walk together on

various fronts.

Culture has power.

It has the power to lead to greater cooperation in political, economic and social aspects."

The main focus of the festival is a series of Korean and Japanese performances of traditional

dance and martial arts.

This year, Korean teams are presenting Samulnori, a Traditional Fan dance, Taekwondo and more...

and Japanese teams perform Eisa dances, Yosakoi and Karate.

A K-POP concert is also scheduled for Sunday.

(Japanese ) "The traditional dances were beautiful and

the modern media art performance was dynamic and exciting.

It was so enjoyable to watch."

As well as the performances, dozens of booths are set up for visitors to try out diverse

activities related to Korean culture.

Making crafts with Korean paper Hanji or wearing Korea's traditional dress Hanbok are only

a few of them.

But, of course, what draws the most attention... is the food.

(Japanese ) "I liked Dakgalbi , or stir-fried chicken,

the most I've tried Kimbab and Tteokbokki and they were good as well.

Korean food is really tasty except that it's a little spicy for me."

With the theme for this year's festival set as "Going together with one heart,"... Korea

and Japan hope to advance their relations into a future-oriented one.

The festival continues until Sunday in Tokyo... and will also take place in southern Seoul

on the same day.

Oh Jung-hee, Arirang News, Tokyo.

Cool morning turns to summer like afternoon _ 092517 - Duration: 1:49.

Good morning.

The nation was covered by toxic smog over the weekend, but today we are expecting better

air quality.

Meanwhile, a chilly morning will turn into a somewhat summer-like afternoon under partly

to mostly sunny skies.

Taking a closer look at today's temperatures... lows in Seoul and Daejoen were at 19 degrees

Celsius,... while Busan and Jeju saw lows of 20 and 21 degrees.

Those of you in inland regions and the west coast will need to be aware of the morning

fog.

We'll see more sun as the day goes on.. and more sunshine is expected the further north

you are.

Highs will be in the upper twenties, getting up to 29 degrees Celsius in the capital and

Daejeon... while Daegu and Gwangju will make it to 28 degrees.

We will have warm conditions until Tuesday...then nationwide showers on Wednesday will bring

a chill to the air.

Lows will plummet to the low teens and a lot cooler highs are on the way.

That's Korea for you and here's a look at the weather conditions around the world.

U.S. bombers fly north of DMZ in show of force - Duration: 0:52.

The U.S. Air Force flew two B-1B Lancers above waters east of North Korea over the weekend,...

demonstrating its range of military options against the regime's threats.

It was, according to the Pentagon, the farthest north of the DMZ that *any U.S. fighter jet

or a bomber has flown in the 21st century.

Calling the regime's weapons program a "grave threat," Pentagon spokeswoman Dana White said

the mission was a demonstration of U.S. resolve,... adding that Washington is prepared to use

the full range of military capabilities to defend its homeland and its allies.

South Korea's presidential office said the latest deployment was closely coordinated

between Seoul and Washington,... referring to it as one of the most effective countermeasures

against North Korea's nuclear and missile programs.

Analog Returns in the Digital Age - Duration: 5:46.

In the rapidly changing digital age, analog culture is receiving renewed attention as

a way to revive dried-up emotions.

In addition to elderly generations, younger people more accustomed to digital culture

are also increasingly enjoying analog culture.

We investigated the reason.

This building is located in a residential area of Yeonhee-dong , Seoul.

The shop is a film photography studio, a type of business largely taken over by digital

cameras.

What's more, it specializes in black and white pictures.

Since opening in 2015, it's become Seoul's top black and white speciality studio.

Why was it launched as a film-photography studio when everything else has gone digital?

(Korean) "Unlike film photography digital photographic

work is different.

Deficiencies in the shots can be re-touched.

This leads to diminished attention when taking pictures.

There was a desire to return to the roots.

That's how the idea to operate a film photography studio came about."

Black and white photos are taken with a limited number of cuts on film, and developed and

printed through an analog process in a dark room.

Only 3 customers can make a reservation each day.

(Korean) "At our studio film is dried naturally for

about a day.

After that comes the printing process.

It takes two or three hours to print a single image."

Recently, black and white polaroids which are cheaper and quicker to take have also

become popular.

(Korean) "With black and white polaroids, a single

photo can be taken right away, so it's much cheaper than film.

Black and white polaroids appeal to younger people, since a single shot costs about 26

dollars.

Couples often come to take a picture."

Black and white polaroids target younger generations with almost no memories of analog-type photos.

(Korean) "After taking pictures on my phone every day,

it's nice to have one picture to keep."

(Korean) "It can't be re-touched, and the photo is

one-of-a-kind.

It's very special, and I think it was a meaningful experience."

An LP shop started business in Itaewon, a hot spot for young generations.

LPs. once completely eliminated from the record market, represent the analog retro trend.

(Korean) "Generally everyone tends to listen to streaming

music.

But as recently as the 80s or 90s, LPs, cassette tapes and CDs were the major developed formats,

which people purchased to consume.

The shop was prepared so that customers could find happiness by purchasing and owning analog

media like LPs and cassette tapes."

About 800 customers visit each day, on average.

The unique tone of LPs, not available with digital music, is one of the reasons for their

resurgence.

(Korean) "I really like 70s and 80s music.

It's different from listening to files.

Listening directly to LPs offers an old-school feel, so it's enjoyable."

Another reason for the growing popularity is a higher collectability factor among youths,

thanks to famous pop stars and top idol groups releasing limited-edition LPs.

(Korean) "Many customers buy LPs as goods.

LPs or vinyl media are now being propagated as hip media, so it appears some people want

to demonstrate purchasing turntables and LPs to listen to music."

The popularity of LPs is a global trend.

With LPs enjoying a second renaissance, a domestic LP factory which shut down 13 years

ago recently re-opened.

The LP craze is expected to continue into the future.

This transcription group has been going since last year.

Most participants are office workers who make time to attend meetings.

(SOV) "Read books silently, and then copy any passages

you might like."

( .)

"Okay."

(" )

Rather than reading with their eyes only, transcribing each letter by hand offers mental

stability.

(Korean) "Reviews of transcription gatherings say that

they offered the best rest of the week, and that it was possible to be more immersed in

reading."

Offline gatherings are also a way to share warmth and companionship.

(Korean) "People feel a sense of rest most of all.

Daily life is so busy, people are practicing a slower lifestyle, such as the hygge life

or healing life."

The analog trend is expecting to continue, rather than becoming a passing fad.

(Korean) "Human beings promote mechanization, but human

thoughts or emotions therein were made since the past and grew from there.

In line with mechanical development, analog thoughts will gradually survive.

In the end, future success will depend on a fusion of digital devices and analog human

sensibilities.

It's important to live wisely in the digi-log era."

A return to analog culture amid the speed and convenience of the digital era could be

seen as voluntary inconvenience.

0925 King Jeongjo's visit to royal tomb perfectly reenacted in 222 years - Duration: 2:50.

A reenactment of King Jeongjo's tomb parade was held over the weekend in the capital Seoul,...

Thousands of citizens followed in the footsteps of the 18th century king's historic visit

to his father's tomb from Seoul to Hwaseong... to shed light on the filial piety of the Joseon-era

leader.

Kim Mok-yeon has more.

It's the 21st century, but for thousands of Koreans this weekend was back to the Joseon

Dynasty.

The royal procession of King Jeongjo to honor his father was perfectly reenacted for the

first time in 222 years.

King Jeongjo was Joseon's 22nd monarch, and he played a major role in restoring and reforming

Korea's central government.

This year's event, on the sidelines of the Suwon Hwaseong cultural festival, reenacted

King Jeongjo's visit to the tomb of his father, Crown Prince Sado, in 1795,... a procession

which took nearly 8 days.

The trip was marked as historically significant because King Jeongjo's procession was the

largest one ever seen, and when they arrived in Hwaseong he also hosted a lavish banquet

to celebrate the 60th birthday of his mother, Queen Haekyunggung Hong.

This gesture has since been regarded by Koreans as an outstanding example of filial piety.

(KOREAN) "I came to see this historic event with my

family.

Because King Jeongjo's procession highlights his love for his parents, I hope my children

can learn a lot from it and not only think about us, but also about their grandparents."

[STAND UP] What's extra special about this year's event

is that it will be the first time the parade will go the full 59.2 kilometers from Seoul

to Hwaseong in Gyeonggi-do province.

Last year, the reenactment ended in Suwon, but this year, we will be able to see King

Jeongjo visit Yungneung, his father's tomb.

As the parade reached the Janganmun Gate on its final leg, some 16 teams of participants

who tagged along with the procession demonstrated all kinds of performances including folk games,

martial art performances, and even a huge flashmob.

Some 4,600 people participated in this year's event, together with nearly 700 horses, which

is nearly double the figures of last year.

The organizers said this time they tried to encourage citizen participation, as they received

more than 200 citizen voluteers who wanted to take on major roles in the parade, including

those of King Jeongjo and his mother.

(KOREAN) "We were finally able to fulfill King Jeongjo's

dreams together.

We were able to show how active public participation can convey hope and creativity."

During the finale, Suwon city Mayor Yeom Tae-young thanked all those who made the event possible

and pledged all out efforts to develop the event and make it more fruitful in the coming

years.
