It's your childhood hero, depending on how old you are.
Any M3 is a fun car with appeal, wether you're a BMW fan or not.
The E46 M3 is affordable second-hand and an okay number is for sale now.
So, what's the catch? We'll tell you what to watch out for later.
First, a bit of M3 history.
It's wider compared to a 3 Series coupe. The track is wider too.
It has flared wheel arches and a different front bumper and hood.
The power dome was necessary to make room for the S54 engine.
Four exhaust tips; can't be missed.
It has a different rear bumper... I have to use some brain power.
It's a cool 3 Series. You immediately see it's an M3.
This is an M3 CSL, a real collector's item. The prices for these cars rose quickly.
The prices are more stable now, but you never know how this will develop.
Looking at the specs on paper, a CSL may not be that interesting.
A normal M3 E46 gets 338 hp from a naturally aspirated 3.2 engine.
That's a lot of hp per liter.
That's why this engine became International Engine of the Year five times and the best newcomer.
Everyone was excited about this engine, but the CSL has only 17 hp extra on paper.
355 hp in total.
They did this with different camshafts, a lighter exhaust, and the famed carbon air box.
It's not about the extra hp, but about this.
Listen to it.
It's really pretty. It's a really cool sound.
The sound is brilliant, inside and out, especially at high rpm.
You hear fuel being converted in forward motion.
An E46 M3 can keep up with current traffic.
It's not like we were only impressed back in the days. It's still a fast car that demands respect.
ENGINES gasoline
A number of things. Sales numbers. The coupe was the bestseller with 54,000 cars.
It was also available as a convertible, of which less than 30,000 cars were sold.
This CSL is one of 1,383, of which 29 are pre-production cars according to the annals.
How many are left is a mystery, just like how many fakes are out there.
You can change an M3 to CSL specs.
That doesn't matter. The M3 CS didn't have the light-weight things, but it did have other goodies.
For example, different ESP software, wheels, etc.
That's a desirable version too. It's the Competition Package, but more often it's called the M3 CS.
600 of those were made, making it the rarer car.
About 20 E46 M3s are for sale on Marktplaats.
You get to choose coupe or convertible in different colors, but there's another choice.
A manual transmission or the SMG2 transmission?
The manual transmission is nicer. The SMG2 transmission is standard for the CSL.
It's an option to remove the clutch pedal. It's a robotized manual transmission.
You heard us complain about this before. The transmission shifts gears slowly.
You have a pause. I'll show you.
Create some distance so I can accelerate.
I accelerate and shift gears. It does this to your head. It slows down and accelerates again.
Every robotized single-clutch transmission does this, but it's standard for the CSL.
The most desirable version always has an SMG transmission.
There aren't as many cars for sale now. It feels like it used to be more.
About 20 cars can be found on Marktplaats.
The cars are getting older, so some have disappeared, but there are basement collections too.
It's still an iconic car, especially a low-mileage CSL.
You can find an E46 M3 for less than 20,000 euros.
It'll have a high mileage. This doesn't say anything about its condition, but it won't be mint.
If you want a mint car, you'll have to pay double.
If you want an M3 CSL, double the price again.
They're rare and wanted.
Manual vs SMG transmission is about 50-50. 2/3 is a coupe and 1/3 is a convertible.
A convertible is less hardcore, but it's nice to have it as a second car for open-top cruising.
PRICES minimum, maximum
There are a number of things to watch out for with the body. First, damage and repaired damage.
These cars are more potent and became available for young men with less budget and driving skills.
Look for it. Damage doesn't have to be a problem, but you don't want it as a collector.
The convertible top... Casper made a nice video about convertibles.
If you're buying a convertible, watch that video. It needs to close properly without having to push it.
This would indicate the car has been damaged.
The E46 M3 rusts less than a 3 Series.
There are two places to check: the rear wheel arches and around the rear window.
Those are the first places where rust can happen.
Because of its age there can be something wrong with the rubber parts in the suspension.
Specific things to watch out for: brakes and tires.
Why? They're expensive for cars like these.
The standard brakes aren't great, so replace them with aftermarket solutions.
Especially if you want to take it to the track, the standard brakes aren't sufficient.
The tires are more expensive too because of their size and the car's potential.
If a previous owner skimped on costs, I think that's a bad sign.
The previous owner may have skimped on maintenance costs too.
You don't want this with an M3.
Neither with any other car, but you don't want this especially with sporty cars.
The M3's heart is the engine up front.
Check the documents. It should've had its first oil change at 2,000 km (1,200 miles).
It really should have gotten this. Check the documents for maintenance; where and what.
It's crucial with these cars.
The engine is relatively reliable, but there are a number of things to consider.
Annoyingly, you can't always see it from the outside.
For example, the bearing shells of the connecting rod.
Nice word for Scrabble. These can wear.
If you notice this because it makes sounds, you're too late. Extra damage happened.
There are discussions on Internet as to when you have to take care of this.
There has been a recall for the connecting rod bearing shells, plus the oil pump.
This was for cars built before April 2003. April cars are fine.
These cars will potentially have a new oil pump and bearing shells installed under warranty.
The bearing shells need changing every 100,000 km (62,000 miles), depending on how the car is used.
If mom only took it to market... Or if you redline it like I do, they can wear faster.
You can't see it from the outside.
Problems with the Vanos variable camshaft adjustment are easier to spot.
The camshaft adjusts itself for more torque at low rpm and more hp at high rpm.
An M3 engine should go through its paces without strange dips.
If it doesn't and has an irregular idle, stalls, and burns more fuel...
That's annoying because you don't have a reference.
These things indicate that the Vanos may malfunction.
This can be caused by a number of things. The magnet valves don't open or close properly.
You'll feel this when putting it through its paces. It works on oil pressure, so the seals can dry out.
The standard seals BMS used weren't great, so these things can happen.
If it doesn't run as it should, check the Vanos.
The SMG transmission won't be smooth, but it should shift gears properly.
This transmission has its pauses. There are a number of different shift modes. Try them all.
It'll shift faster and more aggressive. It's important to know the state of the transmission.
There aren't many electronics to check in this CSL.
Radio and A/C weren't standard, but most customers ordered these things.
It's no fun driving without A/C and a radio.
The displays of the radio and satnav can have dead pixels.
The central locking module can die too.
The gear shifter of the manual transmission has a light. It should work.
It's no disaster if it doesn't work, but it'll be fun if it does.
The self-dimming rearview mirror contains a fluid that can sink.
You'll see a line. This one is fine.
The fluid sinks and it's expensive to replace. These are expensive units.
This M3 CSL has less than 100,000 km (62,000 miles) on the clock.
Don't drive too much or it'll go over it. We found it at Wensink in Heerenveen.
Driving this car was on my bucket list. Driving an M3 CSL is really cool.
I'm not a fan of the SMG transmission, but the sound...
This version is great with the carbon details and the light sport seats without the heavy power unit.
It's a cool car.
