Why do we dream? - Duration: 4:41.

[ INTRO ]

Oh hey Squeaks!

I just woke up from the weirdest dream.

You were there, Squeaks, and so was our friend Dino, except he was a full-grown dinosaur!

I think he was a T. rex … whew.

Strange.

I wonder why I dreamed that!

Dreams can seem confusing, but scientists think we have them for a reason.

When we go to sleep at night, it can look like our bodies and our brains are turning

off.

But while the rest of your body is resting and recharging, your brain is actually working

pretty hard – and showing you dreams, like a movie going on inside your head!

When you're dreaming, some parts of your brain are switched on and working hard – like

the ones that think about what you see, and some of the parts that focus on your feelings.

Meanwhile, the part that does some of your more complicated thinking, like by asking

great questions – like why you're suddenly able to fly, for example – is turned off.

So if dream-you is flying, you can just enjoy the ride!

While you sleep, your brain is going through a bunch of different steps, then starting

over from the beginning.

That happens a few times every night.

At first, you sleep very lightly.

You might feel like you're still awake, even while you're dozing off.

Then, your brain starts to slow down a little more.

Your sleep gets a little deeper.

You might have a few dreams, but they're more likely to be about what you were doing

the day — nothing too nutty.

But then comes the weirdest part of the night.

During this step, your breathing and your heart beat slow down a little.

Your body is completely still, but behind your eyelids, your eyes are moving around

a lot, in what we call rapid eye movement, or REM sleep for short.

REM sleep is really important for your body, and it's when you'll have the most epic,

story-like dreams, and the ones that you'll remember best in the morning.

Some people remember lots of crazy details from their dreams, and some people don't.

But even if you don't remember your dreams very well, you still have them.

Everybody does, and some other animals do too!

All mammals – animals like dogs and cats and humans and rats – experience REM sleep,

and so do some birds.

During sleep, our brains sort out all the information we've been taking in while we're

awake.

Some of your dreams might be about things that happened during the day, like playing

with your friends at school.

But then your dreams can start to jump into all kinds of wacky stories.

Maybe you're bouncing around on the moon, or having a conversation with a giant talking

lemon!

So why do our brains put on this big production for us every night?

We may never know for sure, but scientists have a few ideas.

Over the course of a day, you're hearing and seeing and smelling millions of little

details about the world around you.

And while you sleep, your brain needs to find the most important things you've just learned,

so that it can store it away in your memory for good.

That way, you'll be able to remember it for years.

Some scientists think that's what dreams are for — they help you figure out the most

important things you learned during the day.

That helps you remember them, and connect them with things you've learned before,

so that you're ready to learn more new things tomorrow!

We might also need dreams to help us sort out the feelings we've had during the day.

If you've been scared or worried about something, you might have a dream about being scared

or worried about a different thing at night, to help you work out how you feel.

That might help you be more prepared to tackle the scary thing the next morning!

Other scientists don't think that dreams are related to memories or feelings at all!

Even though your brain still needs sleep to sort out your feelings and memories, it could

be that the movies you see in your dreams just come from your brain calming down after

a long day.

Some people try to use dreams to help them figure out what's bothering them, or to

help them solve problems.

A lot of creative people, like people who write songs or make movies, and even scientists,

get ideas in their dreams!

They connect what they've been thinking about during the day to what they already

know, and in their dreams, they'll suddenly have an awesome idea!

No matter what our brains use dreams for, we know that we need sleep to help us learn,

and to help us feel great when we wake up!

And on that note …

I'm ready to enjoy whatever adventure my brain has waiting for me when I fall asleep!

How about you, Squeaks?

What's the weirdest dream you've ever had?

Do you have any questions for us about sleeping, or anything at all?

Ask a grownup to help you leave a comment below, or send us an email at kids@scishow.com.

We'll see you next time, here at the Fort!

The TRUTH About Dating Someone with Different Political Beliefs - Duration: 5:05.

Heya playa, politics can be super devise and confusing.

Especially if you like someone that has way different political beliefs from you.

Well that's the question that CoolFun 11 asked me when he said "I've known my crush for 2

years now, she's pretty nice but we have huge differences in terms of politics.

It goes to the level when we argue about it for hours and we start insulting each-other.

I like her very much and would like to know her better.

What should I do?".

I have an answer for you that I think will help you out in this situation so I'm gonna

share that with you right after this.

This is The Josh Speaks.

You're watching The Josh Speaks.

For those of you that are new here, my name is Josh and every single Monday through Friday

I make videos sharing tips, ideas and stories teaching you how to be your best self.

And I just want to say right off the bat that this is not a political video.

In fact it's a video about how to bring two people of different political beliefs together.

You may be thinking why even bother?

That person is clearly wrong, and they're an idiot and what they believe is stupid.

You're probably thinking all of those things but that doesn't have to be the case when

you interact with them.

Look, every single one of us is shaped by all the different factors around us.

Our family, our friends, our culture, our society, our country.

All these different things play a role in how we see the world.

So just because someone see's the world differently from you doesn't mean that they're wrong or

they're a bad person or you should have nothing to do with them.

On the contrary, I think you should engage with them more because challenging your own

ways of thinking is good for you.

When you expose yourself to new ideas, you start to learn how to talk about them and

interact with those kinds of conversations a lot better.

So talking to someone with different political beliefs helps you understand their side a

little bit better.

But does that all get thrown out the window when you start to have romantic feelings for

them?

Most likely you're feeling conflicted.

On one end you're like "This person is wrong on so many levels" but then on the other you're

like "But I really want to get to know them and hang out and really develop something

there".

So how do you approach it in a way where the two of you aren't budding heads to the point

where you're yelling and screaming at each other?

Well, the simplest way to go about it is to find common ground in your beliefs.

You may feel like there is no common ground but I guarantee you, there is.

You simply have to look at the deeper values that you and the other person hold and compare

them.

For example, are one of your values to live a life where you're kind and understanding

towards other people?

Chances are your crush is like that too but it's getting watered down with all the political

stuff getting thrown on top of it.

What we all for the most part want at our core is to live a life of compassion and kindness,

of peace and security, and safety and tolerance.

All these core values represent who we are as people but when you start to look at political

parties to see what they're doing and we start to see when things are happening at this higher

up level, we kind of let their actions and decisions translate to our day to day behavior.

So if you find yourself constantly fighting with your crush over a political action that's

happened, bring the conversation back down to your individual values and how you choose

to live day to day.

If you can get the conversation going on that level, it's easier for you to recognize the

person you're talking to is just a person that's trying to figure it all out as well.

No one has all the right answers because life is just too complex.

So if you feel yourself getting pulled into a conversation with your crush that's heading

into a negative direction, don't be afraid to bring it back down to your values where

the two of you connect.

Discussing policies is ok, but you have to recognize that at a certain level, you don't

have any control over how the decisions are made.

So, focus within the scope of what you can do.

And I think that brings it back down to you reconnecting with your crush.

Learning a little bit more about them, who they are as a person, how they came to believe

what they believe.

I think if you take the time to get to know them on that level, it'll be way easier for

you to develop something going forward.

If you take that time to get to know them better as a person they'll feel way more open

and comfortable sharing how they came to their beliefs with you, which is really the core

of what you want to know.

If you're only focused on what they're saying and not how and why they're saying it then

you're never really going to develop that deepness with them.

So remember political discussions tend to be extrinsic where you're focused on what

other people are deciding.

Now that doesn't mean that those decisions don't have an effect on your life and the

lives of the people around you, but what you have control over is your own individual destiny.

How you choose to move forward day to day and your crush is just the same.

So try to connect with them on that level, see where you guys connect on values and approach

conversations with the same kind of values there.

What do you think though, am I just flat out wrong?

Do you feel like it's impossible to form a different connection with someone who has

different political beliefs?

Leave your comments down below and we'll talk about it.

If you're in this situation and you want to share your thoughts in a more private setting,

you can always shoot me a DM over on Snapchat or Instagram.

I do my best to answer as many messages as I can.

Otherwise thank you so much for watching this video.

Hit the thumbs up button if you found it to be helpful in some way.

Look, approaching these kind of conversations where two people come from different ways

of seeing the world is difficult.

It's not an easy thing to do but it is possible to form a connection because at the end of

the day, we're all people and that's what really matters.

As always guys, love and peace.

Devin Nunes On Hillary Clinton With These Seven Words - Duration: 2:52.

Devin Nunes Dropped The Hammer On Hillary Clinton With These Seven Words.

There is only one real scandal about collusion during the 2016 campaign.

And it has nothing to do with Donald Trump.

During an interview on Fox News Channel, Devin Nunes dropped the hammer on Hillary Clinton

with seven words.

Nunes appeared on Hannity to discuss the recent developments in the Russia investigation.

He was responding to the Democrats political memo, which ended up being nothing more than

talking points designed to distract from the real scandal the fact that the FBI used a

fake news dossier paid for by the Clinton campaign to spy on the Trump campaign.

And make no mistake, it allowed them to spy on the Trump campaign.

The warrant allowed the FBI to look at emails and texts while Carter Page was a member of

the Trump campaign.

Nunes also blasted the Clinton campaign for being the one engaged in collusion.

They paid money that was funneled to a foreign spy who put together a hoax dossier in order

to swing the election.

But more worrisome for Clinton was when Nunes declared that, "It's clear collusion and

no one is investigating it."

That was a distinct call for Attorney General Jeff Sessions to appoint a special counsel

to investigate the real collusion scandal during the 2016 election Hillary Clinton and

the foreign spy who worked with the Russians to try and destroy Trump.

Here's the question he posed.

"If we look at the memo that came out of Chuck Grassley's committee today, Steele

gathered much of his information from Russian government sources inside of Russia.

So if I put the two memos together — the new one tonight, yours from Friday — Hillary

Clinton paid for Russian propaganda, turned out to be lies, not verified, then used for

a FISA warrant, and I'm, like, not only was it paid for to manipulate and lie to the

American people but then to spy on an opposition party candidate.

Sir, are there crimes committed here?"

Before we get to Nunes's answer, let's parse what Hannity asked.

He refers to this sentence in the Grassley-Graham memo: "On the face of the dossier, it appears

that Mr. Steele gathered much of his information from Russian government sources inside Russia."

There are two ways to read that sentence.

One way is that Steele talked to people who worked for the government who shared information

they weren't supposed to, in the way that a media outlet might talk to a source in the

White House who talks under the cover of anonymity.

The other way it can be read is that government officials were using Steele to spread misinformation

deliberately.

Do you agree a special counsel should investigate Hillary Clinton for collusion?

What do you think about this?

What's the difference between American & British English? 🇺🇸🇬🇧 - Duration: 15:23.

Hello! I'm Emma from mmmEnglish!

My students are always asking me:

What's the difference

between British English and American English?

Which one's the best?

Which one should I learn?

It's really confusing!

In my last lesson I talked about which type of English

you should learn.

You can watch that right here if you missed it.

But in this lesson

we are going to look at the main differences

between standard British English

and standard American English.

While it's incorrect to say that one type of English

is better than the other

or that one is more correct than the other,

it is important to be aware of the differences

between British and American English.

And focus on the type of English that is most

relevant for you.

And that is what this lesson is all about.

The main areas that you'll notice differences between

British and American English are

accent, obviously, spelling, vocabulary

and some areas of grammar including use of

prepositions and use of collective nouns.

Now if you are studying for an English exam,

applying for or studying at an English University

or using English professionally for your job

then this lesson is especially important for you!

Usually in all of these situations,

you need to pay attention to spelling and grammar rules

because it can affect your score or even your reputation.

Okay so let's talk about some of these differences.

Starting with accent.

It's probably the most obvious difference.

But the difference is not as simple as British

and American accents, right?

Regional accents

in both of these countries can differ dramatically.

Someone from South London sounds very different

than someone from Scotland.

And both sound very different from the Queen of England.

And it's the same in America,

the accent can vary significantly

depending on where you are in the country.

That said, if we compare standard British English

and standard American English accents,

there are a few clear differences.

There are differences in the way

that vowels are pronounced.

Okay so we would say hot hot.

Ant.

We say ant.

Ant. Ant.

Leisure. Leisure. Leisure.

Leisure.

Americans tend to pronounce a flap T

when the letter T is between two vowel sounds.

Like in these words.

The flap T is a flatter sound

that actually sounds more like a D.

Water. Water.

Bottle. Bottle.

Little. Little.

Daughter. Daughter.

Hear that flap T sound?

Its also very common in my Australian accent as well.

Standard American English clearly pronounces

the R after a vowel sound

where most British English speakers don't.

So for example,

car, car.

Burger, burger.

And I just say burger.

Daughter, daughter.

You can hear some more of those examples

in this video right here.

Okay so accent is one difference.

But there are some more frustrating differences

that can actually get you into trouble, like spelling.

Americans spell English words differently

to the rest of us.

Some of you may actually think that the

American spelling is easier.

It was changed only a few hundred years ago

from the British way to a new American English way.

And the reason was to make words

look more phonetic.

So words are actually spelt more like they sound.

It makes a lot of sense right?

Words that end in -our in British English

so think about the words

colour, honour, neighbour.

They simply end in -or in American English.

In British English verbs that end in an L

after a short vowel sound

have a double L when -ed or -ing are added.

Travelled or modelling for example.

But in American English there is only one L.

Jewellery is another example of this

though even more changes were made to make jewellery

more phonetic.

Words ending in -ise in British English

end in -ize in American English.

Like realise, organise words.

Words ending in -re in British English

end in -er in American English, most of the time.

Like in the word centre.

Words ending in -ence in British English

end in -ense in American English

like defence and license.

You'll also find some small differences with past forms

of regular verbs.

So the past tense of learn in American English is learnt

but in British English learned or learnt is possible.

Though the -ed form is more common where I'm from.

Notice that the pronunciation is the same.

The same rule applies for dreamt and burnt.

As an extra hint make sure you're using a spellcheck tool

that is set to the type of English that you're learning,

so that it's correcting your spelling

with the right type of English.

Vocabulary.

The most frustrating difference between

British and American English is surely vocabulary

- even for native speakers!

There are hundreds of everyday words

that are just different.

And to make matters worse, Australian English

Canadian English, New Zealander English

South African English,

can also use different words for the same thing.

The difference is really obvious in nouns

especially food, where each type of English

has different nouns for the same thing.

So for example the herb coriander

is called cilantro in America, nothing alike!

And there are heaps of differences just like that.

I made a whole video about it right here.

These differences in vocabulary are something

that even native English speakers

have to try and understand too.

We don't always know exactly

what another English speaker is talking about

because we use different words for the same thing.

In those situations,

we usually try to use the context of the sentence

to understand what this new word is.

And if we still don't know, we just have to ask.

If you know what type of English you need,

then I highly recommend

finding a native English teacher

who can help you to learn and understand

the English vocabulary that is used in that place.

Cambly is a really great place for you to do that

because they've got native English teachers from

all English-speaking countries.

So if you're travelling to Canada,

you can find a Canadian teacher to help you.

If you're applying for a university in the United Kingdom,

then find a teacher who uses the accent, the vocabulary

and the spelling rules

that will get you really great results in your exams.

It will just make it so much easier for you

once you arrive.

And you can try a free 15-minute lesson with Cambly

by using the link in the description just below this video.

I've had a chat to a few different teachers there

and they've been super friendly and helpful

so I really recommend it!

Now, prepositions are confusing enough

without me telling you that sometimes

American and British English

use prepositions differently.

But don't worry.

Most of them are exactly the same

but there's just a few that you need to be aware of

because they're used differently.

"What are you doing on the weekend"

is common in American English

whereas "What are you doing at the weekend"

is more commonly used in the UK.

In Australia we mostly use 'on'.

When talking about a period in a week,

'through' is really common in American English.

My brother works Monday through Friday

whereas 'to' is more common in British English

and also Australian English.

My brother works Monday to Friday.

These mean exactly the same thing.

The good news is that native English speakers

will understand you no matter what

whichever one you choose.

So it's not a major problem,

it's just something that you need to be aware of.

There are a couple of small differences in grammar

between American and British English.

You've probably already been confused at somepoint

by 'get' in past participle form.

Is it I have got or I have gotten?

And this is simply a difference between

British and American English.

When describing something that has recently occurred

that affects the present moment,

I would use the present perfect probably.

But my American friends would likely use

the past simple tense instead.

So let me explain with an example.

If I've just eaten a big meal and someone asked

if I want to dessert,

I'd say "No thanks I've eaten too much!"

But an American would probably choose the past simple

and simply say "No thanks, I ate too much!"

Someone speaking British English would probably

choose to use the present perfect tense in this situation

Collective nouns, which are nouns that refer

to a group of things.

Like a group of students is called a class

or a group of colleagues working on the same project

is a team.

Or a group of cows is called a herd.

A family, an audience, a crowd.

These are all examples of collective nouns.

And British English and American English treat these nouns

differently in English sentences.

In American English, collective nouns are singular

so they're treated in the same as other

singular nouns are.

The team has asked for more resources.

The band is really good!

The class is meeting at the library after lunch.

So even though there are many individuals

that make up the class, grammatically, they're treated

as a single thing as one.

In British English, collective nouns can be singular

but they can also be plural nouns as well.

So someone using British English could say

either of these different options.

The class is meeting at the library after lunch.

So referring to the class as a whole.

Or the class are meeting at the library after lunch.

And that refers to

all of the individuals that are part of the class.

The difference is simply about whether the group

is being referred to as a whole, as a single unit,

or as a collection of individuals inside the group .

Then it's treated as plural.

The team has asked for more resources.

So that's the team as one unit.

The team have asked for more resources.

The team as a group of individuals

and the meaning is identical.

The band is really good.

Or the band are too tired!

The individual members of the band are too tired.

While this lesson makes it seem like

there are lots of differences between

American and British English.

They are really only a tiny, tiny percent of English.

With the grammar and prepositions,

the differences are less serious and less obvious

because people will still understand you

The vocabulary and the spelling are the two main areas

that you need to pay attention to.

On the whole, American English and British English

are mostly very similar,

we watch each other's TV shows,

we read each other's books.

We're used to it.

So really,

the two types of English are not so different at all.

February Books Wrap Up | BookTube - Duration: 6:55.

Maybe this will be short for once?

Hello, I'm Rogan and welcome to my February book wrap up.

This month I read 13 books. 8 of those were for a readathon.

The first book I read: A Man Called Ove.

This book gives you the feels. I'm not kidding.

This is about a grumpy old man who lives in the suburbs. This is set in Denmark, I think. Yeah, Denmark.

So he's set in his ways, used to doing everything according to a routine.

Then a young, rambunctious family moves in next door. And they change his life.

For better or worse, who knows?

Seriously, this book is really good. I had a lot of feels on a rollercoaster while I was reading this.

I even teared up at one part, so you know it's good when I tear up.

The next eight books.

They were for the readathon. I will link the wrap up, go watch that. I'm not going to repeat here.

But the majority of these were fantastic.

Next: All American Boys.

This is really touching.

This story follows two boys, one white, one black.

The black boy was beaten by the police severely. Why? He tripped over a lady, and apologized.

He was suspected of trying to rob (the store) and was beaten seriously. He was in the hospital for several days.

The white boy saw this happen. The cop is his best friend's brother, older brother.

So this is the start of his realizing, "Do I keep my head down? Or do I say something, do I do something?"

This is really good. It looks at the black perspective and the white perspective,

and how the white perspective is often problematic.

This is fiction, but it's based on a lot of real-life situations that have happened. So... It's very good.

It was written by two people, one black, one white. So that was interesting to see.

It's worth it. Read this.

Next: Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them - The Original Screenplay.

I enjoyed going back into the world of Fantastic Beasts.

But honestly, if you haven't seen the movie, a lot of this will be hard to picture.

If you've seen the movie, this is (nearly) an exact parallel. You can SEE the movie in your head.

It's not something I'd say, "Oh you must read," because it's, well, a screenplay.

And it's written like one, it's not modified to be like a story.

I enjoyed it only because I've already seen the movie, so I could "re-see" the movie in my head by reading this.

Oh, one little touch I liked is that they added illustrations of the animals.

That was a nice, special addition to it. But otherwise, I wouldn't really say it's a must read.

It depends on your personal preference.

Next: Burial Rites.

This is historical fiction set in Iceland about Agnes Magnúsdóttir,

the last person to be publicly executed in Iceland.

I enjoyed this, I like historical fiction, so. This tells her story, about her crime, what she did.

At first, you see her as awful, a murderer.

It will switch perspectives between Agnes-- Agnes is written in the first person perspective.

While--when you're talking about the priest that talks with Agnes, the family that hosts her while she's waiting

for her execution, etc., is all written in the third person.

That was easy to separate, who, where we are in the story. Also, it will jump back in time.

Agnes' past, stories about her life growing up. It's fascinating.

You learn quite a bit about Iceland, what life was like back then, in the 1800s I believe. Yes, the 1800s.

So if you enjoy historical fiction, this probably will be a good read.

Next and final book I finished this month: Seawomen of Iceland.

This is about real-life seawomen who work on boats, fishing and whatever.

This goes all the way back, as far as possible they could find in records.

I believe the author is American, but she has a lot of friends in Iceland, and she was visiting one day when

she saw a plaque talking about a foreman--the leader of a boat--and it said "she." (The author) went, "Wait, she?"

"Yeah, she's a famous woman foreman in Iceland." Ah, obviously, Iceland is very equal.

So she asked around, and it was odd. Many (Icelanders) said no, there aren't any women working in fishing, none.

Yeah, one, that foreman, but don't really have any others. Hm, that's odd, that can't be.

She did research, then people remembered one here, one there, a few more.

That's strange, Iceland is well-known for gender equality, so why does Iceland say there's no women in fishing,

when there's really many of them. It's the same for modern-day and in history.

She researched and found MANY (women). That's what this book analyzes. It's very interesting.

Again, if you like history, actual history, this is a good read. But if you're not that into history, don't read this.

And just a warning, this is very in-depth, detailed. It will repeat a lot of names, jump around.

It can be a little bit hard to keep track of all the names, but I liked reading this book.

UNTITLED TENDERNESS PROJECT - gay short film - Duration: 14:50.

Name one hero who was happy.

You can't.

- I can't.

- I'll tell you a secret.

I'm going to be the first.

Swear it.

- Why me?

- Because you're the reason.

Swear it.

- I swear it.

- I swear it.

- Oh, sorry.

Hey, come in.

- Thanks.

Wow, it's-

it's really, umm- - It's chaos!

I mean, my room's pretty much always chaos.

- Cool.

- So, uhh, this play.

- Right.

Yes.

- Alright, uhh, who do you want to be...

Boy 1... or Boy 2?

- It doesn't matter.

- Why don't I go with Boy 1, then, which makes me...

David from "Giovanni's Room,"

Dorian Gray,

and Achilles.

Not bad.

- What is it?

- We are very much going to have to kiss.

- I guess we are.

- Swear it.

- And then we hold hands.

For swearing purposes.

- And then.

- I swear it.

- I swear it.

And then...

- And then, the whole kiss thing happens.

- Yeah, the whole kiss thing.

- I'm so sorry.

I literally never forget anything.

- Don't worry about it.

Here.

- Oh.

Cool.

Thank you.

Do you want to go from here?

[inaudible dialogue]

Let us say that together.

- It is too late.

Those words mean nothing to me now.

Wait, was that the entire scene?

- Yeah.

- Awesome! We are gonna kill it.

- I hope so.

- I can't help the way I feel.

- Do you feel?

What do you feel?

- I feel nothing now.

Nothing.

I-

- You okay?

- Yeah.

Yeah,

I'm good.

- You sure?

- It's nothing.

Sorry, it's just-

doing this.

Like, sometimes

I feel like every single character that I play

that isn't straight ends up dead.

Or his boyfriend dies, or his cat runs away,

or I don't know he-

he just sobs.

Like, there's always so much sobbing.

Don't get me wrong I love a good stage cry, but...

Yeah, I don't know.

- Yeah, I- I get it too.

I guess it's just

like playing these parts,

and sobbing, and dying,

and I don't know suffering?

it's just hard not to feel a little...doomed.

- Right.

- And I mean I love "Dorian Gray."

And "Giovanni's Room."

It's just that-

I wish that for once the story could end in something other than heartbreak.

- Yeah.

Yeah.

But we can't exactly re-write the script.

Okay, I think we should try some of it?

- Yeah.

- Okay, uhh, where should we go from?

- Uhh, we can do from there.

- Just the top of the...? - Mmm-hmm.

- Okay.

Okay.

I feel nothing now.

Nothing.

I want to get out of this room.

I want to get away from this terrible scene.

- If I could make you stay, I would.

If I could make you stay,

I would.

One day, perhaps, you will wish I had.

- Come with me.

- What are you saying?

- Come with me.

Out of this room.

Let's go somewhere. Anywhere.

- You are serious?

- Yes.

[applause]

Okay, I think we nailed that performance. - Yeah, yeah. Me too.

Thank you.
