Believe it or not, there was a time when Friends almost wasn't there for you.
Thanks to casting shake-ups, poor test-audience ratings, and flack from NBC, the show was
very close to DOA until a few fortunate coincidences brought the Central Perk Six together at last.
Here's what almost stopped Friends from happening.
The one with the complicated cast
There's no doubt about it that Friends was a success thanks to the comedic chemistry
of its leads, Courteney Cox, David Schwimmer, Jennifer Aniston, Matthew Perry, Lisa Kudrow
and Matt LeBlanc.
But, as with any sitcom, it was a total case of Hollywood revolving doors that these six
ultimately landed their roles.
"I loathe myself"
For starters, co-creators Marta Kauffman and David Crane originally envisioned Janeane
Garofalo in the role of Monica Geller and offered Courteney Cox the part of Rachel Green
instead.
Kauffman told Vanity Fair:
"[The character was] darker and edgier and snarkier, and Courteney brought a whole bunch
of other colors to it."
Cox decided that Monica was the role for her, though, and the producers ultimately caved.
Meanwhile, Matthew Perry was high on the initial list for the role of Chandler Bing, but he'd
already signed up for a sci-fi comedy series called LAX 2194.
"Finally somebody at Fox was like, 'We've seen this.
It's the worst show we've ever seen in our lives.
He is available.
You can hire him for your show called Friends.'"
Imagining anyone else as Chandler is so not cool, but the show would have been completely
different if Jennifer Aniston wasn't Rachel.
The network originally offered the part to actress Jami Gertz, against the producers'
wishes, but she turned it down.
Meanwhile, Aniston was still contractually bound to another un-aired show with CBS called
Muddling Through, so until that series was cancelled, it was uncertain whether she'd
be able to accept the role.
"Oooh, thank God!"
As for the other three, well, the role of Joey Tribbiani wasn't originally written to
be so dense, but when Matt LeBlanc busted his face on a drinking bender the night before
his audition, they figured that he was "good at playing dumb."
And Lisa Kudrow was a no-brainer for the co-creators thanks to her role as Ursula Buffay in Mad
About You.
But she'd had a tough history with director James Burrows — since he'd previously fired
her from the pilot rehearsals for Frasier — and was concerned he might block her from
nabbing the part as a result of the friction.
Last but certainly not least, David Schwimmer was a shoo-in for Ross and wasn't required
to do any auditions or screen tests to land the role, but he didn't want it.
He'd given up on testing for television by then and was focused on starting a theater
company in Chicago.
Ultimately, it was the involvement of director Burrows that drew Schwimmer in.
He told Vanity Fair:
"It was hugely flattering, and I thought, 'Well, it's quite disrespectful with all this
talent asking to meet and just consider it.
I'd be an idiot not to go.'"
The one with the terrible test scores
Much like the love lives underscored in the show's earworm theme song, the test pilot
for Friends didn't go over so well with audiences.
In May, 1994, five months before the show would eventually premiere, the pilot for the
show, which was originally titled Six of One, then Friends Like Us, was screened and given
a "poor" performance rating.
"Ooh she should not be wearing those pants."
"I say push her down the stairs."
Chief among the complaints was the likability of the characters.
Monica was moderately favored by test audiences, but characters like Rachel and Joey were called
unappealing.
The report concluded:
"Most viewers felt the show was not very entertaining, clever, or original."
Following the show's initial notes, NBC suggested that a major change be made to the structure
of the series.
Kauffman told Huffington Post:
"We were told by the network, 'No one's going to watch a show about people in their 20s.'
[They said], 'You have to have an older person.'"
That proposed character would've been a policeman named Pat or "Coffee Joe" who'd sort of supervise
the romantic affairs of the Friends and provide a "mature" voice to their goings on.
Kauffman rejected the idea, however, though she did cave by adding a few parental characters
to the regular mix.
Crane ultimately decided:
"This show was always the six friends, and we were prepared to live or die by that."
In addition to the network's concerns over audience testing, the co-creators also had
to contend with one executive who deeply disliked Monica hooking up with Paul the Wine Guy on
their first date.
In fact, he was so concerned that he'd even handed out a questionnaire to test audiences
which asked if they believed Monica was a, quote, "trollop."
Much to his surprise, though, it wasn't the that romantic dalliance that had the audience
issuing their thumbs down.
Rather, a scene where Ross used his ex-wife's menstrual pads for arch supports in his shoes
was deemed too offensive to make the cut.
The one with that filled space
Despite all these behind-the-scenes difficulties, the real reason Friends made it to air was
simple: NBC needed to fill a blank space on its schedule.
Although network executives strongly disliked Friends — as well as sister debut series
ER — they were waved through for the Thursday night schedule with scant hopes of them becoming
hits.
Little did they know, the series would be an instant sensation, earning both respectable
viewership numbers and the highest ratings of any debut program that year, eventually
becoming a cultural phenomenon that still resonates with audiences to this day.
The show became part of NBC's Thursday night "Must-See TV" and garnered an incredible 52.5
million viewers for its series finale in 2004.
Each of the show's six stars have gone on to enjoy busy careers, and it even made a
cult favorite out of the background actor who played Gunther, James Michael Tyler.
So while the network might have seen the show as a wash when it originally aired, it was
the little entertainment engine that could in the end.

pocket dimension where the thinker has been hiding for such a long time we
already know that Edwin Gauss will have the ability to enter different
dimensions and that's most likely how barry team flash and ralph would go into
his lair but ralph crossing the line to defeat the thinker he's absolutely crazy
because ralph only has ability to shape-shift and base he take any bullets
and stuff so bear in mind the the thinker actually wants his abilities and
wants to kill him in order so he can shape-shift to the original thinker
obviously being Clifford DeVoe obviously Neal son Don's body it's pretty
dangerous for him to even consider crossing on that line so in episode 9
when Barry was stuck in the lair he was stuck in the Vosges ire so this would
not be the first time Barry goes there if in fact he does go there but he knows
how to escape you know the episode 9 was the episode where him and I think a kind
of had a fight and then he got framed for murder
him when he didn't really so now flash has a way to defeat the thinker where he
least knows how to get to the pocky dimension which is very interesting but
how do they defeat the thinker is Harry the key to outsmart him the boring
villain which is called the thinker now people say wast you you're wrong he's
not boring he's clever he's not clever because not really done a thing so
although that berry tard sabotage said the cerebral inhibitor is how they
defeated DeVoe is it really because he never they never said it worked
Joe is concerned by Harry's recent behavior like we said in a theory video

vote he might turn some crazy mad scientists or is Harry even gonna be a
villain because his thinking caps gonna turn into some crazy person or is the

plate-like technology devices but I guess we'll find out in a later episode
so according to a website called spoiler TV Harry and the Harrisons is going to
be a title of episode 21 one of the final episodes of the 23 episodes so
that's assuming this title is right it sounds pretty interesting so you would
suggest that the Council of Wales is going to come back because who better to
help Harrison wells within different versions of mantle so so we have the
doppelganger could return Harry is certainly at a pace and place where he
needs some help and he recently did I create his own signature thinking cap
which helped them affirm the last two metas which is kind of interesting so
maybe the council welcome back so Barry Allen can defeat think of quite easily

it's as if Barry was actually thinking that fast DeVoe wouldn't
to keep up with him but then again I guess you're going to say something like
that so if Barry did this during the first
time it would be pretty cool or they could actually just use the
ability which is the way how iris west got the speed stability in the first
place just have that Metta touch him takes abilities give it to somewhere or
someone else then the worst villain ever is defeat it now I can't understand how
I lost people actually think the villain this season is actually interesting
because to me he's so boring I love the flash but the VIN is so
boring it was better at the start of season when Nils undone it's a different
person each week now des Vosges actually a female well he's not really it is mind

Introduction To Arduino Made Easy - Duration: 14:58.
if you're not a computer programmer or an electronics expert and you want to
light and automate your model railroad then Arduino is the solution for you but
sometimes it could be intimidating if you don't know what you're doing so I'm
going to make a simple solution even simpler I'm Tom Kvichak and this is
Toms Trains and Things welcome to the introduction of Arduino Made Easy I'm
going to show you how you can automate and light your model railroad with
Arduino there are a lot of videos on YouTube about Arduino and about Arduino
with model railroading now I'm going to try to make it as simple as possible for
you if you don't know anything about computer programming and electronics
that's where I come in sometimes when people explain things they assume that
you already know what they're talking about or have a general idea well I
learned the hard way years ago when I had to teach myself computer programming
when I asked for help it was just like everything went over my head because I
was talking to people that knew what they were talking about but didn't
realize that I didn't know what I was talking about and they put it into terms
that I couldn't understand I'm going to be the beginner right here along with you
and going through these projects with you and like always I'm going to put a
link in the description of either the code that I'm using or where you could
find the code that I'm using Arduino has a lot of sample codes that I showed you
in shout out Monday evening in this past week now I'll show it to you again here
and Adafruit has a lot of lessons in there and you could also go on some
other channels Make Adafruit and Sparkfun
where you could learn Arduino and even Raspberry Pi which is a little bit
different subject than Arduino but we may touch into that a little bit later
on I'm gonna put it to you in as simple terms as possible because I don't know
that much I did some computer programming but the way I learned was I
read the books and when I read the books I tried to do it and then worked from
there and that was many many years ago and I forgot just about everything that
I know about it so I'm gonna be starting over with it basically the hardest part
of a sketch is learning the syntax you know what you want to do but how do you
put it into code that is the hardest part that you have to figure out and
that's where we're going to work on on this series about Arduino how we're
going to put our ideas into that code so let's get started with that right after

right now the first thing you're gonna want to do
is get yourself in Arduino Uno version 3 this is what I got it's an older version
this is an SMD version right here you can see the small chip on it usually
there's a long one on there but anyone will do since it's
open-source you can get it from any manufacturer from Arduino itself it's
about twenty-two dollars I bought one recently at Amazon for
about ten dollars and later on we'll talk about the smaller ones that are
about that big the nanos which you can get three for ten dollars or something
like that but anyway get yourself an Arduino Uno that's what
we're going to be working on with our projects on here then go to the Arduino
webpage Arduino dot cc let's get you over there this is what the Arduino
webpage looks like when you get on there for the first time it has a lot of stuff
on there telling you about what you could do and what different boards and
everything else but first thing we want to do is go over to software and
download the IDE Arduino IDE now you could do you could do it on the web with
your browser and I'll show you a little bit later how to do that also but we're
going to download the IDE you could do it with Windows Mac or Linux okay
windows installer for Windows XP end up so it'll work with Windows XP all the
way up to Windows 10 and since I already have it I'll just go over to just
download in our dwee no windows but that's all you have to do it and you
just you know whenever you're finished go down if you're on Windows go down to
the bottom of your page and you could click on the file right down there or go
to wherever you have it in your download but what we're going to show you is what
it looks like and that's the Arduino IDE opening up right now this is a sketch
that I was working on the other day so what we're gonna do is we're gonna go to
our examples basics and I'll show you the blink okay this is the program that
is loaded on to our dwindling it blinks the built in LED which is on
pin 13 I'm going to show you how easy it is to put a program onto the Arduino
board the first time that you're going to use your board on your computer
you're gonna have to go to tools and you're going to have to tell it what
board that you're going to be using now since mine's already on air see it says
Arduino Jennie we know Uno and you're going to have to see a port which is
port com1 on here now if you're on in on a Mac it's gonna you're gonna have a
bunch of different comport on there so you'll have to choose which one it is
but anyway that's what you're going to have to do you're going to have to
select what board you have and what comport before you could upload anything
to that board and what I'm going to do is we're going to hook this board up and
I have my USB cable right here and we'll just plug it right in okay now right now
it's not doing anything you know you just have the power on light and light
number 13 is on well the reason that's on is because of the program that I was
working on that I had on there but let me show you how easy it is to download
it now now you can see over here the right the right pointing arrow I'm going
to click and you're gonna see down here a couple of these LEDs flashing back and
forth first it can pie is compiling it right now and once it finishes compiling
you can see this right here and for some reason it's taken a long
time to compile I mean it's an easy sketch now you can see the lights were
blinking right there and there's this is the onboard pin 13 it's blinking right
there so you can see it's easy as that to upload a program to the Arduino so
let's do something different on there I'm going to change the delay on here
and later on we'll tell you what the delay is and we'll do something else but
I'm just going to show you how easy it is to change something on here on this
first one we'll compile it okay now it's compiled you could see the information
over here and then we'll upload it and you'll see the lights flashing now pin
13 stays on for two seconds and is out for two seconds and that's that's as
easy as it is you could even hook up an LED to pin 13 and to the power either
three point three or five with the resistor in there and it'll do the same
thing it'll light up an LED there also so over here that's how easy it is to
put a program on your Arduino let's take a look at the resources available in the
IDE bring it up over here if you go to file and you'll notice that I pulled up
examples and these are the built in examples and as you can see basic
digital analog communications control sensors displays strings USB starter kit
basic kit Arduino ISP there are a lot of the examples in here
and each one of these examples is let's go to analog serial and every one of
these examples on here is explained on the Arduino website and you can see each
one of them has a sketch where to get it on the website it'll bring up the
website for that and analog in out serial so you can see and it gives you
examples and the code for it also in the examples now I downloaded some let me
get it over here I downloaded some Adafruit circuit
playground commanders DC cpp now this is model railroad related DC cpp DC and DCC
and NMR ADC see now all of these are model railroad related but you could go
on the web anywhere and Google sketches for Arduino and be able to find anything
that you possibly want you could download it to your computer and and
I'll show you a little bit later in the next video how you could put it
into here so you could find it easily though we're just gonna start off with
this showing you how many examples there are in here but preferences usually you
don't have to change anything in preferences and the only thing that I
think I changed on here was the font size for the editor you have a
sketchbook location I just left it to the default which is your user in the
documents Arduino and didn't mess with that all I changed on here was the
editor font so I could see it a little bit better you also have the option of
going online and working on and editor there there and let me show you how to
do that one okay we're back in the Arduino web
agen will go to software and go to online tools and you can see that this
page comes up right here Arduino web editor now there's a lot of different
things that you could click on here and we'll go into that a little bit later
but I'll just show you how you could download the web editor now I had to get
an incognito window to do this but first thing you're gonna have to do is create
an account and once you create an account you know you just do all this
put your username password confirm password and email and you'll come up
with and for me online tools when that happens it comes up with my web editor
but that's how it that's the way it's gonna look and let me show you a few
things on here okay now since I'm already I was already logged into this
and it came up with the last thing that I was working on and I was working on a
project with the servo but let me go back to examples basic blink and here's
the same code that I showed you in the IDE so whether you want to work on the
web browser or in the IDE it doesn't make a difference they both work the
same in the next episode I'm going to show you a little bit more we're gonna
go a little bit further into this but this is just an introduction right here
to Arduino made easy so I hope this is easy enough for you to understand we'll
be taking it step by step so you can understand what's going on with your
