Last year in 2017 we saw a HUGE boom in the gaming market for a new type of virtual experience
–the battle royale.
This fad, if you can even call it that with it's success, is something we have been
meaning to touch on for a while.
But with the advent of the new year, this genre of highly competitive games is raring
to completely take over and become the next big thing in gaming history.
And at the forefront of this new style of game is Fortnite, boasting millions of concurrent
users at any given time with a whopping 45 million players in total.
But is Fortnite just a bloated fad?
Or are we looking at something much bigger than a one pump chump?
So buckle up boys and girls, let's take a glide through the world of Fortnite to understand
just what makes up a Battle Royal and the role it plays in the mindset of champions.
For millennia, the greatest have competed, but only sometimes will champions clash in
the arena of Battle Royale.
To stand against countless others with only yourself as the difference between sweet victory
and bitter defeat is...well it's CRAZY...crazy intense!
And there's something to the experience that can only be understood by delving deep
into the human mind and...the experience of Battle Royale itself.
Behind every genre of virtual experience and competition there is a simple truth waiting
to be achieved, this just happens to be the truth of Fortnite's Battle Royale, the real
truth.
HIT IT!
Hnnnnnnngg
A Battle Royale is a kind of competition, and we all know video games are competitive
for the most part.
Hell, even Animal Crossing (one of the most laid back games ever made) is about bragging
to your friends about how much shit you have, you materialistic...animal people.
Anyway.
To understand the appeal of competitive video games to the collective human mind, let's
look at the different kinds of competitions one can partake in...digitally.
Generally the competition is between you and the computer, or you and another person, or
your group versus another group.
Because of this, when I was a kid, I thought I was super good at video games.
Then the internet happened and I found out I REALLY suck at Super Smash Bros.
But I digress.
In the days of yore, you only had your friends or that dick who hogged mortal combat in the
arcade to test yourself against.
That, or the built in predictable difficulty of single player games.
Or the total RNG of something like Mario Party single player.
SQUEAK YOU DK!
However, now things are different.
My dudes, it's 2018!
If you didn't know that then I'm happy I was here to inform you, but more importantly,
at this point we've had video games for quite some time.
These amazing creations have been around for so long, attractive enthusiasts like myself,
are now able to go back and look at a pretty storied past of success and failure in the
gaming industry.
We've seen a lot of styles of games come and go and even pop back up as big retro fads.
Our mushroom munching maniac Mario is an example of this: a game that took the world by absolute
storm, did precision platforming with tight controls almost perfectly, but was then cast
aside during the 64 bit generations for a long while.
All of a sudden a new 2D Mario hits the WII and BAM baby, 2D Mario is back for another
what?
8 years and counting?
But this video isn't about that drug addict or his shroom diet!
It's 2018 homie!
So now that I've put the Battle Royale into the context of gaming history, let's jump
into what the big ol' BR means exactly and why it's different.
With millions of people playing games online there is an endless sea of players out there
at varying degrees of talent and success, so how do you know where you stand?
How good are you?
If you take Overwatch for example they've added in ranked modes which can allow you
to get all the way to #1 but so much of that is luck, getting paired with players that
are good, or that work with you well, playing the game right so you're able to make it up
in rank, there's a lot of technical mumbo jumbo that goes into making it to the top.
Enter Fortnite, Battle Royale.
A true test of your skill against all others.

Fortnite is a unique shooter because...well...it's not a hitscan game, meaning the gunplay isn't
immediate.
The bullets have to make their way to the other player, it isn't an instantaneous
shot.
Because of this, the aiming is more difficult than other shooters because you have to get
used to HOW the bullets work.
Especially in long range gunplay you have to spot the player
"I see you" And shot not only where they're moving to,
but also account for gravity on the bullet.
Giving a little sweet release on the kill "Boom bitch.
Waddup"
But killing is just part of the game.
Throwing building into the mix gives you intense firefights.
You've always gotta be ready for battle.
And when you're dumped into the large map with randomly placed equipment and weapons
you gotta GET HYPED!
At the beginning of a match you're on a bus floating via the power of helium balloons.
There's only one man who has that kind of technological expertise…
The wasteland of empty towns down below have different amounts of chest spawn locations,
which are crucial for weapons and resource gathering.
I typically try to go to less populated locations (Anarchy Acres is my fav), but Tilted Towers
always has a lot of people and great weapons...if you can survive...
But if you're able to
not die, you're much stronger for it when you make your way out to the rest of the world,
and you encounter more and more people as the storm cloud shrinks around you.
As you run into more players, you have chances to get kills and the little sweet release
to go with 'em.
Okay more than just a little sweet release.
Yeah...that's a little more like it.
It's feelings like this that make the game so competitive.
Competition and knowing where you rank is essential to any competitive game.
Each match in Fortnite is an instant opportunity to prove your skill, but what IS your skill?
You don't have to get the most kills to win a match, you just have to survive.
Maybe you're the sickest shot in the west and that's how you win; but maybe you're
the most patient, or the most cunning.
It's all a way to come out on top.
Having a simple, yet loose definition of winning allows for all kinds of players to have a
chance at sweet sweet victory.
You may not be able to hit the broad side of a barn, but if you can out maneuver or
out think your opponent, or simply out WAIT them, you can have a chance at the top spot
in a match.
Being the best out of a hundred people is a super awesome feeling, and one I've only
reached a time or two, cause you know, I like to let other people win sometimes…
Yeah...that's definitely it.
One interesting thing about a Battle Royale is how many ways there are to reach the end
goal...to WIN!
Simply staying alive is the only true objective, so many different play styles are perfectly
valid and offer opportunities for victory.
At first it seems like 100 people is a staggering amount to best, but when you watch the number
of competitors slowly decrease you start to feel like you suck way less.
Either way, now is the time of Battle Royale, You might just find what you were looking
for in a game all along, and a blossoming community as well, and we're a part of it!
Who knows, maybe you'll end up playing against one of us one day!
When I look at a game like Fortnite, I don't just see a fad that's going to come and
go.
I think we've found a new realm of gaming one that is going to stand the test of time.
It combines so many aspects of other games: RNG items, competitive gameplay, different
levels of weapon rarity, stealth, strategy, shooting, building, co-op, there's literally
something in there for everyone.
Hell I even saw Dan Harmon talking about Fortnite on Twitter just the other day so maybe you'll
get to play against him!
However unlikely that is.
But before that, let's get to the juicy, nuggety center of why this video exists at
all.
The Coup de grâce that ties together the journey towards becoming the very best that
no one ever was...at Fortnight.
You think I just scream things into a microphone for nothing?
NO!
You're here for a reason and so am I!
The meaty, philosophical reality punch that is THE TRUTH...of why we like to win.
Think of life as a battle royale...sometimes you team up with others towards your goal
but ultimately only one can reign victorious so your teamwork ends with guns pointed at
each other and didlydeath for all but the one who kills best.
I mean it's not a perfect analogy for life but you get the idea: somehow being successful
in a silly, epic competition thingy plays on that same feeling from being successful
in life.
That's the main reason why winning a game feels...worthwhile!
Like you just had fun doing whatever life threw at you and KILLED IT!
YOU FOOKIN KILLED IT DUDE GOOD WORK!
That's why games are fun...but let's go even deeper.
THIS IS A TREESICLE VIDEO.
YOU THINK I'M JUST GONNA STOP IN THE SHALLOW END WITH ALL THE TODDLERS PISSING THEMSELVES?
No!
We're going to answer One.
Step.
Deeper.
The question of...why does winning..succeeding feel good...in life?
Such an opposite feeling than too much time of doing nothing.
Doing nothing is fun for a while but eventually I get tired lounging in my pajama bottoms,
eating goldfish, and...dicking around on the internet sometimes with my dick not out.
Competition itself, is ingrained in the fabric of life.
Everything from the grass on your front lawn to the goldfish in your aquarium is a part
of the ongoing battle for survival, and that's what it really comes down to, survival.
Trees have to get sunlight so they grow as tall as they can, but in a heavily forested
area you may note that there's little life on the forest floor because the trees won
and nothing else can grow.
Taking it back home to the human experience, because we're such a versatile species,
what with our big fat meaty….
Brains, we have turned competition from a survival instinct into a game.
That game is called society.
We may not be warring over who gets the most deer from the forest anymore, but we are warring
over who gets the money to buy the deer from the person who had the money to buy the land
that the deer is on which was leased to the people who hunted the deer and sold it to
the purveyor from which you bought that deer.
Really, all money is for is to try and keep people from killing each other.
It's a fabricated form of credit, you work to earn it, and your work enables other people
to spend their money.
However, it's still competition.
Some people are born with a head start, wealthy families, big families with lots of connections,
but some people are born with a shit hand, no money, stripped through college, scraping
by their whole life.
You can't escape competition.
You can't escape the battle for survival because in reality, there simply isn't enough to satisfy
everyone (especially with the population we have now, holy cow when did that happen???).
But regardless of what you were born into the idea of Fortnite mirrors life PERFECTLY,
and it's what makes the battle royale games so ethereal.
You really never know what you're going to get, what you're going to be placed into.
It truly mirrors some of the randomness of existence and the struggle that we call life.
There WILL be times when the second you land you get shot in the face and it's simply done,
but there are other times where you may find yourself in a goldmine of shields, ammo, and
sweet ass guns.
But no matter what you are dealt you have to fight, and sometimes you'll get far only
to be shot down in your prime, but then sometimes you win.
In life there is only one victory, survival until the end.
Making it out where you want to be when the lights turn out for good.
To be frank, not all of us will experience that.
Some of us will come close, and some of us won't even get a chance.
But some of us WILL win, and a battle royale simulation lets you live that out as many
times as you want.
The uncertainty of beginning, the panic of midlife, the threat of failure but the light
at the end of the tunnel that is victory.
So hang on tight folks, Battle Royal isn't going anywhere.
We've uncovered the newest genre of Gaming, one that has all the opportunity in the world
