Welcome to the Kammebornia podcast, about life in general and knitting in particular
In the Kammebornia podcast we want to invite you to our world
that is full of thoughts, feelings and discussions
caused through the scent of the coffee and the soft peaceful rhythm of the knitting
Kammebornia is our art project as well as our own kingdom
Kammebornia is about our wish that everyone could live in their own fairytale kingdom in this place we call reality
and it is about our wish that everyone could be the king or the queen in their own life
We are Dennis and Pia and we live on Gotland, the island of roses and fairytales in the Baltic sea
We wish for a softer, more kind and warm world
Love and respect, does it have to be so hard?
Without the woolen threads, I get lost
but if I can knit one more row and one more, I can find my way home again
Through the magic of the threads I take my way through the days and the nights
With a rhythm like the waves and the heart beating,
I knit one stitch after the other and one row after the other
at the same time I collect my thoughts and feelings
A warm welcome to the second episode of the Kammebornia podcast in 2018!
Today, we will show you Dennis' and Ellas new sweaters
We will be talking about a trinity in knitting and in food
We will give you a book recommendation and I will show you my new knitting bag
And we are talking about that it might be our imperfections that makes us perfect
Welcome!
My grandparents have been very important for me my whole life
My grandfather died 20 years ago
I lay next to him and I sang and hugged him over to the other side
My first born baby was also in my arms
My grandmother died 8-9 yaers ago, just when I met Dennis
They had never the time to meet but I know she would love him
My grandmother was born in 1917 and she was a seamstress
She sewed all the dresses, skirts and coats I wanted
and I always loved to be in her studio, knitting or sewing on my own litte project
or helping her to sew in buttons, iron or overlocking
and picking up needles from the floor with a big magnet
There was always a lovely scent of newly baked bread and cakes from my grandmother's kitchen
Now I use her recipes as well as her sewing tools
Her thimble is always close to me in my little box filled with important stuff I need every day
and I keep my haberdashery in her old sewing box that also serves as a stool
My grandmother's sponge cake has a scent of cosiness and it tastes happiness
like it always felt in her house when I was dancing in front of the mirror and
my grandfather said I was beautiful and my grandmother said I was her heart of gold
and we had sponge cake in the evening when we knitted together watching television
Hello!
Please taste my cake!
it's my grandmother's recipe
and my grandmother's cake tin
it's the best
This cake is so associated to my memories of my grandmother
she was always baking a lot of good stuff
Do you remember certain things that your mother or grandmother used to bake?
Yes, kanelbullar, what's that in English?
Cinnamon buns
That's what my mother baked all the time
Always!?
Yes, we ate them all up, immediately, we were three brothers and a sister
So they disappeared before they had cooled?
Yes. This is such a tasty cake! You should try this!
I can taste your crumbs!
There is a piece for you
Thank you, I will have that later
It is such a high quality of life to have coffee and cake together, don't you think?
Yes, it's the most important thing!
or having a meal together
we have always had a high priority in having dinner together
we were never good at driving the children to activites when they were younger, because we were having dinner
it felt more important to us
all those meetings and stuff we had to turn down or ignore - to get time together at the dinner table
we were so busy having a good time with the children around the dinner table
but we did not force them
No! I think if you ask our children, they will tell you they loved and treasured those moments
Yes, I am sure
I have heard them talk about that
I think it has always been an important moment, through history of time, to share a meal
Food is a primary need, like sleep
I has not always been easy to find food for everyone
Yes, isn't it a lovely thing to know that you have food to put on the table?
and to be able to sit together with the people you love and share a meal
it is not the same to eat all alone
We are so lucky to have each other!
Anyway, there are some things that are important when having a good meal
It has to be beautiful, it's always important, if you are alone at your table as well as if you are together with others
Yes, and you need time
It's like a respectful ceremony
I think you shall enjoy your meals and set the table beautifully
You always read something before we eat, or before we are allowed to eat
I like to have the feeling of that we are gathering around the table and that we can take a deep breath
to collect our thoughts and enable us to be present in this moment
like, here we are and we are going to enjoy and appreciate this together with gratefulness
I think it has a lot to do with being grateful
And yes, I read a verse, a prayer before we eat, that our children learned in their Waldorf school
It is beautiful
yes, it is very beautiful but I have troubles remembering
In the sunlight ripens what the earth us brings
Just as aour growing souls ripens, in the divine light
Blessings on this meal
Then you have time to feel awe
it's a good thing
There is a fantastic thing about to happen, we are going to share a meal of tasty food!
So, I like to say something but of course that can be different things and verses and so on, maybe you just say Bon Appetit!
I am thinking of my mother. It seemed like she was always cooking, working in the kitchen
Then we came, three hungry boys and all the food disappeared in a second
Then we ran away and she had to do the washing up
I can relate to that feeling
But my memories are light and happy
We were also helping out sometimes and it was an important moment of the day, every day
If we were out playing, she rang in a cowbell when it was time to come and eat
We have that bell here, in the hallway
I often think about the long talks and discussions we had around the table with our children
It was about space, about books they had read, movies we wanted to watch, things that happened in school
World politics, life values
I think we were building our lives together during those conversations
Yes, it is such an important time
We always sat for such a long time and sometimes you had to say - Please leave, I have to do the washing up now!
No one wanted to leave the table
Yes, there were no order
Then we tried to have different days for the children to help out with the washing up
It was hard to have good rules around that
It was not so much fun
Sometimes it was successful but mostly not
But it is things that has to get done
You often say that you enjoy doing those chores, it makes you feel grateful for what you have
If you are not too stressed about other things you have to do
I am grateful for every day that I can have dinner
and do the washing up afterwards
It is nice things
It is a lot of snow outside today!
It is supposed to be spring soon
And it is getting darker, the sun is setting
Yes, but you have finished your Riddati!
And now we are going to show you some more of the things we have knitted
That's fun!
Ella and Dennis have both finished their Riddari's
It feels amazing that they both started to knit about a year ago
Ella has already finished a couple of sweaters. The latest one is Chuck in 3-ply wool from Ullcentrum.
I am almost finished with my Wiola cardigan
And I have knitted an Aftur for the knitalong I am hosting together with Järbo garn this spring
I have also knitted 2 pairs of mittens in my new pattern Roses are red, Violets are blue
These are knitted in Rauma finull fron YlloTyll.
Nice sweaters if I may say so myself!
Yes, really, I am so proud of you!
How does it feel, walking around in a sweater you have knitted all by yourself?
It is still a bit unreal
I learned so much during this process and I needed a lot of help
But I feels much better now when I have knitted for a while, I understand more of what I am actually doing
I want to understand but I think its hard with the mathematics
But it is more fun the more I learn
I enjoyed knitting it
What do you think about it?
It is gorgeous! And now you are working on a...
Yes, I have misplaced or lost my favorite hat, so I am making a new one
I think everyone that follows us knows that I have a hard time feeling comfortable in a hat
My favorite hat is called Barley hat from Tincan knits
Anyway, it's gone, so I am making a new one
How is that, to make another one just the same but now you are more used to knitting?
Now I understand what I am doing!
In the beginning I did not know what I was doing and you yelled at me, no, no, not like that
No, just kidding, you did not yell, both you and Ella helped me a lot
But now I understand so much more and that is a good feeling
It looks so good and even
So I am knitting this hat and at the same time I am planning for my next project
Do you know what it will be?
I think I will make a shawl
So you have decided now?
Exciting! But do you know which one?
No, we can look that up tonight
I made you a shawl a couple of years ago, that you have used a lot
Yes, the green one, I love it, but it needs to be mended
I can do that!
Thank you, that is good!
I am working on my Wiola cardigan
It is almost finished now, all the pieces are put together, I have decided what to do about about the sleeve issue
I am keeping my error
Thank you so much for all your support and advice concerning this matter!
I our latest episode I wanted to share my errors on on of my sleeves
I wanted to show you that I am not perfect. Sometimes we think that we are the only ones making errors
frogging and unravelling
One of my sleeves is right and the other one is wrong according to the pattern
I have thought a lot about it but I have decided to let it be
I wanted to keep the crooked one, I too feel crooked sometimes, I can relate to it in some way
We all have scars here and there, both visible and unvisible
I wanted to hold on to the thoughts about that the imperfections make us perfect
Maybe the imperfections heal us
And it is important to show this, show ourselves vulnerable
And I think it is beautiful the way it is. If I did not think it looked beautiful, I would have done something about it
but in that case, I gues I would have recognized the error earlier on
But I think you have problems with it anyway, doesn't it bother you?
No, it doesn't anymore. It did, when I found out I had made a mistake, but now I am cool about it
And I am knitting another one
Well done by you!
Thank you!
Ok, we have to continue this today, because what you just saw was yesterday for us
We did not have time to wrap everything up yesterday because it got dark and we had some technique problems
But it is also very light - because there is so much snow here!
It's all white outside and it's snowing all the time
So let's continue
I am knitting on my Wiola cardigan
and I am also knitting Aftur for the knitalong I am hosting together with Järbo garn
But I am also working on some smaller projects
Last time I showed you my new mitten pattern, Roses are red, Violets are blue
Honey is sweet and so are you
Thank you!
This pair that I showed you the last time, are knitted in Ullcentrum, 2-ply
Ullcentrum are selling yarn kits for my mittens!
That's nice!
I have also knitted two pairs in Rauma finull from YlloTyll
A grey pair and a blue pair
It's a great yarn for mittens
I have also made one mitten in a retro green springish colour with pink roses, also in Rauma finull
I like them!
Then I have knitted another mitten!
It's a pattern by Wenche Roald, called Kristin's Lyre flowers
This mitten...
...you loved to knit
Yes, it was pure joy to knit it!
I ahve only made one so far and the thumb is not knitted yet but anyway, I love it
I am a big fan of Wenche's patterns
It's a lovely mitten
We are going to Edinburgh and Blacker Yarns are hosting a knitalong using their yarn
We are so happy to be invited to the podcaster's lounge at the Edinburgh Yarn Festival
The Podcaster's lounge is sponsored by Blacker Yarns and that's why they are now hosting this knitalong
You can knit whatever you want as long as you are using a yarn from Blacker Yarns
I was so excited to try their yarns because I have not had the opportunity before
I have knitted these mittens in the Shetland yarn from Blacker yarns and I absolutely love it!
I fell in love with this yarn!
Yes, you were completely gone, knitting that mitten, talking about the loveliness
Yes, and at the same time I tried my new dpn's Chiao Goo needlesthat I bought from Moods of Colors
She sells Chiao Goo needles now in her webshop
So this is a set with sock needles, or mitten needles
I hope these won't break like most of my sock needles do
I like trying different needles and even the karbonz needles, that are supposed to be so strong, break...
They are supposed to be so strong and the same material is used in spaceships and cars and other tough things
I have good hope in these!
And I like knitting with them
This project was a match made in heaven, great pattern, lovely yarn and fantastic needles, everything was right
And you were right!
And you were right! That's sweet of you! Thank you!
The company and the moment was also right
We were watching Shetland, the tv-series
Very suitable as I was knitting with Blacker Yarns' Shetland yarn
So I was thinking about this thing we often talk about concering a meal
The experience of a meal is like a trinity
It is not only important what food is being served, there are more components than the food to a meal
How you perceive a meal is dependent on several things, three things mostly
First there is the food
Then there is the company and also the enviroment or the situation
Yes, and the company and the enviroment is as important as the food
it's like a trinity
Good food does not taste good in a bad company
Sometimes you can not choose your company or enviroment or even your food
Of course, but these are good things to consider if you are planning a fantastic meal
You need all the components
While knitting this mitten I could relate to that, all the components were right for me
and that is why it was such a great experience
You can have a lovely yarn but using a bad pattern and then the yarn is not as lovely to work with as if you have a great pattern
Good pattern, good needles and a good yarn makes a great combination
That's what I was reflecting on while knitting this mitten!
It should be like that all the time
I am making another one because I want to wear them in Edinburgh
I think there will be a meet up, at the festival, for everyone that has knitted something in yarn from Blacker Yarns
That must be fun!
I also have this lovely yarn, Jacob, from Blacker Yarns but I have not had time to try it yet
I have not decided what to knit yet
Very nice anyway
Now I want to show something else!
What?
This lovely knitting bag!
This bag is called the Rittenhouse tote and it is soon to be launched by Fairmountbag.co
@fairmountbagco is a US based couple, named Katelyn and Christopher
I have the honour of being a test pilot of this bag
You can check them out at fairmountbag.co and also support them on Kickstarter
It's made from waxed canvas and it is great in so many ways
We are going to show you a clip of me and this bag
This bag is big enough to contain my knitting projects as well as other stuff I need to bring when I leave home
There are several slots and pockets for needles, your phone and other things you need to store in the bag
There is also a reinforced scissor sheath and other great details
And this great thing I always need to measure my needles
Waxed canvas makes the bag both good looking and durable.
There is also a removable pattern holder and I love that my bag is brown but it will also be available in other colour ways
You can find Fairmount Bag Co both on Instagram and on ther homepage
I like the fact that I can carry this bag in so many diffrent ways
And I like the magnetic closures that are invisible but works fine and keeps my yarn safe
I say wow! about this bag!
As you can see, it is a fantastic bag
I am honored to have been a test pilot of such a great bag!
I will use this bag for a very long time
It's excellent quality
I really like this waxed canvas
Maybe I have to hold on tight to it
Yes, I would also like one
We can use it together and take turns
Yesterday you asked me how many bags a woman can have
Yes and you answered -As many as she needs!
Yes, that's true, I need different bags for different things
But this is a very good and useful bag!
Check out fairmountbag.co
Books
First things out are my patterns but I am not sure if I shall show them as it is not so easy yet for me to sell them
I have printed Roses are red, Catch a Falling Star and Wisby mittens, all in Swedish
You can find them at yllotyll.com, at Garncentrum Rättvik and at Henriettas garn in Karlskrona
And Ullcentum sells Roses are red and also yarn kits.
For now, they are only available in Swedish and I have plans for a webshop in the future where I can sell them in both English and Swedish
I am so glad that they turned out so fine, I have a graphic designer and artist helping me designing my patterns
So, this is the first step towards our webshop where we can sell patterns, yarnkits and other great things
Yes, a small shop!
It would be nice!
Then we have a book we want to recommend!
Book, magazine, whatever we shall call it
a great publication
It is called Woods
Woods is made by Hanna Lisa and Verena
we have followed them on Instagram through the process
You can find them on Instagram as @_makingstories
This is a tribute to wool and to soulful stash, to nature itself
it is nature friendly, good yarns and great patterns
locally produced yarns
It is also a tribute to knitters and to creativity
and to pattern makers
It is a very beautiful book with lots of inspiration
We can read about how wool for a long time in many places, not has been appreciated or wanted
It is still this way in many places. Here on Gotland and in the rest of Sweden for example, a lot of wool is being destroyed
it is what happens when there are no one to take care of it
it is sad
But Woods is a part in re-establishing the importance of wool and the process of making it into yarn that can be clothes for example
and in this publication there are a lot of great patterns and beautiful pictures
Like for example this yoke sweater by Jennifer Steingass
She creates so many wonderful yokes and this is really lovely
We can highly recommend Woods in case you have not bought it yet
I think Ella is going to make the Jennifer Steingass sweater
Yes, I think so too. And there are so many other lovely patterns.
It's beautiful
And a nice read
I also like the size and the whole feeling of it
So this is our recommendation today!
Do you want to go out and play in the snow or what are we going to do now?
But we might not be able to get out. One of the doors is frozen and totally stuck.
But I think we will manage, we have what we need at home
I want to send warm greetings to Ally!
