One of our key legacy pieces as we sail around the world is we have the
opportunity to provide a grant to a local organization that promotes social
health through education and conservation and our grantee recipient
here in New Zealand is Orca Research Trust.
The Orca Research Trust specializes in believe it or not Orca!
What we're looking at generally is how many there are, where they're going, what they're
feeding on, and how they're living their lives.
Come on board guys! So I was thinking what we'd do is go down the estuary and have a look at how the
watershed comes into the Hauraki Gulf and then goes out into the Pacific Ocean.
The 11th Hour Racing grant is an amazing opportunity for the Orca
Research Trust to be able to continue on the work that we do with advocacy and
also protecting the orca. They asked me if I had any ideas on a recipient and
New Zealand then it was then that I remembered that I had seen a show about
five years earlier with Ingrid and her work with the Orca Research Trust.
The other thing that I want to be able to look at is the continued monitoring of what's
going on in the marine environment in terms of these toxic chemicals.
A lot of people don't realize that the Orca come right into estuaries like this all
around the New Zealand coastline the rays are all in here which is why the orca come in.
So today I was really lucky to be able to take the Vestas 11th Hour Racing team
with me in the boat and go down the estuary so you can see in
here guys you've got all the mangroves coming down to the water and of course
any chemicals that are going in to the farm area are also coming down here.
One of the grave concerns that I have is that from my research we found that Orca
have the highest levels of toxins in their body for any animal that's ever
been studied in the Southern Hemisphere. I think that we need to be very, very
careful about what we are doing as individuals, what we're doing as a
community, and what we're doing as a country - and then of course that's going
to have spin off globally.
I think the Volvo Ocean Race platform is an amazing opportunity for people to learn about the marine environment.
It's doing basically this amazing combination of passion for sport with passion for the environment.
