John 4:43-48, Does Religion Guarantee Insight? - Duration: 8:52.
Religion is important but, does religion guarantee insight into who Jesus is?
In this video, we will explore this, first, by conversationally reading the John 4:43-48
and then by briefly touching on 2 nuances that I heard that have helped this passage
come alive to me.
Buckle up, here we go.
My name is Charles Yerkes, and this is the Simple Not Shallow YouTube Channel.
The whole purpose of this channel is to help you relate to the Bible by helping it come alive
to you; one reading at a time.
If you like what you hear, please click that like and subscribe button and then make sure
to tag that little grey bell icon that pops up and tell YouTube that you want to be notified each time a new video
is posted.
So, is religion a guarantee of insight into who Jesus is?
Let's begin by reading John 4:43-48 from the World English Bible.
After the two days he went out from there and went into Galilee.
For Jesus himself testified that a prophet has no honor in his own country.
So when he came into Galilee, the Galileans received him, having seen all the things that
he did in Jerusalem at the feast, for they also were at the feast.
Jesus came therefore again to Cana of Galilee, where he made the water into wine.
There was a certain nobleman whose son was sick at Capernaum.
When he heard that Jesus had come out of Judea into Galilee, he went to him, and begged him
that he would come down and heal his son, for he was at the point of death.
Jesus therefore said to him, "Unless you see signs and wonders, you will in no way believe."
So, it would seem that the answer is no, religion does not guarantee insight into who Jesus
is.
Keep watching as I briefly share 2 nuances that serve as the basis for this answer.
The first nuance I hear comes from verses 43 and 44.
Here He is coming from Samaria and returning to the land of the Jews, the land of the those,
who in verse 22 Jesus has said, worships that which they know.
I'll link to the video dealing with verse 22 below in the description box.
And in that video, the Samaritans came to Jesus seeking the Messiah and they believed
in him based on who they found him to be not on any miracles he performed.
And here, in verses 43 and 44, he enters Galilee while telling his disciples that he will not
be as honored as he was in Samaria.
He would not be as accepted for who he is.
Isn't it both sad and ironic that the Samaritans, those "Who worshiped what they did not know,"
came to know Jesus quicker than those who did?
Than those who knew the properly religious things to do?
Nuance number 2. This comes from the word 'So' in verse 45, "So when he came into Galilee."
The word translated as So is literally the word 'Therefore.'
Meaning, this passage could be read as, "Therefore, when he arrived… the folks welcomed him
because of all the signs….
They were welcoming the possibility of seeing more signs and wonders, not himself.
They did not care to get to know him; they just wanted a miracle, a thrill, and a hand out.
And, therefore, no one asked him to stay with them, as had the Samaritans.
And in verse 46 it says, he therefore came again to Cana.
And therefore, in Cana, a certain nobleman came wanting yet another sign, a wonder,
a mere miracle.
See, they all came seeking signs, miracles, and not the Messiah.
The Samaritans sought the Messiah, but the ones who knew what they worshiped, who had
the correct religion, could not see who the signs were pointing to, the religiously correct
had no insight into who Jesus was.
And therein lies the danger for those who focus intently on the miraculous, the signs, blessings, the prosperity,
or on even spiritual gifts.
They can become so transfixed on seeing the neat, the cool, and the beneficial things that Jesus
can do that they do not look past them to see Jesus himself.
They get lost in a religious world and miss out on knowing the one to whom the religion
points.
This makes verse 48 even more poignant.
"Unless you see signs and wonders, you will in no way believe."
It's like he is saying, "Is this really all you want, just another miracle?
I have so much more to give.
I have living water to give you and all you want are these trinkets."
How incredibly sad that religious people can get so excited about having all their wants
fulfilled that they never gain insight into the deep and everlasting love of God that
always serves others….
And the gifts Jesus give are excellent gifts. Please understand,
this is not about the gifts, or the signs, or even the asking for gifts.
It's about where a person has his focus; on the gift or on the giver.
Next time, we will see the amazingly personal story of that nobleman from Capernaum
the one found in verses 49-54.
We will see that it is Jesus' personal touch that is needed to give insight to the religious,
even as he had done to the Samaritans in verses 1-42.
Well, what do you think?
Do you find it intriguing that the Bible shares that it was the unreligious of the day that
came to know Jesus first and that the religious were somewhat blinded by their religion; merely
wanting handouts when Jesus wanted to give them… so much more?
Do you think this happens today?
Do we allow being blessed, living in blessing, and even having certain spiritual gifts get
in the way of knowing Jesus?
Please tell me what you think in the comments section below.

meaning dwell.
