Hey good to see you
Nice to see you again.
We're gonna talk about railways today.
It's James.
Hey how are you?
This is a nice place.
We are close to Saigon Pearl over there.
and this is coffee Bos...How do you say this?
Bosgaurus
I live exactly in this place over there.
It was very nice but If you think about it, you cannot really exit it.
And Saigon Pearl is blocking the view.
Well they say in real estate
that a view is a privilege or the right.
That does make sense.
Exactly!
Cool! Let's get a coffee, talk about railways.
Actually, it's the Saigon Subway.
Really excited we're about to do this.
This is legit. I've never seen this place.
2 cups of hot latte coffee
Ok
So this is it?
Yes! This is the proposed map of the Saigon Metro.
OK. First , how do you get to have the map in the first place?
This is on my website.
If you click the link underneath this, then you can have a look.
There have been a few maps already made
that you can find on wikipedia.
I've taken all those maps
and basically found all the information from the building authority side
and made it what it's meant to look like.
Ok so you took the maps that were already there.
Yes!
Put them all together into this.
Yes!
So, ok! When do you think this is gonna be built like that?
Well, so...On this map
the only thing that is actually there at the moment is
this black dotted line
which represents the overland line that goes from Saigon to Hanoi
That's the railway, right?
That's the railway.
So I just put it there for reference
even though it's not used for commuting lines
'Cause you can't stop anywhere.
At the moment, this red line is the only one that is under construction.
so that was, I mean it's been proposed to be built for last 10 years
Every year they say "Oh it's gonna be ready in 2 years."
So for the last 4 years, I have been saying it'd be ready in 2 years.
Right now, it's 2018 and they are saying 2020 is gonna be the day.
I would probably say 2022.
They are building it.
If you go down to Ben Thanh market in the central of Saigon,
there's like 30 cranes there all working all thru the day.
You know, it's happening.
As for the rest, like the last news report I saw
maybe 3 years ago, they said ok, we want this done by 2030.
Line 2 which was going to go from Ben Thanh out to...here is like
They said they had an official ceremony to start the construction.
maybe 4 years ago and then they just stopped.
And then they seemed to realize that
there was a problem with the design.
And now they said they're not gonna start until 2020.
With all of these sort of delays, you know, it's not gonna happen yet.
How do you think this is planned at all? Does it make sense to you?
Oh it makes sense.
I mean, at the moment, when metro starts
it usually just starts from the cross
so the 1st line is not gonna make sense at the start
so the first line is only ever gonna serve whoever's on it
it's always gonna be the tough call, but...
the journey of a fully functioning metro system
begins with the first line
and then you just keep adding lines to it.
Maybe the first 3 or 4 lines still don't make sense
but then you add a 5th line
and all the sudden it's interconnected with
all the other ones and it becomes like a system
and it's really useful.
And then more people use it and then you need more lines.
Yea absolutely! We all want it to become like
Shanghai or Singapore where these lines are everywhere.
But they all started with one and they weren't useful
they were only useful for those people on line 1.
So you've got the start, so in 30 years time,
there is a backbone, where you can keep building more lines.
Yeah, that makes sense.
When we drive out to Thao Dien in District 2 in general
Like this. This line.
And to me, it looks like along the line
there are always these new high rises
It looks like they are building them according to the line.
Yes.
that might bring up the naughty thought that
you'd do this in order to raise the prices for the real estate
not for all around.
Absolutely, well it's sort of intertwined, like everywhere you look
there's gonna to be a development on this line
so it's just the matter of
there are obviously people who probably have inside information
who might be buy up in advance.
Oh. Maybe even if you just look at this
you know that there is gonna be a metro coming
So speculated, so well, I'll just buy this block
maybe in 20 years time, there'll be a metro here.
Same along here, this is line 2
If it gets done, this goes down CTH, it's like a very busy road.
This's Ben Thanh market, ok?
It goes to… should this be District 4 or district 10?
No, this is like district 10. This is the old train station.
There's a big development happening here, there's the Viettel tower
There's a big development in district 10 happening
All along here, you would expect a tower,
towering apartment along there as well.
Fair enough, people want to live by metro.
So if you want to invest, just go to these points.
Sure.
And just put them
How long do you want to wait?
Like this line 5 is connected to line 1.
They raised money for a few years ago.
They said okay, it's gonna happen.
Then same again it sort of stopped
So, they might have been speculating
buy something here
and then they're still waiting for it.
If you look at it like this, if this would be on the other side,
it would look like Berlin actually. Same design.
The airport here.
This should be actually one of the first ones to be built right?
You'd think. I think they originally...
I found a kind of articles
when they first start talking about building the metro.
The first line was gonna be from the airport
and then they said "Well, you know what?"
"We're gonna be building a new airport. It's gonna be open soon"
So let's not worry about it.
And then of course, the new airport hasn't even begun to be built yet.
Do you know where it should be?
Yea. It's in Long Thanh, which is…
Is it like this area?
Yes. It's gonna be out here.
It makes sense too. It's like a branch here.
Yes. They have a, like a proposed line
which I'll add on the next map
which goes around the other side of the city
and it'll go to Vung Tau.
That'll be nice
Yea. Maybe you could then connect to a train here at the airport
It goes down to Vung Tau.
We could finally go surfing in Vung Tau.
There you go. Yes. With a train and not one of those psycho vans
That'll be nice!
You just did this because you like that
and you thought it was necessary.
Why dont they have that?
Yea. well, I think they will have it.
But this is not even built yet.
Maybe it's like the last thing they'll be thinking of
So like I said, there're like 2, I'm saying 2 maps online
which you can find on the wiki page.
and I'll just, you know, have designers who would like
to take this into the right hands.
I write about railways in South East Asia
and I have a lot of data about different railways
so it just seems like that the Internet made it this
Fair enough
I have a travel blog called nomadictnotes
That's one of my blogs that have several traveling websites.
Super popular.
It's ok.
And in the last 6, or 7 years, I've been based in SEA
and I've taken an interest in a lot of
infrastructure programs have happened for years
so it's a very exciting region to live in and visit
because it started from so far back in some cities
and it's like a really interesting thing happening.
I like following what's happening here
and seeing the city is transforming to modern metropolises
I started to be in Saigon 4 years ago.
You came here probably 10 or 15 years?
No. First visit is 12 years ago like backpacking
then I came just before you till I based myself here.
I remember when I was here in 2005.
the roads were much dustier
there was no McDonald's or Starbucks here
What interesting thing to see you is 2 things
Very mundane things.
One is the price of a normal coffee
I'd say like cappuccino, maybe also "cà phê sữa đá"
And the other thing is the level of English that people speak.
I feel like both are leveling up every year
Yea. Especially in the urban areas, in the SEA generally
I thought people speak far more English than, maybe, the East Asia
Thank you so much James.
Ok
Alright guys. That was James Clark from nomadictnotes.com
What do you think about this railway here?
Just write it down in English or Vietnamese
I'm gonna respond myself.
And If you like it, share with your friends and subscribe.
See you in the next videos, guys. Bye Bye.
