Three, two , one.
What's up everybody, Dustin
And Akina
Here from DuoTravelBlog.
Right about now we're in downtown Kyoto and we're about to give you the top tips of traveling
in Kyoto.
It's actually her ideas not mine.
But anyway, let's do this thing!
Alright, first tip is that compared to Tokyo, things close a lot earlier in Kyoto.
Yeah, be careful about that.
I mean, basically if you're in the peripheral [non-central] areas, like the temple zones,
like Gion, some places will close even when the sun's going down.
And then maybe some restaurants will close at like 6pm, 7pm. 8pm tops.
But the closer you go to Kyoto station, things are open later.
But they're still not open quite as late as they would be in Tokyo.
Yeah, we almost missed our dinner last night.
We did.
Granted, we did go to eat dinner at 11:30 at night but...
But things would be open in Tokyo.
Yeah things in Tokyo... if you're in Shinjuku, you can get food or drinks basically at any
time.
Yeah, in the middle of the night like 2am, 3am.
Yeah.
But here you can't do it.
You know you gotta actually plan out your meals like a normal human being.
So what's the next tip?
The next tip is you should walk around at night in Kyoto.
Probably in the Gion district.
This is our favorite, right?
Yeah, it's amazing.
Basically, when you're walking around during the day there's tons of crazy tourists crawling
around like wild animals.
But if you go at night in Gion, there's like almost nobody at all and it's really beautiful
and peaceful.
I mean, like we said before, you do have to eat before you go there because most of the
restaurants are closed.
But if you go there at like 7pm and just walk around, it's really cool.
And what did you say about the temples?
Temples are open in the night sometimes if you're lucky.
And that's really beautiful.
Yeah, so you have to go to the tourist information center and ask them if there are any temples
open at night at the time of year that you're in Kyoto.
It's such a shame that we're missing it by one week!
Yeah, one weekend from now there are two really awesome temples that will be open.
And we're missing it, but we had seen one about a year and a half ago and that was really
cool.
That was one of the coolest things I saw in Japan actually.
So if you can see one, go for it, baby.
Alright, what's the next tip, baby?
Stay near Kyoto Station.
Yeah, you should stay near Kyoto Station because you want some train access.
There are plenty of buses and trains in Kyoto, but the buses can be really jammed with tourists.
Especially if you're in Gion and you're trying to leave at 5 or 6pm.
There's tons of tourists from America, Europe, and China, just waiting in a huge line.
You can't be waiting in a line like that.
You gotta keep things classy in life.
And sometimes you might not be able to get on a bus because it's too crowded and some
people just can't fit in.
Yeah, when we were here a year and a half ago, we went on a bus ... it was like the
sardine express, baby! [there is an phrase in English "packed like sardines", since sardines
in a tin are packed to the max]
There were way too many people on that freakin bus, man.
But yeah, stay in an AirBNB close to Kyoto Station.
You're worth it, I'm worth it.
Basically the whole world is worth it, okay?
Time for the next tip.
I'm getting a little bit confused or distracted because someone walked by with their pet rabbit.
But this actually is kind of contrary to the previous tip.
My first time coming to Kyoto, I actually stayed in a hostel.
And I rented a bicycle from the hostel.
It was pretty cheap.
It actually gave me a lot of freedom.
So if the weather's nice, and if you're an active person, go by bicycle.
I was able to travel to a lot of different places that are not easy to get to.
I went to some places that were loaded with tourists like the Golden Temple.
But I also went to these somewhat spiritual Zen gardens that didn't have many people.
I went to some temples that didn't have any people at all actually.
I kind of liked those bicycles.
What the heck are you doing??
[BABY Akina is playing with her hair and being silly, distracting me]
So if you want an alternative to staying in the city center, get yourself a bicycle, baby!
And it's easy to get around with a map in Kyoto.
So I would recommend it too.
Yep!
So, what's the next tip?
The tip is about where to eat at night in Kyoto.
We got this place behind us here.
What's the name of that district?
It's called Pontocho.
Yes.
Yeah, why is it good, boss?
It's really nice in the night.
Like, it's really Kyoto-ish.
Right?
Like something you would imagine from Kyoto.
But the point is, like, there are lots of tourists in the night as well.
And if you go to a restaurant with an English menu outside of the restaurant, there might
be 90% tourists.
Not even Japanese.
Yes.
So, you should actually go to a restaurant that doesn't have any English outside of the
restaurant.
It might seem a bit daunting if you can't speak Japanese.
But most of the restaurants here do have an English menu.
We went to a place 2 nights ago ... it was really good!
Life-changing actually.
And we're probably going to go there again tonight.
Just going inside ... I mean they didn't have any menu outside in English.
But we went inside, and they actually did have one.
So it was quiet in there.
Yeah, and it's really close to the river.
The River Kamogawa.
So if the weather is nice, then pick up some beer from a convenience store and have a walk
by the river.
Yeah, after going to the restaurant definitely check out the riverside ...
And I personally feel an inner sense of peace right now ... just sitting by this restaurant
... sorry by this river.
And I also feel an inner sense of joy!
Joy!
Anyway, what did you
think about those tips everybody?
Because personally, I think they were pretty nice.
And legit.
Legit ... too legit to quit.
[means really legit ... "too legit to quit" is a lyric from an old rap song]
So by the way, if you want some more specific recommendations about restaurants and sweet
shops, I got those down below in the description box.
Or if you want to see some more life-enhancing pictures, check out Akina's Instagram.
I got that down below as well.
And as always, thanks for watching this video, why don't you leave a comment, let us know
what you think.
