Waching daily Mar 26 2018

Hey it's David from TUNG Brush I'm here with Tom and we have just spent a couple

of days at Menfluential 2018 in Atlanta, Georgia

Good stuff. Bunch of men trying to be better men. I'll tell you what we met some

fantastic people, we saw some amazing products, I lost my voice - We've got stuff to

show

OK the first thing we're gonna tell you about are the shoes. I got a pair -- you

got a pair too -- from Paul Evans / Paul Evans New York. Picking up these shoes

They're amazing! This is a chukka boot -- you got one too -- Mine are kind of a burgundy-

-ish brown like a really nice reddish brown and yours are

they're like oxblood but they're - I don't know they're almost black but here's the

deal: He wore his. I haven't worn mine.

Oh man when you smell these you know it's the real deal. This is Italiano, right here

Really good quality leather - excellent. I know I just braved a lot by smelling mine but you

know what? They still smell like new leather, so that's good. Really well made

and they look good I'm getting compliments all over town, like, "Hey man, I like your

shoes!" Very classy. Very classy good stuff.

So one of the companies we

met was called Chassis: Man Care for Down There. Yep this is not old school.

I hadn't heard of this before but here's what it is. There's a powder, OK what do you have?

We've got a shower primer, and that gets everything started. It's for

down there... so you know... down there. This is uh this is the powder which i

think is kind of the primary thing, like you're supposed to wear this and it's

gonna like -- it's like a finisher. Stay cool and dry. Exactly. And it's going to make you smell pretty

good is this scented? They had like an

unscented... This is not your grandfather's Oldsmobile. This is extreme cream which I

read it prevents chafing. I haven't tried any of this stuff yet, but we're going to. I'm

kinda looking forward to it yeah.

So one of the speakers at Meninfluential hit a

topic that's near dear to my heart. Ryan Michler. He's written a book:

Sovereignty. This is a book that -- if you're a male -- you need own. We got to get

our "male" back. Now we're not talking about machismo, we're just talking about

being gents. We're talking about the masculine male and

really the characteristics that we should be displaying as men. That women want

us to display as men. We need to get it back. This book will tell you how.

One of the

highlights of the event for me was meeting Men's Finest. These are some fantastic

folks: Michael is the designer. MensFinest .co.uk. I got a box of goodies

I upped my pocket square game. Check this out

Lots of colors. I don't even know really quite yet how I'm going to use

this. I think you can fold it different ways and show off the different colors.

That's gonna be fun! I got my first ever bow-tie - it's in two

pieces, so I'm gonna be watching Men's Finest's YouTube channel to figure out how

to tie this, thankfully. It's got like some clips in the back so once I get it

tied I guess I couldn't leave it tied. That's pretty cool. And then I got some

socks. Now I I'm like a black sock kind of a guy -- brown sock kind of a guy -- so I've upped

my sock game quite a bit. We'll see how that turns out.

You know every now and

then you just run across a product and you say, "Oh I gotta have one of those!"

This is one of those: Anson Belt and Buckle. Now this is their koozie. The

reason we don't have a belt is because they just -- they couldn't keep up with it

last year. So you gotta go to their website buy a belt. It's a track belt.

It is the coolest thing you've ever seen. When you see it, when you touch it, you're

gonna go, "Gotta have one." And then you'll have 2. Because you'll want 2.

OK we met some really

creative people and you would be amazed at what some people can do on a YouTube

channel. Jeremy Fragrance is a guy that I met

He's got a YouTube channel -- all he does is focus on smells! So as far as I'm

aware YouTube hasn't figured out a way to transmit smells through the through

the medium, but he's got a whole channel where he will explore everything to do

with smell and I'll tell you what he made me smell amazing at the event!

So guys and gals you know there's always something around the house that we need

to figure out how to get done. You don't want to hire somebody, because

we think -- especially us guys -- we think we can do it ourselves.

Here's where you need to go: a buddy of mine, DIY Pete. Don't forget it

DIY Pete. He's a buddy of mine -- we both live in Bozeman, Montana. That's why we're at

Menfluential! Go to his channel. You want to learn how to do anything

Pete'll show you how to do it. That's the place to go.

So there's so much more we

could talk about with this event. It was outstanding. But there's one thing you

should know: Menfluential 2019 is gonna open for

registration soon. Absolutely and I gotta tell you another thing: ladies, you're

looking for us guys to up our game, and we need to up our game -- you're

absolutely correct. So look for guys who have either been there and if they

haven't been, send them here! These are guys really making an effort to up their

game as men -- across the board, no matter what the topic is. It's excellent stuff. I

mean, everything from hair styling (which I really learned a lot about) As

you saw: fragrance, shoes, style, dress -- How about courage? Courage, professionalism

-- absolutely -- you know, just being a better you. Being a leader. Yeah! So if you're a man

and you feel like you could use some some help in one of those areas or more

or all of them Menfluential 2019: You gonna want to be there. Encouragement -- there's another

one. These guys -- you show up here, they will be by your side, and so you're not

flying alone on this one. I've been to a lot of events over the years: business

events, marketing events, you name it. I've never seen an event with a culture like

this one: welcoming, supportive, encouraging, informative

people teach you stuff you don't know -- yeah it doesn't matter what you do:show

up. You gotta show up. We'll hope to see you at Menfluential 2019.

This Is Where You Can Find All Of The MCU's Infinity Stones - Duration: 7:48.

The entire Marvel Cinematic Universe has pretty much been built around the Infinity Stones.

Often called "Infinity Gems" in the comics, these mystic superpowered baubles have shown

up in almost every Marvel Cinematic Universe film to date — and it's all been leading

to Infinity War.

These powerful little rocks have the power to completely destroy the entire Marvel Cinematic

Universe, and Marvel fans have seen big bad Thanos plotting to get his hands on them since

the first Avengers film.

Everything climaxes in Avengers: Infinity War, when he shows up to just take them all

for himself, as the comics predicted.

But where exactly are the Infinity Stones in the MCU?

We've encountered most of them already, and it isn't hard to surmise where in the Marvel

Universe the rest might be scattered.

Here's the full rundown of where we can find all of the MCU's Infinity Stones leading up

to Avengers: Infinity War.

The Mind Stone

Loki used the Mind Stone in his scepter to great effect in The Avengers, brainwashing

folks to do his bidding along the way.

Earth's Mightiest Heroes spent the early part of Avengers: Age of Ultron tracking it down

from HYDRA's control.

Ultron stole it, embedded it in his potential new body, but his plans went south when that

body was stolen by the good guys.

Finally, team Stark tapped into its power to activate the powerful new hero Vision to

help defeat Ultron.

"It's the Mind Stone.

It's one of the six Infinity Stones.

The greatest powers in the universe unparalleled in its destructive capabilities."

One side effect of that creation process?

The Mind Stone is stuck in Vision's forehead.

It's what gives him his immense power, and there's no way to get it out without something

really, really bad happening.

When last we left Vision at the end of 2016's Captain America: Civil War, he was serving

on the "official" Avengers squad under the leadership of Iron Man.

It stands to reason this will be one of the easiest Stones for Thanos to find once he

lands in the middle of New York City, since it'll be attached to a fist that will be punching

him in the head.

If you need more than that, footage from the film's first trailer shows one of Thanos'

minions making a move to pluck it out of Vision's skull.

No word on exactly what that will mean for Vision, but it's probably not good news.

The Space Stone

The Space Stone has been kicking around the MCU since Captain America: The First Avenger,

when it was being called the Tesseract, and has been used by both the Red Skull and Loki

in their attempts at world domination.

S.H.I.E.L.D. also held it for a while to try and mine its capabilities for super-weapons.

After Thor, Iron Man and the gang defeated Loki in The Avengers, the Tesseract was shipped

back to Asgard for safekeeping inside Odin's vault, which housed all kinds of powerful,

but possibly inauthentic, goodies.

"That's not bad."

That was the last place this particular Infinity Stone was seen, and even though Asgard was

destroyed down to its foundations during Thor: Ragnarok, it stands to reason it survived.

Best guess?

Loki was the last person in the vault, so he almost certainly grabbed it before sparking

the match to burn Asgard to the ground on Thor's order.

The first trailer for Infinity War offers its own clues, showing Loki holding the Tesseract

up for someone — so if nothing else, we know he ends up with it somehow.

The Time Stone

The Time Stone was first introduced to the MCU in Doctor Strange as the Eye of Agamotto,

discovered among the artifacts being held by the Masters of the Mystic Arts.

Strange uses it to create a time loop to save the world from the reality-devouring Dormammu,

outsmarting one of the Marvel Universe's most dangerous entities.

But the stone itself isn't without its dangers.

"Temporal manipulations can create branches in time.

Unstable dimensional openings, spatial paradoxes, time loops!"

Despite the fact that he saved the world, Strange is still learning the ropes when it

comes to the mystic arts, so the Time Stone was put back in the hands of the Masters of

the Mystic Arts and is likely being stored at Kamar-Taj in Kathmandu, Nepal.

When Thanos inevitably attacks, it would make sense for him to either come after the Stone.

Perhaps Doctor Strange will arm up with the Eye as he heads into battle with the Mad Titan.

Regardless, like the Mind Stone, that Infinity Stone is already on Earth and should make

for an easy target for Thanos.

The Reality Stone

The chain of custody on the Reality Stone is a bit harder to track than the rest of

the MCU's Infinity Stones.

First introduced in Thor: The Dark World as the extremely powerful Aether sought after

by Malekith, the Reality Stone was eventually recovered by Thor by the end of the film once

the Dark Elves were vanquished.

After that, the pmid-credits scene in The Dark World revealed the Asgardians decided

to hand the Stone off to the Collector for safekeeping, because of the dangers of keeping

two stones in the same place.

"One down, five to go."

The Collector's home on Knowhere was eventually destroyed in Guardians of the Galaxy, though

it stands to reason he dug the Reality Stone out of the rubble and is still in possession

of it at this point.

That's assuming he hasn't simply sold it off to Thanos in the meantime, of course.

The Power Stone

Most Marvel movies revolve around powerful MacGuffins, but few are as powerful as the

mysterious orb everyone is fighting over in the first Guardians of the Galaxy.

That world-destroying orb is the Power Stone, which Peter Quill tracks down on a planet

during the film's opening scenes.

Ronan the Accuser later attempts to use it to wipe Xandar off the map.

Quill eventually reacquires it, and holds hands with the rest of his team, and uses

its power to take out Ronan once and for all.

Once the battle was won, Quill handed the Power Stone over to the Nova Corps for safekeeping

on Xandar.

Presuming it hasn't wandered off to another spot in the MCU, it Thanos will probably have

to wage war against the entire intergalactic police force to get his hands on this particular

Infinity Stone.

The Soul Stone

The first few phases of the Marvel Cinematic Universe have done most of the heavy lifting

introducing the majority of the Infinity Stones, but one mystery remains: The Soul Stone.

The mysterious final stone has yet to be formally introduced in the MCU — though there are

a few theories.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 has already planted the seed for Adam Warlock's introduction,

and the Soul Stone is intimately connected to his origin story in the comics.

So if Marvel wanted to bring that character into the fold ahead of Guardians Volume 3,

it'd make for a convenient outlet.

The most likely option, though, seems to be Black Panther.

The land of Wakanda is the most technologically advanced on the planet, and is an extremely

spiritual place, to the point we see Black Panther actually travel to the spirit realm

to confer with his late father.

Looking to the footage we've seen of Infinity War, Wakanda seems to factor in heavily — to

the point we see a full Wakandan army charging into battle.

Could Wakanda be in possession of the final Infinity Stone, and that charge is the nation's

battle to keep it from falling into Thanos' hands?

It'd make a lot of sense, and give Black Panther real stakes in Thanos' assault.

The Gauntlet

All of the MCU's Infinity Stones have to fit together somehow, and that's where the Infinity

Gauntlet comes in.

It's designed to hold them all and give the wearer practically godlike powers, and Thanos

has a leg up on the competition: The post-credits scene of Avengers: Age of Ultron showed Thanos

wearing the Stone-less gauntlet; he only needs to gather the Stones when Infinity War rolls

around.

As keen-eyed fans are likely also aware, the Infinity Gauntlet was previously shown all

the way back in 2011's Thor, when it was featured in the background of Odin's vault.

It created a continuity problem once things started barreling toward an eventual war with

Thanos, so Thor: Ragnarok cleverly retconned that Gauntlet.

"Odin's treasures."

"FAKE.

Most of the stuff in here is fake."

It made for a fun joke, but also cleaned up a messy plot thread that had been left dangling

since 2011.

Infinity Stones assembled

Promo art, action figures, and early footage from Avengers: Infinity War shows Thanos in

possession of all the Infinity Stones in the MCU, which doesn't bode well for Earth's Mightiest

Heroes.

If the MCU Gauntlet has a power set similar to the one in the comics, all the heroes in

the MCU will have their hands full stopping Thanos.

It allows the wearer to manipulate time and change the past, manipulate space and matter,

and basically rewrite reality itself on a whim.

The comics version of the gauntlet, when fully powered, can also give the wearer godlike

omnipotence.

Which means Thanos is about to make the Avengers and their friends' lives very, very difficult.

"Ready?"

"Let's go."

Hey guys for Complex News, I'm Natasha Martinez.

//// Rich the Kid released the full version of his Lil Uzi Vert diss track on Monday.

The track "Dead Friends" premiered on Zane Lowe's Beats 1 Show which also featured an

interview with Rich about the story behind this World Is Yours cut.

Lowe asked Rich to clarify what he's saying on the track to which he replied,

"Just letting people know how money changes people."

Lowe went right ahead and pointed out the obvious Uzi references, specifically what's

gone down on social media.

Rich said,

It's funny because I made this record months before all that, and so whatever darkness

comes to light.

So you listen to the song, you know what's going on.

Billboard don't lie.

Lowe pointed out that both Rich and Uzi are succeeding and asked if the disses are pure

entertainment.

Rich came back with he's waiting on Uzi to respond but he knows Uzi can't write better

than him.

Lowe added that both of them are fundamentally different artists.

Last week it was reported that visuals for "Dead Friends" directed by Louie Knows is

expected shortly.

Apparently Rich's team hired an Uzi lookalike for the shoot.

Trump RUINS Meghan's Big Day, Queen Sends Invites & IGNORES Princess Wishes - Duration: 5:46.

Trump RUINS Meghan's Big Day, Queen Sends Invites & IGNORES Princess Wishes.

Meghan Markle is in meltdown mode after learning that Queen Elizabeth sent out the official

royal wedding invitations and totally ignored her wishes.

President Donald Trump is laughing as the word spreads about who received the gold embossed

invites, and it seems that he has ruined Markle's big day.

The Queen's rank gave her the final say, and royal insiders are reporting that Princess

Pushy is having a tantrum, screaming that the Queen dismissed her "special request."

Meghan Markle is reeling as she realizes that the Queen made adjustments to her celebrity-studded

list for wedding invitations and also decided who would walk Princess Pushy down the aisle.

Markle planned to have her mom Doria Ragland give her away, along with her dream of a who's

who list of Hollywood "A-listers" being invited, including Barack and Michelle Obama.

Well, the Obamas didn't get a gold embossed invite, and Princess Pushy is having a meltdown.

She loved rubbing elbows with the former president and former first lady and had them on top

of her list.

Little did she know her list was trashed.

This is a royal wedding, and the Queen adheres to a set of protocols determining who will

be invited.

Since this royal wedding is not an official state event for the Queen, politicians outside

the United Kingdom aren't included.

But, President Trump was the major factor in the decision to not invite the Obamas.

The Sun reports, "[G]overnment mandarins had pleaded with the couple to change their

minds [about inviting the Obamas] as Britain's relations with Trump's White House sunk

to their lowest ebb since his election last year."

They add, "It won't be a state occasion.

If Mr. Obama was invited, the invitation could look like a snub to Mr. Trump, and His Royal

Highness would not wish to cause a diplomatic row."

The Queen's final decision was hers alone, and she simply doesn't like the Obamas.

Barack arrogantly gave the Queen as a gift an iPod of his speeches in 2011.

This is not exactly the type of official state gift from one nation to another.

But then again, Obama did piss off the Queen when he removed Winston Churchill's bust

from the Oval Office, which was a gift from the United Kingdom.

The former president also screwed up, bloviating at a state dinner as the song "God Save

The Queen" was playing.

He finally shuts his trap as he looks around and everyone else is standing at attention.

Then, there was Michelle "hugging" the Queen, which turned out to be a faux pas.

The Obamas refused to read or didn't care about the "royal protocols" in place when

you interact with the monarch.

We may think that they are archaic protocols, but it's not our country.

Heads of state like the Obamas should have represented America better.

This brings us to the other big shocker to Princess Pushy.

She's having a tantrum, according to royal insiders, as the Queen made a point of inviting

Meghan's father.

Meghan had told friends that she only wanted her mother invited, indicating it would be

her mom walking her down the aisle.

US Weekly reported back in January, "The Suits actress, 36, is breaking tradition and

wants her mom to walk her down the aisle instead of her father, Thomas Markle."

"With the wedding, they [Meghan and Harry] both want to do things their way.

While they will always be mindful of traditions and the views of their elders, the day is

ultimately about them and what they want to do," said the source close to Meghan.

The invitations were sent out last week with Meghan's father receiving one, so it's

safe to say the Queen wasn't amused with bucking the tradition that the bride is given

away by her father or a male family member.

The ancient tradition stems from the authority a father has to give his blessing that his

daughter will now be formally in her husband's family.

It's why women take the last name of their husbands, but in modern times not everyone

adheres to old traditions.

However, this is a royal wedding, and the Queen isn't playing Princess Pushy's games.

So, Thomas Markle is invited and is confirmed to be walking her down the aisle, something

he did not do in her first marriage.

Page Six reports, "There were rumors 73-year-old Thomas Markle Sr. would be blanked after Meghan

decided against asking half-brother Thomas Jr. and half-sister Samantha."

A family friend told The Sun on Sunday, "Thomas Sr. is overjoyed to be beside his little girl

on the day she becomes a princess — even if he has to battle his demons to get there."

The report adds, "He's not exactly thrilled at facing the world's glare.

He lives a reclusive life in Mexico."

From reports of Meghan's early life, her father's Hollywood lighting job afforded

her the luxury of attending the exclusive Immaculate Heart High School in Los Angeles

and introduced her into her career as an actress.

Although she isn't getting her way, it's something she better get used to as she no

longer can do whatever she wants.

The royal couple will honeymoon in Namibia, a place Harry loves for it's hunting.

The only problem is Princess Pushy has forbid him doing any hunting, so it will be interesting

to see how the big romantic honeymoon goes.

I'm sure Prince Harry and Princess Pushy will be in the headlines, despite the Queen

hating all the gossip and controversy this relationship has brought her so far.

God Save The Queen.

Intro to History of Science: Crash Course History of Science #1 - Duration: 12:20.

Hello, and welcome to our new series—Crash Course: History of Science.

My name is Hank Green, and I've wanted to produce this course for years.

I'm obsessed with how people throughout the ages have uncovered truths about the universe

and converted these into a wealth of technological wonders.

This process has decreased the suffering of millions of humans—even as it's sparked

entirely new problems.

Regardless of the outcomes of scientific inquiry, the process itself is fascinating.

The world you inhabit today is full of gadgets that once belonged to science fiction.

We can model what the earth looked like millions of years ago, or zoom in and observe the atoms

that make up our own bodies.

We are going to tell that inspiring story: we'll be thinking about thinking with Aristotle,

digging canals in Song Dynasty China,

listening to robot musicians in medieval Turkey,

fighting an electrical war in New York City,

and discovering the shape of DNA in Cold War England.

But the history of science is not only a story of humanity's collective movement from ignorance

to knowledge, for two different reasons.

First, as much as scientists today may not like to admit it, we are still pretty ignorant…

And we don't agree on what it would mean to reach the ultimate Truth, capital T.

Take a big question that we've been asking for a long time like "what is stuff":

While modern physicists will tell you that

stuff is made of atoms, and atoms are made of quarks and leptons, we still don't know

why quarks exist.

Or why there appears to be far more matter in the universe than we can account for.

Even something as basic as "stuff" needs a lot more sciencing!

Second, and more importantly for historians, "science" isn't a stable or single idea.

That's why, in this episode, we're going to be thinking about some ways to answer a deceptively

simple question:

what is the history of science the history of?

[intro music plays]

Today, "science" can mean both our body of knowledge about the world as well as the

methods we use to create that knowledge, or how we know the stuff that we know.

Within that "how," there are two main practices—things that we do—that systematically

generate knowledge:

One: observe some specific aspect of the world.

For example, Darwin spent decades obsessively observing the subtle variations in different

kinds of barnacles, orchids, turtles, birds, and other living things.

This led him to theorize how they had changed over time.

My dude loved barnacles!

Two: conduct an experiment to answer some question about the world.

Did Galileo drop two metal balls of different masses from the Leaning Tower of Pisa, to

show that they fall at the same rate and disprove Aristotle's theory of gravity?

Probably not.

But Dutch thinkers Simon Stevin and Jan Cornets de Groot did conduct that experiment soon after.

Today, we have much bigger "towers" for testing theories in physics: the Large Hadron

Collider is seventeen miles long!

Finally, when I said systematically, I meant that there are rules about observing or experimenting—rules

that anyone can follow.

That notion of anyone being able to be a scientist is super important.

In fact, a lot of contemporary scientists have three Latin words tattooed on their arms:

"NULLIUS IN VERBA"—"on no one's word…"

Let's explore this phrase because it's important.

In this series, The Thoughtbubble is going to bring to life different wonders from the

history of science.

Today, our wonder is pretty abstract: the wonder of the reproducible experiment.

"NULLIUS IN VERBA" is the motto of the Royal Society.

This group of knowledge-makers was founded in 1660 as a "College for the Promoting

of Physico-Mathematical Experimental Learning" and re-founded in 1663 as "the Royal Society

of London for the Improvement of Natural Knowledge."

And it's still around today!

The Society was started as a place to debate new ideas about nature.

Its members demonstrated experiments in front of each other—"witnessing" the proofs

behind their theories.

They wrote up these theories in the Society's Philosophical Transactions, one of the world's

oldest peer-reviewed scientific journals.

Influenced by Francis Bacon's ideas, which would eventually become associated with the

"scientific method," the founding members of the Royal Society chose a motto with an

unambiguous meaning:

don't believe something just because someone tells you it's true.

Test out each new hypothesis, or educated guess, yourself.

In other words: your individual proof of how some natural phenomenon works should be something

that anyone can reproduce.

This idea had an enormous impact on the history of science.

Later members of the Royal Society included stars such as Ike Newton, Ben Franklin, Mike

Faraday, Chuck Darwin, and even Big Al Einstein, who was about as British as sauerkraut.

In fact—plot twist!—the early scientists who adopted the creed "NULLIUS IN VERBA"

were not actually "scientists."

They were well-off alchemists and medical doctors,

and they called themselves Natural Philosophers.

Or, "People who loved truths concerning the world around them."

Natural philosophy in seventeenth-century England was sort of like the contemporary

natural sciences mashed up with medicine, mathematics, some philosophy–philosophy,

and a whiff of religion.

The word "scientist" was only coined recently, in historical terms, in the 1830s, and caught

on around 1840.

It was made up by an English scientist named William Whewell who was also a historian of

science and a priest.

So if we only cared about the history of people called "scientists," our job would be

easy: there aren't any until around 1840!

And most people called scientists, or natural philosophers, looked suspiciously similar

to one another.

Take the Royal Society: its members have been, until recently, almost exclusively rich English

men.

Even though their ranks have included many incredibly clever scientists, they haven't

represented anything like all knowledge makers.

The sixty-second President of the Royal Society, biophysicist Venkatraman Ramakrishnan, is

the group's first non-white leader.

And there has never been a female President.

But the history of systematically knowing stuff goes back much further than the Royal

Society and includes more types of people than English blokes.

Thus "science" is a historical and social concept—not one that's existed forever,

in the same way for all people.

Because the history of science includes many systems of understanding the world, we have

to consider these systems on their own terms.

It may seem simpler to focus on the "winners" of history.

But hearing only the big Euroamerican names—Plato, Einstein—doesn't teach us as much about

our global system of science today.

Taking the time to highlight different knowledge worlds will help us see our own as relatively

recent, not entirely unified, and evolving.

For example, we'll learn about the Greco-Latin-Jewish-Arabic medicine of the medieval Mediterranean world,

millennia of ayurvedic knowledge across the

Subcontinent, traditional Chinese medicine, and Incan "talking knots" and engineering—just

to name a few.

Each of these systems has its own social norms about what count as valid ways to make and

share knowledge.

We'll look at modern scientific norms in a later episode.

And each of these can help us see the "otherness" of these past or different cultures as not

so other, after all.

We can see natural philosophers and other proto-scientists as smart people making sense

of their world, not as "bad" scientists.

They understood the world around them in the smartest way they could.

For example, according to medieval Mediterranean medicine, the organ in my head was for venting

waste heat, not thinking.

People in the past weren't stupid: they knew that if your head was chopped off, that

was curtains for you.

They just weren't sure what all this weird gray stuff did.

Even today—though we can see a neuron fire in high-resolution—we struggle to understand

what really goes on when it fires, that is, the role a single neuron plays in thinking…

much less answer the question, what is consciousness.

The history of science really gets even juicier when incremental, nagging questions about

the natural world add up and cause a scientific discipline, or an entire society, to change

in a "revolutionary" way.

Later in the series, we'll look at moments of revolution within the sciences alongside

philosophers such as Thomas Kuhn and Michel Foucault, who... did not always agree.

They show that science isn't only historical and social, but constructs entire worlds of

knowledge in which we all find ourselves trapped.

But don't worry about that just yet.

By learning the history of science, we will automatically start to think about our own

knowledge world as historical—not finished, not capital-E enlightened.

Around the world, humans are still actively working to understand our universe… but

they don't all agree on how to do it.

We may be able to make more accurate models of natural phenomena… but we may never find

the ultimate answers we seek.

At its limit, the history of science touches on the study of religion: the diverse and

changing nature of the never-ending human search for Truth, capital T.

Our path through past knowledge worlds is going to be a beautiful and powerful one.

There are many, many marvelous insights to celebrate.

To help us keep our footing as we jump across centuries and continents, we're going to

keep our eyes on five big questions.

Questions that, to this day, we do not have complete answers to.

First: what is stuff?

From atoms to dark matter to spacetime: what are things made of?

"Things," by the way, includes air, fire, and outer space:

if you think I'm going to sit here and not celebrate the death of phlogiston with you,

you're sorely mistaken!

Number two: what is Life?

What's the simplest way to define living things?

Are viruses alive?

Is the earth alive?

Where did life come from?

Where did current organisms come from?

How do we understand their interactions with each other and their world?

Three: where are we?

What is this place, the earth?

What is its place in the cosmos?

Is this the only universe?

Four: when are we?

More questions of scale: how long have we been around?

What about living things?

What about the whole universe?

What came before that?

And five: how can we agree on what we know?

And how can I convince more people that the stuff I know is accurate?

For example, how can I show anti-vaccers that vaccines are necessary!?

Regarding technology, how should we talk about what to do what our knowledge?

All of these questions have been considered by people as far back as records exist.

They also remain active areas of study today.

But the last theme is so important that it gets its the final section.

Humans have always tried to describe the world, for lots of reasons: in part because it's

fascinating ("magnets—how do they work!?"), and in part to control it.

Knowledge, as they told us in grade school, really is power!

The power that knowing stuff gives the knower is exactly why we should study the history

of science.

Thus one goal of this course is to highlight how the values (beliefs about right and wrong) and ethics (acceptable behaviors)

of scientists and engineers shape our world.

And how, conversely, sciences and technologies are shaped by the societies that produce them.

We have a responsibility as citizens to understand

and to act accordingly.

Our world today looks radically dissimilar to that of three hundred years ago.

To quote Andy Weir, we've "scienced" the heck out of it.

We learned about stuff, made new technologies, and are currently scrambling to learn new

stuff to solve the problems that our old technologies created.

Facing an utterly unprecedented total ecological catastrophe, we may need to "science"

it even more, in one way or another.

We'll talk more about this in future episodes.

Learning the history of science can help shine a light on this dark future.

Next time—pack your spanakopita: we're heading to ancient Greece to invent natural

philosophy with the Presocratics.
