Waching daily Mar 27 2018

"First off, I want to know how you guys identify yourselves."

"How do you identify?"

"Depends if we're at TSA or not."

Hi, I'm Yara.

In episode 1 of this series, I explored a slice of Iran in Los Angeles, also known as "Tehrangeles."

But now, I want to see how young Iranian-Americans are breaking down the stereotypes and assumptions

a lot of other people might have about us.

There's a certain stereotype about Iranian-Americans, especially those in Los Angeles.

"White BMW."

That they're rich, shallow and made for reality TV.

"Ohhhhh, like a Persian."

But I personally don't relate to those depictions at all.

I'm definitely not flashy. I mean, I wear the same pair of black pants every single day.

But I do change my socks.

And many young Iranian-Americans don't relate to these stereotypes, either.

Like Alex Shams, who grew up in L.A.

He showed me a side of the Iranian-American community here that you don't see on TV.

And, surprise, he doesn't have any gold chains or drive a white BMW.

"We are in downtown Los Angeles, in the jewelry district.

So there's a lot of gold shops everywhere around us, and jewelry shops of all kinds,

with a lot of Iranians working around here."

Alex showed me how Tehrangeles extends far beyond its symbolic center in Westwood,

and into downtown L.A.'s jewelry and garment districts.

"Many Iranian merchants here, in the valley and many other places, they end up learning Spanish

because most of their clients, for example, are Spanish-speaking."

"Oh my god."

"I just want to hear a mixture of both:

"I found two Iranians who speak Spanish!"

"What do people misunderstand about the Iranian community in L.A.?"

"I think there's a certain image that many people outside of Los Angeles have of Iranians,

particularly because of shows like Shahs of Sunset which show this kind of really particular Westwood,

rich Beverly Hills, L.A. Iranian that I think is definitely a part of the community,

it's definitely a part of what's happening, but it's so much more diverse than that.

Both in terms of the neighborhoods that Iranians live in across the city,

and the kinds of jobs they're doing, the kind of lifestyles they have, socio-economically."

Alex is right. There are wealthy and working-class Iranians. Secular and religious Iranians.

Muslim, Christian, Jewish, Zoroastrian and Baha'i Iranians.

Just about every kind of Iranian you can think of lives in L.A.

Including some incredible artists and musicians.

"Sometimes I'll hear a melody, and it'll be a melody that needs voice,

but it won't sound good in English. So it needs to have Farsi words on it.

Because the Persian language is so sweet and melodic."

This is Chloe Pourmorady. She's an Iranian-American Jewish musician who's never been to Iran,

but she's fully in touch with her Iranian – or Persian – identity.

"I feel so, so blessed to have been brought up here, because I think this is the closest place

outside of Iran that you can get to Iran.

If you want to really immerse yourself in Persian culture, you can do that very easily in Los Angeles.

People call me American, but it's still something in my heart that doesn't resonate so much.

I feel in my heart the Persian is first."

"Does your Jewish faith incorporate itself into your music?"

"Spiritually it does. I sometimes use text from the Torah.

Very beautiful, very poetic texts, much like you would find in poetry of Rumi or Hafez or something like this."

Chloe's music is unlike anything I've ever heard.

It's part Persian, Jewish, Turkish, Greek and Balkan.

"I remember I had a composition professor. He found out I was both Iranian and Jewish, he was very startled.

He said, 'You're Jewish? I thought you were Iranian,' not thinking that it's possible to be both. Which it totally is."

The Iranian Jewish community is a huge part of the Tehrangeles story.

They've opened restaurants,

…supermarkets...

…and even pharmacies. And that's just a small taste of how they've shaped L.A.

It was obvious to me the "Shahs of Sunset" stereotype is really blown out of proportion.

But there's also another stereotype that young Iranian-Americans also have to grapple with.

That of the dangerous, scary Middle Easterner.

[screaming]

"Our biggest threat is now Iran."

To talk about this, I caught up with Justin and Fatemeh Mashouf, an Iranian-American couple

who are also practicing Muslims.

"Oh yeah, by the way, so Justin breakdances."

Justin is half-Iranian, and in 2007 he traveled to Iran to make a documentary about breakdancing.

It was his way of trying to bridge the gap between Iran and the United States.

"Coming back to the U.S., I was interrogated at Homeland Security,

and all of the footage that I had shot in Iran was confiscated from me.

And I had to do multiple, extensive interviews with the FBI in order to regain the footage.

It was a huge kind of blow, I think, to my own sense of feeling, being an American

because, all of a sudden, it was like, 'What the hell are you doing?

You're treating me like a terrorist.'"

Iranian-Americans and other Middle Easterners are marked as "white" by the U.S. government.

But a lot of us don't agree with being labeled that way.

Many like Justin have grown up with constant reminders that they are not white,

especially after 9/11 and the "War on Terror."

"College applications, job applications, Iranian-Americans are confronted with this question,

'What race are you?'"

"Even though I know I'm technically supposed to check 'white,' no, I'm not going to."

"My whole life, I've always just put 'other,' and then put, you know, 'Iranian-American.'

Even though people would see me as, like, 'Whatever, you're white, just put the Caucasian box.'

I would just, I would always say I'm biracial."

"In the Iranian-American community, what is it like being, kind of, I guess I can say

a devout or a practicing Muslim?"

"I grew up in a Muslim household where, amidst all my cousins and aunts and uncles,

we were the most Muslim of them.

So I constantly had this struggle to figure out, like, well, how Muslim do I want to be?"

While most Iranians have a Muslim background, those in L.A. are predominantly secular.

So life as a practicing Muslim here can sometimes be difficult.

"If I'm going to wear hijab, it really creates a bind for me to be able to connect with Iranians.

For the first time, with the travel ban, I feel like Iranians are kind of coming together

and saying no – as a people, we stand up and say that this is wrong."

"We named him after he was born. We decided for Sajjad Ali.

And it became very important for us that just because he can pass off as white,

because he is three-quarters Persian, and because we want him to identify as Muslim,

that his name precedes all of that."

There was one more thing I had to do while I was in L.A.:

get some amazing Iranian food.

Alex recommended a place called It's All Good House of Kabob, a restaurant you'd only find in Tehrangeles.

Just look at the walls.

This is the only place in America I've seen serve Isfahani biryani.

It's kind of like a really flavorful Iranian lamb burger with lots of herbs and spices.

"This is what happens when you try to eat for a camera."

"Was there ever a moment in your life when you became more aware of your, sort of, Iranian identity?"

"When the U.S. invaded Iraq, I was at a school where there were actually no Iranians.

People would call me 'Saddam Hussein' and 'Osama bin Laden' in the halls."

"Oh my god."

"The difference between an Iraqi, an Afghan, an Iranian or anything else didn't really matter.

There was a kind of hatred towards Muslims, towards people who look Muslim."

"I very much wanted to blend in, I didn't want to look different. I mean, obviously I had

these eyebrows and these facial features.

Interestingly enough, yeah, the mustache just came out very quickly, I should say."

"Hair developing quickly is a big theme with Iranians, I think.

It's the moment when you realize there's something different about you.

That's when your whiteness suddenly falls apart."

"Here's the big question. Persian or Iranian or Iranian-American or something else?"

"I prefer to identify myself as Iranian, and often I specify Iranian from Los Angeles because I really do feel like

the fact that I'm from Los Angeles adds a certain dimension to my Iranian-ness

that for me is like powerful. This combination of people, this diversity that exists in Los Angeles,

I think, has really shaped how I think about being Iranian."

Talking to young Iranian-Americans in L.A., I've realized something:

Despite all the stereotypes and discrimination, a lot of us are actually embracing our Iranian-ness.

It made me think about my own dual identity, as someone who didn't grow up in Tehrangeles.

I wanted to talk to my family about what they went through.

And how that's helped me become my own version of Iranian-American.

So we've given you a little taste of L.A.'s Iranian community in the past two episodes,

but the truth is, there's little pockets of Tehrangeles all over southern California --

in Glendale, Irvine, Palos Verdes -- everywhere.

In the next episode, though, we're heading back to northern California to interview my own parents.

Don't forget to subscribe for more stories from Untold America.

Top 5 Best Looking Games on KickStarter - March 2018 - Duration: 7:40.

hi everybody and welcome to get indie gaming where today we're carrying on

with our Kickstarter indie game run through and looking at five of the most

promising games seeking funding via the platform let's begin this March edition

with phantom halls a procedurally generated haunted house game that's

already out an early access although the developers have come to the platform for

a last round of funding before the intended aim of a Halloween 2018 full

release date available to play in both single-player and co-op phantom Hall

sees you move through a spooky old house where the horrors and frights are

different each time the devs are calling a game that's very much like a real time

worms with the chaos of spelunky and they're looking for just over 41,000

dollars to help deliver the last bits and pieces before launch longer-term

goals for the game include customization additional differentiated rooms and

unique abilities for each character plus also the addition of more characters as

time goes by the starting tier of $7 includes a shout-out in the credits

whereas 21 bucks gets you a steam key all the way up to somewhere near nine

hundred and fifty US dollars where you can meet the developers get your

likeness featured in the game and an awful lot more finishing April 13th as

we stand today there's some way for this to go although there's plenty time for

this to pick up a wider base of support

up now big drunk satanic massacre perhaps ultimately and unfortunately

shortened to BDSM sees you play this action RPG as Lu the son of Satan and a

chap who particularly fond of alcohol and women izing as you join his quest to

find the mistress who by all accounts is the hottest demoness in hell who's held

captive by a not so scary looking clown taking a look at the trailer and

gameplay you're not wrong to think this one has elements of Diablo as you hack

and slash your way through countless enemies and monsters as you go about

your business in the underworld levels include a fast food inspired cafe the

back whack the skeleton sums and the red-light district

at the end of each section you've a boss to see off which like every foe in the

game can be vested with your weapons and magic in a first for us here in this

series as we press upload on this video the game's funding campaign has been

suspended by the mods at Kickstarter with the devas thus far saying such a

suspension has come out of nowhere with perhaps a nod towards the game

overstepping the mark from a Content naming convention perhaps as we

suggested earlier shortening the game's name to BDSM wasn't the wisest of

choices to go with we understand if the campaign remains frozen the team will

look for an alternative platform and we wish them all the best of luck with this

in the future

loads of darkness and holy princes in high places

IRA's looking for 95 thousand US dollars with a campaign that ends April 18th our

third place for March one night is an 80s inspired horror fantasy action RPG

set within a small American town during the iconic times of the 1980s

it's a classic coming-of-age tale where you take control of Jon while his

adventure takes him on an hour-by-hour experience of what might become the last

day of the world you'll be able to choose your in-game class and one of

nine options that in turn allow further customization depending on how you wish

to develop your skill tree each skill tree has three branches with each branch

holding ten talents so there's plenty options available within your

character's development on the look and feel side of things the pixel art while

not everybody's cup of tea looks well-crafted accurate and offers a sense

of dread and foreboding that seems highly appropriate for a game where

you're up against the evil undead werewolves bio lords and even the odd

shrieking hag expected late this year or early next year if horan action RPGs are

your thing one night seems full of promise

already exceptionally well funded past its aims having reached its 450 thousand

US dollars target in 36 hours iron harvest is looking a rather

impressive spectacle sharing the same world and Laura's a critically acclaimed

board game size this real-time dieselpunk mech strategy game looks to

have drawn from the classic RTS offerings with a modern camera viewpoint

with iron harvest we're experiencing an alternative 1920s reality with the title

being a reference to the period soon after World War one when farmers were

discovering leftover munitions from the great war and it's with these munitions

you're looking to harvest in order to earn a fortune by doing so from a

gameplay angle King art game suggests company of heroes and men at war other

main inspirations for iron harvest will lead hero characters mechs and soldiers

into epic battles in open sandbox maps cover mechanics and dynamic destruction

will also play a major role in combat where the action looks tight and focused

on small number of combat units rather than a larger scale on the face of

things that doesn't appear to be too much in the way of base building going

on here - Age of Empires this certainly isn't unlike many other campaigns the

team here behind the game have said if they reach all of their stretch goals

which go up to one and a half million dollars no further features shall be

announced stating by doing so you make the work behind the development even

harder and harder they'd rather focus on delivering upon the promises with free

add-on DLCs at a later date the campaign ends April 13th with no doubt what will

be a handsome amount of cash to take the project forward the delivery timeline is

late 2019 with the game coming on the windows PlayStation 4 and Xbox one at

the top of the pile for March Sarla is a charming looking

point-and-click adventure puzzle game that looks to blend photographic

background images with beautifully hand-drawn sketches in tala you take

control of a wee little tree spirit who lives within a small woodland town where

toadstools and other things such as rocks are used for housing the game will

see you set out upon a quest to rescue the town's guardian from a spooky

sounding place known as the deep woods the UI is very easy to understand and

use his nonverbal system similar to other adventures of this type we found

the little demo or rather enjoyable experience it's fun subtle and cleverly

done and easily managed to put a wide smile across our faces as we played

looking for somewhere in the region of 13 thousand US dollars rewards include

your name in the credits a digital download of the game art prints and

right up to five hundred and fifty dollars that will see your likeness so

that of a loved one added to the game as an NPC Tyler's funding round finishes on

April 11th and as this video airs the team are a quarter of the way there

dollars expected to launch at some point next year although as we said earlier

players are able to get a taste of the game in a demo that's available to play

now with Tyler's interesting take on merging hand-drawn animations with photo

images that pretty much concludes our March indie game Kickstarter overview

were always interested to see if you're planning on following or perhaps even

backing any of these games with your hard earned cash to please be sure to

let us know in the usual sections we're nearly through the first quarter of the

year and so far it's been an amazing start by the looks of it there's plenty

more to come as we move into April and Beyond many thanks for watching and hope

to see you here again soon for more videos

Top 10 Worst Tattoos Ever – Part 6 - Duration: 5:38.

How's it going all of you most amazing top teners?

I'm your host Landon Dowlatsingh and before we get into this video I want to know, what

is something that you love to do?

Let me know your answers in the comments because I would love to read them.

For some people, they love to get tattoos.

Tattoos can be pretty awesome when they have a symbolic meaning or if they are done really

well.

But today, we aren't going to be talking about those kinds of tattoos, instead we are

going to be looking at the top 10 worst tattoos ever part 6.

Starting off in at number 10 we have A retired pirate.

Ahoy, matey… yeah it looks like this guy didn't want to let go of the past.

He permanently wanted an eye patch and American flag bandana tattooed onto his face.

I hope he's getting a pirate retirement pension because this look would make it extremely

hard to get a job.

He doesn't look too happy in this picture, wait a minute I'm pretty sure this is a

mug shot.

He must've been caught stealing a treasure or another pirate ship.

And now in at number 9 we have an educational tattoo.

Okay not really, but this tattoo is a cautionary tale.

Stay in school kids because you are never too cool for school especially when you spell

school wrong.

This is a pretty ironic and horrible tattoo.

I hope he didn't get it anywhere that's visible because this could be extremely embarrassing.

A troll comes in at number 8.

Guys, take a look at this creepy thing.

It actually must take a lot of maintenance on his part because he always needs to make

sure the trolls hair is on fleek.

Or should I say arm hair?

I'm also going to call this tattoo the chick repellent because I don't think anyone is

going to want to get with him after seeing this troll staring into your soul.

I see you comes in at number 7.

This guy is always watching you, even when you sleep and no, he's not Santa Claus.

Take a look at his creepy tattoo.

Why would anyone want to do this?

Not only would this be really painful but it's just super creepy.

I can't look at this picture any longer so let's move on.

A not so cute family portrait comes in at number 6.

Ok I feel bad for this father because he probably has a very cute set of twins but this tattoo

does not do them any justice.

Ughhh and I feel bad for the people who have to pretend that this is a good tattoo.

It looks like his babies are floating in a pond of thick black tar.

Ba da ba ba ba I'm lovin' it makes it into number 5.

Ok this person has an unhealthy obsession with McDonalds.

I don't know anyone else who would want a McDonalds receipt tattooed onto their flesh.

But wait, let's zoom into the receipt because I'm pretty sure this guy got ripped off

or this is the most expensive McDonalds in the world.

This guy paid $2 for a coke and $35 for a happy meal, oh wait… this is in a foreign

currency.

Phew, I almost felt bad for him.

Number 4 brings us to poop.

The tattoo artist is actually facing a $100,000 lawsuit after he gave his ex-girlfriend a

steaming pile of shit tattoo.

The ex-girlfriend claimed that he was supposed to tattoo a scene from Narnia on her back

but he found out that she had cheated on him with his best friend so he decided to get

the ultimate revenge.

Yeah, I wouldn't recommend screwing over the person who has a needle to your skin.

I hope she learned her lesson.

Hey you guyssss (the goonies reference) comes in at number 3.

This guy thought it would be amazing to get a tattoo on the back of his head that looks

like sloth from The Goonies.

Imagine you're writing a test in school and you're sitting behind this guy…

I would find it extremely hard to concentrate.

This guy is trying to peek at your paper.

But in all seriousness, this tattoo is the definition of regret and hopefully he can

grow out his hair to cover it up.

A very very very loyal girlfriend comes in at number 2.

Wow, I'm almost speechless.

Why would anyone do this to themselves.

This girl thought she would show her love by getting a tattoo that covers half of her

face.

It looks so painful and infected and it's there for life.

She should change her name to unemployed.

You could've gotten a little tattoo of Rus on your wrist or ankle but nooo.

You thought what the hell I'm going to get it on my face.

I guess she's not the brightest crayon in the box.

Finally in at number 1 we have this gross butterfly.

Yeah, there aren't really any words for this except for maybe regret, mistake, shame,

remorse, guilt, disgrace, humiliation… ok ok you get the point.

This person is going to be 70 years old with a penis butterfly on her lower back.

Come on people, think logically before you get a tattoo.

This one might even haunt my dreams tonight so I'm going to stop talking about it.

Well there you guys go…

There are plenty of classic menu items to choose from at Wendy's, like the tried-and-true

Frosty.

But did you know this creamy favorite has been around since Wendy's was first founded

in 1969?

According to the official Wendy's website, founder Dave Thomas wanted a dessert so thick

you had to eat it with a spoon, and so the Frosty, conceived as a cross between a milkshake

and soft-serve ice cream, was born.

To keep the chocolate flavor from being too overwhelming, Thomas added vanilla to the

recipe.

The result was a sweet, chocolate treat that perfectly complemented a hamburger.

While this chocolate/vanilla combo was the default Frosty flavor for decades, the vanilla

Frosty launched in 2006.

Unexpected success

When Wendy's was launched in 1969, there were just five items on the menu.

Thomas didn't have great ambitions for the first restaurant he opened in Columbus, Ohio.

He simply wanted a small, local chain where his kids could work in the summer.

Despite his modest expectations, Thomas soon found himself with a successful business.

He opened a second Wendy's after a year and by 1974, sales totaled at nearly $25 million.

By the end of 1976, not even a decade since the company was started, there were 500 Wendy's

locations.

"Gee, this is pretty good."

Famous face

Dave Thomas had four kids and knew one of them would become the face of the restaurant,

but he wasn't playing favorites when he picked 8-year-old Melinda, nicknamed Wendy.

She told People in 1990,

"Dad wanted a name that was easy to remember, and he wanted an all-American mug.

I was redheaded and had freckles and buck teeth, so I got elected."

Wendy admitted to often being embarrassed because of her famous face.

"There was always teasing.

It just goes with the territory."

Dropout to entrepreneur

The success of Wendy's is even more impressive when you look at the history of Dave Thomas.

A high school dropout, Thomas served in the Korean War before becoming a cook.

He went on to work at Kentucky Fried Chicken, where he came up with the idea for the KFC

chicken bucket.

After climbing through the ranks, Thomas left the company in 1969 and founded Wendy's.

The rest is history.

After Wendy's became a success, a 61-year-old Thomas went back to school to earn his GED.

He then founded the Dave Thomas Education Center to help other high school dropouts

earn their GEDs, as well.

Value pioneer

Value menus have been standard at fast food restaurants for decades, but Wendy's was the

first, launching the first value menu in 1989, nearly a decade before Burger King got on

the value menu train in 1998.

Denny Lynch, the senior VP of communications for Wendy's, explained why the company decided

to offer menu items at a discounted price.

"At that time, all of the hamburger chains were going after each other and it escalated

to the point where we were seeing 99 cent Whoppers and Big Macs.

[...] We had the idea of rather than selling one of our big items at 99 cents, creating

a whole menu with 99-cent items.

We wanted our customers to be able to make a full meal with these lower-priced items."

Hip to be square

Wendy's is noted for the unusual shape of its hamburger patties.

There's a good reason the patties are square instead of round.

Thomas got the idea for the square patties from a Michigan restaurant called Kewpee Burger

which served square-shaped patties.

Thomas decided to incorporate these patties so customers could easily see the freshness

of the meat.

The corners of the square patties stick out past the circular bun, making it easy to see

just how juicy the burger really is.

Beef lady beef

Wendy's launched a series of memorable commercials in the 1984 featuring a catch phrase that

became world famous:

"Where's the beef?"

The commercials were so successful that Wendy's become synonymous with the phrase, and the

actress delivering it, Clara Peller.

But Peller was fired in 1985 for starring in a Prego spaghetti sauce commercial.

In the commercial, Peller announced that she had finally found the beef, angering Wendy's.

A spokesperson for the chain said,

"The commercial infers that Clara found the beef at somewhere other than Wendy's restaurants.

Unfortunately, Clara's appearance in the ads makes it extremely difficult for her to serve

as a credible spokesperson for our products."

Limited breakfast

While Wendy's is one of the most successful fast food companies in the world, it's stuck

to mainly serving lunch and dinner, unlike many of its competitors, who have breakfast

menus.

Wendy's has experimented with breakfast menus in the past, but never experienced enough

success to launch a permanent, nationwide breakfast menu.

CEO Emil Brolick told Bloomberg,

"We have tested breakfast many times over the years and we feel, as virtually the only

large national chain that hasn't gotten into breakfast, it's very difficult to enter that

space today and commit the kind of marketing resources that we feel would be necessary

to really entrench ourselves successfully."

While the restaurant does have a limited breakfast menu, it's only served in select locations.

So if you're chowing down on Wendy's at sunrise, consider yourself lucky.

Media & Money: Crash Course Media Literacy #5 - Duration: 10:16.

Did you know Finding Dory made 486 million dollars in 2016?

Or that Barack and Michelle Obama received 65 million dollars in advance of writing their newest books?

Or that Beyonce made 105 million dollars in 2017?

Those are the big bucks, people.

Sure, media is a form of communication and the foundation of our shared culture.

But it's more than a collection of songs and books and movies and newspapers.

It's also a lot of money.

The media is a big collection of massive, money-making industries.

That means most of the media you digest was made by specific people with specific paychecks.

And that money has a specific impact.

Understanding how and why media is produced, the business of it all, is key to the full media literacy picture.

If last episode was about your mind on media, today is all about your media on money.

[Theme Music]

Pretend for a second you're a superstar movie director with a string of award-winning hits.

Hollywood anxiously awaits your next film, but you're feeling the pressure.

First you've got to land on idea – should it be an original film? A remake? A sequel? About what?

Who's gonna write it? You? That woman with the funny webseries you love? A studio hack paid by the word?

Speaking of studios, who are you going to work with?

Will they have a say in what you make, and how it's written? Or who's in it?

Then you've got to shoot the thing.

Find the perfect cast, build all the sets or find locations, pay the CGI company, hire a costume designer, make sure the schedule runs on time.

And then it's not even over! Hopefully a distributor will pick it up.

Who will see it? How will it be advertised?

Will your cast end up on every late night show to promote it?

That's a lot of questions to answer.

So instead of making decisions, you're sitting on your couch eating cereal and watching Scandal reruns pretending your problems don't exist.

But you're not a big-shot Hollywood director.

(Well if you are – hit me up in the DMs.)

Anyway: have you ever thought about how much goes into a movie before it gets to your screen?

Or before a video game gets to the store or a newspaper onto your doorstep?

Media is made.

Every bit of it is constructed by someone, or groups of someones.

Each step of the way they've made choices, too, about what to create and how to create it.

And they've made those decisions based on life experiences, preferences and money – who has it, and how they can make more of it.

But those choices affect you, the consumer.

First, let's focus on why media is created.

Its purpose, like to entertain, inform or persuade.

The reason a piece of work is created can be really helpful in understanding its impact.

An advertisement's purpose is to convince the viewer to buy a product.

You see an ad for soda, you know the company created and paid for it in hopes that you will buy their soda.

Great, that's an easy one.

What about movies?

You might say they're made for entertainment, duh. They're for fun.

And yes, movies are made to make money and entertain.

But if that was their only purpose, a lot more movies would just be remakes of Titanic, the greatest and most entertaining film of all time.

Some movies are made to bring up important topics and encourage cultural conversations.

On the outside, Pixar's Inside Out looks like a film made to bring families together through entertainment.

But if you've seen Inside Out you know it's really a film designed to make you cry while contemplating the complexity of human emotion,

and how we're all so different and yet the same.

Or think about the film "Get Out."

On one level, it's a horror movie about a man whose girlfriend's family wants to kill him.

But along the way, the film unpacks issues of contemporary racism and how horrifying the modern world can be to black men.

Every piece of media has many purposes, and they each impact how the work is made from day one.

If purpose is the "why" of media creation," the "what" is focus.

Focus is the topic or subject, what we're including (and at the same time excluding) when we create.

Sometimes deciding what to focus on is the name of the game – like when a newspaper can only fit so many stories on the front page.

They're deciding what news is the most important.

But sometimes focus can be a bit more...manipulative.

Like that soda ad you saw earlier; it didn't mention how much sugar each bottle contains or how it will affect your health.

It just wants you to think about that crisp, refreshing taste.

Or a government report that touts how many jobs were created last month, but conveniently leaves out that most of those jobs were low-paying, temporary ones.

The thing is, the purpose and focus of media can affect how you think about other people, especially when they're not like you.

Let's head into the Thought Bubble to wrestle with that a bit.

Media texts have the power to impact your understanding of things like race, ethnicity, gender, age, disability, or sexual orientation.

The way they deal with and present these topics is called representation.

Like everything else, the way different people and places are represented in media is always a choice.

And since the mass media is disproportionately run and created by straight white men, that means the representations of everyone else can skew toward stereotype.

Think about a pretty common TV trope, the "gay BFF" stereotype.

There's Kurt and Blaine from Glee.

Cameron from Modern Family, Justin from Ugly Betty.

Or, throwback, Jack McFarlan from Will & Grace and Stanford from Sex and the City.

What do they all have in common?

Well, as I mentioned, they're gay men.

They're all the BFF to a major female character.

Also, they're all fashion-conscious, they all love theater.

Most of them have really broad personalities, too.

Weird how they're all so...similar.

Media representation of gay men has historically skewed toward these stereotypical depictions, where only one type of gay man is found on-screen.

Our brains love familiar things since they're easier to understand.

So why invest in shows written by and about complex gay men or women, or LGBTQ people of color, when you could save time and money by lazily using stereotypes instead?

Plus, as a familiar stereotype, this representation can be used in mainstream media without ruffling too many conservative feathers.

That means more viewers and more money.

This is a big problem for diverse cultures that have trouble understanding each other.

When minority groups are frequently stereotyped in the media, people may start to believe the associated stereotype is even more true.

They reinforce themselves.

Paying attention to how different groups and people are represented in the media is critical.

Each representation is a choice made by the creator, sometimes because of money, and they can be used to positively or negatively impact how we think.

Thanks, Thought Bubble!

Of course, every production choice isn't part of a grand scheme to sell more pop music or prevent more women of color from directing films.

The media is a nebulous group of individuals all doing particular jobs.

But there are people and systems at work within the business of media that help block or perpetuate certain stereotypes and ideologies.

For instance, cultural theorist Stuart Hall wrote about how racist ideologies are spread through the media.

He said, "It would be wrong and misleading to see the media as uniformly and conspiratorially harnessed to a single, racist conception of the world."

The idea of "the media" monolith doesn't exist.

If it's not some grand conspiracy, how do stereotypes and ideologies like these persist?

That's right, it's money again.

Who has it, and where they want to spend it.

If you've ever posted on Tumblr or doodled in a notebook, you were probably able to do that for free.

But somewhere along the way, someone had to pay for your internet access and phone or a notebook and pen.

Maybe you paid for it, or your parents did.

But without that money, you couldn't have even doodled.

All types of media creation require some kind of money.

The big, fancy, mass media kind, like publishing a newspaper or making a movie, requires a lot.

And not everyone has the money to create media.

When you don't have the money to create media, sometimes you can get other people to pay for you to create it.

Like a patron or an investor.

But because media creation costs money, and not everyone has money, it's most often done by people who already have it.

And those who have it often want to spend it on people and things they already know will make more money.

How do they decide who to give it to?

They consider who has experience making media that makes money.

And usually that's people who have already had the money to make media to make money.

It's a cycle that prevents different voices from creating different kinds of media, keeping cultural power in the hands of a few.

Critical theorists Theodor Adorno and Max Horkheimer believed that this closely held, homogenous mass media was dangerous.

"Culture today is infecting everything with sameness" they wrote...in 1944.

They thought that mass-produced popular culture created for profit lulled consumers into passive contentment.

No matter your situation, you'd be happy as a clam if you could access the easy entertainment of pop culture.

At the same time, it manufactured needs in the audience – like I need to see this movie, I need that brand of shampoo to be happy –

that could only be solved by buying more stuff.

In many ways, social media has helped break this cycle by lifting up diverse voices and challenging the ways media is traditionally made.

Social media campaigns have even thrown the spotlight on negative or non-existent representations in mass media.

But the mega media players still tend to dominate the scene.

That's not to say every creative decision is based solely on money.

Plenty of decisions are made for practical reasons, or by people just doing mundane jobs.

Each one may not seem like a big deal, but when strung together they create all the media we absorb.

We spend most of our day with media, so it's crucial we understand what is created by who, how, and for what reason.

It's almost as important as constantly reminding each other that media is created.

It didn't just appear out of nowhere; humans did that.

And humans do some weird stuff, especially for money.

Hi everyone! We are Dany and Zelda

and we're gonna tell you a little bit about us

My name is Daniela Garzon

Im 22 years

but ppl often think I'm way younger

My favorite color is purple, I love everything in that color

but if I had to choose a color of clothes it would be black

My favorite food

I can't really choose since I love almost everything

but if I had to choose it would be pizza!

I've been with mommy since I was a 2 months old puppy

I used to bite her clothes and shoes

I studied Air Traffic Controller, some people

don't know what is this about, but ill explain quick

we are the people who work in this tower

and we help the aircraft to fly, land, and take off safely

so its most likely

that I controlled some of you while I was doing my live practices at La Paz

I used to be really scared of water

I hated the beach because the waves

were terrifying, but now I love to jump

and run in them.

The only thing I hate now are pools, and of course bath time.

I love Thai Food!!

It is delicious! Let me know in the comments if you've tasted it

because its really delicious, and if you haven't you must try it.

Ive never dyed my hair

but I used sun in once

its a spray

you have to put it in your hair and then go out to the sun

so it gets lighter, but I didn't read

that for brunettes

it could work different

so I spent a while with red hair lol

I looked super funny and it took ages to go back to normal

If I had to choose something sweet it would be

chocolate!! I love it and I can't live without it

People thinks Im a male most of the time

could it be cause im 0% girly?

Something that really amazes me

is that Zelda understands commands in English and Spanish

Do you sleep with this thingggg?

I can't !! I only can sleep without em.

Zelda falls asleep with duvets or pillows

My dream is to take Zelda to the snow

I know she would love it!!

and id love to watch her run free

cause I've seen a lot of dogs

that really enjoy it!

Its an something that id

love to experience

My favorite toy used to be a Dalmatian, I used to fall asleep with it

and i hated when my cousins wanted to touch it

because I hate to share

I would change anything in my life

because every thing that has happened to me

has taken me where I am now and made me the person I am today.

My favorite movie

is always going to be What Happens in Vegas

is a bit old but I love it

I think it is because I watched it a lot of times when I was a kid

i like

EVERYTHING

to eat, but If had to choose it would be something from the trash

I love cloudy days

cause I feel like you can do a lot of stuff, like running

cause it wont be hot, or you can stay

watching Netflix

Something I always wear

is this necklace, my mom gave it to me

so its very special to me.

Zelda wears a gps in her collar

cause my last roomies left the door open a lot of times

and while I was at school they used to call me to let me know Zelda got out

I almost got a heart attack, I always took my keys and went home like crazy

but they always catched her before I got here

im so thankful she never got lost

she never actually ran off.

Something I really hate

are cockroaches!!!

They are super nastyyyy

and the ones that fly are even worse

have you been attacked by one?

i have a mini heart attack when they fly

I really hope you never get attacked by one flying cockroach

My favorite place for winter

that has happened to me

sorry guys Zeldas playing with her toys lol

and I can't stop her cause she's the boss

Something really painful were

2 sprain ankles, one of them

for holding Zelda in my arms

and a fracture

The fracture is the worst thing ever

I used a huge cast

and I couldn't walk during 1.5 months!!

I love them mommy brushes my teeth

the toothpaste my mom buys

its delicious!!!

Zelda used to have allergies, it has been a while since she got the last one

but I had to learn how to give her the meds myself

cause theres not

24 hr hospitals in every city

So I had to learn, and joined first aids classes for dogs

it was really fun tho, and I learn a bunch of other things

My happy place on earth

is six flags!! Im an adrenaline junkie

I could spend hours there!!

And I don't mind how many days in a row we go

it never gets boring!

Zelda use to have bluer eyes

this is Zelda when she was a puppy

with time they started to become a little bit more white

I love them anyway and she looks gorgeous

and I wish I could have them lol, but yeah when she was a baby they were unbeliveable blue

Im a really short person

I think I could be a minion

My height is 1.52 cm

i know

im way too small

lol

Sometimes I think

Zelda is a mute dog cause she wont speak!!

She doesn't bark or howl

She only does it when she's hungry or when she gets super excited

I really like the balconies cause I go out there

to take fresh air

and I like to watch the people walking by

Zelda is the only dog that has been with me everywhere

we have moved 3 times and she has been there with me

I take her everywhere with me!

I have 4 more dogs

and they stay there, 3 of them are rescued

all of them are so cute

My favorite hobby is

to take photos! I really enjoy it

and Zelda is my favorite model.

but if I had to choose another animal besides that one it would be

a horse

cause when I was a kid I always wanted to have one

My favorite fruit, hmm I like a lot of fruits but if I have to choose

it would be the strawberry

cause it tastes good with everything! Alone, with honey or

on a milkshake

it doesn't matter it tastes great!

If I could learn a new language id love to learn German

I love how it sounds

and its a challenge cause I feel like its a little bit hard

I really love reading, I actually have a bookshelf

and decided to spay her

My favorite tv show will always be

gossip girl

i have seen it like 5 times and it never gets old

I have a shopping problem

BAYERN'S JAVI MARTINEZ ON FACING SEVILLA IN THE UCL - Duration: 3:24.

They are a strong team, I think.

I have watched a lot of games from them,

as I follow the Spanish league.

The first half of the season they maybe were not in a good shape

or simply they were not playing well.

But now in the second half they are doing really well.

The most important is they are playing like a big team.

For example against Manchester United they have shown they are a big team.

In the important minutes, in the important part of the game,

they act like a big team and that's why they are very dangerous.

I think the people who think it will be easy to face are really, really wrong.

Of course when you say the favourites,

you name always Barcelona, Real Madrid or Bayern Munich.

But I'm sure if we are not at 100 per cent,

if we don't give our all we will not win but go out.

So we have to not underestimate our opponent.

We have to treat them like what they are.

They are a big team, they are fighters,

they are players with good quality.

So yes, as I told you it's not gonna be easy.

I played many times there;

it's one of the most special games in the Spanish season,

because of the atmosphere there.

The crowd is really loud, they scream a lot.

I don't know if it will be at the time of the 'Feria de Abril',

a big party like the Oktoberfest, but in Sevilla.

I don't know if it's during the same dates,

but if the time matches, it would be a big party.

Because all people during the 'Feria de Abril' get crazy,

it's amazing to go there.

I think we were very lucky this year with stadiums.

We played at Celtic, which was amazing,

then at Besiktas...

I still have a...

a ringing on my ear because of the crowd.

And now Sevilla, that will be very nice.

You'll see it's very nice to play there.

I think the Spanish league is one of the strongest in the world.

You can see they are always in the finals, or the semi-finals,

of Champions League and Europa League.

They are really strong...

I don't know why, but they are always there.

I know that the Spanish teams are always hard to face,

so we have to be very careful with Sevilla.
