Greetings Earthlings!
Welcome to the Madqueen Show!
I am your host the MadQueen.
On today's menu, we have a new Cyberpunk 2077 lore video for you
and today we're going to talk about the basics.
All of them.
Because I usually go really in deep into the lore and lately there's a lot of new people
in the channel and the game is attracting a lot of people who know nothing of the original
pen and paper game, so in here I'm going to talk about all the lore together for you
to understand the universe as a whole and the major events that happened in this universe
and led to the events in the video game Cyberpunk 2077.
So, grab your popcorn because this is going to be long and, for those who know nothing
yet about this universe, now you're going to understand why I'm so hyped about the game
and I'm not the only one.
Let's go for it.
The video game Cyberpunk 2077 is based on the pen and paper roleplaying game written
by Mike Pondsmith and first edited in the late 80s, the lore of this universe is distributed
in more than 30 books and along three editions: the first edition called Cyberpunk 2013 or
only Cyberpunk, a second edition called Cyberpunk 2020 and a third edition called Cyberpunk 2036,
and as you can guess all these numbers are years so the lore explains a lot of history
before the events in the video game in 2077.
Unlike other video games based on existing works, the Polish developer CD Projekt,
the studio that is developing Cyberpunk 2077, is working closely with the creator of the
Pen and Paper game Mike Pondsmith to create a game that faithfully represents his universe.
This is a universe where people live together with technology and uses technology to fight
the oppressive powers of the world.
Everybody is cybernetically enhanced, they have cyber limbs, cyber eyes, cyber-everything,
you can even be a full cyborg.
This excess of cyber-implants in the body gave way to the most extended mental illness
of the 21st century, the Cyber Psychosis, that is the illness that the female protagonist
of the teaser has: she goes crazy and kills "meatbags", that are people that are further
from machines than she is, because they have less cyber implants.
In this universe, drugs are considered something normal in your everyday life as well as carrying
an insane amount of weapons with you.
Your typical Science Fiction setting but a step beyond, into this science fiction subgenre
called Cyberpunk.
This universe is also a parallel temporary line different to ours, with a temporal line
that started to diverge from ours at the early 90s.
So it's not a futuristic setting branching from our world today, the Cyberpunk universe
was already different to ours in the 90s.
The philosophy of this game goes along the lines of the Cyberpunk genre, the world of
Cyberpunk is a violent, dangerous place, filled with people
who would love to rip your arm off and eat it.
The traditional concepts of good and evil are replaced by what is called
"values of convenience",
meaning that you do what you need to do to survive, and if you can do some
good along the way, great, but don't count on it.
The typical Cyberpunk heroes are anti-heroes, they do what they can to survive.
This is not a game about saving the world, is a game about saving yourself.
So you can expect Cyberpunk 2077 to be a very mature game filled with, what it's called,
"gray areas of morality".
The philosophy of the Cyberpunks, also called the "edgerunners", can be summarized in
Style over substance, attitude is everything and living on the edge.
Think dangerous, be dangerous, take risks and look fabulous while you do it.
This is a world ruled by megacorporations, the power structures of the cyberpunk age.
Megacorporations are companies that acquired an immense power
due to a world stock crash in the 94.
The economies of the world were ruined and the governments needed the help of the corporations
to rebuild themselves, and in exchange for their help, megacorporations gained power.
Lots of power.
And they made with this power pretty much as they pleased.
The Megacorporations that rule the Cyberpunk age are in constant battle amongst each other.
All of them have, or try to have, the monopoly over a certain product or service that they
are the best at, and battles amongst corporations are not done only in the economic level, but
they turn into real battlefields.
The main megacorporations have either armies of their own or buy the services of the 3
main providers of military and mercenary security: the megacorporations Arasaka, Lazarus or Militech
In this dangerous world where the competence strives
to destroy what you treasure the most
there is an ally you can rely on
the number one agency with the highest class operatives
and the largest and more reliable catalog of arms and equipment
MILITECH Fist Line of Defense
The "disagreements" amongst megacorporations sometimes become so overt that they turned
into real wars, and that's what is known as the 4 Corporate Wars.
The first Corporate war opened the door to corporations to openly go to war for economic interests
The second was the most environmentally devastating,
the third took place in the net,
which I will explain later what it is,
and the 4th Corporate War was the biggest of them all and it
was a worldwide conflict where most countries and megacorps were involved and had a huge
impact in the Cyberpunk universe.
And in the words of Mike Pondsmith, creator of the Cyberpunk universe
The great part about 2077 is that it's a mature form of that
We are basically able to progress a larger arc
Should going to get to see the outcomes of things that we started talking about
in the 4th Corporate War
The economy is not the only thing
that was destroyed in this universe at the end of the 20th century,
due to an insane amount of ecological disasters and the rise of global temperature,
the world is a wasteland and, in general, everything is pretty fucked up.
The action of the video game takes place in Night City, originally called Coronado City
but renamed after the death of its architect Richard Night.
Night City was a new city, meaning it was built after the collapse.
This city was built between 1993 and 2005 in the east part of the Free State of Northern
California, thanks to the investments made by the Megacorporations
Arasaka, PetroChem and EBM.
But this city evolved later due to necessity.
The Worldwide conflict known as the Fourth Corporate War destroyed a good part of both
the north and the south of the Free States of California.
This war was settled with a mini-nuke exploding in the corporate center of Night City in 2022.
So, goodbye to Night City as we knew it.
But, it was rebuilt.
Moving out of the nuclear fallout left by the mini-nuke that exploded, and thanks to
a Nano-Technological building method known as Nanotechnix, Night City was rebuilt and
expanded, using the wrecks of the cities of California as raw material to build the new city
expanding across and along of all that nowadays is California.
These Nanotechnix robots, that are microscopic robots, took the pieces of the old buildings
and put it in new star scrappers that expanded vertically.
These new buildings were controlled by an artificial intelligence and are what is known
as "genius buildings".
As your business grows, so does your need to have the most advanced facilites
What can be better for your business than a genious factory
Build for you in weeks and designed for your every need
Thanks to nanotechnology your new self-sutained premises
would take care of you allowing you more time
to focus on your clients
Nanobuilders
Making your business a genious business
But these nanobots built everywhere, and they even built on top of old cities that were
destroyed by the war, so Night City expanded vertically and horizontally, creating three
levels: The upper city, that is the posh part, the ground level, and the underground, that
is basically the old cities covered by the new Night City.
So remember when CD Projekt said the map was going to be more than 4 times the map of the
Witcher 3 with all the expansions?
Well, now you know why.
The existence of this nanotechnology, the nanobots, will give us destructible environments
in the video game, meaning you'll be able to destroy things
that will be rebuilt by nanobots.
In the world of Cyberpunk, there are two different worlds together: one is the real world,
and the other one is the Net.
The Net is some sort of Internet but closer to what people thought it would be in the
late 80s, something like the films The Lawnmower Man or Tron.
It's a virtual space that is a world by itself.
Some compare it with the Matrix but not exactly, in the Matrix you can die inside, but not
in the net, although there are other ways to kill someone that is connected to the net.
Ways that I will explain when I start with the lore videos on the net.
Everyone can connect to the net, and travel across it, but only a few are able to play
with it and enter into places inside the net that they shouldn't access.
These people are called Netrunners.
In the Cyber age, there are three main sources of entertainment:
Television, PopMedia and Braindance
Television is quite self-explanatory and is mainly ruled by media corps, that are entertainment
conglomerates, being the most powerful Network News 54 and World News Service.
PopMedia is some sort of YouTube, where entertainment is created by independent creators.
Braindance is a new form of entertainment where you live the previously recorded experiences
of another person, including all the senses and everything that this person feels when
is recording, and some forms of Braindance are, let's say, more legal than others.
In Night City, there are two things that determine who you are: where you live and what you do
for a living.
For where you live you can visit this video because is very long to explain, in there
you will also find the explanation of what an Edgerunner is and
where does this term come from.
What you do for a living in Night City is what we know as character classes, and you can be:
A solo, that are mercenaries, a cop that is quite self-explanatory and in here
you can be a regular cop or be one of these cops that hunt down cyberpsychos like in the
teaser, these cops are called the Psychosquad.
You can be a Netrunner, that are hackers that rather living on the net than in the real
and know how to move inside it like no one else does, or a Crystaljok if instead of hacking
inside the net you use more "old school" methods.
You can be a Rockerboy, that are musicians who use their art to fight authority with
lyrics filled with political statements and social commentary, unless you sell your soul
to a megacorporation, in that case, say goodbye to political statements and hello to be a
pop star, you can be a Panzerboy that are the pilots that are one with their vehicles
and extremely good at their jobs. Or a Fixer that are the mafia bosses of the Cyber age,
You can be one of the Techies that are either doctors of cyber implants or technical experts,
but you're only going to be called a Techie if you have a respectable position, if you
practice on the streets of Night City installing illegal cyberware, you're a Ripperdoc.
You can be a corporate if you work for a megacorporation.
You can be a Media, that can either be a reporter for big news megacorps like Network News 54
or a reporter that wants to unveil the truth and slip videos into the PopMedia.
And if you don't want to have a job but travel around with your pack, then, you're
a Nomad, you do what you can to survive and you're always moving.
We know that all character classes are going to be in the game, although we don't know
yet exactly which of them are going to be playable beyond the main character classes.
Well, folks, thanks for watching.
I believe that these are the basics of the lore that you need to know to enjoy Cyberpunk 2077
even more.
If you're curious and you'd like to know the lore more deeply, you can visit our lore playlist
where you'll have the lore explained in deep.
And even more lore videos to come, so
don't forget to subscribe and click your notifications button to make sure that you don't miss anything
at all.
And, obviously, there are no spoilers at all whatsoever to the game because the lore explains
the universe and its history, not the events that are going to take place during the game.
See you in next videos and stay being amazing!
