The gold in the middle: Practical Resilience - Duration: 6:27.

Congratulations! You have made it after the last six weeks of explaining the

Practical Resilience framework through the main core pillars of adversity,

mindset, gratitude and then the collision pillars where things converge. We have

discipline, obsession, and perspective. Now, we've reached the middle, which is

Practical Resilience, when you truly understand the framework, this framework

could save you this could save you from getting out of a rut. This could save you

from committing suicide. This could also help you to grow and it's been a journey

even in finding, cultivating this framework which is why I wrote this

thing in a more tangible piece so you can have me in like pretty much at your

hands but

there is even a few case studies I can prove where happened so I don't know if

you guys remember the last year there was the hurricane Harvey the flooding in

Texas, and I believe it was in Louisiana too - you have people all over the place

losing homes losing everything and no matter how rich you were if you have a

loss then you're not homeless. It was kind of cool to see that people got rid

of race, that got rid of gender, all these discriminatory labels these

discriminative labels and they're seeing a fellow civilian less in need so

there's want to help each other. So, through heavy heavy adversity there was

people coming together they're like they won't they don't miss sick of seeing

suffering and they're helping and I remember seeing an article of a bed

store they lent they're letting people stay in there so they can use their beds

because they lost their homes. I think it was a donut shop or there was a

liquor store they gave out like 155k cans of water and cans of drink that

they need. It's kind of cool to see that and I bet along the way there

would've been people now go you know they would have met some friendships

along through this like lifelong friends because they've gone through adversity

the most. There is an awesome book called 'The Happiness

Hypothesis' by Jonathan Haidt who talks about the difference between companionative

and passionate relationships. So, I should talk passionate first they're the more

romantic ones they're the ones that kind of dive too early because as soon as I

hit any adversity then it's gonna die off the the couples have been together

for 60-70 years and their love is stronger than ever

it's as if they've gone through adversity together and they're battling

it like as one, as a whole. That's a beautiful example the

Hurricane Harvey where you I know there's been deaths in the family we're having

to goes to the funeral and it brings everyone together and there's even times

when I've used Practical Resilience whether I should you know what should

out I'm sick of working for someone let's use it to kind of go start my own

thing like entrepreneurial kind of thing. And it's helping out so much where the

your appreciation on life has grown immensely. You start having liver

my empathy for others because you know what it feels like you hit rock bottom. There

are times where I come across other people they can talk they're talking

about their struggles and I can resonate with it because as humans we are wired

for story and connection, neurobiologically. I hope the last six

weeks of these videos, these blogs leading up to what Practical Resilience

is, to give you more of a deeper understanding what it's about, I hope

you've got some immense value from it. You're more than welcome to reach out to

me hit me up say hello wherever I'm alive on social

media. I'm pretty quite active on all of them. The book has just gotten live this

week so it's all live everywhere would really appreciate if you guys want to

buy a copy with if you purchase a book through me you pay whatever you want for

it. The thing is I'm about to go on tour and I don't really have anyone to manage

this right now so I'm just gonna drive it through Amazon in particular and

anywhere else that you can find it online. I wrote the book not for the ego

of saying I'm an author I don't even care for never known as an author I feel

like I'm more of a storyteller with this book. It's

not driving me to be a best-seller if I get a best-seller that's you know what

that accolade is always a bonus in my opinion. I wrote this bloody thing and I

put my absolute heart and soul into it that I wrote it to get someone out of a crisis

or prevent time from committing suicide that was the main reason I wrote this

thing. The secondary reason was to cultivate the superhuman out of people

to prove that you know what I'm just an obsessed and curious person.

When people are putting this connotation that I'm this crazy person

no I'm just obsessed and I know with what I want I just got a bit of clarity

and I can teach you that through the book and if there's any way that you

guys can grab a copy and share with your friends and maybe even leave a review

that would mean that would mean the world for me if not you're more than

what it's all good. I've also got the you can get the free first chapter on my

site you can download it for free. You can grab it on Amazon as well but I'm I'm so

grateful to have cultivated practical resilience this framework that has got

me out of my own ruts there are times where even where the book is at now

there are times where I don't pull out my hair and I go how I should just give

up on this but I always go back to thinking you know what I'm glad the

struggle is gonna make it worth it and that's a foreseen hindsight in the

moment that's that's hard it's like it always a Zen Buddhist mentality where we

go know the struggle we'll make it worth it because we're in it for the long haul

we're in it for enough for the greater good

and it's for impact it's to make someone's life easier but I hope you've

thought I hope you've got some awesome value from this I'm Toph Evans have a

wonderful day stay strong and please do not be afraid to reach out I'll be here

for you I brought you back have a wonderful day

[BUZZ]

LISTA: Hello? - Hey.

It's Blair.

LISTA: Oh.

Hi, Blair.

One second.

[CRYING]

79% of marriages today end in divorce.

This morning, my friend Lista updated

her Facebook relationship status to divorced.

So like any friend would, I rushed over.

Blair, you're so sweet to come check on me.

Yeah, I'm here to collect what's rightfully mine.

What?

I guess you heard.

OK, so I got you a cake cutter,

soup spoon, and a flat sheet off your wedding registry.

And you know what?

It was Bed Bath and Beyond expensive.

Are you serious?

Now show me the flat sheet.

Blair, I'm getting a divorce.

Yeah?

Well 87% of marriages end in divorce, so

what did you expect?

Why did you even get us gifts?

Don't you know that 50% of gifts end in returns?

Because I was 60% sure that you would tell everyone that I

didn't get you a gift, and then we

would have to friend break-up.

Well if we break up, then you would lose 50% of your friends.

OK, I'm 30% pissed at that comment right now.

And 70% still wants to know about the flat sheet.

I think John has it.

I have to go see John?

His eyes are so close together, and he smells like warm milk.

Oh my god, he totally does.

I never noticed how he always has--

BOTH: White spit on the corners of his mouth.

Yes, I did notice that.

[COUGHING]

Wow, Blair.

Thank you so much for stopping by.

I feel so much better.

What?

Planet Coaster | Society Park Part 34 | Farmers Entry - Duration: 18:42.

Hello fellow Planet Coaster lovers!

After our little detour with Water Witch last week we're back in Society Park

This area might be a bit unrecognisable since it has been a while since we've last seen it.

We're back at the heart of the park building the entrance for the Agricultural section.

The area deserves a proper entrance which I've based on those little farmer villages that you see here and there.

and offcourse I had to add a clocktower for that so I actually started off by building a one.

In the coming weeks I want to complete this entrance area, this also includes the entrance from the

Healthcare section. This way it will be actually seems to come more together before I continue theming the rides

that you've already seen in the background here and there.

But for this episode it is just the entrance from the heart of the park and connecting it to previous structures.

These buildings aren't very detailed. This is because the wooden coaster and ferris wheel are actually showing in

the background providing an interesting view and I didn't want to distract that with allot of details on the buildings

You can already see the ferris wheel towering above the buildings in this episodes minature logo.

Anyway enjoy the rest of the video and I'll catch you in the next one !

Beyond Today -- Baptism: Let's Talk About Your Salvation - Duration: 28:27.

[Darris McNeely] I recently met a man I will call Thomas.

He was baptized as a young child and lived his life thinking he was right with God and

his salvation assured.

No problem, he felt.

He was bound for eternal glory and heaven.

Then Thomas began listening to us here on Beyond Today and reading his Bible with new

understanding.

He appreciated all the new truths he was learning and he began to change his life.

Thomas rejoiced in the truth he was gleaning from Scripture.

But there was one truth he could not see.

This truth had everything to do with his salvation.

Until he accepted this truth, Thomas was missing a critical key to his salvation.

He did not understand the profound truth of a proper baptism which is the critical step

in the path of eternal life.

How about you?

Could there be a piece missing on the road to your salvation?

Join us on Beyond Today as we discuss "Baptism: Let's Talk About Your Salvation."

Have you had a religious experience where you committed yourself to God or perhaps you

were baptized?

Now, you think, you are guaranteed eternal salvation.

Right?

Do you think that right now your life is "good enough" before God?

You may want to consider that the very Word of God has very explicit instructions for

followers of Jesus Christ.

Let me show you something from the Bible.

There was a man who thought that he knew God.

He obeyed God in his personal life and he worked hard to promote his faith and his religion.

He went so far as to persecute those of his own nation who were just as faithful and zealous

yet different from him.

This man's name was Saul.

You know him as the Pharisee who became the apostle Paul.

Saul came face to face with the risen Jesus Christ as he was traveling to the city of

Damascus to arrest disciples of the Church of God.

The story is told in the book of Acts.

"Saul was breathing threats and murder against the disciples of the Lord, went to the high

priest and asked letters from him to the synagogues of Damascus, so that if he found any who were

of the Way, whether men or women, he might bring them bound to Jerusalem.

As he journeyed he came near Damascus, and suddenly a light shone around him from heaven.

Then he fell to the ground, and he heard a voice saying to him, 'Saul, Saul, why are

you persecuting Me?'"

(Acts 9:1-4)

Now consider this.

Saul was a very good Pharisee and he was doing what he thought was God's will.

But, in a very dramatic way he found out he was working against the will of God.

Christ confronted him directly.

And Saul said, "Who are You, Lord?"

Then the Lord said, 'I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting.

It is useless for you to fight against my will'" (NLT).

(Act 9:5; Acts 26:14)

Saul was guilty of resisting the will of God, fighting against the living Christ.

His only response at this moment was to ask, "Lord, what do you want me to do?"

(Acts 9:6)

It was the right question.

It's the question that we should all ask God in our personal prayers to Him.

Lord, what do you want me to do?

Christ directed Saul to go into the city where he would discover what he was to do next.

The story in Acts shows us Saul then encountered another disciple named Ananias who had been

told to go and to baptize him.

Ananias came to Saul and laid hands on him and he baptized him as Christ had told him

to do.

God restored Saul's sight and he began a new life before God.

Had Paul resisted the command from Christ he would have remained in ignorance about

the real purpose God wanted for his life.

Paul was called to be a greater instrument in the hand of God.

Can you see where you too may be called to a greater purpose?

Perhaps, like Paul, you have been going down a path that seemed good and right.

Yet, there's more to the story for you.

What could be keeping you from realizing this?

This story is from the Book of Acts.

In your Bible Acts is an important book telling us how salvation is made possible through

the life, death, and the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

The path to salvation can be called the road to eternal life.

This path begins when you come face to face with Jesus Christ just as Paul did on the

road to Damascus.

A prominent theme in Acts is repentance and baptism.

Those who came into contact with the gospel of Jesus Christ and the kingdom of God ultimately

repented and were baptized.

As they heard the message of hope of salvation through Jesus they responded to that message.

It gave meaning and a new direction in their lives, just as it did for the apostle Paul.

Again from the book of Acts on the historic day of Pentecost when the Church was founded,

Peter's first sermon convicted members of his audience of their sins.

Notice what Peter said.

"Men of Israel, hear these words: Jesus of Nazareth, a Man attested by God to you

by miracles, wonders, and signs which God did through Him in your midst, as you yourselves

know.

Him, being delivered by the determined purpose and foreknowledge of God, you have taken by

lawless hands, have crucified and put to death" (Acts 2:22-23).

This is a powerfully convicting message from the apostle Peter.

It speaks to the personal responsibility that we have in looking at our life and comparing

it to the very life of the Son of God.

Peter said, "you have taken by lawless hands, have crucified and put to death."

Those were powerful words to the first century audience.

You can imagine that several hearing Peter's words were in the crowd and called for the

release of a thief named Barabbas and left Jesus in bonds to be led to His death by crucifixion.

These men and women were being confronted with their part in the death of a man who

had done nothing to deserve such treatment.

They were confronted with the reality that they had killed the Son of God who came in

the flesh to show the way to salvation.

These words still carry a powerful force and meaning today.

They should speak to you.

They should convict us of the need to accept in faith the sacrifice of Christ for all sin.

The crowd listening to Peter immediately sought a way out of their dilemma.

God mercifully provided an answer.

Notice what is said.

"Then Peter said to them, 'Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name

of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy

Spirit'" (Acts 2:38).

Peter added, "For the promise is to you and your children and as many as are afar

off and as many as the Lord shall call."

He then encouraged them to "be saved from this perverse generation."

They could change their lives and begin to live differently.

And many of them did.

"Then those who gladly received his word were baptized; and that day about three thousand

souls were added to them" (Acts 2:41).

So what does this mean for you?

It means God has given a way to handle life with all its challenges and opportunities.

Peter held out hope to his audience that they now had a path forward through their lives

that would lead to a better life.

Notice he told them to "save yourselves" (Acts 2:40).

They had to make a decision, a decision to accept the opportunity before them.

Perhaps an analogy will help.

These men and women were drowning in a moment of despair brought on by the realization that

they had been involved with the death of not just an innocent man but the one sent by God

in answer to all the promises and the prophecies they knew from scripture.

Like a person drowning in a body of water they were grasping for a lifeline, a means

by which their lives could be put on firm ground and they could feel safe.

Peter threw them the life line.

It required them to grab hold and decide to make a new life in the midst of a world described

as perverse or crooked.

A world that had killed Jesus of Nazareth the Son of God would be a world hostile to

this new life.

But Peter also showed the key to overcoming their past life and how to enter a new life

of the world to come.

The key is found in the Holy Spirit of God.

Jesus had once described to His followers exactly how this new life would work.

He showed that He was the key.

Using the illustration of a shepherd and sheep he wove a description of how He would help

all who made the decision to follow his lead as the chief shepherd to achieve a new level

of life.

Notice what Jesus said.

"Most assuredly, I say to you, I am the door of the sheep.

All who ever came before Me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not hear them.

I am the door."

Let's pause here.

A door opens.

A door gives entrance into a place.

Christ is saying He was the entrance into a condition, a relationship unlike any other.

Others would try to create that relationship but unless Christ was involved it would be

false.

Jesus said to His followers to listen, to hear Him.

Now let's continue.

"If anyone enters by Me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture."

Let's pause there again.

Jesus was explaining salvation.

"Enter by me," Jesus said, "and you will be saved."

Remember what Peter said?

"Save yourselves from this perverse generation" (Acts 2:40).

We have described a portal into a new life, requiring a decision, a right decision of

the heart and mind based on truth.

Jesus was offering to give His disciples good pasture, good spiritual teaching that would

lead them along the road of salvation.

Now let's see how Christ concludes that passage.

He went on to say "the thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy.

I have come that they may have life and that they may have it more abundantly" (John

10:7-10).

Christ came to give life, an abundant successful fulfilling life with answers to the big questions

and the big issues of human life.

Christ explained the purpose for human life.

He revealed the mystery of God, explaining just who God was and that He, Jesus, was God's

son sent to clear the path of salvation about eternal life.

Where other teachers and teachings had stolen this understanding Jesus revealed it clearly

by and through His life.

The abundant life Jesus revealed was through and by a relationship with Him.

It would require a desire to change one's life and faith in Christ.

With Peter's sermon we see that the act of baptism is a required step.

Not by the practice of sprinkling, but by a full immersion.

Here's why.

See, baptism is a symbol of the death of what the Bible calls "the old man."

It involves immersion into a "watery grave" showing our desire to put to death our past

life.

Coming up out of the water is like a resurrection to a new life led by the Spirit of God.

The Bible describes those who are led by the Spirit of God they are the sons of God (Romans

8:14).

It is a new life.

A life led by the Spirit of the holy God.

It makes all the difference; it can make a world of difference in your life now.

The abundant life that Christ spoke about begins only when we decide to turn from our

life and seek a new life with the Holy Spirit.

This new life is different than what we now have.

It's a life with God at the center.

It's a new life with the goal of the coming Kingdom of God firmly in our sights.

Such a life it ignites passion, a passion to leave all and seek the righteousness of

that kingdom.

Christ spoke parables that explain the excitement and the passion that is aroused by this new

life.

There's one parable, it's called the parable of the pearl of great price.

In it He described, "the Kingdom of heaven is like a merchant seeking beautiful pearls,

who, when he had found one pearl of great price, went and sold all that he had and bought

it" (Matthew 13:45-46).

The calling of a new life in Christ requires us to sell all that we have of the former

life and go all out and all in for the kingdom of God.

This pearl of great price cannot be found by any less of an effort.

So here is the question.

Do you have what it takes?

Are you willing to pay the price?

Not everyone is and not everyone can.

But this business of eternal life and salvation is not as effortless as your religious teachers

may have led you to believe.

What Christ laid down for His disciples, and for the Church that He is building, requires

a carefully thought out commitment.

It requires us to count the cost.

Jesus illustrated what He meant by using the example of a man planning to build a great

tower.

The large building project required planning and an accurate determination of the cost,

before breaking ground with the first spade of dirt.

Such a project requires having enough money to finish what is started.

Lest," he said, "after he has laid the foundation, and is not able to finish, all

who see it begin to mock him saying 'This man began to build and is not able to finish.'"

Christ's main point was "if you do not forsake all that you have you cannot be My

disciple" (Luke 14:26-33).

These are strong words and they do not fit well into our modern minds accustomed to easy

solutions, short commitments and minimal risk.

To be a disciple, a follower of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, is dangerous, challenging and

rigorous business.

It will require nothing short of a total commitment of your life for your whole life.

This is why Jesus said "narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life,

and there are few who find it."

Do you have what it takes?

Are you willing to make a commitment?

We here on Beyond Today, we share the truths that God reveals and we lay them before you

in each program.

Our free Bible Study aids and Beyond Today magazine contain understanding of the Bible

and of God's plan of salvation for you.

But you have to take a critical first step to begin to the journey.

Let's look at one more example from your Bible.

In Acts we have a story of an encounter between the disciple Philip and a eunuch who was the

treasury minister in the Ethiopian queen's government.

He was reading from the book of Isaiah.

After Philip had thoroughly explained the truth of God to him, this official asked him,

"What hinders me from being baptized?"

(Acts 8:36).

Should you not ask yourself the same question?

What hinders you from being baptized?

In the story, Philip replied, "If you believe with all your heart, you may."

The eunuch responded, "I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God" (Acts 8:37).

But then what happened?

Did Philip recommend delaying the ceremony?

No not at all.

It says this, "And both Philip and the eunuch went down into the water, and he baptized

him" (Acts 8:38).

How did the Ethiopian eunuch react to his baptism?

In the account there in Acts we are told that after Philip left the scene the Ethiopian

"went on his way rejoicing" (Acts 8:39).

It was probably the happiest day of his life.

His past sins were forgiven and behind him forever.

He could look forward to a transformed life, the abundant life that Christ spoke of.

He could look forward to an ever increasing understanding of the Word of God made possible

by God's Holy Spirit.

The day of your baptism is not a day of suffering and sadness.

Have you ever noticed the facial expression of a bride on her wedding day?

A big smile graces the face of blissful happiness and great joy!

Both marriage and baptism are rites of passage into a different way of life.

The former, marriage, is on the human level.

It's for this physical life.

But the latter, baptism, is an important step toward living forever in God's eternal Kingdom.

Let me say that again about baptism.

It's not for those with no understanding of the law of God.

As part of this sacred rite, we enter into a covenant with God in which we promise to

strive to obey His law for the rest of our lives.

This is what is called repentance.

It's turning our lives around to obey God, to keep His Holy law.

But we must first understand what it is God requires of us before we commit to it.

In the examples of Paul and the 3,000 Jews that were baptized when the New Testament

Church began, they were keeping the biblical Feast of Pentecost.

They all had a background of instruction in God's commandments.

So did the Ethiopian eunuch because the Jewish religion, and this might surprise some to

learn, the Jewish religion was commonly practiced in his home country of Ethiopia.

So where are you in your understanding and in your commitment?

Do you know your Bible?

Or does this biblical language sound strange to you?

You may need more time before even considering baptism.

Time that can be well spent by studying the Bible, and to assist you in your study we

provide not only the articles in Beyond Today magazine but many free study guides offered

in every issue.

Eventually you can make an informed decision about your commitment to God.

But if you are unnecessarily delaying baptism based on an idea or feeling that are not supported

in Scripture, then listen to these words of the apostle Paul.

He told Timothy, "Lay hold on eternal life" (1 Timothy 6:12).

Without baptism this becomes impossible.

Baptism is a command of God, it's part of His plan of salvation and a lack of repentance

or faith are the only valid reasons for delaying baptism.

But you have already taken significant steps in that direction.

If you understand and seek His truth, God will grant you even deeper repentance.

So why put off what the Bible calls "the baptism of repentance" (Acts 13:24)?

Why delay your start down the road to eternal salvation?

Indeed, as Paul tells us in the book of Acts, God "now commands all men everywhere to

repent" (Acts 17:30).

If you would like to discuss baptism or any other spiritual matter, we can help you arrange

a private appointment with a United Church of God minister.

In confidence he would be glad to explain repentance, baptism and any other biblical

topic in much more detail.

As you know, my fellow presenters and I are ministers and pastors with the United Church

of God.

Gary and Steve are joining me here for a moment to talk about the need for proper baptism.

And one of the best examples of this is the baptism of Jesus Christ Himself.

So Steve and Gary, welcome.

Let's talk for a moment about baptism as it pertains to Jesus Christ because it is

a question that might come up.

Christ was perfect.

Why was He in need of being baptized when He was baptized by John the Baptist?

[Gary] That's a very important question because Jesus as the Son of God, obviously

did not need to be baptized because baptism is for the washing away of sin, symbolically

washing away sins.

He had no sin to be washed but he said that he needed to do this for righteousness sake.

The whole issue was he was doing it as an example.

You know, as Christians we should be the disciples of Jesus Christ, following Him as the master.

So we follow His commands.

How much more should we be following His example, an example that He deliberately sets for us?

So what He did there is very important in understanding what it is to be a Christian.

[Steve] I think it also speaks to the fact that it was a witness to John the Baptist

as well.

John said well wait a second I'm the one that needs to be baptized not you and he recognized

that he was preparing the way for the Christ, for the Messiah.

And there was this voice from heaven that said "This is My Son in whom I am well pleased."

So it became very obvious this is the right guy, this is the Messiah, this is the example

that we follow.

So like you said, we follow that example.

Christ set it and so we follow Him.

[Darris] You know, Christ set the example, He was immersed in water.

It's very clear from the teaching there.

And every other example of any Christian from that point forward in the New Testament, you

see that they're baptized.

I find that to be an amazing fact.

[Gary] That's very amazing because how did the first century Christians define being

a Christian?

Now when you look after the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, the pouring out of God's

Spirit on Pentecost, the beginning of the Church, from that point on every time they

came into contact with someone who wanted to be a Christian, they told them they HAD

to be baptized.

So that example is overwhelming that baptism is a requirement to be a Christian.

[Steve] Right at the beginning of the New Testament church, Acts chapter 2, they said

"What should we do?" and Peter was very clear.

Repent, be baptized.

We must repent.

We must be baptized.

We must have hands laid on us to receive God's Spirit.

[Gary] It's sort of sad that that is almost disappearing from whole segments of Christianity

as a requirement.

If we are Christians, then we are going to look at what Christ taught, His example, and

the example of His followers.

All His followers were baptized.

And all of them said you should be baptized.

All the Apostles claimed you should be baptized.

So if we're going to truly be Christians we have to be followers of Christ.

That's what Christian means.

We need to go back to that example and live by that example.

[Darris] Well it's an important topic and it's important for our audience to get a

grasp of what the Bible says and apply it in their own life.

We should remember what Ananias told the Apostle Paul nearly 2,000 years ago: "Why are you

waiting?

Arise and be baptized."

I certainly hope the information that we presented today about salvation has given you much to

think about.

Perhaps you've seen that the genuine truth of the Bible contrasts significantly with

[cheers and applause]

So this is a story about how I tried to kill my dad.

Trust me, it's hilarious. Trust me.

So you guys have heard the term "Blood is thicker than water,"

right?

I hate it. My dad must have said it to me

a thousand times growing up.

"Blood is thicker than water, son."

"Blood is thicker than water, son."

And I just started to hate it because I think it's what

family members say to you when they do something shitty,

and then instead of apologizing,

they're just like, "Hey, we have the same blood type,

so you have to put up with this shit."

So I would hear it all the time.

My dad would miss, like, basketball games and graduation

and he'd always say, "Blood is thicker than water, son."

And he ended up missing most of my childhood,

'cause when I was 5 years old, he went away to college.

Well, that's what my mom called it.

You guys could of course call it maximum security prison.

And every couple years on spring break,

he would get out and he would come visit my little brother

and I, and luckily my mom remarried and we had a great

stepdad who taught us how to ride a bike and build a fire,

stuff that you're supposed to learn from your dad,

because when my dad would come to town,

he would teach me the stuff he knew about.

So for instance, my dad taught me three things in life

I'll never forget.

Number one, you never snitch, no matter what.

Number two, if you have extra food at lunchtime,

you only give it to white people.

Weird to tell a fourth grader. I agree.

And the craziest one of all, my dad got out on spring break

one year and he came back home to visit us,

and he took me and my little brother swimming.

We had a great day at the pool, jumping off the diving board,

playing Marco Polo,

and I got out of the pool, I'm in the locker room,

and I'm taking a shower, and my father comes in

and he sees me showering.

He's like, "Hold on, son. Get out of the shower for a sec."

I was like, "Why? What's up, Dad?

He goes, "Son, every time you take a shower from now on,

before you get in the shower,

put the water on as cold as it can go

and then get in that cold water and shadowbox

until you count to 15."

I was like, "Dad, why would I do that?"

And he's like, "Son, the way your body reacts

when that cold water hits it

is the same way you'll react if you ever get stabbed,

so if you ever get stabbed,

you'll be able to fight for 15 seconds."

That's what my dad--that's what my dad

tells a fucking 12 year old.

And like an idiot, I do that shit till I'm, like, 19,

and I get a girlfriend and she's like,

"Why are we fake fighting in this cold shower?"

Like, you better be ready, bitch.

You could go down at any time.

The shit is real.

So that's my dad.

So my dad only did one good thing for me life,

of course I had wonderful stepdad,

and before I was about to start junior high,

he sent me and my little brother down and he said

he wanted to adopt us

and have us take his last name like we were his sons.

And of course my macho dad threw a fit

and he started calling the house collect every day,

threatening to kill my stepfather,

which I think is hilarious that my poor stepfather

had to pay for his own death threats.

But he would call and he would remind us

"Blood is thicker than water; you're my son."

And he eventually sent some goons over to the house

to, like, scare my stepdad, and my mom made a decision,

like, "Forget it, let's just keep your last name."

Which is the only good thing that my father ever did for me,

because if my stepdad would've adopted me,

I would've started junior high school

as Brandt Hufendick,

which I think has got to be the shittiest last name

in the world.

My poor little sister's named Hayley Hufendick.

I don't know why she didn't get married at midnight

on her 18th birthday, but she didn't do it.

So that was my dad.

And then after that he disappeared for, like, 8 years

and I never heard from him.

And I went to real college in Phoenix.

And then-- well, junior college,

so kind of real, but I went.

But then one day I got a letter out of nowhere,

and it was from my dad, and he just said,

"I'll be at the Phoenix airport in three days,

and I'd love to see you,

and there's no time to write back.

Just--I'll be looking for you."

I didn't know what to do, 'cause I was doing so good

in life and I hadn't seen him in almost a decade.

But then part of me is like, I got to go see my dad.

So I went to the airport,

which was one of the weirdest moments in my life,

because this is before 9/11, so you could go from gate to gate.

And when I got to the airport, I realized

I didn't even know what my own dad looked like.

So I'm in looking at the bars and bookstores.

I'm like, "Is that my dad? Is that my dad?"

And then of course I saw a guy with a ponytail,

wife beater, brown khaki pants.

I'm like, there's my dad.

So I run over, I give him a hug,

and we both fight back tears.

And he tells me how much he missed me

and how blood is thicker than water.

And he's determined to be part of my life again,

and he said, "I'm moving to Vegas.

I had this incredible cocktail waitress girlfriend,

and you're allowed--you know you can come see us

whenever you want."

And I was like, "Okay, Dad, thanks.

I gotta go back to college."

And I drove back to my dorm, and when I got to my dorm,

I called my two best friends back in Wyoming

who also had shitty dads growing up,

and I told him this story and they're like,

"We should go see your dad on our spring break."

And I was like, "All right, cool."

So they drove down from Wyoming.

They pick me up in Phoenix, and we went to Vegas

on our spring break and spent five days with my dad,

which was incredible, 'cause we were just dumb kids

from Wyoming.

He taught us about, like, hookers and craps,

seafood buffets.

We're like, holy shit, this is incredible.

So at the end of five days, he's like,

"You guys are welcome to come back whenever you want.

You can live with me and my girlfriend in this trailer."

And then we were like, "Sorry, dad, we gotta go back

to college."

And they started driving me towards Phoenix,

and every mile we got away from Vegas,

we were just itching to get back.

And by the time we got to Phoenix,

the three of us idiots made the decision

that we were going to drop out of college

and move back to Vegas to get our dream jobs

as pirates at the Treasure Island.

We thought, what would be better than wearing an eyepatch

and jumping off a big ship every hour

while drunk tourist chicks scream at us?

We're like, "That's it. That's the dream job."

So we dropped out of college.

Our families were furious with us,

and we moved to Vegas,

and of course we don't get pirate jobs.

I don't--we didn't know anything about casting

or any of that shit.

So my friends sober up and they go back home to Wyoming

and reenroll in college, but I was enjoying

hanging out with my dad, and I didn't want to leave,

so I decided to stay.

And then one day I actually got the dream job.

I would go play basketball every afternoon

with a bunch of professional gamblers,

and one of 'em hired me to be a runner.

So my job was just to carry hundreds of thousands

of dollars' worth of cash up and down the Strip

and bet on sports.

So it was great. I was making a ton of money.

Everything was good, so I told my dad we're moving out

of this trailer and I rented this beautiful house

on a golf course.

And I started calling my little brother who lived in Portland

at the time, just a little stoner dude that ran a Subway.

And I told him you got to come to Vegas.

It's me, you and dad; we can finally be a perfect

little family again, and he's like, "All right."

And he moved to Vegas, and we had a great time

the first six months.

We'd sit on the back porch every night,

just get drunk, tell stories.

He'd tell us about prison riots and shit

and we'd tell him about scoring 8 points

in a JV basketball game,

or whatever shitty stories we had.

He obviously had much better stories.

But he was always just waiting to get off parole.

He's like, "I can't wait to get off parole.

I can be my own man again."

And he'd talk about it every day,

and we counted down the days

till he finally got off parole.

And I remember I threw a big party at the house,

invited all our family and friends over,

and we just got wasted.

And I remember about 4:00 in the morning,

it's just me and my dad and brother in the kitchen,

and we're just telling him how proud we are

and we're just drunk and it's this incredible moment,

and then--but that is the last good moment

I'll ever have with my dad,

because the next morning he woke up, got back on drugs,

started bringing around, like, little 20-year-old meth heads

to my house, even though they're younger than me.

My dad's, like, 48 at the time.

And he starts just acting like a drug addict,

you know, stealing my friends' wallets,

forgetting my birthday, just being a shitty dad,

and I knew it was going bad,

but I didn't know how to get out of it.

And you know, it's hard to yell at your own dad,

and I knew it was going to happen.

And then on a Saturday during football season

I'd have to bet college football all day,

so I'd get to the Strip at 8:00 in the morning.

I'd run up and down and bet till, like, 9:00 at night.

Then I'd go home, go to bed,

and then do the same thing for NFL on Sundays.

So on the Saturday I worked my ass off,

I come home, I'm exhausted.

When I get home, my dad's there all cracked out,

and I tell him, "Hey Dad, I'm going to bed.

You can come down tomorrow and get everything comped

if you want to watch football."

He's like, "Okay, son."

And I went to sleep about 10:00.

Around midnight, my little brother busts in

and he's like, "Hey, Brandt, Brandt,

someone stole my money."

My little brother had saved up $350 to fly to Portland

to watch his girlfriend graduate college.

So I jump out of bed, like the big brother,

and I run downstairs to try to find my dad

and tell--to find whatever little shitty kid

took my brother's money.

So when I get downstairs, I don't see him,

I'm telling for him, and I go look in the garage,

'cause my white trash dad has this stupid convertible

Camaro that he thought was, like, the dopest car

in the world, and it always had to be parked in the garage.

So when I got in the garage and I looked

and his Camaro was gone, it hit me:

Oh, shit, I got all my money upstairs.

And I ran upstairs and my dad had stole

$80,000 cash from me.

And now, I worked for guys that you don't want to be

$80,000 short for, not that there's any job

you could $80,000 short for.

But I'll never forget that, and I see my little brother crying,

and I'm like, you stole 80,000;

why would you go steal your own son's $350, you know?

And it just drove me crazy, and to watch my little brother cry,

you know, I brought him from Portland, he was doing good,

and I brought him into this shit.

So in that moment, I made the decision, I'm like,

that's it; I'm gonna fucking kill my dad.

I'm gonna fucking kill my dad.

So the next morning I wake up and I call my cousin Kato

who lives in Phoenix, and he's like...

[laughter] He's like a real gangster

and the most loyal dude in my life, and I tell him

what happens.

He says, "I'll be there in five hours."

And he drives straight from Phoenix to Vegas,

and when he gets there, doorbell rings,

I open the door, and there he is.

He's like, "Where's he at? Where's he at?"

I was like, "Hold on. I got a plan."

Now, in my defense, I was 23 years old.

I'd never killed anybody before.

This is before "Dexter," "Breaking Bad."

This is obviously a fucking stupid plan,

but this was my plan.

My mom had told me a story that when I was young,

my dad had cheated on my mom and got chlamydia

and he had to go to the doctor,

and the doctor prescribed him penicillin,

not knowing that he was deathly allergic to penicillin.

So he took that penicillin and he almost died.

So in my head, I was like, "That's it."

You know, almost every morning

my dad would go to the Jamba Juice,

like, three blocks from my house, get a Jamba Juice.

I mean, that was, like, his favorite thing,

so I figured, fuck it, if I just get some penicillin,

put it in a Jamba Juice,

give it to my dad, he'll drink it,

he'll be dead, perfect. Airtight plan.

So I tell my cousin, he's like, "All right,

I mean, I can get penicillin."

So I was like...

He's like, he can get anything, trust me.

So he's like, all right.

I go, one more part of this plan, everyone will think,

like, I'm the number one suspect,

so I'm gonna go to Colorado

and you guys just take care of this shit.

They're like, all right, you're kind of a pussy,

but we'll do it.

And I was like, all right, good.

I don't want to go to college like my dad.

So...

I fly to Colorado, you know.

Me and girlfriend go to Estes Park.

We go to a hotel, and I call my cousin Kato.

I'm like, "Yo, are you ready?"

He's like, "We're ready.

Extra-large mango in the fridge

just waiting for your dad to come home."

I was like, all right, cool, call me when he's dead.

He's like, all right.

So I wait about a hour, two hours, no phone call.

I call him back, I'm like, "Yo, what happened?"

They're like, "Well, your dad came home,

but he wouldn't take it."

I was like, "What do you mean he wouldn't take it?"

Like, we gave him the Jamba Juice,

but he just put it back on the kitchen counter.

I was like--and looking back, I get it.

You know, my dad was in Leavenworth and real prison,

so he knows you don't take, like, a gift

from your enemy, you know?

I don't think he thought we were trying to kill him,

but he probably thought we pissed in it

or something stupid, right?

So I said, you know what, forget it.

This plan's stupid. Just go with the original plan.

Pack up my brother's stuff, go to Phoenix,

I'll fly home, we'll just never talk to my dad again.

My cousin's like "No, fuck that.

We do it my way now."

I'm like, "What's your way?" He's like, "We do it my way.

We'll call you in an hour," and he hung up the phone.

And I just sat there in the hotel like,

what are they gonna do?

And this is the plan they came up with.

So they knew my dad loved that stupid Camaro

and it always had to be parked in the garage.

So what they did was, they opened the garage door

and then they went out and they cut the phone lines

and the power lines and the just waited

for my dad to come home

in this dark corner in the garage.

Sure enough, my dad came home just like they thought,

parked in the garage, hit the button to get the garage

to shut, it wouldn't shut.

They said he was so frustrated, he didn't know what was

going on and he got out of the car, went over,

got the garage door, manually shut it, and locked it.

And as soon as he locked it

and started to walk back through the garage

into the house, my brother and cousin

jumped out with golf clubs

and tried to kill him in the garage with golf clubs.

But they were fucking idiots, because there was no light.

So they're swinging their hearts out,

almost killing each other.

It's like we needed a better murder caddy.

They fucked it all up.

But there was--the only light coming into the garage

was there was a side door that led to the backyard,

and at the bottom of that side door

there was a little doggy door,

and there was a little light coming through,

and my dad saw that light and he just put his shoulder down

and ran and busts through that door

and fell into the backyard, jumped over the back wall

onto the golf course and ran away.

And that was, like, 17 years ago

and I never saw him or spoke to him since that day.

So my brother and cousin go to Phoenix.

Three days later, I fly back from Colorado,

and I'll never forget I was standing in the garage

with this garden hose

trying to clean up the mess they made,

and that's when it hit me.

I was like, my dad was right this whole time.

His blood is way thicker than water.
