Hi there, Vladimir here with another video about how to learn English

When it comes to learning a foreign language, I strongly believe that

Monolingual learner's dictionaries are our most important study tool.

I highly doubt you can master a foreign language as an adult

without monolingual learner's dictionaries

and even if you could, it would take double the time, triple the time.

Luckily for English language learners

English has the best monolingual learners dictionaries in the world

all free, on the internet

In this video I will walk you through some of the main features of

Oxford Learner's Dictionary

We need to start by saying that there are 2 Oxford dictionaries available on the internet

Oxford Living Dictionaries, which is/are more advanced

Oxford Leaner's Dictionaries, which is the focus of this video

Oxford learner's dictionaries dot com a great, great dictionary

Here are some of its main features

Say you are reading an article and you come across a new word

the word Success

Let us type it in: Success

What we see first is this KEY symbol here

And we see this The Oxford 3000

Find out more about the Oxford 3000

And it says

The Oxford 3000 is a list of the 3000 most important words to learn in English

The words of the Oxford 3000 are shown in the dictionary with a key symbol

How are the keywords selected?

The words which occur most frequently in English are included

I talk a lot about word frequency in my book Virtually Native.

There is no such thing as Difficult or Easy words

In my book I talk about Rare vs Frequent

Going back to our original word: Success

Next, Oxford gives us the pronunciation

First the phonetic alphabet and also

an audio recording of both British and North American pronunciation

super cool feature

You don't need a teacher to learn how to pronounce a certain word

Next is the meaning

Success: the fact that you have achieved something that you want and have been trying to do or get

Not the easiest of definitions I admit

At this point, if you still don't understand the meaning of the new word

my advice would be to reference another monolingual dictionary,

Cambridge in particular

And if you still don't understand then you can resort to a bilingual dictionary

Oxford provides 1 bilingual dictionary English German

Unfortunately it is a paid option

But don't you worry

Cambridge has a choice of over 17 bilingual dictionaries

having read and understood the bilingual definition my advice is to go back

and read the monolingual definition once again

Next are the example sentences, an extremely important feature

What's the secret of your success?

here in the example sentences is all the grammar you need

All highlighted in bold

success (in doing something)

Have success is what we call Collocation

Collocation is a combination of words in a language

Never study individual words, always in combination with other words

Here is Oxford Collocations Dictionary

All the collocations you need

I talk a lot about collocations in my book Virtually Native

Some collocations with Success

With adjective: Great success

With verb: Achieve success

With noun: Success story

Preposition: With Success, Success in

Here is your grammar

Never ever learn individual words, always in combination with other words

Collocations

It is how you learn grammar

The thing is you need to pay to see the full entry

but that is more than enough for beginner and intermediate learners of English

Nice touch here is that Oxford gives you the opposite word: Failure

It shouldn't be so down bellow, it should be next to the definition

better than nothing right

Next is the word origin, something I never cared about

And some extra example sentences

And finally we have some idioms with success

Oxford learner's dictionaries

A great dictionary, simple and straightforward

and believe it or not, this is just half of it.

There is so much more about how to use monolingual dictionaries

how to cross reference them,

how to study grammar and collocations

how to study example sentences

I talk a lot about monolingual learner's dictionaries in my book Virtually Native

I give you step-by-step instructions on how to use them

My book is available on Amazon and virtuallynative.com

Lego Minecraft: The Melon Farm (21138) - Duration: 1:52.

Hey everyone!

JAYSTEPHER with The Melon Farm

by Lego Minecraft.

Set number 21138.

Contains 69 pieces.

Recommended building ages are 6 through 14.

Here we have a small adorable set.

On the right, we have Steve

saddled up on a pig with a carrot on a stick.

On the left, we have a random villager

and a Creeper.

In the middle, we have a sign.

The graphics on the sign are printed.

Nice melons.

The graphics are printed as well.

Here we have a chest

with a few slices of melon.

Not a whole lot with this set.

Not a lot of bricks and plates.

This is mainly an accessory set.

We do have a piece of grass.

If we press this down,

it can simulate the Creeper blowing up the melons.

So let's give this a shot.

That's all that it does.

Nothing worse when you just got done building a farm,

and a Creeper comes by and blows it up.

There goes your food source.

It's not a bad set.

It will be great for any Lego Minecraft collector

or as a source for spare parts.

Thank you for watching!

Acer Swift 3 laptop hands-on - Duration: 2:10.

hey we're here at the Acer event in New York and I'm showing you the Acer Swift

three which is a new consumer laptop that looks pretty fancy so first of all

this is an all-metal chassis and you actually get a choice of colors I'm

holding the gold color right here but there's also kind of a rosy metal color

and a blue metal color so you can express a little individuality with your

computer purchase and not have it all be black or gray the other thing is that

with the middle you get these nice chiseled details that's another thing

again that's very distinctive from your typical plastic laptop but this is the

important part look at this display this is a 15.6 inch IPS display you have

these really narrow bezels which helps keep the laptop lighter feeling but also

just it's all about the screen real estate and you have two different

options with the display you have a typical 1080p resolution which is fine

or you can get a 3840 by 2160 resolution display for even finer resolution I mean

that's going to be gorgeous it is going to eat a little bit more battery life so

just keep that in mind other things there are choices galore

with this you have choices of core i3 through Core i7

Intel processors you have a choice of 16 gigabytes of RAM a couple of different

speeds you have all these storage options and we're gonna turn it on the

side so you can also see your port options you see on this side we've got

USB see USB a and an SD card reader now I'm going to flip it to the other side

and we've got another USB see couple more USB a's and full hdmi now

that's something that's really good to have on a slender laptop like this

sometimes you lose that when you go slender this is a little less than an

inch thick and you're getting what I would consider a really great collection

of connectivity here so we don't have a price or availability on this laptop yet

but what we do have is something that you would be perfectly willing to show

off at the coffee shop
