Hello friends, my name is Arith Härger and today I'm going to talk about the rune Nauthiz
The previous rune is Hagalaz, and as I've said, the first rune of a row of 3 very menacing runes
Hagalaz, Nauthiz and Isa
They are not just the representation of the Norns, the representation of fate
but they also form a sequence of negative events in our lives
terrible times, hard times, which are necessary for our personal development
because there would be little joy in the world if we knew nothing but happiness
Sadness is what helps us to give a proper value to each joyful moment
Well, as I've said today I'm going to talk about Nauthiz
which sounds a lot like "not this" in English
and I suppose that is probably what people say when this rune appears in a rune reading
"Oh gods not this!"
it was a poor joke
Anyway, nauthiz literally means need, necessity
It's the rune connected to constraint, conflict, dramatic events, distress
life lessons and when we are forced to grow
and that growth is beyond anything we had plan for ourselves
A short term pain for a long term gain
Because it's a rune of necessity, it often represents that which is opposite to the heart
what you need isn't always what you get
This is a rune that warns you that hard times are coming
or came or you are in them right now, depending on the position on a rune reading
But it represents what must be done, life lessons, for your personal development
and when I say the position on a rune-reading, I mean. . .
that if this rune is in the present or future position you either know about your present situation
and therefore how to act
or you can prepare yourself for hard times by acting in advance
But if nauthiz appears in the past position of a rune-reading,
it's showing you that your current negative position is due to poor life choices of the past,
which led you to misfortunes in the present
But more of that further ahead
As I've said, this rune stays right between Hagallaz and Isa
between suffering and the inability to act
Which means the past brought your pain and suffering,
but right now you have to act, forcibly take actions and not let yourself go down
or in the future you will be too deep in sorrow and unable to act
Nauthiz is a very useful warning to take action before it's too late
Nauthiz represents a life out of control, very negative
but remember . . .
negativity in your life can be an illusion
We often generate negative experiences, not always, but often because of the external negative experiences
these external events create disappointments in your life
such disappointments can even be inherited from parents, other family members, friends and even the society itself
things that are not directly connected or towards you
but through the negative experiences of others you also absorb negativity, trauma
This creates fear and psychological limitations which will condition us to wrongly act in the face of negative illusions
familiar frustrations and disappointments
and therefore attract crises after crises
The limitations, fear, negative experiences you saw in others, create limitations on your ability to act towards familiar fears,
and even without having experienced such negative events by yourself,
you automatically avoid them because you know how it affected others and naturally you don't want to experience the same pain
But take that in mind,
negativity can be an illusion created by external negative events
and if that's the case, you can easily solve problems in your life
Because of this aspect Nauthiz also represents resistance, the ability to survive
be rational and conduct your efforts, your pain your necessities into positive action
before it's too late
Getting yourself free from problems applying the will to live, to resist
Now let's talk about mythological accounts somewhat connected to this rune
Unlike other runes, nauthiz represents something more abstract
it's not an animal, object, god or goddess or even a familiar feeling that can easily be explained
Necessity, need, everyone everywhere experiences it
It's not easily explained, because sometimes we just have the feeling of necessity but we don't actually know what we need to fill the void in us
But to our Norse ancestors need was marked as the worst fate one can obtain in life
it was something related to constraint, a deep grief so oppressive that you are enable to live
not related to death but to the fact of being alive but completely aloof
it's containing a person to a life of hardship and constant need
hunger for something unattainable, because you don't known exactly what you need
So this rune reflects the difficult situation someone lives in
with few options, under incomprehensible restrictions
it freezes the heart and puts it in chains
For instance, we have the case of the sacrifices of Odin
Being tied to the world tree Yggdrasil for self-sacrifice
Starving, wounded, self-mutilation with a spear, torturing himself
it's an oppressive self-binding situation
but in the end after all the struggle, grief, pain, it has a positive outcome in Odin's spiritual existence
The binding of the wolf Fenrir
by the magic and skill of the dwarves, a chain called Gleipnir is created to bind Fenrir
But while Odin was bound voluntarily, Fenrir was bound by the treachery of the gods
and by believing the gods themselves would keep their word of honour
he was naïve and got himself chained by the external events
by trusting too much on himself and his strength but also wrongly trusting in the gods
and we have Loki, of course
bound in torture, punished by his actions
He's not bound voluntarily nor by external events
but because of his own nature, who he is
Sometimes our nature can be the great cause of our own destruction and misfortune
Sometimes we are our worst enemy
and our incapability to control ourselves leads us to a life of grief
and an eternal necessity for something which we don't understand what it is
because also denying who we are, is denying our very existence and purpose
an horrible paradox
because being who you are might destroy you and others,
and denying yourself, withholding your nature, is also destroying yourself
Without resistance, physically, everything loses its form
And I think this also represents negative resistance
the desire, necessity for evolution of consciousness
but the unconscious resistance to it is always there
The inner struggle always in favour and against our own beliefs
Now let's take a look at the meaning of this rune when it appears in a rune-reading
Very well, in a rune-reading this rune is likely to appear when you are in doubt and insecurity
which warns you that indeed you should think carefully before acting
Having a realistic view of the world is necessary
a realistic view of your problems and how they affect your life
There are obstacles in your life, either created by yourself or those you find in the world around you
there is a strong constraint feeling and pain
but at the same time you are learning for your own benefit
it's the necessity of learning, the necessity of growth
but necessity also requires some action from your part
and now is the time to take action
no matter how painful things are, the lack of confidence and anxiety,
but you have to take action before necessity itself consumes you into a point of not knowing what to do
Strength of character and the determination of controlling negative emotions is exactly what will take you out of this painful situation
Nauthiz helps to identify your hidden repressed side
remembering past actions which led you to this moment
moments where growth stagnated, resulting in weakness
but recognize your own limitations and act accordingly
because pushing yourself too hard will solve little during this time
Irritation with your own limitations prevents you from thinking straight
These are hard times, as I've said, short term pain for long term gain
In the future you will look back at your problems, denials and setbacks of your life as teachers, allies, guides
Some people see an inverted meaning in this rune
To be honest, in my own point of view this rune has no inverted position
unless of course the oblique line of nauthiz is in the uppermost part of the vertical line
and when you invert this rune, the oblique line is down
But the oblique line originally was right in the middle which completely rejects an inverted meaning
because it's one of the runes whose positive and negative interpretations are closely intertwined
Every action has an equal and opposite reaction
Even so, if you are of the opinion that this rune indeed has an inverted meaning
the only things that will show you is that frustration and stress are more evident
you will find difficult to anticipate forthcoming events
You may lack a clear sense of action and as such you may be easily led into unwise decisions
Only in moments of great darkness do we become aware of our inner light,
by which we come to the recognition of our creative powers
Whatever your choices, remember that suffering in its original sense means merely a reflection of experiences
Control your anger, restrain yourself, you will need to do that
Alright my dear friends, I hope you have enjoyed this video
and on the next one I will talk about Isa
and close this row of 3 very menacing runes
thank you so much for watching, see you on the next video, and . . . of course,
tack för idag! (Thank you for today!)
